Having spent his early years in London, Mark Ronson grew up in Manhattan, began working as a DJ as a teenager and quickly made a name for himself on the New York club scene of the 1990s. He moved into music production and, in 2006, co-wrote and co-produced the Amy Winehouse album Back To Black. The record won five Grammys and Mark Ronson himself scooped the Producer of the Year Award. Since then, he has released five solo albums and worked with some of the most successful names in pop including Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Queens Of The Stone Age and Paul McCartney. The winner of ten Grammys and two Brits, he added an Academy Award to his list of accolades in 2018 as co-writer of the song Shallow from the film A Star Is Born. He was also Oscar nominated for his work as executive producer, composer and songwriter for the soundtrack to the Barbie movie. More recently he has written a book called Night People, a memoir about his time as a DJ in 90s New York. Mark Ronson tells John Wilson about the influence of his music-loving parents, who often threw parties at their north London home when he was a child. He talks about the influence of his stepfather Mick Jones, songwriter, guitarist and producer of the 80s rock band Foreigner, who allowed Mark to experiment with equipment in his home studio in New York and encouraged his early interest in production. He remembers how hearing the 1992 track They Reminisce Over You by Pete Rock and CL Smooth led him to pursue a career as a club DJ and become renowned for the diverse range of music he played in clubs - from soul and hip-hop to classic rock - an eclectic approach which later informed his work as a producer. Mark Ronson also recalls first meeting Amy Winehouse and how they wrote and recorded the songs for her Back To Black album. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Parvati Shallow on femininity and flirtation as reality TV weapons, and how the "Black Widow" moniker cast a shadow on her real-life relationships. Parvati talks about her strange childhood informed her decision to compete on Survivor, how reality TV has evolved, and how she has evolved with it. She's been a contestant on The Traitors, Deal or No Deal Island, and five seasons of Survivor, and being seen as a vixen-coded "villain" has given her a singular look into the expectations for women on screen and off. A fascinating conversation with one of the greats. New York Times columnist and bestselling author **David Brooks** joins Srini Rao to unpack what it really means to know and see another person — and how our ability to connect deeply has deteriorated in a world dominated by distraction, paradigmatic thinking, and judgment. Drawing from his latest book *How to Know a Person*, Brooks explores emotional architecture, the danger of moral detachment, the layers of trauma and transformation, and the developmental life tasks that shape our identities.Through deeply personal stories — including his own journey through divorce, emotional avoidance, and the workaholic tendencies that nearly derailed his relationships — Brooks offers a rare and unfiltered view of what it means to grow wiser. He shares the practices of “illuminators” who make others feel seen, the humble posture of accompaniment, and how curiosity, patience, and vulnerability are the cornerstones of human flourishing. This is a conversation about becoming unmistakable by showing up as fully human. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What if a mikveh has 40 se'ah of water but it's too shallow for a person to immerse in? Can you simply add mayim she'uvim (drawn water) to make it kosher? This sugya in Chagigah 11a gets into the lomdus of shiur mikveh — whether 40 se'ah is a definition of mikveh volume or a requirement for practical tevillah. The Ra'ah holds you can't fix it with added water; the Rashba says you can. This core machlokes shapes how we understand the very essence of what makes a mikveh kosher.

Shallow faith doesn't always look dangerous. In fact, it often feels safe, respectable, and comfortable. But it's one of the greatest barriers to living an empowered life in Christ. In this message, we look at Jesus' Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13 and uncover how different heart conditions impact our ability to grow, bear fruit, and live empowered by the Spirit. Are you standing safely on the shore with the crowd—or stepping into the deep with Jesus?
In this interview of the Philosophy Bites podcast Nigel Warburton interviews David Edmonds about Peter Singer's famous thought experient about what you would do if you saw a child at risk of drowning in a shallow pond, and what the moral implications of that. David has recently published a book about this thought experiment called Death in a Shallow Pond.
