Final Draft - Great Conversations
Book Club - Grace Chan's Every Version of You

Final Draft - Great Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2024 4:53

Grace Chan is a speculative fiction writer and psychiatrist. Her short fiction has appeared in Going Down Swinging, Aurealis, amongst many others, and she has been shortlisted for the Aurealis Awards, the Norma K Hemming Award, and Viva la Novella.  Today I've brought in Grace Chan's techno-futurist novel Every Version of You. In the not too distant future Australia, like much of the world around it, is a harsh and hostile place to live. Those with the means can protect themselves in hermetically sealed apartments and even afford the occasional luxury of fresh food that grew in the earth rather than a lab. Tao-Yi and Navin have grown up in a world in decline and have watched as their existence moved into increasingly digital spaces. The world of Gaia began as a digital frontier but now it is the place where Tao-Yi works and socialises. Gaia's immersive nature parallels the declines in Navin's health until it seems there is little choice but for Navin to upload himself permanently into the system. What harm could it do? Navin is convinced there are only benefits as he stares down his own mortality. So much of their lives already pass in Gaia, this would just be making it official. Tao-Yi is less sure. Her mother stubbornly refuses to log in and Tao-Yi doesn't know what it will mean for all of their humanity if she lets go of this terrestrial life. --------- I am a fan of science fiction and fantasy from way back, and while I rarely worry about the emergence of dragons into my workaday life, there is always something of a concern about bracket creep when it comes to near future speculative fiction. Where twenty years ago Every Version of You might have sat alongside The Matrix as firmly in the realm of science fiction. Now we can read updates on our own digital proxies about Neuralink implant chips into people's brains. I'm confident that I'll get this to you before the tech outpaces the story but not so much about the longevity of this review as anything other than an artifact. And so it becomes essential to engage with stories like Every Version of You, and so much the better that Grace Chan's novel is such a compelling read! The story is refreshingly ordinary even as it stretches us into the digital fantastic. The world of Tao-Yi and Navin is circumscribed much in the ways all our lives were during the pandemic and hence their escape into Gaia all the more relatable. The world of Gaia is both incredible and prosaic. Never fear that tachyon processing will free us of our most banal predispositions. Every Version of You assures us that we will still have insecurity and jealousy, but so also will we have ambition and love. Traveling alongside Tao-Yi we must face the possibility that the digital world is our world but that it cannot perfectly coexist with our flesh and blood selves. This entanglement is not clear cut and I cannot assure the book offers answers. It is the journey that is the adventure as we struggle alongside Tao-Yi and Navin to understand how they might continue to exist and to be themselves when so much of what that means is disappearing. This is also a love story and that was what completely suckered me into the futurism. I'm not so sure what it might mean to live forever, digitally or otherwise, but it has long been a concern of fiction to wonder how that long life and all its changes might impact our hearts. Could you love someone digitally and how do we let go of the humanness that comes with life as we know it. These are the real questions of speculative and science fiction; not how do we transcend our mortality, but how do we hold on when it seems to be escaping us?

