Send us a textToday we're diving into a fantastic tool designed to help everyday Kiwis enjoy our beautiful beaches more safely - Safeswim. Safeswim has had some bad press within the Open Water Swimming Community, but when you remember that it was built for the general public — families, casual swimmers, and anyone heading to the beach — giving clear, accessible information so you can make safe and confident decisions before getting in the water, it starts making more sense. The platform is constantly learning and evolving, and now it's even better thanks to its partnership with Surf Life Saving New Zealand. This means more accurate and timely updates, plus an improved understanding of local conditions. One of the most valuable features is that it doesn't just tell you if the water looks good — it gives you a list of real-time hazards at specific beaches, from strong currents to pollution alerts, helping you avoid surprises and stay safe.Great tool, getting better and better.

So, Caitlin killed the Pope. Since we're apparently manifestation witches, we discuss the unfortunate death of Pope Francis and what this means for the upcoming Conclave, including the top three picks for the next papal. We also woke up to the TikTok video that stopped the entire Australian nation: Kath Ebbs detailing their reunion with Jojo Siwa after their month-long stint in UK Celebrity Big Brother where the entire world watched them form a *questionable* relationship with Love Island UK alumni, Chris Hughes. Moving on to sport, we recap the weekend that was from Collingwood and Western Bulldogs' wins to the abysmal performance from the Adelaide Crows, and Caitlin's diminishing Boyfriend League. This week, we headed back to the cinemas to watch Until Dawn—a film adaptation of the popular PlayStation horror video game that allows players to choose their fate, but with a twist. Turning to more light-hearted viewing, Caitlin shares her initial thoughts on Seth Rogan's The Studio on Apple TV. Lastly, Caitlin reviews The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah before discussing her current read, Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson. His latest book is Into The Ice, an epic read about his recent voyage across the infamous Northwest Passage and the historical mysteries that lie within. The 6,736-mile journey takes 112 days, allowing Mark to give us his most personal memoir yet while weaving in the historical details of British explorer Sir John Franklin and the 128 men he led on an ill-fated expedition in the mid-19th century. The inventor of Avelo explains exactly how it works and why it's changing how people go scuba diving.Aviad Cahana invented this new system, intended to make scuba diving easier, more accessible, and just a lot more fun.Buoyancy Control is no longer an obstacle, especially for new divers and students.Scuba Diving is also somewhat restrictive due to carrying lots of weight (especially shore diving), and this reduces the overall weight a diver has on their back.Scuba Diving is not only safer with this system, but it also reduces air consumption (even for professionals). Aviad also reveals some wild research into buoyancy, weight, and wetsuits, turning what we've been teaching Open Water students upside down.Renowned underwater stunt performer, Liz Parkinson also explains her endorsement of this device. This brings the world of scuba diving much closer to the experience of freediving, without the breathhold limitations. The Avelo System is already changing the future of scuba diving. Sometimes the only way we will know is to try. In this podcast we're talking about one of the tests we have going on at the farm on trying to keep water from freezing during the winter months. The point of this is to keep open water for deer to drink. Follow along as we test this during the winter, in a time frame that most water sources near food are often frozen.

Today's episode is an incredible journey into endurance, purpose, and performance. I'm joined by Neil Gyte, who, along with his brother, swam across Loch Lomond on September 19th, 2024, as part of the Zero-Two-Lomond Challenge. That's 22 miles of open water—a 12-hour feat that tested the limits of body and mind. In our conversation, Neil shares the deeper purpose behind this ambitious challenge and the meticulous preparation, from training and nutrition to logistics and weather conditions that went into making it happen. We dive into the science of metabolic health, covering topics like fueling strategies, the role of carbohydrates in athletic performance, and the importance of metabolic flexibility. Neil also opens up about his personal health journey, his rediscovery of athleticism, and how endurance sports have transformed his life. We unpack key insights from the swim, including data from blood tests-thanks to SiPhox Health-and continuous glucose monitors, understanding how the body responds during fasting and exercise, and the critical role sleep plays in hormone regulation and performance. Plus, Neil reflects on the mental and emotional challenges of endurance sports, his career transition from Google to metabolic health, and the lessons learned along the way. This episode is packed with inspiration, science, and actionable insights for athletes, wellness enthusiasts, and anyone looking to push their limits. We all learn in Open Water 101 that diving uses a 'buddy system" for several reasons. These reasons include equipment redundancy in case of failure, enjoyment of the dive, and sharing the experience. BUT, is a "buddy" enough? Too often the "buddy" is nothing more than a "body" and the asset that the system proclaims to be is actually a liability. Find out what happens when two divers become paired up randomly at the spur of the moment on a pretty routine recreational dive. How can the dive community work towards improving and avoiding this all too common occurrence? Have a listen!!
There are many cultures worldwide and throughout history that have valued age and wisdom. Yet in the US today, ageism is prevalent. Too many modern Americans of a certain age who feel self-conscious about making a reference to an old TV show or a phenomenon from a while back often use the expression, “I'm dating myself.” Disparaging our age can be toxic. We're all aging, and age can bring with it many gifts, especially if, along the way, we're accruing wisdom, learning more, and improving ourselves. While we can bemoan the realities of ageism, a better option is to do something. Paul Walborsky (https://openwater.group/) decided to take that option and he created an enterprise that may benefit people of any age. Paul is a seasoned executive and founder whose CV includes SVP at The New York Times, and CEO of multiple startups that have been acquired by giants like Meta. He is currently the co-founder and CEO of OpenWater, an organization whose mission is to connect seasoned professionals with decades of experience and showcase their wisdom to the world. So, listen in as Paul talks about aging, wisdom, and the strengths of these traits.

In June of 1975 we were exposed to one of the scariest movies ever made. For this podcaster, it's just not Independence Day until I watch it – and you still can't get me to swim in the ocean. We'll look at what made ‘Jaws' so successful… and so frightening. We'll also look at the true story of a string of shark attacks in 1916 that inspired the novel and the film. And while 1975's ‘Jaws' was inspired by a series of shark attacks but greatly fictionalized, the film ‘Open Water' from 2003 is based on a very real and terrifying story. But the truth behind the movie is a dark mystery that goes way beyond the horror of what you see in the film. We'll look at several other real shark attacks that are almost too incredible to believe, and also try to answer the question as to why shark attacks don't happen more often as you would expect them to, seeing as humans should be easy pickings.
