This week, we're putting away childish things... after we're done playing with them, of course, because we're knocking out the last of our toys-to-life games! After the wild success of SKYLANDERS, everyone wanted in on the plastic-figurine-as-game-pieces craze, and these two games are the most prominent rivals to Activision's pioneering series. Firstly, we're playing DISNEY INFINITY, which has the benefit of Disney's massive backlog of Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters to play with. Then, we're playing LEGO DIMENSIONS, which plumbs the multiverse for a wild array of characters and items that you'll actually build in real-life.  Hosted by Steve Guntli and Woody Ciskowski  Logo by Corinne Kempen  Theme song: "Truck" by The Octopus Project (theoctopusproject.com)  ultra64podcast.com  Twitter: @ultra64podcast  Email: ultra64podcast@gmail.com  Instagram: @ultra64podcast  Patreon: patreon.com/ultra64pod Next week's episode: Mario Kart 8

Ve li ricordate i toys-to-life? Although every part of a video game is indispensable, from storyline to animation, the looks are the first thing we get access to, even before seeing what the characters can do. That sounds like a lot of pressure for those creating the blueprints of how a game would look, doesn't it? Actually, concept artists, those in charge of designing those blueprints, love their job, and we have the pleasure to talk to one of them in today's episode: Christopher Hayes. Christopher Hayes is a concept artist; from his imagination and how his hands translate his thoughts into drawings is how some of the games we've spent hours playing look like. Currently working as a Senior UI Artist at Blizzard, he also worked at Epic Games as a Senior Artist and spent over 6 years at Blizzard as a 3-D Character Artist and Concept Artist. Christopher created weaponry, armor, and characters of World of Worldcraft, Hearthstone, and Disney Infinity. In this episode, we hear tons of incredible stories from Christopher about the characters he created, how fun it is to work at Blizzard, and his journey to becoming an artist. His father, a musician, and his mother, a painter, certainly encouraged him to work with art, while his grandfather would ask him if Blizzard was a good company to work in. We also talked about the projects he enjoyed the most working in, his and his kids' favorite games, and the things he prefers to design. Christopher also shared his thoughts on the importance of reading and constantly stimulating creativity, the tight connection between concept creation and storytelling, and much more. Tune in to Episode 15 of A Gamer's Story and join us on a journey into the depths of a creative mind. Some Questions I Ask:As a concept artist, how does a typical day at the office looks like? (1:24)Do you take inspiration from a specific artist or from several? (5:24)Hearthstone is a great game. What did you work on in that game? Any college degree can be helpful to get into the gaming industry; every professional will be handy in any gaming company. But to Erik Willis, the best thing those interested in creating a game can do is create a game themselves. We can find online and free the same tools triple-A studios use, Unreal Engine and Unity, for instance. He believes that it doesn't need to be a big game; it can be a simple one. But someone that can show they have what it needs to build a game from scratch has many chances of getting hired for a gaming company. Erik Willis is an Associate Producer at Funcom. He holds an A.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Central Community Piedmont College, a B.S. and B.A. in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and a Master's Degree in Arts, Entertainment and Media Management from the University of Utah. He worked on many cool projects like Disney Infinity, Looney Toons Dash, and he also worked at React Games on PC, Mobile, VR, and Console projects. In this episode, we discussed his role as a project manager in Funcom, what happens when a project goes beyond its budget, and how he manages to turn what game creatives think into what game developers create. We also talked about his favorite games and what project he enjoyed the most. He spoke about the massive importance of game testing and how boring and challenging it can be. He also shared his view on the future of VR, consoles, and the gaming industry as a whole. Tune in to find out what it means to create a video game from a producer's standpoint. Some Questions I Ask:Is it hard to stick to the original budget? Have you ever gone off the budget? (2:25)How do you start managing a team of artists to get everything done on time and on the budget? (6:25)What was your favorite game to playtest? (15:08)How did you get into this career of being a game producer? (17:17)Do you think that VR games will eventually replace console games? (33:35)In This Episode, You Will Learn:What happens when a game exceeds its budget (3:25)What is an Art Pipeline, and its role in the creation of a game (8:17)Why playtesting is so critical, and why most testers don't last long in their positions (16:21)The difference between being passionate to play videogames and being devoted to making them (21:52)Where Erik believes the gaming industry is heading (43:09)Resources:Funcom websiteConnect with Erik:LinkedInLet's Connect!InstagramTwitterYouTube Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Ladies and Gents how are you tonight?Streaming News Facebook Gaming will now allow partnered streamers to play copyrighted music This week  Facebook Gaming announced it is set to allow its partnered streamers to play copyrighted, popular music in the background of their live streams — which means they've seemingly solved the copyright problem that's plagued live-streaming (and basically the entire internet) since the beginning. In a press release, a spokesperson for Facebook Gaming put it like this: So, how's it work? Music played during a gaming broadcast must be a background element, not be the primary focus of the stream. For example, a streamer's voice and/or gameplay audio should be in the foreground. This also applies to clips made from a livestream, and the VOD version of livestreams, but does not extend to separately edited and uploaded VOD content.  