In this rich episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty explores two remarkable books that celebrate family, identity, and connection. First, he sits down with author Nancy McCabe to discuss her powerful middle-grade novel, "Fires Burning Underground" - a book that delves deep into the complex world of teenage emotions and self-discovery. McCabe's novel isn't just another coming-of-age story. It's a nuanced exploration of a young girl's journey through grief, identity, and personal growth. Drawing from her own childhood experiences, McCabe crafts a narrative that speaks directly to the often-overlooked emotional landscape of pre-teens. The book tackles serious themes like dealing with loss, questioning family beliefs, and discovering one's creative identity - all through the eyes of a relatable young protagonist. What makes this conversation truly special is the raw honesty with which McCabe discusses teenage experiences. She challenges the common misconception that kids aren't dealing with profound emotional complexities. From navigating supernatural curiosities to processing the death of a peer, the book offers a compassionate look at the inner world of young teens. Parents and educators will find particular value in McCabe's approach. She emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces for children to explore their emotions, ask questions, and embrace their creativity. The discussion highlights how literature can be a powerful tool for starting meaningful conversations about identity, grief, and personal growth. Jed and Nancy explore how middle-grade fiction can serve as a bridge between children's experiences and adult understanding. They discuss the pressures young people face, the importance of creativity, and the value of intergenerational connections. But the episode doesn't stop there. Jed also welcomes Pamela Ehrenberg to discuss her heartwarming picture book, "See You Soon, Spice Box" - a tender exploration of intergenerational connections and cultural traditions. Ehrenberg shares the beautiful story of Silas, a young boy who connects with his great-grandmother through video conferencing during the Jewish Habdalah ceremony, a ritual marking the end of the Sabbath. The book beautifully illustrates the power of family rituals and the importance of staying connected, even when physical distance separates loved ones. Ehrenberg highlights the significance of representing diverse family structures, including single-parent families, and creating stories that help children see themselves and others in literature. Her approach emphasizes the "in-between" moments of life - those transitional spaces where connection and understanding can flourish. Both conversations underscore a crucial message: children's literature is not just about entertainment, but about building empathy, understanding, and connection across generations and experiences.

After “should we have a podcast?” one of the first decisions you're going to have to make is how often you want to release and how long you're going to podcast for. You've got options, and options within options—and it's an important choice. Once you commit to a release cadence in your podcast, you should stick to it.Tom Fox, The Compliance Evangelist and creator of the Compliance Podcast Network, says, “Your podcast is a promise to your audience,” and he's absolutely right. If you commit to and communicate that you're going to start a weekly podcast, you should deliver a weekly podcast. It's not just because it's important to do what you say you're going to do—inconsistent releases or a series of stops and starts just aren't a great look for most brands.Consistency is professional, and it should be table stakes, which sometimes means not biting off more than you can chew when it comes to your podcast. That is it's own challenge, because the reality is that more frequent releases means more and faster progress towards key business goals. So you've got to find the balance that works best for you, your team, and your business goals. Here is some information that will help you make the choice. Dear listeners, Christmas is around the corner, which means we are preparing for our annual break over the New Year here at Tangle. 2023 has been exciting, grueling, and life changing. Every year since I started Tangle, I've taken a couple weeks off right after Christmas and through the New Year. And every year, I encourage our readers and listeners to do the same. Following the news closely is hard, as is being an engaged citizen, and it's important not to burn yourself out. If you are able, step away from the news for at least a few days, spend some time with family, get your feet back on the ground, and try to hit the reset button for the New Year. I'll be doing my best to unplug, reset, evaluate the year, and enjoy some much-needed time with my wife and family — to whom I have a massive debt of quality time to repay accrued over the past couple months of unprecedented work. Our team is taking off from December 25th until January 5th. You'll hear from us at least once over that break when we release our newest YouTube video (which I think is one