1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought sweet spices, that coming, they might anoint Jesus. 2 And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they come to the sepulchre, the sun being now risen. 3 And they said one to another: Who shall roll us back the stone from the door of the sepulchre? 4 And looking, they saw the stone rolled back. For it was very great.Et respicientes viderunt revolutum lapidem. Erat quippe magnus valde. 5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed with a white robe: and they were astonished.Et introeuntes in monumentum viderunt juvenem sedentem in dextris, coopertum stola candida, et obstupuerunt. 6 Who saith to them: Be not affrighted; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified: he is risen, he is not here, behold the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee; there you shall see him, as he told you.Sed ite, dicite discipulis ejus, et Petro, quia praecedit vos in Galilaeam : ibi eum videbitis, sicut dixit vobis

1 And in the end of the sabbath, when it began to dawn towards the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalen and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre. 2 And behold there was a great earthquake. For an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and coming, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.Et ecce terraemotus factus est magnus. Angelus enim Domini descendit de caelo : et accedens revolvit lapidem, et sedebat super eum : 3 And his countenance was as lightning, and his raiment as snow.erat autem aspectus ejus sicut fulgur : et vestimentum ejus sicut nix. 4 And for fear of him, the guards were struck with terror, and became as dead men. 5 And the angel answering, said to the women: Fear not you; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid. 7 And going quickly, tell ye his disciples that he is risen: and behold he will go before you into Galilee; there you shall see him. Lo, I have foretold it to you.Et cito euntes, dicite discipulis ejus quia surrexit : et ecce praecedit vos in Galilaeam : ibi eum videbitis : ecce praedixi vobis.

14 Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 15 And the Jews wondered, saying: How doth this man know letters, having never learned? 16 Jesus answered them, and said: My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.Respondit eis Jesus, et dixit : Mea doctrina non est mea, sed ejus qui misit me. 17 If any man do the will of him; he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.Si quis voluerit voluntatem ejus facere, cognoscet de doctrina, utrum ex Deo sit, an ego a meipso loquar. 18 He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and there is no injustice in him. 19 Did Moses not give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? 20 Why seek you to kill me? The multitude answered, and said: Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to kill thee?Quid me quaeritis interficere? Respondit turba, et dixit : Daemonium habes : quis te quaeret interficere? 21 Jesus answered, and said to them: One work I have done; and you all wonder:Respondit Jesus et dixit eis : Unum opus feci, et omnes miramini : 22 Therefore, Moses gave you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and on the sabbath day you circumcise a man.propterea Moyses dedit vobis circumcisionem ( non quia ex Moyse est, sed ex patribus), et in sabbato circumciditis hominem. 23 If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath day, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are you angry at me because I have healed the whole man on the sabbath day? 24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge just judgment.Nolite judicare secundum faciem, sed justum judicium judicate. 25 Some therefore of Jerusalem said: Is not this he whom they seek to kill? 26 And behold, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers known for a truth, that this is the Christ?et ecce palam loquitur, et nihil ei dicunt. Numquid vere cognoverunt principes quia hic est Christus? 27 But we know this man, whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.Sed hunc scimus unde sit : Christus autem cum venerit, nemo scit unde sit. 28 Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching, and saying: You both know me, and you know whence I am: and I am not come of myself; but he that sent me, is true, whom you know not.Clamabat ergo Jesus in templo docens, et dicens : Et me scitis, et unde sim scitis : et a meipso non veni, sed est verus qui misit me, quem vos nescitis. 29 I know him, because I am from him, and he hath sent me.Ego scio eum : quia ab ipso sum, et ipse me misit. 30 They sought therefore to apprehend him: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.Quaerebant ergo eum apprehendere : et nemo misit in illum manus, quia nondum venit hora ejus. 31 But of the people many believed in him, and said: When the Christ cometh, shall he do more miracles, than these which this man doth?

1 And it came to pass, that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be enrolled. 2 This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria.Haec descriptio prima facta est a praeside Syriae Cyrino :  3 And all went to be enrolled, every one into his own city.et ibant omnes ut profiterentur singuli in suam civitatem.  4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David,Ascendit autem et Joseph a Galilaea de civitate Nazareth in Judaeam, in civitatem David, quae vocatur Bethlehem : eo quod esset de domo et familia David,  5 To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.ut profiteretur cum Maria desponsata sibi uxore praegnante.  6 And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished, that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds watching, and keeping the night watches over their flock.Et pastores erant in regione eadem vigilantes, et custodientes vigilias noctis super gregem suum.  9 And behold an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone round about them; and they feared with a great fear.Et ecce angelus Domini stetit juxta illos, et claritas Dei circumfulsit illos, et timuerunt timore magno.  10 And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people:Et dixit illis angelus : Nolite timere : ecce enim evangelizo vobis gaudium magnum, quod erit omni populo :  11 For, this day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.quia natus est vobis hodie Salvator, qui est Christus Dominus, in civitate David.  12 And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God, and saying:Et subito facta est cum angelo multitudo militiae caelestis laudantium Deum, et dicentium :  14 Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will.Gloria in altissimis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis

