The Volleycast is back for a second season! In this episode Dave and I talk the inaugural season of the Athletes Unlimited pro league, my experience coaching, and his experience following the league.
Today's podcast comes from a reader question: "I am a juniors volleyball player in the Midwest, and I'm super interested in going into coaching. I have a few questions for you: In your opinion, What can I be doing the next year before college in order to be learning how to be the best coach I can be in the future? Where can I learn about volleyball coaching ideas and how the best do it? Are there any books you would recommend to an aspiring volleyball coach?"
Newly engaged Pepperdine Men's Volleyball Head Coach joins me to talk about changes in the NCAA and club volleyball landscape.
In this episode, I answer a listener question about how to measure out-of-system attacking and how to form an out-of-system attacking philosophy. I back up to 2008 to talk about how influential that Olympic Games was on American volleyball, how some different styles of attacking have emerged, and how to measure out-of-system attacking. Check out scoutvb.com for more information on Coaching Workshops and follow me on Twitter or Instagram @volleycast.
In this episode I answer a reader question about what I like to look at when I'm coaching within a match. For more information on Coaches Workshops, check out scoutvb.com.
A listener asks, "You mentioned this briefly on the pod, but I was wondering what you're looking for these days when you're going through film. Do you go through it once and see whatever catches your eye? Go through person-by-person until you get through all 12 players on the court? What do you do when you're watching video?" I answer this question in this episode and outline my strategy to watching and studying video. Hope you enjoy! Follow me on Twitter or Instagram @volleycast for more!
In Episode 31, I shared 5 tools every assistant coach should have in their coaching toolbox. In a recent blog post: http://www.scoutvb.com/blog-1/2020/6/24/assistant-coaches-toolbox-part-2 I expand on the value of learning DataVolley, and studying video in general.
In this session, I answer a follow-up question from a participant in this past Saturday's Coaches Workshop. Luka Slabe was the guest clinician for this. A coach asked: "I would be curious to hear your opinions on what you think the most important things would be for a young assistant coach to have in their toolbox or qualities that they should have. I'm getting ready to transition from my graduate assistant role into (hopefully) a full time assistant coach role after the 2020 season and looking for almost some direction." To participate in one of my Coaches Workshops, check out scoutvb.com
