“I have a purpose today, and I feel God steps in my life a lot and he was telling me to have courage and be fearless.” -Ira Today, Ben and I chatted with Ira, who's a real deal addict. He's had a ton of health issues like cancer, diabetes, and even facing death as a result of his drug and alcohol addiction. But he managed to turn his life around and now he's going on two years sober! Listen in as he talks about getting addicted, how he overcame it, and all the people who helped save his life along the way. Struggling to Find His Place Growing up in the 70s as half Irish and half Vietnamese, Ira felt like he never fit in anywhere. He went through some verbal and physical abuse at an early age.  In seventh grade at age 13, he picked up his first beer and smoked dope for the first time. By age 15, he was an IV drug user and hooked on cocaine and opiates. Then he dropped out of high school with only a 9th-grade education and eventually became a convicted felon in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida.  Years after his father passed away from cirrhosis, Ira turned to heavy drinking. “I drank alcoholically because I was searching for the high from dope and pills or whatever it may be, and I wasn't getting it.”  This led to frequent illness and hospital visits that did nothing to help his addiction... until a pivotal low point marked the real beginning of his turbulent recovery. Helping Others in Recovery After a lot of pain and uncertainty about where his life was headed, Ira has taken up a mantle that not many sober people choose. He shares his story in hopes of helping others recover from their addictions. Through his own experience of 35 years and newfound faith, he meets great people in places like hospitals, treatment centers, and psyche wards. Ira knows the importance of having a supportive person or group on the road to sobriety. Tune in as Emmet shares his personal experiences as a speaker, and how he moved to London from a small town in Ireland. He learned that people need to become aware of the negative thoughts that cross their minds, and rewrite them to replace them with a more positive syntax.A Transformative Mindset allows you to be more adaptive to the challenges you face. They it isn't a process of change, but more of a permanent state. To always be aware of what holds you down means that you'll be able to constantly change yourself to get rid of those hurdles. When you finally remove all of the "Mental Gremlins" trying to poison your mind, you'll find that transforming into the person you want to be becomes much easier.Emmet Naughton is an entrepreneur, author, investment professional and motivatonal speaker who zeroes in on personal development. It all started when Emmet picked up a book on mindset called "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Vincent Norman Peale, and eventually had him completely HOOKED on working on his own growth to break free from his mental barriers and finally reach his full potential.Currently the co-founder of Positive Progression, it's his passion to help others reach their full potential by guiding them and giving them key insights on how they can break through and shift towards a more successful mindset. Featured on The Telegraph and Medium, Positive Progression offers 1-on-1 coaching on both mindset and communication, equipping you with what you need to become the best version of yourself.Enjoy! ********Topics discussed on the show:********introductionEmmet's StoryTransformative MindsetVarious ChallengesHow Helpful Belief IsMaking Vision BoardsMental GremlinsBeing Aware of Your ThoughtsReinstall Different ThinkingFocus on the RIGHT ThingsGetting To The RootThe CandleBeing Aware of Your FeelingsTranscendental MeditationConnecting To YourselfCreating Your Own TimeEmmet's Personal RoutineThe Power of WordsWrapping Up********Where to find Emmet********Positiveprogression.uk - Emmet's websitehttps://www.instagram.com/_positiveprogression - Emmet's Instagram********Links Mentioned********Terrance X Johnson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/terrance-johnson-271812149/Vincent Norman Peale - The Power of Positive Thinking: https://www.amazon.com/Power-Positive-Thinking-Norman-Vincent/dp/0743234804The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: https://www.amazon.com/Habits-Highly-Effective-People-Powerful/dp/0743269519Green Lights - Matthew McConaughey: greenlights.comPrinciples - Ray Dalio: https://www.amazon.com/Principles-Life-Work-Ray-Dalio/dp/1501124021Dr Joe Dispenza: https://drjoedispenza.com/Rob Dyle's Podcast Episodes: https://www.listennotes.com/top-episodes/rob-doyle/

Cravings can be so frustrating! Anyone who has ever tried to stop eating chocolate, chips, cheese, or junk food will tell you that these foods are almost impossible to give up!   Dr. Mickey Witte, a neuroscientist specializing in food addiction, joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to explain the war between your brain and your belly. She details how the hedonic pleasure centers of your brain react the same way to high-fat food as to drugs or even sex.   The brain likes those foods, loves them, and wants more of them! And fast-food restaurants and major food companies know this. Their business model is built entirely on calculating the perfect blend of fat, salt, and sugar in all of their recipes to get you hooked. Which is why losing weight can be so hard!   This is part two of a special two-part conversation with Dr. Witte.   — — — Part 1: Why We're Overweight https://youtu.be/aWnPPWhsw94 — — — Dr. Mickey Witte Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/MickeyEatsPlants Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/DrMickeyWit Website: https://www.mickeyeatsplants.com — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: http://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — 21-Day Vegan Kickstart App iOS: https://bit.ly/VegKStrt-iOS Android: https://bit.ly/VegKStrtAndrd Web: https://www.pcrm.org/kickstart — — — Barnard Medical Center Appointments https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed 202-527-7500 — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. In today's episode of Hooked on Sports: The 2021 World Series between the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves is nearing it's climax. With the Braves holding a three games to two advantage going into Game 6 in Houston on Tuesday, can the Braves hang on to win their first world championship in 26 years, or can the Astros overcome a 3-1 series deficit and win? (02:07) John recaps the shocking results from yesterday's action around the NFL, including the four backup quarterbacks that won games, with Mike White & the New York Jets taking down the Bengals, Geno Smith and the Seahawks bouncing back to beat the Jaguars, Trevor Simeian coming in relief of Jameis Winston (who tore his ACL) to beat the defending champion Buccaneers, and Cooper Rush filling in for Dak Prescott to lead to the Dallas Cowboys to a last minute victory over the Vikings in primetime (12:36), the breaking news that broke during recording that the Los Angeles Rams acquired superstar defensive lineman Von Miller from the Denver Broncos (20:51), who John would like to see get moved ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline (23:00), and the injury to Derrick Henry (26:30). Then, John discusses how the College Football Playoff race is down to 12 teams and all the potential scenarios for the committee to come up with the four teams (29:55), why the Chicago Blackhawks sexual abuse scandal is such a painful moment for the NHL (39:55), why the Knicks and Bulls both starting 5-1 is significant and a great thing for the NBA (44:48), and why he loves the Padres hiring Bob Melvin to be the team's manager and not the Cardinals hiring Oliver Marmol (48:11).

