In today's episode, "Zebrafish Husbandry Reporting & Reproducibility Initiative (Part 1)," we talk with former Zebrafish Husbandry Association President Michelle Altemara about her new initiative to standardize reporting in fish research papers. Science has a reproducibility problem and oftentimes it's because we don't account for all of the variables. Sometimes, “we keep fish on a recirculating rack” is not a good enough way to describe husbandry. If two different facilities are keeping fish at completely different light cycles, the scientific outcomes might be very different! Luckily Michelle and her colleagues are trying to change that by working with journals to advocate for better guidelines on this exact thing. Come listen! This podcast is brought to you by the lungfish. The lungfish quite literally possesses lungs but it also possesses working gills, making it one of the most adaptable species on earth. Other fish might consider them cheaters for having both functioning organs while fish and other animals only possess one. This leads to lungfish often being ostracized at parties and left out of group activities. Cheers to you lungfish. You were born this way and you are special. Double Tap Episode 402 This episode of Double Tap is brought to you by: Brownells, Black Rhino Concealment, Swampfox Optics, Medical Gear Outfitters, Night Fision, and Matador Arms Welcome to Double Tap, episode 402! Your hosts tonight are Jeremy Pozderac, Aaron Krieger, Nick Lynch, and me Shawn Herrin, welcome to the show! Dear WLS Dependable Don - Jeremy vs people that think 22 is a viable carry option, in a bus. Who wins? Jimmy - I have a 16” AR10 in 308 that runs like a champ. I bought a nickel boron BCG to have as a back up, but it has a persistent issue. When chambering a round it often fails to go into battery. If I ram it home with the forward assist it will then fire the round but fail to extract the case. The case heads show damage at the rim including crushing and tearing of the rim. My assumption is that the extractor is out of spec. It moves freely and the spring tension seems comparable to the original Aero. I've read somewhere about tuning extractors by changing the hook angle but I've never tried anything like that. I know I can just replace the extractor, but I'm taking this as a learning experience. I have a caliper and files, but I need some intel. Where would I find the schematics showing the correct shape & size of the extractor? Would you guys try this procedure or shitcan this garbage? By the time you read this I will probably have solved the problem, but hopefully it sparks a conversation. Thanks. Andrew C - What's up my dudes, Why the fuck does Aaron always sound like he has cotton balls in his mouth on the pod? Shitty mic or does he just sound like that? Either way it does'nt make me hate him any less. Anywho, I am starting a P365 build and want to get your guys opinion on a couple things. I already bought the base model 365 (basically just for slide and fcu) as well as a radian ramjet/afterburner for it. My goal is to put that on an xmacro frame so everything sits flush at the end of the pistol while having more to grip on the module. Do you guys have any recommendations on grip modules, triggers, trigger spring kits, etc? Looking at the wilson combat grip module or just getting the Sig xmacro frame and throwing on the radian backstrap/magwell. Also looking at the Tyrant cnc intellifire and pairng it with the tactical triggers trigger kit to take care of slop and crisp it up a fair amount. Any input/experience with those items or have other recs?Yes, I already know that putting all this on an xmacro frame makes it a larger gun to carry, but I dont give two shits about that. TIA for any input. Stay free or get fucked. Ethan P - For those of us planning our GunCon trip already. Jeremy, where should we go to eat while we're in your town? Jay W - Wasssaaaaaappp (man I miss the 90s and those Budweiser commercials) I just picked up my 2nd suppressor (Anechoic 30) and decided to go with the Deadair Keymo, found a brake and adapter at Brownells (use code WLS10). This is my first QD setup and thought a QD would be smart with a 30 cal can to swap it on a few of my builds for youtube reviews and flexibility with my arsenal (until I get more cans). So what's the deal with the mixed feelings on keymo? Depending on who you talk to you get a different opinion and some opinions (while everyone is entitled to one) are just plain dumb. You guys have a range of backgrounds and I'm just wondering if I did ok with choosing keymo or if I should convert to something else (since I'm not fully committed yet). Note- No notes. P.S. Who is the jackass that invented P.S. for letters? Like bro, just find space in the paragraph above to get your point across and end the letter with ""Sincerely"" and wrap it up B. Travis M - Nick, You've mentioned primarily appendix carrying, what holster brand and model do you use for your Smith & Wesson Airweight? Does your holster use belt loops, ulti clips or something else? Shoot straight, Travis

Jack Thomson of gekkotaculture discusses his experience with keeping reptiles in general, as well as his recent love for various gecko species such as the Uroplatus genus. He talks about his experience in keeping his reptiles during college, as well as his career aspirations in working at ZooMed and where he is in that job now. One of the most popular aspect of Jack's care has been the addition of the “gecko room”, which is a tent set up in his garage that keeps the humidity and temperatures at the proper amounts, making the gecko species more maintainable to keep. He also goes over some of the downsides and additions that he would like to make to the tent set up, the species he keeps there, and the enclosures that he keeps them in. Jack goes over in detail what the husbandry of various Uroplatus species have outlined such as their diets, enclosure sizes, breeding activity, lighting, and humidity as well as any other aspects that came up in conversation. He also offers advice to people who are interested in keeping a species of Uroplatus, and shares the overall love that he has for the species & what makes them so interesting to keep. Newly described as it's own species, Cruziohyla sylviae is a prime candidate for research. Captive populations are an important factor in ensuring the species' survival for a number of reasons. And as such, a proper science based understanding of their care and breeding is vital. This week I am joined by Sam Sucre of Natural Tanks. We discuss his recently published paper documenting Cruziohyla sylviae husbandry and we have a very frank discussion about some of the successes and failures associated with conservation efforts. It's been two weeks and Chance still has not finished a play through of Baldur's Gate 3. He has started over, twice, and then gone back to punching zombies in Dead Island 2. Alex has emerged from his cruise unscathed, or at least well enough to get started on the Persona 3 remake and Prince of Persia The Lost crown. And Chamberlain, who has never played a Pokémon game, has put a ton of hours into Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance, which is literally a Pokémon game, just with heavy religious imagery.

