Hmm lecker lecker!
In this second half of my conversation with Alexander Marino, Director of U.S. Tax Law at Moody's Tax, we get into the nitty-gritty of what it really means to exit the U.S. tax system, whether you're renouncing citizenship or handing back a long-term green card. This is one of those areas where emotion, tax policy, and real-life consequences all collide. Alex explains the U.S. exit tax (and how to avoid it), what being a “covered expatriate” actually means, and why some clients are better off paying millions in exit tax now rather than tens of millions in estate tax later. We also discuss some common myths like assuming a high-tax country means you're covered, or thinking a long-expired green card means you're off the hook. The key thing to note here is: this isn't about being dramatic. For many U.S. expats living in Ireland or abroad, stepping away from the U.S. tax net is a practical financial decision—but it has to be done right. Alex shares how his team helps people navigate this process and why now might be the best window in history for high-net-worth individuals to consider it.If you're feeling stuck or unsure about your U.S. status, don't put it in the “too hard” basket. As always, professional advice is essential but hopefully this episode gives you a strong foundation to start asking the right questions. This is Part 2 of a two-part conversation with Alexander Marino. For Part 1, make sure you subscribed to the podcast.Main Topics discussed in this Episode:Understanding the U.S. Exit Tax: We unpack how the U.S. exit tax works and why avoiding it comes down to good planning, not good luck.Covered Expatriate Rules: Alex explains what makes someone a “covered expatriate” and the costly consequences that can follow.Green Card Holders Are Not Off the Hook: Letting a green card expire doesn't end your U.S. tax obligations—many are surprised to learn they're still on the hook. When Tax Treaties Don't Protect You: Tax treaties help avoid double tax, but they offer no protection when only the U.S. taxes an event. Why Now May Be the Smartest Time to Act: Current exemption levels make this an unusually favourable moment to plan an exit from the U.S. tax system.Get in touch with Alex Marino:Email: amarino@moodystax.comWebsite: https://moodysprivateclient.com/team/marino-alexander/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexander-marino-45a76b26/*****If you loved this episode or have a similar story, we'd love to hear from you! The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
In a follow-up to previous episodes on expat ‘Merit Badges,' Greg and Ed discuss ‘DEmerit Badges,' mistakes that long term expats make that they should NOT make. In other words, if you've lived in Thailand for a while, and you act like a n00b, you deserve a demerit. Greg begins with the classic fashion faux-pas of all foreigners in Thailand for more than a few months: wearing elephant pants. As the official mark of being brand new to Thailand, these flimsy pajama bottoms are verboten for long-timers (and that's still true, notwithstanding their surge in popularity among hi-so Thais). Ed then brings up raising your voice or getting angry in public with a Thai person in their official capacity. Simply put, anger in public gets you nothing in Thai culture, except possibly some disrespect. The guys continue running through several more no-no's for expats and repeat tourists, from forgetting your passport to bum gun blunders. If you don't want to embarrass yourself, listen in for advice on how to look like you belong in Thailand. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.
In this conversation, Kalie and Rafael discuss the current state of the housing market in Portugal, focusing on the stability of prices and the active nature of the market. They delve into the favorable interest rates for mortgages, explaining the different options available to buyers. Rafael outlines the mortgage process, emphasizing the importance of pre-approval and the necessary documentation. The discussion also covers practical advice for prospective homebuyers, including understanding additional costs and the benefits of working with a mortgage broker. Finally, they touch on future considerations for property investment in Portugal, especially for those looking to retire or invest from abroad.

In this insightful episode of Nomadic Diaries, host Doreen Cumberford sits down with Lucyna Bolin, a seasoned expat coach, marathon runner, and mother of two, to discuss the realities behind the polished exterior of expatriate life. Lucy discusses how success abroad doesn't always equal happiness. This is the paradox of the high-achieving expat. Key Topics & Highlights:Lucy's Expat Journey:Lucy recounts how a one-year stay in the US turned into a 20-year global adventure, finally repatriating to Poland with her family. She discusses the challenges and surprises of returning "home".Run for Mental Health:Lucy talks about her upcoming marathon in support of the charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), underlining the importance of mental health awareness among expats and high-achievers.The Hidden Struggles of Expats:Despite enviable lives showcased on social media, expats often face isolation, difficulty finding genuine connections, struggles with identity, sleep, work-life balance, and unspoken mental health challenges.Expectations and Vulnerability:High-achieving expats may feel pressure to manage everything themselves, leading to a reluctance to seek help and increased disconnection from loved ones both locally and back home.Building Authentic Connections:Lucy offers practical advice for intentionally and strategically building a support network as an expat—whether through hobbies, spontaneous connections, or structured meetups—and shares touching personal anecdotes.Confidence and Adaptation:The expat journey can shake one's confidence as cultural expectations shift. Lucy explains the need to recalibrate self-image and embrace a new way of being confident in unfamiliar settings.Types of Expats & Their Unique Challenges:Lucy identifies four expat archetypes—those preparing to move, first-timers in the honeymoon phase, repeat movers, and long-term nomads or repatriates. She encourages self-compassion and embracing the trade-offs of global living. The Importance of Community:Well-being and thriving abroad hinge on understanding and nurturing the right kind of social connections for individual needs, from deep friendships to activity-specific groups.Holistic Coaching Approach:Lucy describes her coaching framework, utilizing the "Wheel of Life" to address eight interconnected areas: career, family/friends, finances, hobbies/recreation, environment, personal development, health, and significant relationships.Memorable Quotes“Once an expat, always an expat.” - Lucyna Bolin“Living abroad is a trade-off. Patrick Bet-David covers how rising costs in the U.S. are causing Americans to seek out a new expat life in places like Spain and Mexico, but this is leading to friction. Locals feel priced out of their own communities as expat vs immigrant tensions rise, impacting the housing market. One solution is frugal living but others feel that is not enough. The video highlights these complex issues.

Summary In this episode, Adam shares his unique journey as an expat entrepreneur, discussing his investment strategies, asset allocation, and the importance of maintaining liquidity in his financial portfolio. He has a net worth of $10+ million with most of it in his business. He reflects on the challenges and rewards of running a business, the significance of cash management, and the lessons learned from navigating investments in various countries. Adam emphasizes the value of experiences over material possessions and the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences. He concludes with insights on entrepreneurship and the realities of growth in business. Takeaways Adam has lived overseas for 14 years, gaining a unique perspective on wealth. He focuses on helping expats and high-net-worth individuals with investments and wealth protection. His net worth is in the eight-figure range, primarily in company valuations and liquid assets. Adam prefers liquid assets over real estate due to tax disadvantages abroad. He believes cash should be seen as an opportunity for acquisitions rather than a long-term hold. Having cash on hand is crucial for business owners to seize unexpected opportunities. Investment strategies should adapt to changing economic conditions and personal circumstances. Travel and experiences provide lasting value compared to material possessions. Surrounding oneself with positive influences is essential for personal and professional growth. Entrepreneurship often requires patience and resilience, with success not always being linear.