Recently Thrice's Dustin Kensrue (vocals/guitar) and Teppei Teranishi (guitar) participated in https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/hooked/thrice (PG's Hooked). (The video https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/hooked/ (series) features musicians talking about a moment, riff, or song that turned their world upside down and sideswiped them into playing.) Kensrue raved about the Pixies' dissonant melodies, while Teranishi highlighted Metallica's heavy impact. And at the conclusion of the video, they both admit the band has a lot of "Pixies" parts and "Metallica" moments throughout its catalog. Over the course of 11 studio albums—with the help of brothers Eddie (bass) and Riley (drums) Breckenridge—Thrice has explored odd-timing metal (Identity Crisis and The Illusion of Safety), thrashy screamo (The Artist in the Ambulance), maturing post-hardcore (Vheissu and Palms), all-encompassing prog-rock with ethereal escapes and mammoth, surly riffs (The Alchemy Index: Vols. I-IV), and an amalgamation of it all (To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere and Horizons/East). And even after all those years, all those albums, and all their discovered sounds, the Pixies and Metallica continue to be musical planets they orbit while exploring the outer realms of the sonic solar system. Prior to headlining Nashville's Mercy Lounge in support of the just-released Horizons/East, Kensrue and Teranishi spoke with PG's Perry Bean about the changes (and reductions) in their symbiotic setups. Kensrue explains why he's shifted his live tone (and Horizons/East recordings) to be fully dependent on the Line 6 Helix, and how that impacted the design of his signature Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay. Teranishi chronicles how the pandemic-created time void sent him down the lutherie rabbit hole and resulted in a familiar-looking-but-original build. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation

You're writing a book. And that book has to start somewhere. Where it starts? That's called the opening scene and this little baby has a lot of work that it has to do. It's like the first moments of a blind date, but instead of a blind date between two people, it's a blind date between the book and the reader. Will they like each other? Will they want to spend time together? Are they meant for each other? Only … it's really will the reader like the book. Nobody cares if the book likes the reader. The reader has all the power. According to Les Edgerton, who wrote the craft book, HOOKED, that opener has ten important components to grab that reader's attention and make them want to chill on the couch with your book. Those are: The Inciting Incident – Les believes that this needs to happen in the first scene. Other people do not agree with this. The Story-Worthy Problem – That incident makes a problem that is going to propel the plot of the whole damn book. The Initial Shallow Problem – This problem happens because of the inciting incident and makes the protagonist do something (take action), but it's not the real problem of the story. The Set-Up – Kind of makes the reader know what's going to happen next and also helps the reader know what the heck is going on. Backstory – You do not want a lot of this, which is the events that have happened before the story starts. Opening Lines – Because duh. The story has to start, but you want them to be snazzy and make an impression. Language – Because again, duh. Books are made of words. The words you choose and how you group them together make an impression. Setting – Because the story has to take place somewhere. Let the reader have a sense of the physical space, the time, the culture. Foreshadowing – This is the magic, my friends, because this is part of the hook that keeps the reader with you—the knowledge and hint that something is coming up next. And that opening scene? It has goals: You have to hook the reader. You have to have a story-worthy problem. You have to let the reader know what kind of story this is.And tease that ending out a tiny bit. WRITING TIP OF THE POD That beginning of your story is super important. Spend some time on it. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Set the scene. Establish your goals. Show them your character and do it right away. “Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” This is one of our favorite quotes from Michael Pollan. Can it really be that simple? Today's guest, Olympian Julia Murray believes that it can be with her new app, 80/20 Plants.   80/20 Plants is the leading plant-based coaching service that moves people and the planet to a better future. The 80/20 Plants App delivers approachable and fun one-on-one coaching, along with community and practical education, that is accessible to anyone motivated to thrive on plants.   With the typical Western diet consisting mostly of processed foods, meat, and dairy, (which contribute to serious health issues including cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes) there is no better time than now to start eating more plant-based food.   By incorporating most plants into your diet, you get an instant nutrition boost of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. A plant-based diet can also aid with weight loss, prevent and reverse chronic disease, and lower mortality rates. The planet will also thank you: shifting away from a meat-heavy diet helps to combat climate change and pollution!   That's why I had such a great time with today's guest! Julia is the co-founder, spokesperson, and coach of ‘80/20 Plants' the plant-based transition app, and she's the vegan blogger, and plant-based chef behind Hooked on Plants. She's also been named one of Canada's top vegan athletes by Impact Magazine and is certified as a Main Street Vegan lifestyle coach.   Listen Now!   Thank you to our sponsors!   Sovereignty  Sovereignty creates amazing supplements that will help take your workout to the next level by giving you that extra boost to get you through your workout and provide you the motivation you need to keep moving throughout the day.
