Confusion with new “Side Pot” categories coming - How much of the whole entry goes to which pot??? Lots of the “Non-FFS Peeps” aren't happy with how the tournament has changed, and for other reasons…so I fear the entries may be much lower next year. Forward Facing Sonar and the Future of Tournament Fishing Must Note: This isn't a FFS Bash Fest. That's not the Point here. It's not going anywhere. This is only relating to tournament fishing. Tournament Fishing in general, not just walleye…is all one-dimensional now. Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor podcast your host Downrigger Dale has an amazing conversation with two of the preeminent wildlife biology researchers in the Country! They are located right here in Montana ln the University of Montana Wildlife Biology program. This is one of the highest ranked wildlife biology schools in the Country, if not the world. Rigger talked with Dr. Chad Bishop who is the Director of the program at the U of M and Dr. Andrew Whiteley who is a faculty member there at the U of M Wildlife Biology program and leads a lab focusing on conservation genetics of fish throughout Western North America! Rigger, Chad and Andrew covered some unreal topics. For example, Andrew is doing some amazing research he is, in essence, finding ways the problems caused by inbreeding in trout populations. An age old-problem that began as fish got isolated into certain areas. His work could change the future of endangered fish. His and Chad's research could go way beyond that to maybe even stop the spread of diseases in many other animals like Deer, Elk and Antelope! Chad, Andrew, other faculty and the students are working on much more as well at University of Montana. Of course, as always good old Downrigger had to push the edge of the envelope at, one point he steered the discussion into how AI is being used to help speed up research, of course thinking surely AI has not made its way into working with wildlife yet. Ooooh yes it has! Dr Bishop gave a perfect example of how he is using AI in his ungulate studies (deer, elk, antelope, etc.). You have to hear about this! They even got into the idea of possibly using gene of gene editing to help species survive things like CWD in deer and elk or Whirling disease in fish. Course Rigger had to ask if it was possible for them to get Walleye to start growing to 30 pounds! Wait a minute, can they? Watch on YouTube or listen here to find out. Heck they talked about the Flathead Lake Monster and Bigfoot! Could those really be out among us here in Montana? Find out what Dr Bishop and Dr Whiteley had to say about that! So mash that play button and watch or listen now!Links:To learn more about the U of M Wildlife Biology program click here.Click here to watch a short video about the Wildlife Biology program. To learn more about Dr. Chad Bishop click here.Click here to learn more about Dr. Andrew Whiteley.Questions? Somewhere between the complaints and the chaos, the guys get weirdly philosophical as Ryan hits Bob with some deep questions that nobody saw coming. Totally botched a Target trip and now it's possible, though unlikely, I run out of toilet paper! They're only down 2-1, but I think tomorrow is a must win game for the Walleye. He's visited everyone but me. STEAMy (and sexy) science! A literal life saver of mine has returned to the area. He is REALLY Good(e).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Along one of the best stretches of the Truckee River for fishing, a private landowner in Hirschdale has been blocking legal public access by placing no trespassing signs below the high water mark of the river. Longtime Hirschdale resident Matt “Gilligan” Koles, who's been a fly fishing guide on the Truckee River for more than two decades, has been fighting these illegally placed signs, as well as dealing with aggressive intimidation tactics involving drawn firearms by the landowner. The Truckee is considered a navigable river, meaning the public has legal access to the river below the high water mark. Nonetheless, the illegally placed signs have not moved, and the intimidation has scared most of the public away. In response, last fall, Matt and a group of fly fishing friends formed @truckeeriverpublicwaters – a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to protecting legal public access to the Truckee River. In Episode 63, the boys chat about the importance of the Truckee River, a bit of its history, a little about fishing and a lot about the access struggle community members in Hirschdale have been facing and what we as the public can do to ensure legal access is preserved. 2:00 – PowBot growing up fishing for Walleye and Northern Pike in Michigan.7:25 – Trail Whisperer growing up fishing at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.13:00 – The importance of the Truckee River to the Reno/Tahoe region.16:45 – Truckee River public access issues are happening in Hirschdale.19:35 – The story of OTB and Deer Creek trail access issues.24:00 – Public vs private land access issues and knowing your access rights.27:35 – More reminiscing about Cape Hatteras.29:10 – Whatcha been riding?30:45 – Truckee River Trivia – the river doesn't start in Lake Tahoe, there's an Upper Truckee River.31:35 – Introducing Matt “Gilligan” Koles and Truckee River Public Waters.35:30 – Senator Newlands (Newlands Act) bought a bunch of land and diverted the Truckee River.38:45 – Matt's story moving to Hirschdale and creating Gilligan's Guide Service.43:30 – What makes the Truckee River so special for fly fishing?46:10 – Lake Lahontan and the origins of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout – a native prehistoric fish.48:09 – Some unique facts about the Truckee River.49:45 – The Paiute Tribe of Pyramid Lake, water rights, drought and the reservoir system feeding the Truckee River.55:00 – Truckee River Public Waters – preserving public access along the Truckee River.56:30 – The current public access issues people are facing currently in Hirschdale.1:05:15 – The confusion over the “high water” mark on the Truckee River.1:19:00 – The Hirschdale bridge is the main access point for the Tahoe Pyramid Trail.1:22:00 – What should the public do regarding legal access to the river in Hirschdale?1:25:30 – What if you get harassed by a landowner? There has been a lot of chatter lately about changing the Minnesota walleye limit from 6 to 4. Currently, the 6 fish limit was set in 1956, with the rapid advances in sonar technology, boats, and angling hours…is it time for a change? In this week's episode, we sit down with Nate Blasing, guide and member of the Brainerd Walleye Alliance, to hear about his role in spearheading this movement. We also interview MNDNR Regional Fisheries Manager Brian Nerbonne, to get an idea of what anglers and stakeholders think of a possible change. We also touch on what current data collection strategies would help the DNR decide on this in the future.
