What if the biggest barrier between you and your potential isn't talent - but a belief you've never questioned?Nir Eyal is a behavioral design expert and the bestselling author of Hooked, Indistractable, and his newest book, Beyond Belief. In this conversation with Dr. Michael Gervais, he explores a deceptively powerful idea: that beliefs operate like the hidden software of the mind, shaping what we notice, what we feel, what we attempt, and what we assume is possible. At the center of the conversation is a problem most of us know very intimately: If we already know what to do, why don't we do it? Nir argues that motivation is not simply about knowing the right behavior or wanting the right outcome. Holding it all together is belief, the often invisible layer that determines whether we think change is possible, whether our effort is worth it, and whether we believe we are capable of following through.Nir breaks down the difference between facts, faith, and beliefs, and offers a compelling reframing: beliefs are not truths, they are tools. From there, he explores the difference between limiting beliefs and liberating beliefs, why the mind defaults toward safety and passivity, and how small acts of agency can begin to reshape what we think is available to us.Mike and Nir also dig into the relationship between pain and suffering, learned helplessness and hope, and the role interpretation plays in human performance. Along the way, they unpack how beliefs shape our attention, anticipation, and agency, and why changing a belief is often less about finding “the truth” and more about testing perspectives that better serve the life we want to live. This is a conversation about motivation, resilience, and the invisible architecture of our inner life. If you've ever felt stuck, frustrated that insight alone isn't producing change, or curious about the mental filters shaping your performance, this one is for you. __________________________________Links & ResourcesSubscribe to our Youtube Channel for more conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and wellbeing: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors! You've read the books. You know what to do. So why aren't you doing it? That's the question my guest couldn't shake — and it sent him on a six-year journey that became his most important work yet. Nir Eyal is the author of the million-copy selling books Hooked and Indistractable, and his brand new book is called Beyond Belief. Nir argues that motivation isn't a straight line between knowing and doing — it's a triangle, and most of us are missing the third side entirely. That missing piece is belief. Today we talk about why successful people are actually just better losers, how your beliefs filter the reality you're able to see, and the simple but powerful practice that can make you up to 240 times more persistent. If you've ever felt stuck between knowing better and doing better, this conversation is for you. The real reason your motivation dies before you reach your goal — and it has nothing to do with discipline or willpower Why two people can look at the exact same situation and see completely different realities How to use belief as a tool — not a truth — to get unstuck and start moving The science-backed practice that even non-religious people can use to dramatically increase their pain tolerance and persistence Why stress and productivity are not the same thing (and the limiting belief that's quietly burning you out) How to stop being a prisoner of your own diagnosis, your own story, and your own excuses

In this episode of FOMO Sapiens, Patrick welcomes back Nir Eyal, bestselling author of Hooked and Indistractable, to discuss his newest book, Beyond Belief. The conversation starts with a paradox we all recognize: we know exactly what to do, yet we don't do it. Nir explains why the missing piece isn't discipline or motivation, but belief. Drawing on neuroscience, psychology, and personal experience, he introduces a powerful framework showing how belief shapes attention, anticipation, and agency, and how those forces quietly determine what we see, feel, and do. Patrick and Nir explore limiting beliefs, extremist certainty, and why nuance is a competitive advantage in a polarized world. They also examine how beliefs function not as truths, but as tools—and how choosing better tools can unlock better decisions, healthier relationships, and more focused lives. This episode is a practical and philosophical guide to reclaiming agency in an age of distraction, outrage, and endless information. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nir Eyal: Beyond Belief Nir Eyal writes, consults, and teaches about the intersection of psychology, technology, and business. He is the author of two bestselling books, Hooked and Indistractable, selling more than a million copies and translated in over 30 languages. He is the author of the new book, Beyond Belief: The Science-Backed Way to Stop Limiting Yourself and Achieve Breakthrough Results (Amazon, Bookshop)*. Most of us recognize that a huge part of what motivates us – or not – is our own thinking. In this conversation, Nir and I explore where our beliefs get in the way and how we can align them just a bit to help us move forward. Key Points A sentence starting with “I am…” can be among the most dangerous in any language. Often, our beliefs limit us. Belief is the foundation of the motivation triangle that includes benefit and behavior. Yet, we often overlook beliefs. Curt Richter's study of rats in the 1950s shows how an animal's belief system can massively influence its behavior. The real question isn't “Is this belief true?” but rather, “Does this belief serve me?” You can choose beliefs based on usefulness, not certainty. Difficulty may mean we are not cut out for something, but it might also be evidence of growth. Too often, we quit too soon. Progress comes from consistent action, not perfect plans. Why beliefs can either cap our potential or push us toward possibility. What you believe about yourself could be holding you back. Fortunately, Nir Eyal says beliefs aren't truths — and you can choose new ones.Eyal is a former lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford d.school, a celebrated author, and a renowned expert on human behavior and potential. His latest book, Beyond Belief, reveals how limiting beliefs — like “I'm a bad communicator” — quietly shape what we see, feel, and do. “A belief doesn't have to be true” to limit our potential, he says. But the same holds in reverse: a belief doesn't have to be true to expand who and what we can become. “Beliefs are tools, not truths. It just has to be useful.