This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast has been a long time coming! Dalton Wortham with the Creek Adventure Podcast joins John this week to talk about fly fishing in Oklahoma. Dalton makes it a point to let people know that fly fishing is not just for the trout streams of the rocky mountains, or the overly wealthy. Dalton and his friends do a lot of their fly fishing in rivers and lakes right here in good ol Oklahoma, and target a vast multitude of species. If you can catch it on a regular rod and reel, there's a good chance you can catch it on a fly rod!Dalton and John talk about all aspects of fly fishing, from beginner rods to the basic gear you need to get started. John asks about some flies that work well in Oklahoma as well as other places, and a few good bodys of water people should check out. And though the guys make it a point that fly fishing is for more than just trout, they do talk about some of the great trout fishing opportunities that Oklahoma offers for both fly fishermen and rod and reel folks. There is no way you can listen to this podcast and not get at least a little curious about fly fishing, and Dalton throws out some other great resources to help people get started and learn more.
Summer means fishing! In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh catches up with Mike from FLY ALL SZN. Mike is an avid fly fisherman who has traveled the US chasing trout on the fly. From the Appalachians to the Driftless to the mountains of Idaho and even the deserts of New Mexico, Mike's passion for fly fishing has taken him all over the place. One of the unique things about Mike is how he combines his passion for fly fishing with his passion for fitness. It's common in the hunting space to see folks highlight fitness as a way of going father and staying longer while hunting. It's not everyday you hear someone talk about fishing in the same way, but Mike does!Topics covered include how FLY ALL SZN started, how Mike got into fly fishing, backcountry fly fishing adventures, and why making content looks glamorous, but often sucks! To wrap things up, Mike shares some tips for beginning fly fishermen and anglers who will be targeting the Wisconsin Driftless. Big thanks to our partners! It all started 22 years ago when a film maker wanted to showcase a unique style of catching catfish by hand called Noodling. Out of that documentary came the Okie Noodling Tournament and festival in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Today the tournament is much more than just a celebration of catching fish, but a full on family fun filled festival complete with booths, food trucks, and concerts. This weeks episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is all about the upcoming festival and noodling tournament.Jennifer Samford is a long time employee of the City of Pauls Valley and has helped organize and run the Okie Noodling Tournament for many years. Jennifer and John discuss all the fun and attractions waiting tournament goers at this weekends event. Jennifer gives all the details about how to enter the tournament, when people can start fishing, and when participants have to be at weigh in. She also highlights the concerts and live performances, as well as gives some general tips for people to have the absolute best time possible. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by new friend and guide Les Standstipher. Les and his son Keaton own and operate S&S Guide Service in the Lake Eufaula area, as well as fish the Crappie Masters National Trail. A unique aspect to this week's episode, is that John and his wife Mackenzie got to fish with Les prior to them recording this episode. So instead of just asking questions over the phone, Les got to teach John first hand. Now that John has a better grasp on the subject, his questions can be much more targeted and educational for the listeners.Les brings all his knowledge from fishing tournaments and guiding to the table this week as he and John deep dive into the crappie fishing water. They cover Les's complete rod and reel setups for both guiding and tournaments, his crappie specific boat, and all the ins and outs of finding crappie. The two talk about water temperature, depth, and clarity and how the fish react to each. Les gives an explanation of livescope technology and how he uses it, as well as how it has completely changed how people fish for crappie. Les really knows his stuff, and is also just an overall great guide and person in general.

This week on the Ohio Outdoor podcast, the guys sit down and with Jacob Knight and Derek Towles from GoWild. Jacob is an experienced flyfisherman (is that a word?) and Derek has learned over the past few years from Jacob. The guys go through the basic gear needed to get into flyfishing. There is a lot involved with getting started but Jacob and Derek break it down to a manageable format. The guys both got out on the water over the past week. Andrew was able to reel in a few walleye, while Paul was out pick up New York's saltwater Sheep head…. ? Paul did a little time in the woods, but no birds yet. Across the state and Midwest it seems as though the birds are a bit lagging with the spring. Fingers crossed the heat turns up here soon. Big things are happening at the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week. John has not one, but two exciting announcements on this episode so you are definitely not going to want to skip this one. One of those announcements has to do with this weeks guest Steve Alexander. Steve is the owner of Private Water Fishing, a north Texas based company looking to grow its presence across the Red River into Oklahoma. Private Water Fishing is a membership based company with access to over 100 private fishing lakes across Texas and Oklahoma. If you are looking for a top notch secluded fishing destination, Private Water Fishing has you covered. This company doesn't just accept any ol pond out there, and the majority of these private lakes are over 10 acres in size. Each is managed for both fish quality and to provide a great fishing experience. After a lake is booked, it has to wait through a mandatory rest period before it can be reserved again in order to keep the fish from being over pressured. Like what you're hearing? Listen to this episode and don't forget to stick around till the end for a second exciting announcement!