The practice of recommending to God the souls of the departed in that we may mitigate the great pains which they suffer, and that He may soon bring them to His glory, is most pleasing to God and most profitable to us. For those blessed souls are His eternal spouses, and they are most grateful to those who obtain their deliverance from prison, or even a mitigation of their torments. Hence, when they shall enter into heaven, they will certainly not forget those who prayed for them, that they may also pray for us. Let us recommend to Jesus Christ, and to His holy Mother, all the souls in Purgatory, but especially those of our relatives, benefactors, friends, and enemies, and still more particularly, the souls of those for whom we are bound to pray; and let us consider the great pains which these holy spouses of Jesus Christ endure, and offer to God for their relief the Masses of this day.

34 Do not think that I came to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but the sword.Nolite arbitrari quia pacem venerim mittere in terram : non veni pacem mittere, sed gladium :  35 For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.veni enim separare hominem adversus patrem suum, et filiam adversus matrem suam, et nurum adversus socrum suam :  36 And a man's enemies shall be they of his own household.et inimici hominis, domestici ejus.  37 He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me.Qui amat patrem aut matrem plus quam me, non est me dignus : et qui amat filium aut filiam super me, non est me dignus.  38 And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me.Et qui non accipit crucem suam, et sequitur me, non est me dignus.  39 He that findeth his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for me, shall find it.Qui invenit animam suam, perdet illam : et qui perdiderit animan suam propter me, inveniet eam.  40 He that receiveth you, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.Qui recipit vos, me recipit : et qui me recipit, recipit eum qui me misit.  41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet: and he that receiveth a just man in the name of a just man, shall receive the reward of a just man.Qui recipit prophetam in nomine prophetae, mercedem prophetae accipiet : et qui recipit justum in nomine justi, mercedem justi accipiet.  42 And whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.Et quicumque potum dederit uni ex minimis istis calicem aquae frigidae tantum in nomine discipuli : amen dico vobis, non perdet mercedem suam. St Wenceslaus, duke of Bohemia, was persecuted by his unnatural mother Drahomira and his impious brother and successor, Boleslas, out of hatred for the Faith. He was murdered by the latter in a church where he was praying A.D. 938. These stories of the saints were read to me by my mother, Elizabeth Kucala, God rest her soul, when I was a child and made me strong in my faith. This one is especially interesting to me because my grandparents on my mother's side were from Bohemia.