of our most important videos yet), then potentially again in the event of a major news drop. Tangle members are also going to get a special edition of the Sunday newsletter on New Year's Eve. Until then, happy New Year, Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and please take our annual end-of-year survey and/or become a member before our prices go up! With much gratitude, Isaac & the Tangle team You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. Our podcast is written by Isaac Saul and edited and engineered by Jon Lall. Music for the podcast was produced by Diet 75. Our newsletter is edited by Managing Editor Ari Weitzman, Will Kaback, Bailey Saul, Sean Brady, and produced in conjunction with Tangle's social media manager Magdalena Bokowa, who also created our logo. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tanglenews/message

From myself and the entire Casefile team, we'd like to extend a massive thank you to each and every one of our loyal listeners. It's your ongoing support that allows us to keep doing what we do best and we couldn't do this without you. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season, and all the best for the new year ahead. Previously only available on Wondery+, In the Shadows is now freely available wherever you get your podcasts. Over seven episodes, the series delves into the 1991 unsolved murder of Maria Rodriguez; a horrific crime that quickly drew national media attention. The ensuing trials divided the community and sparked heated debate, while the perpetrator remained unpunished. Now, 32 years after Maria's murder, a fresh investigation takes an unexpected turn when several individuals reveal shocking information previously unknown by the authorities and public alike. We also have some other new Casefile Presents series that you will be able to binge while waiting for our return. Keep an eye on our podcast feed and social media channels for further announcements. When Casefile returns on August 19, our Patreon, Apple Premium and Spotify Premium subscribers will receive two new episodes instead of just one. If you would like to support us on any of those platforms, you'll gain access to our bonus show, Behind The Files, as well. On Behind The Files, we discuss the cases we've covered and answer all sorts of listener questions. You can also now follow me on Instagram. I recently created an account to share pictures of landscapes, nature, and concerts that I've taken over the past few years. You can find me @caseys.snaps, so come and say hi over there. Take care, and we'll see you back on Saturday August 19. Credits: French Guitar Jazz - music by Andy Slatter
To our loyal listeners: the festive season is upon us yet again, which means it's time for our annual end of year message. Case 224: Franca Viola was our final episode for 2022. We'll be back with brand new episodes in early February, but for now the Casefile team is taking a brief break to refresh and enjoy the holidays. All of us would like to thank each and every one of you for your ongoing support. 2022 was our seventh year running, and we couldn't have made it this far without you. There really are no words to express our gratitude for the time you take to listen and provide feedback each week. We're very lucky to have such loyal fans. A special thank you to all of our paid subscribers across Patreon, Apple Premium and Spotify premium. Your generous contributions go a long way in enabling us to provide the highest quality work possible. If you're looking for something else to listen to over the break, check out the Casefile Presents catalogue. This year we released some incredible new shows, including Matty, a 10 part series that explores the disappearance of 20-year-old Matt Leveson. There's also the Detective's Dilemma, which examines the moral quandary faced by the lead investigator in the murder of 22-year-old Sian O'Callaghan. Season Two of Pseudocide recently dropped, which looks into the disappearance of Patrick McDermott. These three shows are available for free exclusively on Spotify. We also worked with the Australian Federal Police to release Crime Interrupted, a series I narrated that explores some of their biggest and most challenging cases. Crime Interrupted is available for free on all podcasting platforms. In 2023 we'll be releasing more Casefile Presents shows, some of which have been years in the making. We're looking forward to telling you more about them soon. In the meantime, you can stay up to date by following us on Facebook, at facebook.com/Casefile; Instagram at Casefile Podcast; and Twitter at Case_File. We're also on TikTok. And if you'd like to help us out, we'd really appreciate you leaving a rating or review wherever you listen to Casefile. And if you're looking for the perfect Christmas gift for a fellow Casefile fan or amateur detective, consider the Casefile: Truth & Deception board game. It's available to purchase online at Amazon, and at selected Argos, Smyths and Game stores in the UK, as well as Walmart in the US. Finally, the entire Casefile team would like to wish everybody happy holidays, and a safe and healthy new year. See you in 2023!
