No parent wants to have to tell their children that they have cancer, but how are you supposed to have those conversations in productive, informative, and healthy ways with your children who may differ greatly in age and development? How do we not screw them up?! Thankfully, we have Jane Irvine MA, LPC, NCC with us this week to discuss having these difficult conversations with your kiddos. Dr. Irivine walks us through how children process difficult news at different ages, how their processing can come across to adults, how to maintain your bond with your children through surgeries and physical changes, and how to engage the entire family unit to grow through change rather than be torn apart by it. Join us this week for a candid, straightforward, and surprisingly touching conversation about our favorite people (our kids) during our least favorite time (cancer). If you or a loved one is struggling with how to be the person that your cancer-y loved one needs, b-sure to check this fantastic organization out! We share what we wished others knew when we were diagnosed, how different people can fulfill different roles for us, and how badly we want to make sure those around us are caring for themselves as well. We seem to always think of the big days: surgery day, infusion day, ‘shaved our head' day. But what about the smaller, consistent, and game changing therapies to help your body heal, clear your lymph system, regain range of motion, and calm your angry damaged little nerves? This week, occupational therapist, Heather Rasmus from Empower Lymphatic Therapy joins us to discuss occupational therapy after cancer treatment. Heather explains to us why someone would want/need to go to an occupational therapist during and after cancer treatments, and what treatment looks and feels like. Heather walks us through the myriad of cancer related side effects that can be worked on and healed through consistent work with an occupational therapist and where to find an occupational therapist in your area. Our Loudest Message: Find and meet with your occupational therapist BEFORE treatments so you don't struggle as much AFTER treatments. All the breast, Megan and Sam empowerlymphatictherapy.com