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants the ugly, untalented gays to please report to the principal's office. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2023 instant cult classic Bottoms for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. This film had an incredibly limited theatrical run, but still managed to end up with an astounding (and well-deserved) 90% critic-score on Rotten Tomatoes. If you have not had a chance to watch Bottoms yet, we highly recommend renting it before listening to this episode, as it's honestly just so much more fun to go in with as little information as possible.  Bottoms is a wildly queer and campy teen movie a la American Pie and SuperBad. Unlike its straighter counterparts, this film flips a lot of the stereotypes on their heads in a way that we really love. Main character PJ is actually pretty terrible. She's constantly objectifying every girl she sees and lying more often than she tells the truth, and yet, we are totally here for it! Her bestie Josie is not far behind her in the making completely crazy decisions department as she spends the entire first half of the movie lying through her teeth about literally killing other kids in juvie (spoiler alert: neither of these ‘ugly, untalented gays' was ever in juvie).  No matter how chaotic Bottoms seems at first, it is still a shock to see just how far the movie takes things. Sure, we knew the girls were going to create a fight club, but nothing about that premise could have prepared us for the absolute massacre that is the ending. The violence ramps up throughout the story- a broken nose here, a car bombing there; each incident slowly getting the audience more and more acclimated to the off-the-rails violence until it becomes totally plausible that these teenage girls are just full-on publically murdering football players left and right. This film holds back exactly 0 punches all while managing to keep the main characters relatable enough that they speak to the baby gay in us all.  At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Bottoms, “Going Down Swinging”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. The Roman Empire...The McDonald's .99 Double Cheeseburger...my ability to adequately host a podcast...all great things will come to an end, and this includes the once untouchable "Marvel Cinematic Universe".It was the best of times, and it's currently the worst of times for Kevin Feige and the MCU.  Disney + content is diluting the brand with mediocre series, the movies have been wildly inconsistent and convoluted, and "The Marvels" just made slightly less money than my elementary school's D.A.R.E. fundraiser in 1994, and it was also terrible and immediately forgotten.  Dark times, but it's always darkest before the dawn...right?? Right everyone? Please God tell me dawn is coming! We are gathered here for this very special episode to discuss "The Marvels", discuss how to save the MCU, and discuss the future projects and what they need to accomplish to steer this sinking ship back to respectability.  Just like my father said to me when I turned 13...it's time for a tough conversation. In this conversation Vincent reflects on his first novel, Sisters of No Mercy, speaks about his passion for collective organising and shares with us a writing exercise that we can use to ground ourselves during this health pandemic.  Grounding exercise shared by Vincent Silk (extract from interview)It’s an automatic writing exercise, so some people like to set a timer and do it while having a coffee or cup of tea. Try 20 minutes. It’s been really hard to ground myself with all the uneasiness and confusion of this global pandemic. So I have been trying to use writing to ground myself, and feel joy or pleasure.Take a line from your favourite book, poem, song, performance. Mine is from the transcript of a live performance I saw in NYC earlier this year, by a collective called What Would A HIV Doula Do? -  ‘I want to be seen. By you. I don’t want to be dismissed or forgotten.’Speak the line aloud to yourself. Write it down. Really think about why it speaks to you. Write down how it makes you feel. Where do you feel it resonate in your body? Does it make your shoulders light? Does it make you want to stand up and stretch your legs?Whose voice do you hear when you speak this line aloud? If you had to respond to it, what would you say?Write down these things, and as you do, notice how the words are flowing. Keep writing as unconsciously as possible, your reactions to the quote you wrote down, and your reactions to your own words and ideas as they form on the page. Let your thoughts come in whatever way they do. When you’re done, read over what you’ve written, and observe any reflections you have about how you’re feeling. Do you feel a new meaning in the prompt phrase? Do you feel connected to what you’ve written? You might even like to share it with someone else. Or keep it to yourself.

Spirit of Punk To begin our new season, we have something very special for you. A series of live stories we recorded in conjunction with the Spirit of Punk at the end of last year at Buck Mulligan's bar in Melbourne. The principle of Spirit of Punk is simple. All you need to do is show up and read a piece of your work no longer than the duration of a Ramones song. How easy is that? The recordings are live so there are some little mic disturbances here and there. But more than anything there is the unmistakeable courage of writers taking to the stage to read their non-fiction stories.. So to kick it all off, here is Nic Brasch to tell us how he started the Spirit of Punk. And as with every Spirit of punk event, Nic follows his introduction by reading one of his own pieces. Tonight, Nic reads his flash memoir, I Can Tell Anyone Anything. Writers in this episode I Can Tell Anyone Anything by Nic Brasch My story is prompted by some advice I got from the writer, Christos Tsiolkas, who told me, ‘You can tell anyone anything’, after I had related an experience related to my sister’s suicide. His advice was spot on. Nicolas is a writer, a teacher of writing, Chair of Writers Victoria, and the founder and host of Spirit of Punk, an open mic event for emerging writers. Mind Your Own Business by Erica Murdoch You think that you know everything there is to know about your parents. You have them pigeonholed and all worked out. Or so you think. Then life throws a curveball and you are left breathless, skeptical and scared. And underneath it all maybe not surprised. Maybe the clues were there all along and you just chose to ignore them. Erica is a freelance writer and has completed an Associate Degree of Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT She has been published in Fairfax Media, Weekend Notes and N-scribe.
