A stroke happens when there is a sudden blockage of blood flow to the brain or bleeding in the brain, which can result in symptoms such as numbness or weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, or dizziness. The type of symptoms one might experience depends largely on the type of stroke, and the area of the brain affected. But one thing is clear – despite the many advances in stroke care over the past 30 years, it's women who often suffer the most. In today's episode, we discuss why women are more susceptible to stroke, what the unique risk factors are, and what women need more of to help them recover, not only from the medical condition, but the impacts to their careers, their mental health and their families. Featuring: Dr. Aleksandra Pikula, MD, PhD, is a neurologist and clinician-investigator at UHN's Krembil Brain Institute and the newly appointed Jay and Sari Sonshine Chair in Stroke Prevention and Cerebrovascular Brain Health at UHN. Dr. Lindsay leads strategic directions for health systems design and change for people with stroke and heart conditions across Canada and internationally. Her career was focused largely on Shakespeare and Musical Theatre until her life took an unexpected turn when she suffered a life-altering brain hemorrhage and stroke at the age of 30. Did you ever think we would go backwards in gender parity within government cabinets around the world? Neither did we. It's happening in countries like Hungary, where they now have an all-male cabinet. On a more positive note, the Matildas v Canada Women's World Cup match became Channel 7's most watched program of the year. We think Brazilian soccer icon Marta's brilliant press conference speech sums up the rise in women's football quite nicely: “20 years ago, in 2003, nobody knew Marta – it was my first World Cup. Twenty years later we have become the reference for women all over the world.” We take a look at all this, plus the cost of living and how it's affecting women more acutely in climate disaster-affected areas, as well as Senator David Pocock's new ‘duty of care' climate bill. Stories discussed this week include:The countries that still have all-male cabinetsWomen more likely to be multiple job holders than menThe ‘duty of care' bill is a chance for the government to show it cares about young people‘Incredibly hard': Climate disasters amid a cost-of-living crisis impacting women most acutely‘I didn't have a female idol, you guys didn't show female games': Marta on the persistence from players that progressed women's footballMatildas win was Seven's most watched program of the yearThe Crux is produced by Agenda Media, the 100% women founded and owned media business, publishing the daily news publication Women's Agenda. Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by legends Kieran and Nicole Crowley for #RugbyHive Episode 33. Kieran played in the backline for the All Blacks from 1983-1991 (19 Caps) winning the 1987 Rugby World Cup on home soil. He was also part of the New Zealand team that won the Bledisloe Cup in 1985, 1990 and 1991. Kieran played 199 times for club team Taranaki, scoring 1,723 points, and later coached Taranaki from 1998-2007. Kieran spent eight years coaching the Canadian Men's 15s team, taking them to the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups. He then spent five seasons with Benetton in Italy, which is when this interview was recorded during 2020. Since we spoke, Kieran was named Coach of the Year while at Benetton Rugby guiding them to a Pro 14 Rainbow Cup Championship (2021), before being selected as the Head Coach of Italy in May of 2021. He led Italy to a 22-21 win over Wales in the 2021 Six Nations, and then recorded one of the biggest upsets to date for the Azzurri by defeating Australia 28-27 in the Autumn tours of 2022. Kieran's daughter, Nicole, also grew up New Zealand until she moved to Canada with her family at 12 years of age. She played for Team BC in 7s and 15s, captaining them to a National Championship. At just 18 years old while completing an internship at Rugby Canada, Nicole got the opportunity to become Manager of the Canada Women's 15s team. From there she worked on contract with Rugby Canada while finishing her Business degree at the University of Victoria, where she was also a member of the UVic Vikes rugby team. Nicole managed the Women's 15s side through their 2017 World Cup campaign as well as the Women's 7s team to the Pan American Games, HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and Olympic Qualification. Since our interview, Nicole moved North with her partner (who works in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police), living in the remote sub-Arctic in the Northwest Territories, in a town of only 450 people and with no roads connecting it to other towns. Nicole is the Director of Recreation for the municipality where she is highly involved with Special Olympics NT and Sport North, where she works to help disadvantaged and remote kids from communities like hers, access sporting opportunities. In this episode we talk about Kieran and Nicole's rugby backgrounds, their accomplishments in the sport, and how they both used rugby as a vehicle to live and work in different countries and experience new cultures. Welcome to the Imperfect Progress Podcast! I'm excited to share this episode focused around girls in sport, women in coaching and community involvement with author, athlete and entrepreneur Molly Hurford. If you love cycling and you love reading, you and Molly Hurford (@mollyjhurford) will have a few things in common. Let's add writing, travel and small dogs to that list too! Molly Hurford is passionate about getting girls on bikes and reading books, so much so that she's writing books about the topic and reading them online during the pandemic to keep the momentum of her mission alive. This conversation takes the listener down many interesting roads, starting with Molly's own path as a young female and how sport and reading did or didn't play into her story. This is a great story with a twist I didn't expect. It gave me new perspective on her books as well. We touch on many other interesting and important topics including: The Rally Report:: Girls participation in sport in Canada Women in coaching positions – stats and why this matters Accessibility to sport – challenges & ideas Creating community Nourishing a growth mindset in young girls and celebrating effort and hard work. I think this topic is incredibly important. Globally kids are not moving enough. The arrival of the current pandemic is increasing screen time, possibly worsening the lack of physical activity. It's so important that we play our part as far as reaching and then including children who may not be exposed to sport through family and now through school. An active lifestyle has far reaching positive outcomes both mentally and physically. Instilling active habits in youth can pay health dividends for years to come.
