I love a good whydunnit! Greg Hickey's novel, Parabellum, is structured differently from the average mystery novel. This book starts with a horrific, terrifying event and then jumps back in time by a year. It follows four individuals, the ex-athlete, the programmer, the veteran, and the student, and examines their lives and what may have cause any one of them to take their pain out on the group of innocent people from the event at the start of the book. After Greg reads Chapter 1 of the book to us, I ask him about this structure and what inspired him to write the book this way. We also talk about the themes in the book, including the responsibility of society to take care of its members. Also in our interview, Greg mentions the free novella available at his website called The Theory of Anything. You can learn more about the book and get your free copy here. Excerpt from Parabellum The ex-college athlete remembered her first concussion the way she remembered her first so-called memory of getting stuck in the unsodded mud patch between her family’s new home and the neighbor’s when she was one and a half. It was not a truly a memory, she knew, so much as an amalgamation of other memory fragments and the accounts of others and conjured imaginings all wrapped around a kernel of true recollection, like how your cells begin to die the minute you are born and are constantly shed away or eaten by your own macrophages and replaced by others, so that in the course of a lifetime you are a completely different physical entity from the one you were at the start. Except for your brain. Neurons don’t get replaced. They hang on as long as they can, and when enough of them die, so do you. So that’s you, in the you-est sense. Your brain and its memories are the canvas of you-ness upon which you shellac fresh coats of cells and ideas to maintain an appearance of life and identity. She was nine, playing in the fifth soccer game of her life and tracking the ball as it arced through the crisp blue autumn sky, one of the miraculous times a stubby little leg had lifted the ball more than a foot off the ground. She was chasing the ball, and a girl on the opposing team was running to meet it. When she woke up, she was staring again into the clear sky, and her father later told her she had bumped heads with the other young girl and had been knocked unconscious. Her parents took her to the hospital for routine tests. After the doctor told her she had only suffered a mild concussion and, aside from a slight headache and some sleepiness that could last a few days, she would be fine, her mother handed her a silver chain with a star-shaped pendant. Years later, after the most recent in her long line of head traumas, her mother had fingered the star as it rested below her collar bones and said, “Remember, no matter what happens, you won’t always be a soccer player, but you can always be a star.”

This week Greg interviews Khun Voranai Vanijaka, a well-known Thai journalist, social commentator, and founder and editor-in-chief of Thisrupt.co, an English language website and social media enterprise that focuses on social and political issues in Thailand. Khun Voranai explains his unique background as a Thai man who grew up in Austin, TX, and also that Thisrupt is currently self-funded by him, but that he is negotiating with investors. He and Greg next elucidate Thisrupt’s vision: politics, society, and economics are really all just aspects of culture, and Thisrupt’s goal is to focus on all facets of ‘Thainess.’ After Greg asks about the site’s edgy content, Voranai contends that it is a journalist’s duty to ‘push the envelope’ and not simply be PR for the government. He explains that a society cannot improve without first being able to speak and generate dialogue on a topic, and he insists that he will not be cowed in bringing up sensitive issues. They also discuss Thailand’s changing younger generation and the impact of new technology and social media on Thai society. As Voranai states, he doesn’t like Thailand’s past or present, but he’s looking forward to its future.  As always, the podcast will continue to be 100% funded by listeners just like you who get some special swag from us. A passionate debate erupts among the panel on the topic of the “Cancel Culture,” Social Media, and the recent anti-police protest movement.  Greg suggests that a line may have been crossed but also that it’s hard to justify using deadly force in defense of Confederate statutes.  Jim contends that an increase in crime and on-going protests and destruction of statues must be contained, or we risk a complete break-down in public safety and societal norms.  Jeff pushes back hard on Jim’s “slippery slope” argument, asserting that going from attacking symbols of oppression to the decline of civilization is a huge and unjustifiable leap.  Jerad contends that the push back on racism has been a long time coming, and is a huge concern for younger Americans.  Greg contends a “law-and-order” backlash has not occurred because, thanks to cell phone cameras, white America finally saw the truth in what black America has been saying for years: that cops are abusive and lie about it when challenged.     After Greg pokes a little fun at Jim, the episode concludes with a virtual group hug to let Jim know that we love him.

This week the guys address a common concern of long term expats: how best to keep in touch with family and friends back home. That is...if you want to. We’re lucky that modern technology such as Facebook and Skype make it technologically easy to keep in touch, but the simple fact of being 5,000 miles away makes it impossible to keep track of the minutiae (and sometimes even the broad strokes) of people’s lives. Both Greg and Ed admit that some triage is required; difficult choices must be made about who to keep in touch with and who to drop. But surprise! After Greg complains about a friend back home who doesn’t answer emails, Ed admits the he is that guy. Ed discusses his guilt over doing such a bad job maintaining relationships even though (in theory) modern technology should make it easier. Although the boys don’t come up with any perfect answer to this problem, they air some thoughts and advice about how not to alienate important people back home. 008: Greg Crabtree - What Is the Labor Efficiency Ratio and Why Should You Care?

Scaling Up Business Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2016 34:56

Greg Crabtree is a speaker, author, entrepreneur, and financial expert. In 2011, Greg published his first book, Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits! where he shares his core principles on how to turn your business into a wealth building machine. Today, Greg and I discuss the labor efficiency ratio (LER) and what it means to your business. Greg grew up on a chicken farm in Alabama and quickly realized that raising chickens was not something he was destined to do. At the age of 14, his mother took him to a CPA to have the family's taxes filed and he discovered a passion for finances. If you were to get run over by a bus today, what would it take for your family to continue your business? Who could accurately replace you? Greg says there are two types of laborer categories: direct labor and management labor. Based on the role you play in your business and what category you fall in, you will have to find a person that matches your category type in order to successfully carry on the business. By practicing this methodology, it helps you find a clearer picture of what your role is within the company. So instead of working on the business, you're working more effectively in the business. Greg shares a quick example of applying this methodology in real time. One of his clients had $600,000 in revenue and 25% of that was profit split between two owners. However, their main issue was that they were having cash flow problems. Greg understands that if you're having cash flow problems at 25% profit, then there must be something fundamentally wrong with the business. It turns out that the owners were only making 4% in profit instead. Greg then worked with the owners on how they could increase their contribution margin and increase their numbers by $140,000. For this particular business, they had the right people, but they were just not getting the right kind of accountability out of them. After Greg gave them a new set of goals to strive for, which they hit flawlessly, the two owners ended up making 19% profit in their first year. Greg believes, it first starts with holding the management team accountable and to define clearly what they must strive for in order to earn their wages or bonuses. The work Greg provides is often above and beyond what you would usually receive from a typical tax accountant. Greg really strives to help optimize your business by using simple formulas and data to create effective and money-saving processes.   Interview Links: SimpleNumbers Website Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits! by Greg Crabtree More Resources: ScalingUpBusiness.com:  Learn about how growth coaching can help you and and your business see big results.