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Eyal and host Matt Abrahams explore how to identify the beliefs that hold us back — and how to replace them with ones that propel us forward. From keeping a belief journal to practicing perspective-shifting “turnarounds,” Eyal offers practical tips for rewriting the stories we tell ourselves and becoming the people we want to be.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Nir EyalNir's Book: Beyond Belief104. Show Notes: Nir Eyal, author of Hooked and Indistractable, talks about his new book Beyond Belief. Nir explains the inspiration for writing the book and the book's purpose: to help people process information and put it into practice. Nir shares his motivation for writing the book, focusing on the psychology of motivation and the importance of perseverance and adaptability. He talks about the missing component in moving from belief to action, and discusses the concept of motivation as a triangle, emphasizing the role of belief in sustaining motivation. Beliefs Affecting Perception The conversation turns to stories from the book about beliefs affecting perception, such as the Toyota vs. GM prism and the expensive vs. cheap glass of wine experiments that proved the participants actually believed to be truths based on the information received over the facts. Nir explains how beliefs can literally change what we see, citing examples like people on diets seeing food as larger and people with a fear of heights perceiving distances as further. He discusses how brands and luxury goods affect perception. Nir emphasizes that our beliefs shape what we see, feel, and do, and that understanding this can help us improve our lives. Limiting vs Liberating Beliefs When asked how to identify and change limiting beliefs, Nir explains that beliefs are tools, not truths, and that understanding this can help us improve our lives. Applying this approach to relationships to illustrate how it works, he shares a personal story about a conflict with his mother and how he used the Work of Byron Katie to question his beliefs. Nir outlines the four questions from "The Work" that help identify and change limiting beliefs: Is it true? Is it absolutely true? Who am I when I hold this belief? Who would I be without this belief? Magical Thinking vs Mental Contrasting Nir talks about how to apply the belief inventory to other areas of life, such as business and company culture. He explains that beliefs are the operating system of our minds and that understanding this can help us improve our relationships and business practices. He discusses the concept of mental contrasting, which involves visualizing both the desired outcome and the obstacles to achieving it. Nir emphasizes that magical thinking, such as positive thinking without action, can be harmful and that mental contrasting is a more effective approach. Prayer for the Unfaithful On the chapter about prayer in the book, Nir explains that prayer has benefits even without faith, citing a study where people who prayed, even without faith, had better pain tolerance. He shares his experience of interviewing five faith leaders to learn how to pray when uncertain about God. Nir discusses the benefits of prayer, such as longer life, more life satisfaction, and less depression, and how he has incorporated prayer into his life. Setting Failure Goals When questioned about the concept of failure goals, Nir explains that failure goals involve setting goals for how many times you try, rather than focusing solely on success. He discusses the importance of celebrating the process and the journey, rather than just the outcome. Discipline in Practice Nir shares that he has incorporated prayer and improved his relationships through new practices. "Motivation is a triangle. It requires: Behavior: What am I going to do? Benefit: Why am I going to do it? Belief. If you don't have those three areas of your life in concert, all the advice in the world is going to go in one ear and out the other. Beliefs are tools, not truths. The majority of our problems today—cultural, geopolitical, personal—come from the fact that we think our faith is fact, and we confuse facts for what are beliefs. Everything worth having in life is on the other side of discomfort. So if you can learn to manage discomfort through the power of belief, what couldn't you accomplish? Everything." - Nir EyalFresh out of the studio, Nir Eyal, best-selling author of "Hooked," "Indistractable," and the forthcoming "Beyond Belief," joined us in a conversation to explore how deeply held beliefs quietly shape our attention, decisions, and success. Nir shared his personal origin story of childhood obesity that revealed how we escape uncomfortable feelings through habitual behaviors, and progressed through the Hook Model that democratized Silicon Valley's habit-formation secrets for building products like Duolingo and Fitbod. He unpacks the critical insight that the opposite of distraction isn't focus—it's traction—and introduces the Motivation Triangle framework explaining why knowing what to do isn't enough without belief. Throughout the conversation, Nir demonstrates how 90% of