Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 18, 2023 is: zenith ZEE-nith noun Zenith refers to the strongest or most successful period of time for a person or thing. // At the zenith of her music career in the early 2000s, she released her best-selling album to date. See the entry > Examples: "Once deemed ‘one of the most underrated musicians in rock history' by David Bowie, John Cale is best known as the viola-scraping Velvet Underground co-founder who grounded the group in the avant-garde. But those years hardly marked a creative zenith for Cale. Since leaving the band in 1968, he has released more than a dozen solo albums, ranging in style from orchestral pop to new wave and punk; collaborated with luminaries like Patti Smith and Brian Eno; and scored numerous films." — Olivia Horn, The New York Times, 18 Aug. 2023 Did you know? When you reach the zenith, you're at the top, the pinnacle, the summit, the peak. Zenith developed from an Arabic phrase meaning "the way over one's head," and then traveled through Old Spanish, Medieval Latin, and Middle French before arriving in English. As long ago as the 1300s, English speakers used zenith to name the highest point in the celestial heavens, directly overhead. By the 1600s, zenith was being used for other high points as well. The celestial term is often contrasted with nadir, which refers to the point that is vertically downward from the observer (imagine a line going through the Earth from the observer's feet and out the other side into the sky). Figuratively, nadir simply means "the lowest point."

This week we sit down with comedian, actress, and content creator Jasmine Ruiz to discuss all things from being a “girl's girl” to whether or not they'd allow their significant others to be friends with someone they've been physical with in the past and lots more. Zee brings up the point that a lot of women use the rhetoric “girl's girl” to weaponize other women who may not agree with them or hold the same morals as them. From her experience, the term has been used against her over a man, and if she doesn't see certain situations the same as others. Why do women make up these terms and instead of using it to empower other women, they instead use it to gaslight them? Let's discuss. Jasmine shares some of her journey as a content creator, in addition to dating a fan, and contrary to popular belief, not using comedy to shoot her shot at men. While her content has gained a lot of traction on social media, Jas says she prefers to not date a man who is familiar with what she does or who she is online. We also speak about if we are okay with our significant others being friends with someone they'd has sexual relations with in the past. While a lot of the women said it was a hard no for them, Zina actually saw nothing wrong with it. At the end of the day, if that person and your partner respects you and provides reassurance and security, is it really an issue? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Dr. Zabina Bhasin began her journey of understanding the powerful role toys play in shaping a child's identity. As a child psychiatrist, she used her expertise to observe that children were naturally drawn towards toys, books, and crafts. Yet, as a mother, she noticed a distinct gap in the market - there were no multicultural or ethnic studies toys. This realization sparked an idea, a vision to create a space where children could learn about various cultures and traditions, and feel a sense of belonging. This was the birth of In KidZ, a company that was much more than just a toy manufacturer. It was a creator of connections, a builder of bridges between cultures, and a purveyor of inclusivity. No longer would children ask insensitive questions about one another's backgrounds. Instead, through play, they would learn to appreciate and respect the beautiful diversity of the world around them. Awards and nominations not only serve as a form of recognition but also validation of an entrepreneur's efforts. They can be instrumental in boosting morale and signaling excellence within the industry. Acknowledgment of one's work can also raise public awareness about the mission or cause the entrepreneur is passionate about. Reflecting on her own nomination for the TOTY awards, Dr. Zabina Bhasin expresses her gratitude and sense of validation. It's evident that these recognitions mean the world to her as they support her aim to make an impact in the lives of children through her culturally diverse and inclusive toys. This testament reassures listeners about the commitment and dedication behind her work. This award-nominated change maker will be at New York Toy Fair at booth #4821. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
In this episode, we explore Elon Musk's fascination with the letter X and its impact on Twitter's rebranding. Our panel of experts includes Mekey Gabriel, a financial and economic expert from Houston, Corey Bernard, a political pundit from Manchester, Leah Brown from Kent, and Zee Cohen Sanchez, a political activist and CEO from New York.Twitter's recent rebranding to "X" has sparked heated discussions. Zee expresses skepticism, believing that Twitter's iconic branding was a key strength, and this move risks alienating its long-time users. Corey highlights Twitter's influence on political discourse, describing it as both democratising and contributing to the debasement of politicians. Leah adds that Twitter's power lies in diversifying perspectives, but it also coarsens dialogue and debases expertise. Zee points out that Twitter's threads may not fully replace the unique features of the platform. Still, they could have potential if further developed, but the current shift to "X" raises concerns about the platform's direction. In this episode, we delve into the economic challenges facing the UK, known as stagflation. The country's economy has seen no real growth since mid-2022, and inflationary pressures persist, leading to widespread labor disputes. The Bank of England, under Andrew Baillie's leadership, is conducting a review and preparing for prolonged inflation. The UK's economic issues are perceived to be more complex and severe than those of other major economies. Brexit, credibility concerns in economic governance, and underinvestment in public health and transport services add to the difficulties. The upcoming general election adds further complexity to the situation. We discuss the impact of increasing housing costs, rising homelessness, surging energy prices, and soaring food inflation, along with rising transport expenses and the North-South divide. The financial markets are concerned about Britain's economic state due to its interconnectedness with the global economy. Despite Brexit, the UK remains relevant in international markets. The podcast panelists discuss the need for changing leadership at the Bank of England and implementing policies to improve economic sentiment and alleviate financial pressures on citizens.Beyond economic challenges, the UK faces crises in various sectors, including train and doctor strikes, police and public broadcaster issues, legal backlogs, and the migrant crisis. Government intervention in bank affairs, rolling back on green initiatives, and windfall profits from energy suppliers are also contributing factors. The podcast episode concludes by highlighting the importance of addressing inflationary pressures and finding solutions to restore economic stability in the UK. Hosted on Acast.