We're so glad you are here! Thanks for checking out Sunday's message!-- SUNDAY'S NOTES --Once again Jesus began teaching by the lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the shore. He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables, such as this one: Mark 4:1-2 NLTNot everyone who comes to hear the truth is there to actually listen.Listen! A farmer (sower) went out to sow some seed. Mark 4:3 NLTWithout the Godly seed being sown we have no hope of having deep healthy roots that bear Godly fruit! As he scattered it across his field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it. Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn't have deep roots, it died. Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! Mark 4:4-8 NLT And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Mark 4:9 ESV Honestly and Intentionally listening will give the seed of God's word an opportunity to take root in our lives. When they were off by themselves, those who were close to him, along with the Twelve, asked about the stories. He told them, “You've been given insight into God's kingdom, you know how it works. But to those who can't see it yet, everything comes in stories, creating readiness, nudging them toward a welcome awakening. These are people, Whose eyes are open but don't see a thing, Whose ears are open but don't understand a word, Who avoid making an about-face and getting forgiven.” Mark 4:10-12 MSG Anyone who will lay down their deeply rooted previous perspectives, and truly wants to hear, will hear. And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word. Mark 4:13 ESVHumility is a huge indicator of the condition of the soil of our hearts. The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message, only to have Satan come at once and take it away. But since they don't have deep roots, they don't last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God's word. Mark 4:15-16 NLTShallow roots are the result of enthusiasm without a willingness to do the real work of going deep with God. The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God's word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced. Mark 4:17-18 NLTThe rocks deter the root, while the weeds the destroy the fruit. Weeds hide and grow, even thrive in the un-surrendered places in our hearts.Repentance isn't just saying you're sorry; it's re-aligning your heart with God's way, truth and life! And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God's word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” Mark 4:20 NLTToday, if you hear his voice, do not harden your heart. Today, we are joined by Dr. Daniel Willingham.Dr. Daniel T. Willingham is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, known for his work applying cognitive psychology to K-16 education. He earned his B.A. from Duke University and his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Harvard University. Initially, his research focused on the brain basis of learning and memory, but he later shifted his focus to the practical applications of cognitive science in education. He is the author of several books, including Why Don't Students Like School?, When Can You Trust the Experts?, and The Reading Mind.In this continuation of our conversation, we explore the practical applications of cognitive science for learning and development. Dr. Willingham breaks down complex concepts around knowledge, intelligence, expertise, and practice while challenging common misconceptions about how we learn. From understanding what IQ really measures to debunking the myth of general critical thinking skills, he provides evidence-based insights that reshape how we should approach learning both in educational settings and professional development.Key topics include:-Why background knowledge is essential for retaining new information and understanding context -The relationship between knowledge and skills and why they cannot be separated -How chunking works and why experts see patterns that novices cannot recognize -The two components of IQ: fluid intelligence (working memory) vs crystallized intelligence (knowledge) -Why IQ can be changed and what it actually measures versus what people think it measures -The progression from rote to shallow to deep knowledge and when each is appropriate -How experts organize knowledge differently than novices, not just know more -Why knowledge transfer is so difficult and domain-specific, even within similar contexts -Whether critical thinking can be taught and the limitations of general thinking skills -The essential role of practice in learning and why there are no shortcuts to proficiency -Deliberate practice principles and how to identify weaknesses to improve systematically -Three forces that shape learning mindset: social comparisons, friendships, and family values -Why adults need to shift from grades-based to application-based measures of success -The challenges and opportunities AI presents for effective learning strategiesWhether you're designing training programs, teaching others, or working to improve your own learning, Dr. Willingham's research-backed insights challenge popular but ineffective approaches and provide a clearer understanding of how learning actually works.Dr. Daniel Willingham's Books: danielwillingham.com/booksDr. Willingham's Website: danielwillingham.com-Website and live online programs: http://ims-online.comBlog: https://blog.ims-online.com/Podcast: https://ims-online.com/podcasts/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlesgood/Twitter: https://twitter.com/charlesgood99Chapters:(00:00) Introduction(01:40) Why Background Knowledge Helps Retain New Information (06:00) Chunking and How Experts Organize Knowledge Differently(08:00) The Two Components of IQ and Why It Can Be Changed (12:00) From Rote to Shallow to Deep Knowledge(15:00) Why Knowledge Transfer Is So Difficult and Domain-Specific (20:00) Can Critical Thinking Be Taught as a General Skill? Series Title: A Return to Disciple-Making Sermon Title: From Shallow to Deeper Sermon Scripture: James 1:19-27 Key Point: “From shallow to deeper, a disciple must put into practice what he/she learns from Scripture.”