You might know the very funny Helen Hong from TV's Silicon Valley, the film Inside Llewyn Davis, NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, or Maximum Fun's quiz podcast Go Fact Yourself. If you live in South Central L.A., you might know her as the lady with four chickens in her backyard and a really disappointing crop of snap peas. Helen tells us all about her chickens Fifi, Coco, Athena, and Ditsy, including how she came to acquire them, why she chose to do so, and how many eggs they yield on an average day. We also discuss Mike the Headless Chicken, a bird who found a head to be unnecessary in the 1940s and who, when attempting to crow, simply gurgled.Hey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber? Join Kenny Troiano, as he talks about the interesting world of dog. In each topic, he will go deep into the art and science of breeding dogs. Becoming a reputable breeder requires more than just a love for dogs—it demands a profound understanding of genetics, evolutionary biology, animal husbandry, and the commitment to maintaining proper breed standards. From understanding the difference between "Phenotype" and "Genotype" to having the courage required to create a true family. Learn the importance of selection and culling, where producing a large number of dogs, some being culls, is essential to uncovering the true standouts in a lineage. Discover why pedigree alone does not define a dog's worth, and why the “Name Game” should be avoided in favor of improving essential traits. He talks about the myths and truths surrounding bloodlines and hybrid vigor, and debunks common misconceptions about purity versus hybridization. Gain a greater understand of inbreeding, COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding), and the delicate balance required to maintain genetic diversity, while striving for uniformity, consistency and improvement. Whether you're a beginner breeder, dreaming of starting a new line, or a seasoned breeder aiming to refine an established one, Kenny provides invaluable insights and practical advice. He also talks about the challenges, triumphs, and dedication needed to breed and create a true family or strain. This is a show that you do not want to miss! Topics: Understand the breed Experience, as a breeder, is important, but Knowledge of breeding is required Husbandry practices - what should you know Commitment to one family Courage to do what's necessary Patience and Perseverance The importance of Selection and Culling It's important to know the difference between “Phenotype” and “Genotype.” Must be willing to produce culls to find the standouts Make sure your animals are worthy of breeding The Numbers are Necessary One animal should never represent the foundation of a whole family Avoid the Name Game - it's the peddlers playground Truth about bloodlines - purity of blood, or mongrelization? The offspring always prove the worth of the Parents Percentage Game is not real Don't breed to extremes The Offspring must be better than the parents - Or you are not improving the family. Understand that “Nothing is Perfect” Maintaining hybrid vigor is not a good thing. The Myth about hybrids and outcrosses The problem with reintroducing old blood Inbreeding and Managing the COI Performance traits and gameness are never improved in one mating or cross Consistency and uniformity is only improved or maintained through inbreeding How long does it take to create a family? Is a pedigree important? We specialize in breeding, and breeding related topics. This includes proper selection practices and the use of proven breeding programs. It is our mission to provide our followers and members a greater understanding of poultry breeding, poultry genetics, poultry health care and disease prevention, and how to improve the production and performance ability of your fowl. If you are interested in creating a strain, or improving your established strain, you are in the right place. We also want to encourage you to join us at the Breeders Academy, where we will not only help you increase your knowledge of breeding and advance your skills as a breeder, but improve the quality and performance of your fowl. Doing your own parasite checks on your chameleon has long been for advanced keepers. But there is no reason why this cannot be a part of every day chameleon husbandry for anyone with multiple chameleons.Today I am making the argument for adding fecal checks to standard husbandry.