the licenses Facebook has apparently negotiated do not include every track; some, mysteriously, are “restricted.” If streamers try to play those, they'll get a pop-up notifying them that the track they're playing isn't actually licensed for use on Facebook Gaming. Symphonic - This seems like a huge move by facebook to tap into Twitches growing command on streaming. What do you think Twitch will answer with? Twitch Removes Mid-Roll Ads After Negative Response  Twitch recently rolled out a new ad experiment where it placed mid-roll ads in people's streams. The ads would show up for some viewers during streams and would support the creators that people were watching, but the streamers themselves wouldn't have any control over the ads. The test went about as well as anyone would expect and has since ended with the mid-roll ads being removed from the streams in response to the negative feedback. They had this to say on twitter - Thank you for all of your feedback. We have completed the mid-roll ads test. Ads are an essential part of keeping Twitch freely available and we understand your concerns. We'll continue to work on ways to improve the viewer ad experience and give streamers more control. FullBump - Your thoughts on the ads and the backlash? AMC Networks & Twitch To Launch The Walking Dead Universe Live Streaming Channel  Expanding a hugely popular franchise, AMC Networks is launching a new channel on Twitch, The Walking Dead Universe, in partnership with the popular Amazon-owned live-streaming service. AMC said Thursday it will produce live original programming with fans able interact via Twitch, which started as a gaming platform but has expanded into all kinds of live streaming content with a strong social media component. TWDUniverse will start with around 12 hours of original content a week. “The Walking Dead has built one of the most passionate and engaged audiences on television, and we're thrilled to partner with AMC Networks to develop new ways for fans to experience this pop-culture phenomenon,” said Michael Aragon, SVP of Content at Twitch. “Today, television audiences want more from their viewing experience beyond the traditional 50-minute episode, and we're excited to partner with brands and networks in the future to expand this audience connection.” Stump - Its interesting they seem to be focusing on curated content. Would you like to see a channel that plays episodes 24/7?Gaming News Will the Xbox Series S hold back next-gen gaming? The biggest difference between the larger Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S, apart from the size and design, is the GPU inside. The Xbox Series S has 4 teraflops of GPU performance, compared to the 12.15 teraflops on the Xbox Series X. The smaller console also has less RAM (10GB instead of 16GB) that also runs slower than the Series X. Other than that, the Series S runs the same Series X CPU at a slightly slower speed, and has 512GB of SSD storage instead of 1TB. Some of the changes Microsoft has made to accommodate a cheaper Series S console have created a lot of debate around whether this console will hold back next-gen gaming in general. “Really bummed about this RAM situation on the Series S,” said Axel Gneiting, a principal engine programmer at id Software, in a now deleted tweet. “This isn't easy to compensate and drags down base spec quite a bit for next-gen multi platform.” Symphonic - Whats your take on MS choosing to, according to some, holding back next gen graphics and hardware? Hogwarts Legacy is an open world Harry Potter game coming to PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC Hogwarts Legacy is a new Harry Potter open world game releasing next year across all major platforms, Warner Bros. announced on Wednesday as part of Sony's PlayStation 5 price reveal live stream event. The game, developed by Disney Infinity developer Avalanche Software, is set in the 1800s at the iconic Hogwarts from the book series, but given its time period it will not involve playing as the series' titular character. In a press release, Warner Bros. describes the game as an “open-world, single-player, action role-playing video game set in the 1800s wizarding world,” where “players will experience life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry like never before, as they live the unwritten and embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world.” The release says players will “grow their magical abilities by mastering spells, brewing potions and taming fantastic beasts,” adding that the game will include familiar locations like the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village. FullBump - This is a huge game announcement for next gen platforms. Why do you think in a world of online play they opted for a single player open world? The end of the 3DS marks an inflection point for portable gaming  Nintendo seems to have halted production on all variations of the Nintendo 3DS, marking the first time since 2004 that Nintendo is not producing any dual-screen portable systems. Back in 2017, Nintendo said explicitly that the newly launched Nintendo Switch wouldn't replace the 3DS. Since then, the company has