Guests: Former Blue Jays catcher and broadcaster Alan Ashby; Toronto Star baseball columnist Gregor Chisholm This week in Deep Left Field, we head down to Dunedin, Florida as the Star's Gregor Chisholm wraps up his week at Blue Jays spring training. We check in with Gregor about what he's seen from the Jays and get his thoughts on, among other things, how Kazuma Okamoto has been looking, why Anthony Santander didn't have his shoulder surgery much earlier and how Eric Lauer feels about being overlooked for a spot in the Jays' rotation once again. Also, we get into the wayback machine as the Jays get set for their 50th anniversary season and talk to Alan Ashby, who caught 124 games in the Blue Jays inaugural season, 1977. All that plus a dip into the mailbag at deepleftfield@thestar.ca!
Bee Season in Full Swing: The February 18 edition of the AgNet News Hour focused on one of the most critical — and often overlooked — inputs in California agriculture: bees. With almond bloom underway across the Central Valley and storms rolling through the state, hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill dedicated much of the program to pollination, hive health, and why timing is everything during this narrow three- to four-week window. Papagni opened the show reflecting on recent rainstorms and the importance of moisture heading into peak bloom. While rain is welcome for reservoirs and soil profiles, it complicates pollination logistics. Bees don't fly in heavy rain, cold temperatures, or high winds, and muddy orchards can delay hive placement. With bloom percentages already climbing, growers without secured hives could find themselves in a tight spot. The episode featured an in-depth interview with Daniel Taran, Field Marketing Manager for BeeHero, who explained how technology is changing the pollination game. Traditionally, growers rely on a standard rate of two hives per acre. BeeHero takes a more data-driven approach, using in-hive sensors to measure colony strength and frame counts before deployment. That transparency gives growers confidence they're receiving strong, active colonies — not underperforming boxes. Taran noted that nearly every commercial beehive in the country eventually makes its way to California for almond pollination. Given the scale of the industry, even minor colony losses can tighten supply. Last year's elevated losses due to Varroa mite resistance highlighted how fragile the system can be. While conditions appear improved this season, demand remains extremely high, and theft of beehives — sometimes worth hundreds of dollars each — continues to be an issue across rural counties. The hosts also emphasized the biological side of the story. Bees are responsible for pollinating roughly one-third of the food humans consume. Worker bees live about 30 to 40 days, while queens can live several years. During bloom, bees work quickly and methodically, foraging from the closest flowers and returning repeatedly to their hive. With only one shot at pollination each season, successful bloom directly determines final yields. Beyond bees, the program also featured interviews from World Ag Expo, including Alexandra Duarte's California Senate campaign update and agronomic insights from AgroLiquid and Valent on post-rain nutrition and pest management. But pollination remained the central theme: without bees, there is no almond crop. As Papagni put it, water, labor, freight, and regulations matter — but without healthy hives in the orchard right now, nothing else counts.

In this episode, host Bret Schanzenbach, President & CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, sits down with Scott Morris, local Encinitas native, serial entrepreneur, and co-founder/general partner of The Bermuda Club.Scott traces his journey from La Costa Canyon High School to UCLA and the University of Chicago Law School, then into big-firm life at Latham & Watkins during the 2008 financial crisis. When litigation work dried up, he leaned into his entrepreneurial side, leaving the firm to build Rochambeau, a fun, flexible, kid-proof eyewear brand that has expanded into kids' prescription eyewear, including a Blippi-branded line. He also recounts co-founding Detroit City Distillery with friends from law school. From there, Scott explains how his love of business building and community evolved into The Bermuda Club, a private-membership space in Carlsbad designed around his mantra “Work well, play well, be well.” The club combines:Coworking: Coffee-shop-style open workspaces, private offices, and phone boothsWellness: Gym, custom sauna, cold plunges, and on-site trainers and wellness partnersSocial & Play: Four Full Swing golf simulators, putting greens, events, and member-driven clubsScott and Bret highlight the organic community that has formed within the club—businesses like Low Notes canned wine operating from the space, the Triangle Traders investment club, a member-barber offering on-site cuts, and educational talks from local experts like MedHero. They also discuss:The club's membership cap of 200 and its near-full statusUnique corporate and private events, including simulator golf scrambles and holiday partiesStrong partnerships with Carlsbad's golf ecosystem (Full Swing, Callaway, TravisMathew, up-and-coming putter brands)Plans to expand Bermuda Club locations into Sorrento Valley/Del Mar, Rancho Bernardo, and Costa Mesa, powered in part by member investorsIf you're curious about where high-energy coworking, wellness, golf, and community intersect in North County San Diego, this conversation is a must-listen.Quotes“Our slogan is ‘Work well, play well, be well'—that's The Bermuda Club in a nutshell.”“We thought the golf simulators would be the star, but they turned out to be the bonus. The real magic is the people.”“We've already had multiple businesses start from people who met at the club—that's the power of community.”“Some members come for the golf, some for the gym, but most stay because they've found their people.”“If you'd told me a year ago we'd already be raising money for three more clubs, I'd have thought you were nuts.” Did this episode have a special impact on you?
