Graphic design is a big part of communicating conservation, and even though it's a visual art, it often takes place behind the scenes in a busy communication team setting. Smokey Solis is the graphic designer for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, and like many of us, he wears many hats and has other duties as assigned, but it all comes back to good design. Smokey talked with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Tim Akimoff, host of the Outdoor Communicators Podcast, about how he got started in graphic design for a conservation agency and about what good design means to a team of people working together to convey many complicated aspects of fish and wildlife management. They migtht also have touched on tinned fish and tea, as Smokey and Tim share many affinities for fine tasting things and great design.  Questions about graphic design in conservation communication? Please feel free to reach out directly to Smokey Solis about those.  Smokey Solis Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation - 1801 N. He is a shining example of why Housing First is so important and effective.   Since his time as a participant, Jay has been steadily working his way up in the agency. Once he stabilized, he was hired as part-time on-call staff, and since been promoted twice and earned three different certifications through Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Use Services, which he puts to great use serving Tulsans in need.  It was a treat to have this conversation with Jay, as he shared his experience with homelessness, what guided him through recovery and the goals he's set for himself. His drive is strong and his positivity is contagious.  After this recording, Jay emailed a follow-up thought: He wants anyone who may be struggling right now to know that if they connect with us and utilizes the services offered at MHAOK, they will be supported as they work to achieve their goals. EPISODE 198 DETAILS Why Lactipro As A Probiotic For Cattle How Lactipro Works As A Probiotic For Cattle  Introduction to Lactipro Lactipro is a rumen-native probiotic containing a live, stable strain of Megasphaera elsdenii (Mega e®), an effective lactic acid utilizer. It helps cattle producers maintain healthy rumen pH and improve profitability by accelerating finishing diets and reducing post-terminal processing mortality. Key Benefits of Lactipro Shortens step-up period by 50% or more Reduces post-terminal processing performance losses Supports rumen health in hospital cattle Lactipro promotes rumen health during transitions to higher-grain diets, grazing crop residue, and as bulls move to higher energy diets during development. How Does Lactipro Work? Naturally occurring Mega e takes weeks to handle grain-based diets effectively. Fast-growing bacteria produce excessive lactic acid, lowering rumen pH and causing health issues like acidosis. Lactipro introduces Mega e directly into the rumen, consuming lactic acid and producing butyric acid, which promotes cell growth and better VFA absorption. The Importance of Mega e Strain MS Biotec's patented Mega e strain is selected for its: Rapid growth and resilience Production of butyric acid Compatibility with feed additives Enhanced rumen fermentation with other microbials Two Formulations of Lactipro LactiproNXT® An easy-to-use drench available in 200 mL and 1,000 mL pouches, ideal for processing multiple cattle. LactiproFLX® A small capsule in a 25-capsule resealable pouch, perfect for individual animals or small groups. Administration Both formulations provide equal bacterial counts and are effective, with an extended shelf life requiring refrigeration. LactiproFLX comes in three types: Dairy – for replacement heifers and mature cows Feedlot – for feedlot cattle and developing bulls Calf – for young calves Use Cases Accelerated Step-Up Shortens step-up period by 50% or more for a faster diet transition. Terminal Processing Reduces post-terminal processing performance losses. Other Use Cases Supports rumen health during diet transitions, grazing, and bull development phases. Integrating Lactipro ensures a healthier rumen, leading to better overall cattle health and profitability. Latest Cattle Industry News North Carolina Man Pleads In Nation-Wide Cattle Theft Conspiracy According to the U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina and MeatingPlace.com, a North Carolina man pleaded guilty to implementing a scheme to steal $1 million worth of cattle across the country. From April 2018 to October 2022, William Dalton Edwards, 25, of Mount Airy, N.C., and an accomplice defrauded livestock markets in North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma and Virginia by writing worthless checks for cattle purchases, according to the plea. The stolen cattle were then transported out of state and resold, resulting in losses exceeding $1 million to family-owned sales barns. Edwards' guilty plea includes charges of conspiring to defraud the U.S. and violate federal laws. The statutory maximum sentence for the offense is five years in prison. Edwards is currently out on bond, with a sentencing date yet to be determined. U.S. Beef Export Value Nears Two-Year High The value of U.S. beef exports hit a near two-year high in June, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) commented late last week. Despite lower volume compared to a year ago, US beef exports in June were worth $938.3 million, a 22-month peak.  