Thank you for joining us today! We will be reading from Luke 10:25-37 and hearing from Pastor Peter Little about the Art of Neighboring. We're glad you're here!
Is busyness subtly drowning out your ability to love God and love others? When we're constantly rushing from one task to the next, we lose the time and mental space to notice the needs of those around us, let alone build meaningful relationships with them. Our hurried lifestyles often turn our homes into mere refuges from the chaos instead of places of true connection and community. Today's guest, Dave Runyon, author of The Art of Neighboring (https://www.amazon.com/Art-Neighboring-Building-Genuine-Relationships/dp/080101459X), shares how simple acts of loving and connecting with our neighbors can create a profound social safety net – stronger than governmental programs – and foster a deeper sense of community. [01:59] Dave's Journey to Ministry [10:29] The Power of Neighboring [15:47] Practical Steps to Neighboring [22:10] The Impact of Neighboring [26:14] Spiritual Conversations Without Pressure [28:54] Challenges and Realities of Neighboring [30:56] The Importance of Mildly Awkward Moments [32:07] Taking the Great Commandment Seriously [32:51] Navigating Awkward and Dangerous Situations [36:02] The Art of Receiving from Neighbors [39:04] Evangelization and Genuine Neighboring Also, check out Dave's website, ArtOfNeighboring.com (https://www.artofneighboring.com/). Episode 125 - G.K. Chesterton once wrote, "We make our friends; we make our enemies; but God makes our neighbor." It can be the hardest thing, can't it, to see--to really notice--the people who live in our most direct proximity? For all the "connectedness" that we presume to possess through things like social media, there's something too often lacking in our person-to-person neighborliness these days. And that's not just a shame, it's a failure to heed a Gospel admonition.Chad sings a familiar little ditty as the lead vocals on this episode, while Ben stares smilingly ahead as co-host, humming along and changing out his jacket and shoes during the long (12 mins), opening banter. The two contemplate the care demanded of Christians toward the people God's placed right next door us. Who's the mystery neighbor that's given Chad and his family a schooling in the art of proper neighboring? Are there things about our current cultural condition that make being a good neighbor more challenging? And how can men lead the charge to reignite a neighborly spirit in our respective communities?SHOW NOTES:Mister Rogers Documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEYI4UJMcc4Full Length Chesterton quote: https://www.breakpoint.org/chesterton-on-loving-neighbors/
In a culture drowning in isolation and steeped in division, neighboring may be one of the most healing and hope-filled practices we can offer the world.