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: The Handmaid's Tale: As the United States ramps up Election season, ACOFAE reflects on the past - to 1985 specifically with Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. As ACOFAE's first speculative fiction novel, Laura Marie and Jessica Marie discuss the genre, the message, and the ending of this book that left Laura Marie speechless when she first read it. Conversations abound about the issue that arises when the visual media overtakes the source material and what happens when fandom conversations superimpose themselves on the actual content. The Handmaid's Tale is not an easy read but it is an important one that ends with notes of change and reflection, if not joy. If we don't study the past we will repeat it. Right? RIGHT?! Laura Marie's audio is a bit wonky, Sam is annoyed about it WEBSITES: https://lithub.com/margaret-atwood-on-how-she-came-to-write-the-handmaids-tale/ https://www.litcharts.com/lit/the-handmaid-s-tale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-42q_VkuGPY https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2023/03/margaret-atwood-dishes-on-new-story-collection-trials-of-censorship/ https://www.penguin.co.uk/articles/2019/09/margaret-atwood-handmaids-tale-testaments-real-life-inspiration https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/margaret-atwood-interview-season-4-handmaids-tale-1171567/ https://www.businessinsider.com/handmaids-tale-based-on-real-world-origins-history-events-2019-8 https://www.cbc.ca/radio/q/blog/the-handmaid-s-tale-10-intriguing-facts-about-margaret-atwood-s-dystopian-novel-1.4086298 https://www.stylist.co.uk/books/handmaids-tale-true-story/130001 TW / CW: Sexual assault, suicide, patriarchy For additional TW/CW information for your future reads, head to this site for more: https://triggerwarningdatabase.com/ Spoilers: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, slight spoilers from the ACOTAR series, including ACOSF (A Court of Silver Flames) Mentions: Game of Thrones, The Boys, ACOTAR, House of the Dragon, Serpent and Dove *Thank you for listening to us! 13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.Vos estis sal terrae. 14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita,  15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.neque accedunt lucernam, et ponunt eam sub modio, sed super candelabrum, ut luceat omnibus qui in domo sunt.  16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. 17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat caelum et terra, jota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant.  19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. He walks upon the sea and discourses of the bread of life.  1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias.Post haec abiit Jesus trans mare Galilaeae, quod est Tiberiadis :  2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased.et sequebatur eum multitudo magna, quia videbant signa quae faciebat super his qui infirmabantur.  3 Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. 4 Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand.Erat autem proximum Pascha dies festus Judaeorum.  5 When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes, and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?Cum sublevasset ergo oculos Jesus, et vidisset quia multitudo maxima venit ad eum, dixit ad Philippum : Unde ememus panes, ut manducent hi?  6 And this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he would do.Hoc autem dicebat tentans eum : ipse enim sciebat quid esset facturus.  7 Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little.Respondit ei Philippus : Ducentorum denariorum panes non sufficiunt eis, ut unusquisque modicum quid accipiat.  8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him:Dicit ei unus ex discipulis ejus, Andreas, frater Simonis Petri :  9 There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves, and two fishes; but what are these among so many? 10 Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.Dixit ergo Jesus : Facite homines discumbere. Erat autem foenum multum in loco. Discumberunt ergo viri, numero quasi quinque millia.  11 And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would. 12 And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost. 13 They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. 14 Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world. 15 Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone. 16 And when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea. 17 And when they had gone up into a ship, they went over the sea to Capharnaum; and it was now dark, and Jesus was not come unto them. 18 And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew.Mare autem, vento magno flante, exsurgebat.  19 When they had rowed therefore about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking upon the sea, and drawing nigh to the ship, and they were afraid. 20 But he saith to them: It is I; be not afraid.Ille autem dicit eis : Ego sum, nolite timere.  21 They were willing therefore to take him into the ship; and presently the ship was at the land to which they were going. 22 The next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was no other ship there but one, and that Jesus had not entered into the ship with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone. But other ships came in from Tiberias; nigh unto the place where they had eaten the bread, the Lord giving thanks.aliae vero supervenerunt naves a Tiberiade juxta locum ubi manducaverunt panem, gratias agente Domino.  24 When therefore the multitude saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they took shipping, and came to Capharnaum, seeking for Jesus. 25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him: Rabbi, when camest thou hither? 26 Jesus answered them, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled. 27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed. 28 They said therefore unto him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?Dixerunt ergo ad eum : Quid faciemus ut operemur opera Dei?  29 Jesus answered, and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent. 30 They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew, that we may see, and may believe thee? What dost thou work?Dixerunt ergo ei : Quod ergo tu facis signum ut videamus et credamus tibi? quid operaris?  31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.Patres nostri manducaverunt manna in deserto, sicut scriptum est : Panem de caelo dedit eis manducare.  32 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world. 34 They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread. 35 And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.Dixit autem eis Jesus : Ego sum panis vitae : qui venit ad me, non esuriet, et qui credit in me, non sitiet umquam.  36 But I said unto you, that you also have seen me, and you believe not. 37 All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will not cast out.Omne quod dat mihi Pater, ad me veniet : et eum qui venit ad me, non ejiciam foras :  38 Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.quia descendi de caelo, non ut faciam voluntatem meam, sed voluntatem ejus qui misit me.  39 Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day. 40 And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth in him, may have life everlasting, and I will raise him up in the last day. 41 The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the living bread which came down from heaven.Murmurabant ergo Judaei de illo, quia dixisset : Ego sum panis vivus, qui de caelo descendi,  42 And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then saith he, I came down from heaven?et dicebant : Nonne hic est Jesus filius Joseph, cujus nos novimus patrem et matrem? quomodo ergo dicit hic : Quia de caelo descendi?  43 Jesus therefore answered, and said to them: Murmur not among yourselves.Respondit ergo Jesus, et dixit eis : Nolite murmurare in invicem :  44 No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him; and I will raise

Venerable Bede (673-735), the first English historian, was consecrated to God from childhood. He became a Benedictine monk in the monestery of Jarrow in Northumberland, and trained there some six hundred scholars. His Ecclesiastical History of England is a treasure to scholars and lovers of spiritual life alike; but his principal study was ever the Bible. When this great Englishman died, on Ascension Day, 735, he had just finished dictating the final sentence of a translation of the Gospel of St John.
