In this episode of The Mental Performance Mastery Podcast Reflect & Refocus, Brian discusses what Mental Performance Coaches can do to help their athletes return to play from injury. In this episode Brian shares 10 ways you can help your athletes during a return to play from injury. 1. Goal Setting for Rehab Progress: Encourage them to set specific, measurable, and realistic goals related to their rehab progress, focusing on what they can control. This keeps them motivated and provides structure. 2. Visualization and Imagery: Teach the athlete to use mental imagery to “rehearse” their sport. Visualizing movements, techniques, and successful performances can help maintain muscle memory and increase mental toughness. 3. Mindfulness and Meditation: Introduce mindfulness techniques to help them stay present and manage the emotional challenges of being injured. It can improve emotional regulation, reduce stress, and improve focus during recovery. 4. Developing Self-Awareness: Use journaling or reflective practices to increase their awareness of their mental and emotional states. This can help them understand their mental habits and areas for growth. 5. Positive Self-Talk: Help the athlete develop a positive internal dialogue, even during challenging times. This reinforces resilience and combats negative thoughts associated with injury. 6. Cognitive Restructuring: Teach them how to reframe negative or unproductive thoughts (e.g., “I'm missing out” to “I'm using this time to build mental strength”). This fosters a growth mindset. 7. Confidence Building: Work on confidence by reviewing past successes, identifying strengths, and setting small, achievable mental goals. This helps them regain belief in their abilities during recovery. 8. Resilience Training: Encourage mental toughness training by discussing setbacks as opportunities for growth. Use adversity stories or case studies from other athletes who've overcome injury. 9. Maintaining Team Connection: Encourage them to stay involved with the team, whether by attending practices, engaging with teammates, or taking on a mentorship role. This keeps them connected and mentally engaged. 10. Focus on Skill Development: Work on building mental skills such as focus, concentration, and emotional regulation. Use this time to train these areas, as they will be useful when they return to competition. Each strategy helps the athlete stay mentally sharp while navigating the psychological challenges of injury recovery. Brian Cain, MPM, the World's leader in Mental Performance Coaching brings you practical tips you can use as a mental performance coach to help your athletes close the gap from where they are to where they want to be and to maximize their potential. Gynecological surgeries are extremely common. More 600,000 women get a hysterectomy each year in the US alone, and more than one-third of women will have had one by age 60. And often a woman is told that she's “good to go” after a few weeks, when in reality, when it comes to her sport, she's anything but, and she can struggle for months–or longer–because no one properly helped her rehab to return to powerlifting, doing double-unders, running 13 miles, or many of the activities we take for granted as part of regular life. That's where this week's guest, Dr. Jocelyn Wallace comes in. Using her professional as well as personal experience, Jocelyn devotes her practice to helping women rebuild strength after surgery and bridge the gap back to their active and athletic lives without prolapse, pain, or peeing themselves. We talk all about her work there as well as dealing with common pelvic health concerns, especially pain and incontinence.Jocelyn Wallace, PT, DPT, CF-L2 is a pelvic health physical therapist who helps women get back to the things they love after gynecological surgeries, specializing in hysterectomy, myomectomy, and excision surgery recovery. She has firsthand experience navigating recovery as an athlete, having her first open myomectomy a few weeks after her first powerlifting meet. After seeing how little support is given to women after major abdominal surgery, she vowed to fill that gap. Since then, she has had 2 more abdominal surgeries, with 54 fibroids removed, and is a Level 2 CrossFit Trainer, combining the skillsets of physio + fitness to help women fully return to their active lives. In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob sits down with Physiotherapist and Head of the Assessment Lab at Aspetar, Roula Kotsifaki to delve into the critical role of technology and specific testing protocols in determining an athlete's readiness to return to play after an ACL injury. Roula emphasizes the importance of measuring asymmetries, movement quality, and strength to prevent future injuries. Key highlights include the construction of sensitive testing protocols to measure key competencies. Roula discusses the significance of hop tests and jump tests in identifying asymmetries and the role of landing variability in ACL rehabilitation. She highlights the use of 3D force plates and cameras to accurately assess power metrics and joint contributions during vertical and horizontal jumps, which are crucial for evaluating an athlete's readiness. Roula also details which metrics we should trust and which we shouldn't, and that includes her questioning the use of rate of force development related metrics. Furthermore, Roula stresses that successful return to play after ACL surgery requires comprehensive rehabilitation and shouldn't be determined by a timeline. Just because you are at 9-months post surgery, it doesn't mean that you're ready. Being "ready" should be based on achieving specific competencies. Listeners can gain insights into the best practices for ACL rehabilitation, the use of technology in assessing readiness, and the critical metrics for ensuring a safe and effective return to play. Key points: Importance of technology in ACL rehabilitation. Measure asymmetries to prevent future injuries. Choosing sensitive testing protocols. Hop tests options. 3D force plates assess joint contributions. Problems with rate of force development metrics. Comprehensive rehab before returning to sport. Why the minimum 9 month timeframe for ACL recovery

Concussion Guidelines for Return-to-Play with Dr. Mike Olson, Part 2Concussion management and post-concussion care is multifaceted and highly individualized. One person may have a fairly easy recovery and little long-term effects from a head injury whereas another person with an almost identical brain trauma can be permanently disabled. The scientific community has made incredible advances in the last decade in our understanding of the short and long term effects of concussion, but there are still a number of mysteries when it comes to the physiological, neurological, mental and emotional inner workings of the human brain. But one thing is for certain -- athletic organizations at ALL levels have finally become acutely aware of the importance of protecting the brain. In part 1 of this fascinating 2 part training, you'll learn from Dr. Mike Olson, a nationally and internationally certified chiropractic sports physician that heads up the concussion management program at BigFork Valley Hospital in Minnesota. He will walk us through the internationally recognized return-to-sport guidelines and provide us with a step-by-step approach to managing concussion throughout every phase of the healing process.Guest Instructor: Dr. Olson is the current Allied Health Services Manager at Bigfork Valley Hospital, overseeing the daily operations of the Chiropractic Department, Rehabilitation Department and the onsite fitness center. Acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation is a common clinical problem among young and athletic populations. Surgical management is widely used for high-grade dislocations (Rockwood III-VI) and in high-demand athletes at high risk of recurrence. In conclusion, the overall rate of RTP was reportedly high after surgical treatment for AC joint dislocation, with the majority of patients returning to their preinjury levels of sport. There is a lack of consensus in the literature for what constitutes a safe RTP, with further focus on this topic required in future studies. Click here to read the article.

Wrestling is a physically demanding sport with young athletes prone to traumatic shoulder instability and a paucity of data evaluating the results of shoulder instability surgery (SIS). In conclusion, competitive wrestlers with multiple dislocations before initial clinical evaluation were 3.8 times more likely to experience postoperative recurrent instability. Patients should be counseled that despite SIS, only 57.3% returned to wrestling after surgery. Click here to read the article.

As a mom to eight kids, I needed my kids to spend time playing each day, for their sake and for mine. Little did I know the incredible benefits that that simple daily ritual would yield. Today I'm chatting with Ginny Yurich from 1000 Hours Outside about the essential need our children have for play and the countless benefits both kids and parents experience from making this a priority!