our distractions stem from internal triggers rather than technology itself, and challenges the moral panic around AI by drawing parallels to historical fears from the written word to social media. Last but not least, he argues that beliefs are tools, not truths, revealing how our hidden convictions fundamentally alter what we see, feel, and do—and provides a science-backed path for transforming limiting beliefs into liberating ones that unlock previously impossible performance.Episode Highlights[00:00] Quote of the Day by Nir Eyal[01:02] Introduction: Nir Eyal[04:45] Hook model democratizes habit-forming product secrets[06:42] Startups sell painkillers not vitamins[08:59] Traction versus distraction defines intentional living[10:24] Distraction is behavior not medical addiction[11:28] AI triggers predictable moral panic cycle[14:21] First generation without mass starvation faces excess[16:58] Hook model: trigger action reward investment[23:26] Persuasion helps people achieve their goals[29:39] Internal triggers cause ninety percent of distractions[32:36] Indistractable readers didn't implement the steps[34:46] Motivation triangle requires behavior benefit belief[36:19] Steve Jobs willed reality through liberating beliefs[43:43] Facts beliefs faith require intellectual humility[45:41] Beliefs are tools not truths[48:32] Beliefs reshape attention anticipation agency[51:30] ClosingProfile: Nir Eyal, author of "Beyond Belief", "Indistractable" and "Hooked"Main Site: https://www.nirandfar.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nireyal/Podcast Information: Bernard Leong hosts and produces the show. What if the reason you don't give feedback, follow through, or change your habits… isn't willpower? What if it's a belief? In this episode of The Radical Candor Podcast, Kim Scott talks with Nir Eyal — author of Hooked, Indistractable, and his new book Beyond Belief — about the hidden force behind motivation: the stories we tell ourselves. They explore: Why AI can't replace human relationships — but can help us practice hard conversations The limiting belief that keeps people silent at work Why knowing what to do isn't enough How pain (not pleasure) drives behavior The difference between addiction and habit Why “time management is pain management.” How to reinterpret anxiety as readiness And why beliefs are tools — not truths If you've ever struggled to speak up, follow through, or break a bad habit — this conversation will help you see what's really getting in the way.Chapters (00:00) Introduction Kim welcomes Nir Eyal and introduces AI portraits and scaling human insight. In this suspenseful thriller by Caitlin Rother, a journalist and cop fight a sexual attraction as they join forces to expose a layered scheme of dark and dangerous secrets. When investigative reporter Katrina Chopin and surfing homicide detective Ken Goode lock eyes, there's an immediate attraction. Sparks fly as they bond over cocktails, sharing their common experiences of being orphans and losing loved ones to suicide. But the next time they meet, it's from opposing sides of a high-profile case. Two biotech execs, whose company is developing a groundbreaking sexual enhancement drug, turn up dead in the wealthy seaside enclave of La Jolla Farms, where Goode can readily see that the forensic evidence doesn't add up. As they work their own angles, sometimes together and sometimes at odds, their growing attraction threatens to cost them their jobs—and their lives. As Katrina and Goode pursue answers behind these mysterious events, a secret stalker taunts Katrina with details of her tragic past, which takes her to the brink of death. But once the duo rips the mask away from this beautiful paradise, the corrupt underbelly behind all that glitters is revealed. James chats with the author. Book is out now! Amazon.com
Nir Eyal spent six years researching why brilliant, talented people consistently fall short of their potential, and what he found will surprise you: it's not a lack of knowledge, resources, or intelligence holding most people back. It's the invisible belief system running silently in the background, shaping every decision you make without your awareness. Most of us are walking around with beliefs forged in survival mode, and we're using them long after they've stopped serving us. The good news is that beliefs, unlike facts, are tools you can examine, update, and swap out. In this conversation, Nir walks you through the motivation triangle that explains why willpower and information alone never work, and the exact four-step turnaround process that rewrites the beliefs costing you peace, progress, and connection. Whether you're struggling with a goal that keeps stalling, a relationship that stays stuck, or a quiet voice telling you that you're not enough, this episode gives you a practical way out. In this episode, Jess sits down with bestselling author Nir Eyal to unpack his newest book, Beyond Belief — and the conversation goes far deeper than productivity hacks or surface-level motivation advice. Nir, the author of Hooked and Indistractable, explains why knowing what to do isn't the problem. We already have more information than ever. The real challenge is understanding why we don't do what we know we should. He breaks down the hidden power of belief — how limiting beliefs quietly sabotage performance, relationships, and even health — and how shifting perspective can unlock persistence, clarity, and focus. What makes this conversation powerful is that it's not theoretical. Jess steps into the hot seat and works through his own internal tension around time, ambition, and self-expectation. It turns into a candid, almost therapeutic exploration of identity, pressure, and what it really means to live up to your potential. If you've ever felt stuck despite knowing exactly what to do next, this one will hit home. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
