Going undefeated at the World Teams including wins over England's Nathan Lake and a huge win over Ivan Perez to lay the groundwork for Canada's 11th place Playoff win over Spain definitely turned some heads and has some thinking the Canadian men might be back on track. Salah and I talk about the World Teams and Canada's best performance since 2009. We also look back a bit to his backstory which saw his family move from Egypt to Canada during his junior days with some encouragement from Canadian squash icon Gary Waite. Great chat with Canadian National Team # 2 Salah Eltorgman.

Celina Toth traded in her gymnastics leotard for her swimsuit at age 12, where she quickly rose up the ranks, and consistently maintained her spot on the Canadian National Team since 2008. "I was the oldest diver to ever qualify for their first Olympics in Canada at 28...a testament to my character, that I was never giving up." A 4x World Cup Finalist and CAN Fund recipient, Celina made quite the splash in the world of diving, and did so on her terms, calling the shots for herself. Her motivation? "Every time I step on that platform, I'm diving for the little girl who was told she wasn't good enough." And it hasn't been easy. Throughout her career, she's battled toxic training environments, body shaming, and abusive coaches. She shares, "I was told I was too fat, that I'd never get the scores I deserved because of the way I looked...but I made it anyway." In today's conversation, Celina opens up about her decision to retire from competitive sport and in traditional Celina-fashion, is doing it her way: "I'm leaving the sport on my terms, doing it for myself, after standing up to every ‘no' and every doubter along the way." --------------- Flame Bearers is a global storytelling platform, illuminating the unsung stories of resilient women Olympians & Paralympians that inspire people to drive change for themselves, in their connections with others, and their communities. Episode Bio Stacey Dales has an impressive sports resume, playing for the Canadian National Team in the Olympics and earning all-american status at Oklahoma. Collecting so many awards along the way, she was drafted 3rd into the WNBA, and went on to expand her repertoire as a reporter for ESPN. This all-around powerhouse is currently killing it as a reporter for NFL network. In addition to her iconic career in sports, Stacey leads with humor and kindness (I'll give her a pass for a little gametime trashtalk). Although we met as opponents, I have always looked up to Stacey. She's had her eye on the prize since I've known her and bleeds integrity into everything she does, making her an inspiration to myself and so many others. As a prominent sports reporter, this woman is paving the way for future generations of female game players and reporters, and I truly can't think of a better role model. From start to finish, Stacey's interview is full of tough-love nuggets of wisdom, honest reflections, and refreshing humility. To have the opportunity to turn the tables on an expert interviewer and put her in the hotseat was an absolute pleasure. You can follow Stacey on IG @staceydales and watch her kick butt as a reporter for the NFL Network! Here's a glance at this episode: [3:08] Lindsey introduces Stacey Dales, former Olympian and current sideline reporter for the NFL [8:04] “I believe that champions are made when nobody's watching” and “confidence comes from demonstrated ability”. Stacey shares what both of these phrases mean to her and how her mindset training as an athlete informs her career today. [10:18] Stacey describes how she's learned to embrace fear and shares her process for preparing her mind for high pressure assignments. [13:30] What's an NFL reporter's mental training routine like? From physical workouts, to memory hacks, and an intricate storytelling ritual, Stacey lets us in on her secrets to success. [16:25] We all self-sabotage. It's human nature. But once you have awareness around all the ways you self-sabotage, you reclaim your power. [18:30] You can both expect greatness and expect that failure will happen. Learning to live with human imperfections and high expectations isn't always easy, but learning to see your imperfections with grace can fuel greatness. [22:25] Stacey makes a case for simplicity; i.e. creating guidelines and routines that reflect your natural strengths and support the success you want to see in your life. [24:53] What are the most joyful moments of Stacey's job? Her vulnerable answer includes the very real responsibility of telling other people's stories and the pride she feels for being a woman in sports today. [27:40] Lindsey and Stacey chat about kindness, putting in the work, and always delivering early. And wrap up their episode by discussing Stacey's next steps in work and life and the importance of self-grace. For the last few years I've had the honor of watching Avery Howell as she took the girls basketball scene by storm as a leader for her Boise High School squad! The growth she had over the past few years was insane and to see how she handled the