Revisiting the space weather environment of Proxima Centauri b by Cecilia Garraffo et al. on Wednesday 30 November Close-in planets orbiting around low-mass stars are exposed to intense energetic photon and particle radiation and harsh space weather. We have modeled such conditions for Proxima Centauri b (Garraffo et al. 2016b), a rocky planet orbiting in the habitable-zone of our closest neighboring star, finding a stellar wind pressure three orders of magnitude higher than the solar wind pressure on Earth. At that time, no Zeeman-Doppler observations of the surface magnetic field distribution of Proxima Cen were available and a proxy from a star with similar Rossby number to Proxima was used to drive the MHD model. Recently, the first ZDI observation of Proxima Cen became available (Klein et al. 2021). We have modeled Proxima b's space weather using this map and compared it with the results from the proxy magnetogram. We also computed models for a high-resolution synthetic magnetogram for Proxima b generated by a state-of-the-art dynamo model. The resulting space weather conditions for these three scenarios are similar with only small differences found between the models based on the ZDI observed magnetogram and the proxy. We conclude that our proxy magnetogram prescription based on Rossby number is valid, and provides a simple way to estimate stellar magnetic flux distributions when no direct observations are available. Comparison with models based on the synthetic magnetogram show that the exact magnetogram details are not important for predicting global space weather conditions of planets, reinforcing earlier conclusions that the large-scale (low-order) field dominates, and that the small-scale field does not have much influence on the ambient stellar wind. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.15697v1

Many highly-praised books are written every year. And yet, this week's guest quotes one that we've never had come up in an Art of Procurement podcast before: The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. China has been suffering under a severe heat wave and drought, with daily temperatures in many regions above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The heat has shut down factories on top of the Covid-related shutdowns that are part of China's zero-tolerance Covid  policy. How will this latest blow  affect  production out of China and what are the short and long-term implications to our supply chains?The latest employment figures are out and show more jobs have been created, but other reports add that the United States is lacking skilled workers. If we made contact with aliens, how would religions react?The discovery of life on another planet might seem incompatible with faith in a deity. Yet many theologians are already open to the existence of extraterrestrials, argues the writer Brandon Ambrosino.IIn 2014, Nasa awarded $1.1M to the Center for Theological Inquiry, an ecumenical research institute in New Jersey, to study “the societal implications of astrobiology”.Some were enraged. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which promotes the division between Church and state, asked Nasa to revoke the grant, and threatened to sue if Nasa didn't comply. While the FFR stated that their concern was the commingling of government and religious organisations, they also made it clear that they thought the grant was a waste of money. “Science should not concern itself with how its progress will impact faith-based beliefs.”The FFR's argument might well be undermined, however, when the day comes that humanity has to respond to the discovery of aliens. Such a discovery would raise a series of questions that would exceed the bounds of science. For example, when we ask, “What is life?” are we asking a scientific question or a theological one? Questions about life's origins and its future are complicated, and must be explored holistically, across disciplines. And that includes the way we respond to the discovery of aliens.This is not just an idle fantasy: many scientists would now argue that the detection of extraterrestrial life is more a question of when, not if.There are several reasons for this confidence, but a main one has to do with the speed at which scientists have been discovering planets outside of our own Solar System. In 2000, astronomers knew of about 50 of these ‘exoplanets'. By 2013, they had found almost 850, located in over 800 planetary systems. That number may reach one million by the year 2045, says David Weintraub, associate professor of Astronomy at Vanderbilt University, and author of Religions and Extraterrestrial Life. “We can quite reasonably expect that the number of known exoplanets will soon become, like the stars, almost uncountable,” he writes. Of those discovered so far, more than 20 are Earth-size exoplanets that occupy a “habitable” zone around their star, including the most recently discovered Proxima b, which orbits Proxima Centauri.The upshot is that the more we're able to peer into space, the more certain we become that our planet isn't the only one suitable for life.