repeatedly reaffirmed that continued support, saying as recently as last November that the 3DS would be supported into 2020. For now, the Switch Lite keeps Nintendo involved in the production of dedicated portable gaming hardware, a space it has dominated in an unbroken line since the 1989 launch of the original Game Boy. Outside of Nintendo, though, portable gaming continues to be dominated by the tiny computers practically everyone carries around in their pockets. Symphonic - Do you think we will see game makers start to make higher tier games for mobile devices?Entertainment News CONSOLE WARS Doc Explores Sega and Nintendo's Epic Battle  When I was growing up you were either Team Sega Genesis or Team Super Nintendo. I was a Sega kid. Now did that mean SNES fans were my mortal enemy? Yes, of course. They still are and always will be. That's just how it worked. You had to pick a side in the first truly great video game fight. And the epic story of that Sonic versus Mario showdown will be told in the new documentary Console Wars, coming to CBS All Access this month. “Console Wars takes viewers back to 1990 when Sega, a fledgling arcade company, assembled a team of misfits to take on the greatest video game company in the world, Nintendo. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pit brother against brother, kids against grownups, Sonic against Mario, and uniquely American capitalism against centuries-old Japanese tradition. For the first time ever, the men and women who fought on the front lines for Sega and Nintendo discuss this battle that defined a generation.” FullBump - Which side were you on during the console wars? Ewan McGregor Gives Update on Disney+ OBI-WAN KENOBI Series We covered a bit about OBI Wan on past episodes but now Ewan McGregor has given us an update about the new show. So far, it appears that the Obi-Wan show is a “one and done” standalone season. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, McGregor said,”As I understand, it's a standalone season.” But he leaves open the possibility that there could be more when asked about a season two. “We'll see. Who knows?” It doesn't sound like he's permanently closing the book on Old Ben. As most Star Wars fans know, Lucasfilm originally conceived the Obi-Wan series as a feature film. But after Solo flopped at the box office, the studio decided to hold off on doing more standalone movies. Rumor has it that the Josh Trank Boba Fett movie simply morphed into The Mandalorian. And thus, the Obi-Wan movie became a series as well. Rumors became fact when Ewan McGregor finally confirmed the series on stage last summer at the D23 Expo. He even admitted he'd kept it a secret for nearly five years. Stump - its interesting to me that longer form entertainment like podcasts and series of shows seem to be replacing movies in the fandom sphere. What do you make of Disney opting to do tv instead of movies? Neil Patrick Harris Has Been Cast in THE MATRIX 4 — GeekTyrant  Neil Patrick Harris has officially joined that cast of director Lana Wachowski's The Matrix 4. There's no word on who he'll be playing, but it will be a main role. He will join the previously cast Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be reprising their roles of Neo and Trinity in the film. Yahya Abdul-Mateen (Aquaman) was also recently cast in the movie and he's rumored to be playing a younger version of Morpheus. Symphonic - With the news of Barney Stinson himself joining Matrix 4 it would seem that the movie will be….Wait for it….Legendary. What are your thoughts?BOLD PREDICTIONS  NPH will be the new face of the matrix I dont know id this pandemic will ever end but There will be a massive announcement in the field of medicine  about a successful new treatment regime in the next year for cancer most likely but for sure something that effects end of life more than beginning. I dont know why the next major lose will be but Betty white will make 100. News: This weekend was Labor Day in the US, and Downtown Disney was very busy. The limitations on guests in the shopping district were upheld, but this lead to long, physically distant, lines in the parking lot before the security tents to get into the area. Disneyland’s social media accounts were keeping guests informed of parking limitations throughout the weekend. – https://www.micechat.com/269469-disneyland-update-and-the-winner-is/ and https://www.mouseplanet.com/12746/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_September_7__13_2020#news1 Handheld folding fans have appeared at the resort and just in time for the massive heat wave that has been happening in California. There are a lot of fun options to choose from. Dr. Facilier sports the word “Shade” on his, The Evil Queen has “Queen” displayed, there is a plain Disneyland fan that has the retro-multi-colored text on it, an Orange Bird fan that is more of an icon out in Florida, and finally a Hei Hei fan that has the lovable chicken and his name. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/09/photos-three-new-folding-fans-featuring-dr-facilier-the-evil-queen-and-a-rainbow-disneyland-resort-logo/ Since our eipsode last week, new pictures of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway construction have been posted online. The building’s vertical construction seems to be going up at a rapid pace. At this rate, 2023 seems just around the corner! – https://www.micechat.com/269469-disneyland-update-and-the-winner-is/ New 65th Anniversary collection Funko POP! figures have appeared on for Amazon.com for sale. Peter Pan riding in a pirate ship, Minnie riding in a Dumbo vehicle, Mr. Toad riding in a Toad car, and a stand alone Mr. Toad with hypnotic eyes are available. Each figure runs $29.99, except for the stand alone Mr. Toad, which is $10.99. As of writing of the podcast, all of the figures are listed as “currently unavailable”. