Vice recently released a ten episode docuseries delving into the outrageous world of reality television and the shows that redefined entertainment in the 21st century and of course Aidan and Noah had to watch and give their thoughts. They get into what information was new and particularly shocking, what specific rumors got clarified and which show seemed to have the most evil producers. It certainly is worth the watch and comes recommended by both hosts. The series covered in the documentary are The Swan, Kid Nation, Joe Millionaire, The Surreal Life, Hell's Kitchen, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Survivor, Real Housewives, Toddlers & Tiaras and America's Next Top Model. It's the end of Silver Surfer and we feel fine. Chris Hayner is with us to both turn back time and look forward into the unlikely Season 2 of this show that did exactly what it set out to do without ever actually being for anyone. Fare thee well, Norrin Radd. We hardly knew ye, even though ye would never shut up about yourself.

Would you take a bunch of kids from their homes, deny all contact with family, and see if they could survive on their in a New Mexico ghost town? You would if you were a CBS TV executive and had no moral compass. But then we wouldn't have had the sh*tshow that was "Kid Nation."
Negative portrayals left kids like Olivia traumatized whereas others, like Laurel and Anjay look back with fondness. How did being on the show affect the trajectory of the pioneers? And why does Kid Nation continue to strike a cultural chord? For ad-free listening to Split Screen: Kid Nation episodes, subscribe to CBC's Stories channel here.
After the chaos of the first few weeks life in Bonanza City stabilizes – but that doesn't make for great TV. The former pioneers say that as the show wore on, the drama became more contrived, with plot-lines that saw kids portrayed as gambling addicts and anarchists, looting the town stores. It leaves us wondering whether Kid Nation could ever have lived up to its utopian premise? How do the former pioneers feel about it now?For early access to Split Screen: Kid Nation episodes and to listen ad-free, subscribe to CBC's Stories channel here.
Katie and special guest/sister-in-spirit Julie re-watch the movie that scared us all as kids: Children of the Corn! It's a movie all about how if you're dating a jerk named Burt, you will absolutely end up choosing to deal with the Kid Nation corn cult kids instead. Come along as we meet those little rapscallions who all agreed to murder their elders so they could worship corn! The children are led by Isaac, a guy with a wicked hat who would steal the show on an Andy Cohen reunion show. His right hand child/man is Malachai, a guy who is definitely over 19 but all the other kids seem to have just let that slide cause well, he's the tallest. When Vicky and Burt, a couple with no self-preservation skills, head into town the corn kids get their world rocked and their religion burned to the ground - literally! We've got death, cults, psychic children, and corn... Lots and lots of corn. Released in 1984, it was based on a short story (yeah we could tell) by horror master himself: Stephen King!
This week on Podcast Playlist, Leah is joined by Josh Gwynn, host of the new CBC podcast Split Screen: Kid Nation. The podcast revisits the 2007 reality TV show Kid Nation, where 40 children were left in the desert to fend for themselves for more than a month. Through interviews with former contestants, producers and parents, Josh tries to piece together how this show actually got made, and what impact it had on those kids now that they're all grown up. We'll hear from Josh about that show's legacy. Plus, we'll listen to some of his favourite podcasts. The controversial reality TV show known as ‘Kid Nation', which borrowed its premise from Lord of the Flies, was cancelled shortly after its 2007 debut. Producers took 40 kids into a makeshift desert town to fend for themselves and create their own society. Was the series an opportunity to discover what kids are capable of? Or simply a ploy for ratings? With access to former ‘Kid Nation' contestants, their families, and the show's creators, culture journalist Josh Gwynn uncovers how this cult TV show became a lightning rod for an ongoing debate about the ethics of reality TV. Welcome to Split Screen, an examination of the utterly captivating, sometimes unsettling world of entertainment and pop culture. From reality TV gone awry, to the cult of celebrity, each season of Split Screen takes listeners on an evocative journey inside the world of showbiz. Ex-contestants, producers, and cultural critics uncover complicated truths behind TV's carefully curated facades, and question what our entertainment reveals about us. TW: child abuse, murder, sexual assault, poisoning, execution Hi Weirdos! Welcome back to Keep It Weird, the podcast for all things strange & unusual! As with our last episode, there is no video for this episode WOMP WOMP our bad but have no fear!! Videos will be back in episode 3. THIS WEEK HOWEVER, Episode 2 of Season 8, we are getting pretty dark. Usually we like to balance out the darkness with the light (as above, so below - praise Baphomet) but hey sometimes it doesn't work out that way. Lauren is starting us out with a new segment called REALITY TV CORNER and is introducing us to some REALLY messed up reality tv shows that, not surprisingly, did not make it further than a season or two. THE SWAN on Fox wherein "ugly" women were given full plastic surgery makeovers to win a chance to compete in a beauty pageant and KID NATION on CBS which should have just been called "Child Endangerment: The Series." Then Ashley takes the lead to teach us about a man named Jolly who was not very Jolly at all. Louis Joyland West has some of the clearest and most nefarious connections of ANY scientist to the CIA's top secret (now declassified) program MK ULTRA (1953-1973) and one event he is connected to is so horrific... so monstrous... and so suspicious that you will struggle to believe it.
