2023.08.19 – 0961 – The ‘Sing Song' DeliverySing Song DeliverySymptom: This presentation or reading style is characterised by an artificial, repetitive pattern of a gradual rise in pitch for the first part of a sentence …. and then a gradual fall until the end is reached. Or any other regularly-repeated and predictable rhythm in melody which takes the listener away from understanding what is being said, to how it is being said instead, and may bore or annoy them. Rhythms struggle against the sense of a sentence and muddle the meaning. Episode 275 and 276 and others around it, will give you a better understanding of this issue. Prescription: · This pattern may be a verbal rut that you've got into (perhaps initially through nerves), and then has become a habit. Aircheck yourself regularly to hear how you really sound.· If working from a script, check to see how it is written and laid out. Consecutive sentences which are of similar length and construction, perhaps with a single-syllable word at the end, often leads to a repetitive rhythm. There's an example of this in the episode and show notes for 171. Simply re-writing them and then marking up the meaning-full words, can make a big difference to presentation. Hosted on Acast. Some old demos I used to try to get new radio work back in 1999. Contains airchecks and voiceover/commercial production work from KAVS-FM/Lancaster CA and KCXX-FM Riverside CA. Most material seems to be from between 1996 and 1999. Helped me get a job in LA. Been there since 1999, despite the quality of these demos.
As we take an extremely short break between Seasons Two and Three, we thought it might be nice to share the VERY FIRST Hawk! In November 2020, Jason Gore tweeted that if Joe Biden won Georgia, he would do record a classic rock radio shift like he was still working at 96rock in Atlanta - the last classic rock station he worked at. After some thought, he decided to do it as 108.9 The Hawk, a classic rock station he mentioned in one of his sketches in his one-man show, "Jason Gore's Midlife Crisis." Jason asked Geoff if he wanted to be part of it and 108.9 The Hawk was born! Spotify had a new feature that allowed you to do breaks in-between full songs, so at first, this is what we thought The Hawk would be, but only Spotify subscribers would be able to listen. We did two episodes like this - this one and the first HAWKMAS episode with Alex Scordelis. Later on in 2021, Jason and Geoff decided they wanted to make the Hawk a weekly thing for everyone to hear and that's the moment THE TRUE MADNESS WAS BORN.We hope you enjoy this look back at the very first episode of The Hawk. 108.9 The Hawk Season Three begins next week. Get ready.

Doing a podcast review of your show is the best way for you to improve. Whether you review your own show or have someone else review it for you, nothing helps you get better than honestly assessing our progress in real time. Here are the links discussed in this episode: Oscar's Website: https://www.oscartrimboli.com Oscar's Books: Deep Listening: Impact beyond words How To Listen: Discover the hidden key to better communication Oscar's Podcast Episode: https://www.oscartrimboli.com/podcast/106/ Show Review Worksheet: www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/reviewworksheet Free podcast strategy session with Erik: PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply WHY WE REVIEW Reviewing your content on a regular basis is critical to your improvement. Learning how to critique yourself will help you sound more prepared, more organized and more like a true, professional broadcaster. When I was beginning my broadcasting career, I feared people would see me as someone simply trying to play the part of a professional. I didn't have any idea what I was doing, let alone how to get better. I wanted to have more credibility. How could I get there? Over the past 35 years, I learned to review and critique my own show. I worked with a variety of coaches, consultants, articles, conferences and mentors. They all taught me a little something. I have also been coaching radio talent with their shows. I have helped many radio shows reach the top of the ratings. My show has also been at the top for years. This is what I do for podcasters. This success is built on a quality review and critique of each show. When you learn to recognize the powerful parts of your episode, they will naturally become part of your content over time. I have developed a Show Review Worksheet to help you review your show. You can download the worksheet for free on my website at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/reviewworksheet. OSCAR TRIMBOLI REVIEW Oscar Trimboli is the host of the "Deep Listening Podcast". He teaches people how to be more effective with their listening. By getting dedicated to learning more and refining his content, he now not only has an incredible business doing what he loves, he now has an award winning show. Apple Podcasts named his show one of the Best Australian Podcasts of 2018 editorially selected by Apple. On this list are the likes of ABC National Radio, BuzzFeed and PodcastOne Australia. Oscar uses his podcast to showcase his authority and grow his business. His show has helped him land multiple speaking engagements and clients. As he grows his influence, Oscar is on a quest to create 100 million deep listeners in the world. Yes, 100 million. When setting goals, he takes it to a whole different level. Podcasting wasn't always part of the mix. Oscar's mentor told him the best platform to spread his message was to create a podcast. So, that's what he did. Many of us have no idea how to shape our content once our podcast has launched. Oscar would interview guests on his show. The guests would provide great content on each episode. However, there wasn't much of Oscar. The podcast was doing very little to build his authority. Oscar and I began working together to increase his visibility within his show. He now says the podcast increases the sharability of his message a thousand times. People who love his podcast actively share it. He has made the show a very powerful tool for his business. I had the chance to talk with Oscar about his success when he was on Episode 214. Today, I want to take you behind the scenes of our latest conversation and a complete review of one of his episode to help you improve. HIGHLIGHTS Here are the highlights of my conversation with Oscar Trimboli. Erik Question: Are we using this to gain clients? Oscar Answer: The Purpose of the show is hearing me on other podcasts and come to my show. For those who know me, continue the relationship. This feedback came across multiple years. I asked, "What is one thing you would change?" Most say, "I want to hear more from you and more from people like me." Q: What do you like and dislike about this new Q&A format of the show? A: I like that the audience voice is in the podcast. I like that listeners can listen to each other. It is a shared journey. The show gets more into very