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/09/shop-disneyland-65th-anniversary-funko-pop-vinyl-figures-ride-vehicles-for-peter-pans-flight-mr-toads-wild-ride-and-more-now-available-online/ Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom stated during a press conference that the state is “making a llot of progress” on the guidelines for reopening the theme parks around the state. Newsome followed up by saying that there were still some details to work out, but as soon as they were at a point to comment, they would. – https://www.ocregister.com/2020/09/02/newsom-california-making-a-lot-of-progress-toward-reopening-theme-parks/ This Tuesday, Cast Members were spotted in front of Disneyland installing signage related to COVID-19 changes in the parks. Some have said that the parks could be opening at any time, but until there is any offical word, we can’t say anything for sure. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/09/photos-disneyland-and-disney-california-adventure-prepare-for-imminent-reopening-with-new-health-safety-signage-at-park-entrances/ Also on Tuesday, Orange County, where the Disneyland Resort is located got out of the purple level and has entered the red level. The red level is the second most restrictive, but allows indoor restaurants, and movie theaters at 25%, and indoor shopping at 50%. This could mean that indoor shops and restaurants at Downtown Disney could be just around the corner. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/09/08/could-we-see-indoor-dining-resume-in-downtown-disney-soon-heres-what-we-know/ Discussion Topic: Platform: Disneyland Adventures – https://www.amazon.com/Disneyland-Adventures-Xbox-One/dp/B075YLGWDY/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Disneyland+adventures&qid=1599660243&sr=8-1 Infinity – https://www.amazon.com/Disney-Infinity-3-0-Starter-Pack-Xbox/dp/B00WJ0Z17Q/ref=sr_1_1?crid=269EGFSH29CFJ&dchild=1&keywords=disney+infinity&qid=1599660298&sprefix=disney+infin%2Caps%2C216&sr=8-1 Kingdom Hearts – https://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Hearts-All-One-Package-PlayStation/dp/B084J45N4V/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1Y9SJZQW5AWS9&dchild=1&keywords=kingdom+hearts&qid=1599660317&sprefix=kingdom+%2Caps%2C201&sr=8-3 Lion King & Aladdin (NES) – https://www.amazon.com/Lion-King-Pc/dp/B00002SWBG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=lion+king+nes&qid=1599660343&sr=8-1 and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00002STX3/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=aladdin+nes&qid=1599660361&sr=8-1 Epic Mickey – https://www.amazon.com/Disney-Epic-Mickey-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B002I0GEXM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=epic+mickey&qid=1599660379&sr=8-1 Board: Villainous – https://www.amazon.com/Wonder-Forge-Disney-Villainous-Strategy/dp/B07DLGD9K6/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2ZZN6W0UH1DAS&dchild=1&keywords=villainous&qid=1599660411&sprefix=villain%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-1 Jungle Cruise – https://www.amazon.com/Ravensburger-Disney-Jungle-Cruise-Adventure/dp/B08412VYKZ/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=jungle+cruise&qid=1599660428&sr=8-2 Mobile: Heroes Battle Mode – https://lol.disney.com/games/disney-heroes-battle-mode Magic Kingdoms – https://www.disney-magic-kingdoms.com Emoji Blitz – https://lol.disney.com/games/disney-emoji-blitz Tides of War – https://lol.disney.com/games/pirates-of-the-caribbean-tides-of-war Appisodes – https://appsupport.disney.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037504052-All-Disney-Junior-Appisodes-have-been-retired Lego Star Wars – https://www.starwars.com/games-apps/lego-star-wars-battles-mobile Sorcerer’s Arena – https://www.sorcerersarena.com Non-Disney: SWGOH – https://www.ea.com/games/starwars/galaxy-of-heroes MSF – https://www.marvelstrikeforce.com/en Marvel Avengers – https://avengers.square-enix-games.com/en-us/

Over the past five plus years of doing running DisKingdom, we've reached a point where things need a refresh, I need to sit back, take out some time out to look at what's working, what isn't and find a new clearer idea of what DisKingdom should be.  Back in 2014, we started off with the idea that we would cover everything "Disney", but it just was too much, resulting in the site narrowing down to covering collectibles and merchandise.  But trends have changed, we've seen Vinylmation, Disney Infinity, Tsum Tsum's, Ufufy's, Dorbz, multiple mobile games plus many other products come and go, along with physical media giving way to more digital products. The website is still going to be updated regularly during the process, but in the mean time, I'm going to be putting the DisKingdom Podcast on Hiatus, this will also include any new videos going onto the YouTube channel.  Since July, our YouTube channel, along with many others, saw its traffic drop 99% and with new rules coming into place in January, this has made making videos etc almost impossible to justify. Luckily the audio version of the podcast continues to be popular, but to do it justice, I need some time to reevaluate what DisKingdom is going to be and where its future lies.  In this podcast episode, I do share my thoughts on the current state of collectibles, my own personal issues that have effected my personal collecting and why I feel its time to stop, take a break and work out what to do next. The site/podcast isn't going anywhere, but sometimes taking stock and coming up with a new plan is needed.