On this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast, John takes the microphone all to himself to tell stories and update listeners on some exciting news he got this week. Over the weekend, John fulfilled a bucket list adventure at the Blue River public fishing and hunting area managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Not only did he catch his first Oklahoma trout, but also managed to make a giant fool of himself, and get distracted by some deer sign along the way. After wrapping up the story of his fishing adventure, John shares two big deliveries that showed up at the ranch this week. One of them is going to make his upcoming deer seasons much more comfortable, and the other is an old friend that is going to help take his habitat work to the next level! John goes into detail about some exciting habitat work he has planned in the upcoming weeks, and how he now hopes to get more work done than he could have ever dreamed of.
With spring approaching we have new ways of shaking cabin fever out! This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with John Kolb. John is the founder of the Suffering Outdoors YouTube channel which showcases outdoor adventures in the Northeast, especially around his home in northern Pennsylvania. Even though John is a diehard whitetail hunter and can often be found wandering in large tracts of public land, he still enjoys spending this time of year fly fishing. Opening day of trout season in Pennsylvania is nearly a state holiday itself with thousands of anglers lining the recently stocked creek edges. However, the length of streams stocked is a fraction to the 80,000+ miles of streams throughout the Keystone State. There is more opportunity to catch native trout then most would think. John enjoys the challenge of tying his own flies and casting his fly rod into pools that are sometimes smaller than a half ton pickup truck. Everything about this type of fishing is a challenge – sometimes hiking long distances, wary fish, narrow windows to maneuver a fly rod, and John adds an additional element with a camera! Make sure you tune into some of John's fly-fishing videos that you will find informational and entertaining. While you are at it, you just might find yourself scrolling through the reels of deer hunting videos.Social Media Links:www.sufferingoutdoors.comhttps://www.facebook.com/Suffering-Outdoors-107358578191710/?ref=page_internalhttps://www.instagram.com/suffering_outdoors/https://www.youtube.com/c/SufferingOutdoors
On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Jake Batic of Indiana about the similarities between muskie fishing and whitetail hunting. Jake kicks off the show talking about why he is obsessed with fishing for the fish of 10,000 casts, the struggles that come catching that elusive fish, and some of the strategies he uses. Jakes talks about ridges, points, transition areas, edge, wind direction, and the importance of food sources... sound familiar? It's funny what we think about while sitting in the tree stand. Keep you mind open while listening to the episode. Enjoy!
On today's podcast we have a little change of pace. One of my friends, Sean McVeigh recently took up ice fishing, which has been something I've done now for a couple decades. Being so new and not really being sure of all the ins and outs, Sean and I had talked quite a bit about how to get started. This included defining what the bare necessities are and what the pros and cons are for various levels of equipment. Ice fishing is another one of those things where it seems like you can spend as much or as little as you want, but there are definitely certain areas you don't want to skimp out on. We recorded this episode in the hopes that anyone else new to ice fishing might have a resource to look into and be able to help guide their decision making process for choosing rods, augers, line, reels, shelters, and electronics.
This week's Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast guest is Alex Epperson, or more commonly known as Oklahoma's worst angler! Alex is a husband, father, Army vet, youtuber, and very passionate bass fisherman. Alex and John cover fishing the spawn in this episode, and Alex has some interesting thoughts about the timing of the spawn, and some unique tips and tactics he plans to try out this spring. Alex cut his teeth as a bank fisherman, so shallow water bass are definitely his thing. He is the first one to admit that he is not a spawn expert, but his knowledge was more than enough to teach John a few things. The thing that stands out most in this interview is Alex's passion and desire to become better at his craft, so even if you are a seasoned angler, this episode is definitely still worth a listen!