Exports to Japan rose, and Taiwan continued buying US beef at near-record levels. Exports to Canada were at a near-decade high. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said June beef exports performed very well in Japan, which was great to see given the significant headwinds U.S. beef has faced there this year. Export value also rebounded nicely in Korea and shipments to Taiwan and Canada were outstanding. This made for another strong month in terms of export value per head slaughtered, which was nearly $460 in June. Beef export value per head of fed slaughter was up 13% in June from a year ago. For the first six months of 2024, beef export value was $5.22 billion, 5% higher than the same period a year earlier. Beef export value per head of fed slaughter was more than $418 for the first half, an increase of 6% from the same period in 2023. Asian Longhorned Tick Confirmed In Oklahoma The invasive Asian longhorned tick has been found in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, confirmed the presence of this non-native arachnid, which was found in Mayes County.  Asian longhorned ticks are light brown and extremely small in size. The Asian longhorned tick was first detected in the United States in 2017 when it was found in New Jersey. Oklahoma is now the 20th state to confirm a case of Asian longhorned tick. Asian longhorned ticks are native to China, Japan and Korea. They can vector both human and animal diseases and cause severe anemia in animals. With the confirmation of this invasive species, the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry  encourages all Oklahoma residents to report additional Asian longhorned tick encounters to the state.   Western Video Market Live America Sale - Cheyenne, Wyoming Western Video Market Live America sale results HERE. It's Tuesday, July 30th, A.D. 2024. This is The World View in 5 Minutes written by Kevin Swanson and  heard at www.TheWorldView.com.  Filling in for Adam McManus I'm Ean Leppin. Increased Violence Towards Pro-Lifers Certain people who advocate the killing of children in their mother's wombs are acting more violent towards people who oppose killing babies. Police have arrested a man who attacked two elderly men outside an abortion clinic in Baltimore Maryland last year. Both 80 year old Mark Crosby and 73 year old Dick Schaeffer were injured. . . Crosby's “plate bone in his upper right cheek is completely fractured and the bones in his right eye orbit are completely shattered and will have to be replaced with metal,” according to Baltimore County Right to Life. Also, an 83 year old woman was shot in the back while distributing pro-life literature in Lake Odessa, Michigan just prior to the 2022 election. Psalm 10 points out that “The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God;   He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the secret places he murders the innocent . . . He has said in his heart, “God has forgotten; He hides His face; He will never see. Arise, O Lord. O God, lift up Your hand!” Pastor in Laos Assassinated Another pastor in Laos has been assassinated — at least the second in two years. Pastor Thongkham of Vanghay village in northwestern Laos, was being closely monitored by the authorities. . . and, He had been warned several times to stop his “Christian activities, according to Morning Star News.  Then, last week the pastor was shot to death by a masked assailant. Another  prominent Christian leader from the Baw tribe in Khammouanne Province, central Laos, recently avoided capture at the hands of government agents. According to local sources, the pastor was warned by a family friend of authorities planning to kidnap and possibly kill him. Despite the increased persecution, the Laotian church is rapidly growing every year, with hundreds of Khmu coming to the Lord.  Venezuelan Dictator Claims Victory in the Election No surprise here. Venezuelan's dictator-president, Nicholas Maduro claims a victory in the nation's election over the weekend.  The opposition led by Edmundo Gonzalez also claimed victory, based on unofficial exit polls.  US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed “serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people.”   BLINKEN: “We've seen the announcement, just a short while ago, by the Venezuelan electoral commission.  We have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people.  It's critical that every vote be counted fairly and transparently; that election officials immediately share information with the opposition and independent observers without delay, and that the electoral authorities publish the detailed tabulation of votes.  The international community is watching this very closely, and will respond accordingly.” One quarter to one third of Venezuelans are planning to leave the country (according to recent polls), if the communist dictator remains in power. Almost 8 million Venezuelans have already left, and these results could mean another 7 million to leave the communist country. . . or about 50% of the population in all - many of whom end up in the United States.  