nitty gritty problems. The content is tangible. I dislike that I don't have a workflow. It is easy for the listener to share a problem. I also thought the back and forth really added to the episode. ERIK REVIEW The "answer" is a little long and detailed with a lot of "how" rather than a lot of "why" and a little "what". As a listener, I get a little lost with the reading. It lacks a little warmth and variation of engagement. The audio drops break it up and slow down momentum. The episode overall could benefit from more momentum and more questions with shorter answers. An opening will set up the episode for the listeners and welcome them to the show. Her question doesn't need an explaination. Just use the question to maintain momentum. There a nice reference to episode 67 at 2:00. You include a nice drop. It is a nice use of story and not too long. Also, nice use of her name coming out. Very 1:1. At 7:00 you say, "So, Shanie..." This makes it feel less like reading. You also "think" a second. There is use of another nice drop at 7:45. Another reference to a past episode. The drop is a little long. You can put it in context by jumping in a bit. The drop runs 7:45 to 9:38. He repeats himself a bit. At 9:45, this part sounds natural. It isn't a perfectly written sentence. It sounds like you've added your thoughts in real time. This adds authenticity with partial sentences. BREAK IT UP There is another solid drop at 11:40. This is a great example of putting it to use. However, it was very long. Not sure we needed all of it. This runs from 11:37-15:49. She talks about... A few things that have really worked for me Say no to almost everything There should be more discussion Had to learn to be disciplined around schedule Being intentional about what gives me energy 14:15 he comes in again Take a meeting for the wrong reason (decent example) You're not gonna make everyone happy This is simply too many topics for one drop. During that drop at 12:40, a second person comes in. You need to introduce him right after his first sentence to frame it. If he is the interviewer, replace with you. He talks about HR and restates what she says. This is not really adding anything. THE WRAP UP At 19:20 you say, "Your role as a speaker is not..." This is the "why" of much of the episode. Move this to the front of the episode. There is a wrap up at 19:45 with a nice update with what has happened since the interaction. At 20:40, you include a nice reaction and update from her. It feels like she is reading it rather than talking with emotion. The part of the answer at 22:04 is a good example of sounding stiff and read. There is no pause searching for the word. Her diction is almost too good. As part of her answer, she said, "What would be easy to implement." People don't add headlines to the answers. Pop in and asker her that question rather than having her add the headline. You have a nice call to action at 24:35. However, she comes back in at 25:40. You wrapped it up and put a bow on it. This felt like she restarted the conversation. Instead, move her big takeaway before you wrap up.Leave them with the call to action. Overall, the episode could be shorter and include a few questions to give listeners more of what they want. I attended college in northeastern Vermont from 1977-1981. One of the things I enjoyed was being a part of the college's radio station, WWLR-FM, then only ten watts (now it's broadcasting at 3,000 watts, an increase that happened shortly after I graduated). I was not new to the world of radio, however. My radio "career" started at age 15 when I started providing weekend weather forecasts on my hometown station in New Bedford, Massachusetts, 1420-AM, WBSM, something I did faithfully until I started college in September of 1977. One of my dearest "lifer friends," Bob Gilmore, is also a radiophile. You can read about him in my first book, The Extra Mile. Recently, he came across a radio air check of one of my Saturday afternoon radio shows on WWLR-FM. It's from October of 1980, during my senior year at Lyndon State College. Yes, that's OVER 40 years ago! Because it's Open Line Friday, I've decided to go rogue and share a "scoped*" version of my first hour of my shift, a radio program I called The Sound Connection. It naturally brought back a ton of memories for me. It's my hope you'll, at the very least, smile when you listen in. I'd love to know what you think. Brian Kelsey is a full-time voice-over artist. For the past 20 years, you've heard Brian's voice on CNN, MSNBC, The Howard Stern Show, MTV, VH-1, NBC, CBS, HGTV and so many others. In addition, Brian voices countless radio stations across the county, and a wide variety of commercials. Radio imaging, an audio book, a documentary, cartoon characters or 'movie trailer', know that Brian may be the voice on the microphone. Brian started as a radio host and voice actor, working in New York City radio on legendary stations such as Q-104.3/WAXQ-FM and 92.3 K-ROCK/WXRK-FM. It was at K-ROCK where Brian met Howard Stern and began working for him as a writer, producer and as the 'voice' of the Howard Stern Show. After years of voice-over's and creating ridiculous bits for Howard, the opportunity to work for Martha Stewart presented itself. Brian became the host of a 4 hour live talk show on Martha Stewart Living Radio, nationwide 5 days a week. During this time he started doing appearances on Martha's TV show demonstrating DIY projects. As a licensed contractor with extensive knowledge in this space the visibility led to appearances on The Today Show, HGTV, FOX, and eventually landed Brian a short run home renovation television show on NBC called 'Kelsey On The House'. All along the way he played the role of editor, cinematographer, producer and continued in the voice overs industry. Brian also started a YouTube channel centered around media & tv/podcast production. This led to building a ridiculous television talk show set in his garage and ultimately seeing who is brave enough to stop by.Part 3 of 4 has Brian revealing his love for one WKRP in Cincinnati character that did it for him. Brian also takes us to when he first started in Radio back in 1992, and how he joined two legendary New York City radio stations at points of format changes, just three years apart from each other. Steve Craig is the morning host on Atlanta's 97.1 The River/WSRV-FM. Steve has been holding down mornings since 2012. His passion for the music and his listeners shines through the speakers every day. He describes it as being “like a bar conversation about the bands we love.”Atlanta was also Steve's home as the midday jock for 17 years on now-defunct 99X/WNNX-FM. During those years, alternative/modern rock was just starting to take hold of the music industry, and 99X was one of the Radio industry's flagship stations for delivering this fresh new sound to its listeners. As a beacon for the format, artists knew how important it was to get their music heard on 99X, and would often be interviewed on-air by Steve.