This week we're continuing our conversation with Dr Susan Friedman and Rick Hester. Dr Friedman has been a frequent guest on this podcast. She is a professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology at Utah State University. She is pioneer in the use of Applied Behavior Analysis in the handling of captive and companion animals. Her interest in developing scientifically sound, ethical standards for animal care and training prompted our this current conversation. We are also joined by Rick Hester. Rick is the curator of behavioral Husbandry for the Cheyenne Mountain zoo. Rick overseas the zoo's training program for husbandry, medical and public show behaviors. In this episode we consider many important questions, including what does it mean to be a positive reinforcement trainer? How do we operationalize that? How do we evaluate new ideas? We don't want to move too quickly but nor do we want to get stuck in old ideas. Why does novelty have such a draw for us? We also consider why Susan has chosen to keep punishment in the hierarchy of behavior change strategies. This opens the door to a discussion of negative reinforcement as well as punishment. Do we need new words to describe the procedures we use?
This is Part 1 of a three part conversation with Dr. Susan Friedman and Rick Hester. Dr. Friedman has been a frequent guest on this podcast. Most of you I'm sure already know Susan. But just as a reminder, Susan is a professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology at Utah State University. She is a pioneer in the use of Applied Behavior Analysis in the handling of captive and companion animals. I value the perspective he brings to training. When you work with horses it all too easy to think you have to rely on force-based methods for some medical and husbandry behaviors - and then you see what's being done in zoos. We begin by talking about why it matters to have ethical standards guiding the training choices we make. We are talking about training goals and strategies that provide our learners with choice and a lifestyle of control.
Today we're talking to renowned trainer Deb Jones, Ph.D., about Cooperative Care - the most important skills you're (probably) not training your dog to do! Also called Consent Care or Husbandry, I'm referring to the procedures needed to keep dogs healthy such as veterinary care and grooming. If you'd rather get a root canal than take your dog to the vet or if you can't trim your dog's nails without needing a drink afterwards, then you won't want to miss this conversation. Deb is the author of the book Cooperative Care: Seven Steps to Stress-Free Husbandry (aff. link). Her methods encourage our dogs to become willing partners in the training process rather than using heavy-handed or forceful practices that can damage our relationship with our dog and hurt their trust. Deb shares with us what she learned from dolphin trainers that will help our dogs, what to do if you accidentally “quick” your dog while trimming their nails and how to handle those times when your dog needs immediate care to avoid causing a setback in your training and relationship. We'll also hear the #1 most common skill that veterinarians wish Pet Parents trained their dogs to do! While Deb's former “day job” was as a Ph.D. Psychologist who taught in colleges, it's fascinating how her work intertwined with her dog training passion. And as someone who's been training dogs for 30+ years, Deb has so much insight to share about her experiences in the dog training world and the changes she's witnessed in how we treat dogs as a society. You can also find Deb teaching online training classes and in her Cooperative Care with Deb Jones Facebook Group. This week's epdisode is designed with the beginner in mind. When we start out as hobbyists, it's very common to make mistakes. Husbandry and care can be researched, but our knowledge base always grows through experience. In this episode, I discuss some common beginner mistakes and how to fix them. I cover what to do if you start out with an impulse purchase frog, how to to positively engage the community for help, and how to manage negative criticism. Before I left for my month and a half long vacation, I had Jordan stop by the studio to talk about all things guitars. He plays in a band called Husbandry which just released some new goodies. On top of that, you might recognize him from doing a metric ton of videos at The Music Zoo. We met a few years back and hit it off with our love for wood and steel strings! I love it when I find chefs and restaurants that not only push out the best dishes you can imagine, but also, lead by example. In a perfect world, a restaurant would open it's doors and just cook for it's guests. But unfortunately, that isn't the way the world works. In the span from dusk to dawn, a guest's life can change in an instant. A hurricane, a fire, an oil spill, or this, takes away the option of just being able to eat. "It's times like these you learn to live again. It's time like these you learn to give again."Right now, Louisiana is dealing with a problem I didn't think could ever happen. Our Louisiana Government denied MILLIONS of dollars to feed our own state's children throughout the summer. Money that was sent to Louisiana for this reason was rejected.Well, that is when the chefs and restaurants answer to the calls from the helpless. With that said, Top Chef has always been one of my favorite shows to watch. AND it just came back on to celebrate its 21st season! Our first guest this week went ALL THE WAY to the finals in Season 13! (the season where they cooked all across the country)Chef Issac Toups and his wife, Amanda opened their restaurant, Toups Meatery back in 2012 on N Carrolton Ave and began churning out some of the most delicious cajun delicacies anyone can imagine. Since then, he and Amanda have helped during natural disasters and now have just opened it' doors to the families that will not have the money to buy food for the kids over the summer. Folks, this is what I am talking. This is the selfless love that comes from a select few. They are role models. New Orleans is indebted forever to their generosity. If you or someone you know can help Chef Issac and Amanda on their amazing mission, please call them at 504-252-4999Then Later, we welcome back our dear friends at Audubon Institute to see how everything is going Under the Sea at the Audubon Aquarium! What better team member to talk to than the Director of Husbandry! This particular team member finds all of the curators and talent that fills every nook and cranny! Literally! Over at the Aquarium, their director, Higino Covarrubias is here today to answer some of the best Sea Life questions submitted by YOU! We had a little contest and the FIRST question selected by Mr. Higino, wins a $25 gift card from our friends at Rouse's!