Occularis proxima is a fourth level divination spell with an instant casting time, a range of thirty feet, and a duration of about an hour.  The spell requires a small patch of bat fur which is not consumed during the spell.  The spell does require concentration to maintain.  Occularis proxima creates an invisible eye, about one inch in diameter, that hovers and can be moved within thirty feet of the caster.  The eye has normal vision and cannot pass through other objects.  This spell is most prevalently used among the visually impaired but it has also found itself in the tool box of engineers whose job is visual inspection. While occularis proxima does grant the blind a way to see, it does not grant them all the rights of the sighted.  The transportation safety board does grant the blind drivers' licenses because the concentration needed to maintain the spell, by definition, causes distracted driving.

Soon after the closest star to the Sun was discovered, in 1915, astronomers began suspecting that it was gravitationally bound to two other stars. But it's been hard to confirm that suspicion. The stars are the binary system Alpha Centauri A and B, and Proxima Centauri. A and B look like a single pinpoint — one of the brightest in the night sky. Proxima is a cosmic ember so faint that you need a good telescope to see it. Proxima is just four and a quarter light-years from Earth. The other two are a bit farther. But all three stars move through space in the same way. Proxima is sometimes called Alpha Centauri C, indicating that it's the third member of the system. Because of the distance between it and the stars A and B, though, that designation has been shaky. We hadn't seen enough of Proxima's possible orbit to confirm its membership. Some recent studies have solidified that membership, though. One, released last summer, carefully measured the details of the system. Among other things, it found that A and B are about half a percent farther than earlier studies had tallied — a difference of more than a hundred billion miles. It also found that A and B are slightly closer to each other. And it refined the distance from Proxima to the other two stars. The numbers increase the odds that Proxima is a member of the Alpha Centauri system — appearing to confirm that our nearest neighbors are triplets.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Proxima Centauri is our closest neighbor star — just four and a quarter light-years away. By astronomical standards, that's just down the block. Yet the star is so puny that you need a strong telescope to see it. What scientists would really like to see are the star's three known planets. They're like something from Goldilocks. The closest planet is too hot for life. The farthest planet is too cold. But the middle planet could be just right. Proxima produces a tiny fraction as much energy as the Sun does. So the “just-right” planet, Proxima Centauri b, is quite close in — about five percent of the distance from Earth to the Sun. That should place it in the star's habitable zone. That's the distance where temperatures are just right for liquid water — a key ingredient for life. The planet is a little bigger and heavier than Earth, which could make it a good home for life. And it's probably a little older than Earth, so there's been time for life to take hold. On the other hand, Proxima Centauri produces huge eruptions of radiation and charged particles. They could blast away any atmosphere the planet ever had and sterilize the surface. A team is working to send a fleet of postage-stamp-size spacecraft to Proxima Centauri. Powered by lasers on Earth, it might take as little as 20 years to make the trip. What are informational meetings with the FDA, why should you schedule them, and how should they be conducted to make them valuable and worthwhile? It's never too early to engage, interact, and collaborate with the FDA, or is it? Sometimes, it is too early to meet with the FDA if you don't have the information needed to support questions. Hola Mujerones Happy 2022! And welcome to SZN 2 of the Mujeron podcast!    So I don't know about you but the beginning of 2022 was NOT as planned and after having to take a break I started feeling guilty that I wasn't being productive enough. I began to reflect and really sit in this feeling of how often I find myself feeling unworthy or an imposter when I am not being productive.    I want to share 3 steps to detach your self worth from your productivity:   Understand that taking a break is as productive as crossing off items on your list. Recharging is so important and it its honestly crucial to getting shit done. If we don't recharge we can't function correctly and you will most likely not get things done the way you would like to if you are drained. Less is more: getting the number one priority task on your list is still gettin she done. I think about how many times I've put 10 or more things on my list while taking care of my son full time and think how crazy I was for putting that pressure. If you can narrow it down to what is priority and get that done you will feel so much more accomplished. Change your mindset around hustle and grind mentality. This is definitely easier said than done but changing our vocabulary and our mindset over all around this idea that if we don't hustle and grind all day we're not going to reach success.    I know that like me you have fallen into this cycle before because we are go getters.