This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss director Spike Lee's latest film "Highest 2 Lowest" starring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, and A$AP Rocky. The film follows a music mogul, David King, who's life gets flipped upside down when his son is kidnapped and held for ransom.
In the second episode of Redefining Energy Tech, Lyle Trytten (aka the Nickel Nerd) joins host Michael Barnard to explore the controversial world of seabed mining. The discussion focuses on The Metals Company (TMC), Impossible Metals, and their efforts in the Clarion Clipperton Zone.A significant milestone was recently announced: for the first time, a pre-feasibility study claimed 50 million tons of declared reserves out of 360 million tons of identified seabed resources. While notable, the credibility of this claim is in question. Unlike Canadian and Australian standards that require independent certification, TMC's study relied on internal sources—raising concerns about transparency and trustworthiness.Mining has always carried uncertainty, and seabed operations are even riskier. Most mining projects miss their cost, scope, and timeline estimates—and deep-sea ventures amplify these risks. TMC's proposed system involves a massive vacuum operating at 4,000 meters below sea level, connected to a 7-kilometer riser pipe hauling nodules to the surface. The technology is approaching mid-to-high readiness. In contrast, Impossible Metals is developing small autonomous vehicles to pick nodules selectively. While innovative, their tech is at a lower readiness level (around 3–4) and still grappling with deep-sea navigation—more science fiction than reality for now.Even if extraction is successful, processing presents a massive challenge. TMC has an agreement with a Japanese smelter for 1 million tons per year, but global demand calls for 9 million tons of new processing capacity. Indonesia, through China-led ventures, dominates the nickel supply chain with tightly integrated mining and smelting. TMC's proposal to build two U.S. refineries underscores how far behind the West is in infrastructure and planning. History isn't encouraging either—many Western nickel laterite projects have failed, while Chinese efforts succeed due to end-to-end alignment of mining, processing, and market demand. The conversation also revealed deeper systemic issues. The West has allowed mining and metallurgy education to deteriorate. The U.S. now produces a fraction of the engineers it once did, while China graduates the majority of the world's mining specialists. Reversing that trend could take a generation. Meanwhile, seabed mining risks following the path of hydrogen for transport: overhyped, slow to materialize, and economically weak compared to better alternatives. Consumers are already pushing back on seabed minerals due to environmental and ethical concerns. If deep-sea mining ever becomes viable, China is best positioned to lead. A new global treaty could further hinder seabed mining. The High Seas Treaty—now ratified by over 60 nations and set to become international law in January—prioritizes a precautionary approach to ocean activities and aims to protect nearly a third of international waters. It also includes provisions for sharing profits from marine genetic resources. While the U.S. has signed, it has yet to ratify the agreement. Looking ahead, EV adoption continues to accelerate, but resource strategies must be grounded in reality. Pursuing high-cost, speculative mineral sources powered by clean energy doesn't make sense when direct electrification offers more immediate gains. A strong critical minerals strategy in the West will require renewed investment in education, strategic alliances, and a focus on scaling practical, proven technologies—not just what looks impressive on a slide deck.

In a world that often feels dominated by technology and constant change, it's easy to forget that some people are still living by the rhythms of ancient traditions. James Rebanks, an author and shepherd, is one of them, and in today's episode, he shares what following a way of life that has endured for thousands of years can teach us about modern life and the things that matter.James offers a glimpse at the often ignored and misunderstood world of pastoral life in England's Lake District, which isn't just about working with sheep and cattle but maintaining a deep connection to past generations, a commitment to community, and a sense of purpose. He takes us through the life of a fell shepherd, where the timeless values of hard work, seasonality, stewardship, and stillness still get lived out day to day.Resources Related to the PodcastJames' booksGrazing SchoolThe Poetics of Manhood by Michael HerzfeldBraiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall KimmererDying Breed article: 5 Things Farmers Have Taught Me About Work, Life, and LegacyWendell Berry's booksRegeneratist Allen WilliamsRegeneratist Greg JudyConnect With James RebanksJames on XJames on IGSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