This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we shake things up with ice fishing fanatic, Don Kelly. Don is the owner of the Tackle Shack in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania and the recent weather conditions have his business in full swing. Don shared that ice fishing is growing in popularity, but it takes the right gear to be successful. Fortunately, the Tackle Shack is a one-stop-shop to get out on the ice this winter. One thing that can easily get over looked by outdoorsmen is the fact that ice fishing requires some safety gear and precautions. While breaking through ice may occur infrequently, accidents can happen and a lack of preparation could be costly. Don shares his thoughts on the tools of the trade to keep you safe, comfortable, and successful. We also talk a little about successful tactics as well as hot selling equipment for 2022. There are a ton of fishing lures out there that are famous for a certain type of species. A few examples would be the crawler harness for walleye, weedless black worm for bass, the original Dare Devil for pike. In the state of Michigan, the Jonah Jig is what many anglers recognize to be their choice of lure for vertical jigging salmon. On this episode Lee is joined by founder and creator of the Jonah Jig and no, his name is not Jonah. His name is actually Larry Jennings. Larry has literally been all over the world fishing. He shares how his travels helped shape the way he thinks about how to catch locally back in Michigan and loves how he continues to evolve as angler. On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by Lee Kleinow, fellow podcast host of Freshwater bite and MI Life Outdoors on Sportsmen's Nation and avid angler. Lee hails for the east side of Michigan enjoying the amazing opportunities that the Great Lakes provide. Together these two unpack the challenges the Great Lakes face with environmental impacts and the impact of evasive, non-native species that have worked into the watershed. After that downer, Lee goes on about the bountiful species that are available and how a hungry angler could seemingly never get bored, chasing so many fish. Nick focuses on his favorite catch, panfish in inland lakes. Wanting to improve his boom or bust trips, Lee gives Nick some pointers and tactics to chase those bluegills in the dead of summer. Finally the guys wrap up their talk with a different preparation of walleye than frying.Lee and his family live on the east side of Michigan, striking distance of the biggest freshwater fishery in the U.S. The Great Lakes also are habitat to waterfowl, major shipping lanes, and hold thousands of recreational boaters. Due to a whole host of reasons, major impacts have his the lakes. One being evasive, non native species. While asian carp are at the front door, zebra mussels have moved in and made a mess (or the opposite I guess). These mussels have multiplied without predation and filtered out vital nutrients used to feed native fish fry, and allowing sunlight to travel deeper, changing lake temps and affecting water vegetation. But on the other side of the coin, the lakes have an amazing opportunity for many species of fish, including Zee's favorite, walleye. Zee talks about the fish spawning in the Detroit River and hundreds if not thousands of anglers on hand for the event. The phrase goes, “you can hop from boat to boat and touch water.” Nick certainly is putting that on his list to do, but improving his summer panfish game is on his mind. Lee talks about sticking to early morning or evening, catching the cool hours of the day. Locating weedy deep holes to find fish saying cool and staying hidden. An adapted trick of using a ice fishing style jigging action seemed very doable for Nick who along with his rod, will be baiting and unhooking a could kiddos as well. To finish off the conversation, Zee breaks down a refined recipe for walleye. Preferring a breaded and baked approach topped with parmesan cheese and crisped up. Leaving you satisfied, but not feeling like you had a cup of grease along with the fish. Paired with a crisp cocktail or wine, you have a great meal for the middle of summer.Tappecue Meat ProbesInstagram: @tappecueWebsite: https://bit.ly/2NIr0XjCoupon Code 10% off: HUNT10 Huntavore is Powered by Simplecast

Pennsylvania is home to more than 83,000 miles of streams, many of which hold respectable native trout populations. In the past decade, many high rain events have devastated creek channels thus affecting food webs and trout populations. In addition to weather, there are a number of point and non-point pollution sources that continue to impair cold water streams. This week we interview fisheries biologist, Clayton Good, who has participated in monitoring “unassisted “streams and patterns of native fish in North Central Pennsylvania.Clayton has spent the last 8 years collecting data with state and private organizations like Trout Unlimited. In that time his passion for the sport of fishing has only grown! We tap into a bit of his working career as a fisheries biologist, the hurdles that our streams may be facing, and of course, fishing! Passion drives persistence and he has not struggled to find a way to land trout with his fly rod, whether it be in stocked creeks or the many mountain tributaries that hold native brook trout. This week on the show Jeff discusses his experiences with kayak fishing. We discuss different types of kayaks and the features each has that are good for fishing. Jeff talks about all the factors that went into his decision to purchase each of his kayaks and what features he wishes his kayak had, now that he has been put a few seasons in fishing from it. He also talks about how comfort plays a large role in being successful while fishing from a kayak, as there is much less room to adjust your position inside a small boat. Jeff also discusses how he manages his tackle box and other gear all while attempting to not lose anything into the water. Another consideration that needs to go into the decision to fish from a kayak is the boat traffic on the lake because motorized boats will create waves that can be difficult to navigate while fishing. If you have ever wondered what it is like to fish from a kayak or wanted to hear from someone who has experience doing it, this episode will answer most if not all your questions. Spring is in the air and water temps are rising! If bass weren't on your mind already, they will be after this episode. Today John is joined by bass guide and lake Eufaula record holder Bill Wright. Bill has been bass fishing for over 60 years and in the early 2000's came up with a better way to fish a Carolina rig. On a fishing trip with bass legend Jimmy Houston, the two coined the phrase "Okie Rig" and the name stuck. Bill starts with some basic tackle recommendations for those just getting into the sport, and then gives a great explanation of how bass use a lake throughout the year. John and Bill then jump into all things Okie Rig and how to fish it. If you have ever had a desire to catch more or bigger bass, this is the episode for you!
