Dinsdag 4 september 2001. Bij de Noordpier van IJmuiden woedt een flinke storm, waardoor de branding is veranderd in een kolkende witte massa. Een zeiljacht van 12 meter ligt stuurloos tegen de pier en wordt door metershoge brekers op de betonblokken geslagen. De redders van KNRM IJmuiden en Wijk aan Zee varen uit op wat een loze melding lijkt van een leeg reddingsvlot, maar vinden een schip dat elk moment in stukken kan breken, met drenkelingen in acuut levensgevaar. Schippers Leendert Langbroek (IJmuiden) en Ruud van Wilgenburg (Wijk aan Zee) komen in de "rothoek" voor een bloedlinke uitdaging te staan. Ruud zet de reddingboot met precisie tegen het wrak om de eerste man te redden, maar door de onvoorspelbare golven slaan een tweede drenkeling én een redder overboord in de woeste zee. Terwijl Leendert een derde, verdwaasde man in zijn onderbroek van het sloopklare jacht probeert te plukken, trotseren de bemanningen de brute kracht van de pier en de zee, waar elke fout fataal kan zijn.
