Every time a new media platform comes along, politicians work to master it.  In a bid to win over younger voters, both US presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have made a series of unorthodox campaign stops in the final stretch of the 2024 White House race: podcasts. So, how impactful are podcasts compared with other forms of communication? And do these newer modes of media allow voters to peel the external layers off politicians to better understand them as a person? On this episode of Morning Shot, Lea Redfern, Lecturer, Discipline of Media and Communications, University of Sydney and Andy Whitehouse, Senior Partner & Managing Partner at Penta Group, and Assistant Professor teaching political communications at Columbia University share their perspectives. Alerts are not foolproof however. In January, Hawaii's emergency management agency mistakenly sent out an alert warning of a ballistic missile threat to more than a million cellphones. Mistakes like that could make people nervous about this new nationwide alert. "The fact that you can't turn this alert off, that it will be something that will arrive on your phone whether you like it or not, I think was perhaps upsetting and concerning to some people," said Andy Whitehouse, who teaches communications at Columbia University. Three New Yorkers filed a federal lawsuit last week attempting to block the test, saying it violates free speech and is an unconstitutional seizure of electronic devices. The test will set off the same loud sound used for other alerts. If your cell is on and you have service, you will likely receive it and cannot stop it. Amazon said the move will benefit more than 350,000 workers, including full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal positions. Employees at Whole Foods, the upscale grocery chain Amazon owns, will get the same raise. Hourly employees who already make $15 per hour will also see a wage increase, the Seattle company said. (Workers in Britain will also get a raise.) Current pay for warehouse workers at Amazon is at least $12.25 an hour in Omaha, Nebraska, $13 in Baltimore and $16.50 in New York, according to recent job postings.

This time around we have Don Oliver & Bryan Ducker. I have known these two singers for around 28 years, listening to them in various pubs and folk clubs around Sheffield and I thought it was time to dig a little deeper and find out who they are and from what background they came. What a surprise I got! Turns out we are almost related! Have a good laugh and a good listen to Don & Bryan. Many thanks as always to Andy Whitehouse for the loan of his track, Almost Home, for our intro/outro.

No. 2, An interview with the fabulous Andy Whitehouse, is a welcome addition to my 'Kelham Island Discs' podcasts. For those who don't know, Kelham Island was once at the industrial Heart of Sheffield. The steel production and casting took place down the East End where Hitler failed to bomb them, preferring our town centre instead. I don't know why he did that, the pubs weren't that bad... But the Kelham Island area was the Heart of the engineering section, where the raw steel was actually made into something useful that we could throw back at Hitler! Nowadays, the factories are becoming up-market apartments for overpaid hamsters and students with well-off parents, but having said that, the pubs around there are certainly springing back to life. Not least 'The Gardeners Rest' on Neepsend Lane... of which I own a share! Go and buy beer! Make me rich!