pressure when the spotlight was on her, was incredible. Her work ethic and her passion are large reasons why she found herself with the honors of being a McDonald's All-American in 2024 after her senior year at Boise, and why she will be playing basketball at USC next season! Avery is just one of two girls basketball players from Idaho to be named a McDonald's All-American, so you may consider taking notes on this one because she knows what it requires to get to that next level. From waking up early for YEARS and putting in the work. To the sacrifices required to be able to improve her game as a young high school student athlete. She has quite the story to share with us today! We'll hear about her preparation for the Canadian National Team as well where she competed this summer and then we'll learn more about her preparations for heading to California and why she chose USC in the first place. Also shoutout to Meta Hoops, where Avery played Club Basketball and was able to take her skills to the next level! Born and raised in Toronto but growing up in an Italian household, “futbol was life!” for Jordyn Listro. She began playing at age 5 and loved to run, be part of a team and create relationships with families who lived nearby. The experience was as much cultural as it was athletic. However, as things became more competitive, she needed to adjust her focus to prioritize both the physical aspects of success such as nutrition, sleep, extra training but also the willingness to seek out information and feedback to get better. She needed to become her own biggest fan and advocate. She attended the University of South Florida, where she was a 4-year starter, setting the USF record for career games played. She then made her professional debut in the Spanish Primera Division in 2017 before playing in the National Women's Soccer League. She has also been a member of the Canadian National Team. Despite all her efforts, she fell short of a major goal to make the Canadian Olympic team who ended up winning gold without her. Rather than give up, she used her competitive mindset to dig even deeper on the mental side of the game while also gibing attention to her life outside of soccer. Jordyn is looking forward to making an impact in the USL Super League for Tampa Bay Sun, still planning to compete for Team Canada on the biggest stage and helping grow women's professional soccer in her home country. @jordylistro
Morning Footy: A daily soccer podcast from CBS Sports Golazo Network
The MF crew discuss Jesse Marsch and his move to become coach of the Canadian National Team. It now appears that Marsch had discussions with US Soccer about becoming head coach of the USMNT and he has let everyone know that in that process he "was not treated well." With that now in the past, this new gig will give Jesse the opportunity to coach in a World Cup. Did he take this gig in spite of US Soccer? Or in spite of Gregg Berhalter and their recent tiff? This is a great opportunity for Jesse, but a risky one as well if his ultimate plans are to make his way back to Europe to coach. One thing we know for sure, the next Canada vs USA match is going to be fire. Locked On Zags - Daily Podcast On Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball
The Gonzaga Bulldogs had seven players participate in the 2023 Las Vegas NBA Summer League. Some have plenty of job security, like Andrew Nembhard with the Indiana Pacers and Chet Holmgren with the Oklahoma City Thunder, while others are fighting for a role on next year's squad, like Julian Strawther and Filip Petrusev for Denver and Philadelphia, respectively.Additionally, some didn't get a particularly fair shake at playing time, including Drew Timme who barely played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Malachi Smith with the Portland Trail Blazers, a shame considering the talent they have.Joining me today is Theo Lawson of the Spokesman-Review to break down each performance during Summer League, with discussion on why Smith left Gonzaga, why Timme picked Milwaukee, Nembhard not playing with the Canadian National Team, and Petrusev signing with Philadelphia.Link to Theo's article about Joel Ayayi: https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2023/jul/18/joel-ayayis-busy-summer-includes-summer-league-wit/Discord Server: https://discord.gg/p8R3y5JFLink to national college basketball national podcast: https://linktr.ee/LockedOncbbhttps://linktr.ee/LockedOnZagsLocked on Zags - Part of the Locked on Podcast Network.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Happy Tuesday! While co-host Steph Rotz is off galavanting with her besties in Spain, on today's episode of The GIST of It, co-host Ellen Hyslop is joined by two very special guests. First, Ellen is joined by our very own social media producer, Jessica Aldos, to recap their experience covering the F1 Canadian Grand Prix over the weekend. Then after the break, Ellen is joined by the one and only Quinn, a Canadian national soccer team star and the first out, transgender, nonbinary athlete to compete at the Olympics…and first to win the gold.