US Stock Prices Vary Wildly US stock prices are varying wildly in an extremely volatile market. . . especially the top 7 tech stocks of Tesla, Nvidia, Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple. Since June 10th, the 7 stocks gained  $1.77 trillion in valuation, and then lost it all in the last week. Incredibly, the seven stocks had gained 6.5 Trillion since January — an almost 50% increase in value in just 6 months! Tesla has lost 70% of its value in the last 15 months,  California Park Fire 6th Largest in CA History The California Park Fire burning some 80 miles north of the state capital has already consumed 368,000 acres — now slated as the 6th largest fire in California history. 9 out of 10 of California's worst fires have occurred in the last 6 years.  Oregon is experiencing its worst fire season since 2020 - -including the 288,000 acre Durkee Blaze. Keep in mind Psalm 89: “O Lord God of hosts. . . You rule the raging of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them.” Deadpool and Wolverine Glorifies Wickedness The most popular movie release last weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine. . . supports abortion, glorifies vengeful mass killings, includes 150 profanities, and makes light of and supports every form of sexual sin — including bestiality, homosexuality, bisexuality, and worse. The mass culture-  nihilist flick produced by Disney raked in $438 million in its first weekend out, setting the record for the highest grossing opening weekend for an R-rated movie. And it remains the biggest blockbuster of the summer. Controversy Around Oklahoma State Mandate Concerning the Bible Controversy surrounds the Oklahoma state mandate that all classrooms be furnished with copies of the Bible, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and, like Louisiana, the Ten Commandments — only to reflect on the impact of the Bible on history, culture, and Western Civilization.  While some school districts are resisting the requirements, Superintendent Ryan Walters, issued a warning on X, quoted: “We will not allow rogue districts and administrators to indoctrinate hatred of America by refusing to teach foundational Oklahoma standards.” The guidelines issued by the Oklahoma Department of Education require that quote “all instruction is conducted in a neutral and objective manner. Teachers must not promote or favor any religious beliefs, focusing solely on the historical and literary aspects of the Bible.”  And, that the Bible is “not to be used for religious purposes such as preaching, proselytizing or indoctrination.” Reactions to the Olympic Opening Ceremony More reactions have come out of the Opening ceremonies for the Olympics in Paris which included a blasphemous depiction of the Last Supper, using drag queens for playing the part of Jesus's disciples. Bishop Emmanuel Gobillard, spokesperson for the Pope, commented that, “The fact that our religion should be mocked is usual and we are used to blasphemy in France, but the context isn't the same.. . . I found this staging hurtful and out of place.” First Lady, Jill Biden led the U.S. delegation to the Olympics referring to the opening ceremony “spectacular."  And, Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson called the Olympics ceremonies “shocking and insulting to Christian people,” and he went on to say that “The war on our faith and traditional values knows no bounds today.” Following the lewd, homosexuality-themed Olympic Opening Ceremony, the lights went out in Paris Saturday evening.  What officials have called a “technical anomaly” cut power, and plunged the city into darkness. "To avoid crowds, visit areas that are less crowded." These comically obvious, wise words come from the Twitter account — ahem, X account — of the National Park Service, who has been hitting it out of the park lately (get it?) with its social media content and reaping viral rewards. Who is behind this material? And why has a more than hundred year old government agency chosen to let its hair down on social media?  Amory and Ben talk to the National Park Service's lone social media ranger, Matt Turner, and to Sarah Southerland from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, whose delightfully outrageous social media presence has captured the hearts and funny bones of hundreds of thousands of people.

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John discusses the discovery of the first CWD positive whitetail in Oklahoma. It did not come as much of a surprise to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, as every state surrounding Oklahoma has had a positive Chronic Wasting Disease case in recent years. So what happens now? This episode is not a scientific evaluation of CWD and its future effects of the Oklahoma deer herd. Instead, this episode is simply meant to inform listeners about what has happened in the past, what is happening in the present, and to prepare Oklahoma sportsmen and women for the future. It's not time to hit the panic button just yet! John discusses the history of CWD in Oklahoma, the recent case that has been confirmed, and a few precautions the wildlife department is putting into place. There will definitely be another episode in the near future with someone who is far more informed than John, but he felt that this news was important enough to be addressed immediately.
