In Episode Five, Dave Reis speaks with internationally renowned, award-winning jazz musician Greg Abate, a saxophonist, flutist, and composer. He's traveled the globe on his musical tours. After finishing his education at Berklee College Of Music in the mid-70s, Greg Abate went on to play lead alto saxophone for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. Abate formed his group Channel One in 1978. It became a New England favorite and offered him an opportunity to play tenor sax from 1986-87 with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under the leadership of Dick Johnson. He was recently ranked number three in the Downbeat reader's poll for alto sax. The Artist Index's jazz documentarian and Jazz Podcast Series host, Dave Reis, spent nearly 26 years as a Jazz radio show host, among his many other accomplishments. He was one of the original longtime DJs who worked at the former WUSM which became radio station WUMD, 89.3 FM, on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. Dave Reis, AKA David Domingo Reis, began as our guest on In-Focus Podcast 154. and In-Focus Podcast 181. He returns once again as the host of our first-ever ten-part jazz podcast series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center. There is no better host for this series than Dave Reis, a walking, talking jazz encyclopedia and local legend himself. Dave grew up surrounded by and hanging around with many of the jazz greats he will be presenting his ten-part Jazz Podcast Series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center. The Music of Kenny Barron. Y cerraremos de vuelta a nuestro Clásico de la Semana, el recuerdo al vibrafonista Khan Jamal.

June 23, 2015 Listen to the title track from Motif by the Greg Abate Quartet featuring Berklee faculty members Tim Ray, John Lockwood, and Mark Walker, out now on Whaling City Sound Records. After graduating Berklee, jazz saxophonist, flautist and composer Greg Abate '71 played lead alto in the Ray Charles Orchestra for two years in the early '70s. In 1978, he formed the group Channel One, and later played tenor sax in the Revived Artie Shaw Orchestra directed by Dick Johnson. Abate has since ventured out as a soloist and composer in post bop, Latin and modern styles, performing jazz festivals and clubs worldwide, and since 1991 has released over 16 albums. "Berklee gave me the musical tools and foundation to become a jazz artist and educator," said Abate, who is also an adjunct professor of jazz studies at Rhode Island College. The Greg Abate Quintet featuring Phil Woods Live At Chans, a double CD, will be released this fall from a concert at Chans in Rhode Island slated for October 3, and Abate is currently planning tours throughout the U.S. and U.K.
WKNC interviewed multi-saxophonist Greg Abate to discuss his career and most recent project with saxophonist Phil Woods, The Greg Abate Quintet featuring Phil Woods. Greg shared valuable information about his upbringing in music in the northeastern United States, his experiences performing internationally with feature bands including the Ray Charles Orchestra, and his time teaching students in Rhode Island. Ohio-based jazz vocalist Patricia Berg has spent the last decade performing in some of Dayton's most popular upscale restaurants and jazz venues. In February 2008, Patricia released Sweet Sorrow, her debut CD, on the local Hipgnosis record label, and will spend 2008 promoting it across the area. Sweet Sorrowassembled a host of the region's top jazz musicians, including Fenton Sparks, Brian Cashwell, Jim Leslie, Jeff Hufnagle, Marc Pequignot, Chris Slone, John Wesley Taylor, Rusty Burge, Tom Downs, Greg Dearth, Jim Masters, Tim Cummiskey, and Patricia's husband, bassist Christian Berg, as well as guest appearances by cellist Peter Thomas and Grammy-nominated saxophonist Greg Abate. Including five original songs written by Patricia and/or Chris, Sorrow was described by jazz writer Duante Beddingfield in the Dayton City Paper as "a warm, mellow, deeply intimate collection of reflective tunes" with "almost an aching softness...like being wrapped in a cashmere blanket on a cool summer evening."
