We are "de-Cathinated" (but definitely not decaffeinated) for this BONUS episode. Ben is joined by three of his pastor friends (Adam Poe, Phil Bange, and Justin Monfort), all from local churches of different Protestant denominations, to discuss this episode's title question. While we will be without the Catholic Chadder, these dynamic men are poised to deliver some absolutely great insights. In true Man Talk fashion, there's a four-way free-flowing discussion throughout; as the conversation draws down, each co-host gives their final weigh-in. The four co-hosts discuss how to effectively minister in our homes and in society, and how to reach our youth for Christ and the role technology plays in that effort. Beacons of Light, implemented in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in July of 2022, is anattempt to address difficult realities facing Catholics, realities like declining Massattendance and growing priest shortages. A consolidation of parish churches intogroupings called “Families” has ensued with the hope that shared resources mightenable Catholics to move "from a mindset of maintenance to a mindset of mission."Despite its good intentions and its arguably necessary measures, Beacons has provendisruptive and often trying for many of the lay faithful.Chad takes this BONUS opportunity to bring in three Mighty Catholic laymen (John Paul Slonkosky, Nick Rentz, and Jared Pottkotter), for a 4-mic Man-Talk, to discuss this episode's title question. The four of them roundtable the challenges, the realizations, and the divisions brought on by Beacons. What has been the experience of Beacons “on the ground” by the average Catholic? How much of the difficulties during these first two years of Beacons has to do with parish consolidations, and how much has to do with younger priests moving toward more traditional liturgical celebrations? What is the future of Catholicism in Cincinnati, and (at the episode's end) what advice would these four men give to lay men and women as we move forward together?SHOW NOTES:Beacons of Light Parish Families - Archdiocese of Cincinnati (catholicaoc.org)
Episode 138 - It's the last hurrah here on the Manhood Restored podcast! Two and half years of weekly episodes add up to 150 (counting BONUSES!), and we find ourselves having one last mighty conversation. Ben and Chad could think of no better way to sign off than to interact with questions from you, Dear Listener. We sincerely THANK YOU for coming along with us on this project - it's been a blast! Plug 'em in and pass 'em around - the microphones, that is! Four microphones to be exact. And four men, for the last MAN TALK, convene a roundtable on this crucial leading question. Two hosts and two guest hosts have a very timely and important conversation. A really great conversation. A beautiful conversation. By the end, each man reveals how he'll be voting in the 2024 --okay, not really. But they do each finally give their conclusion on the question at hand. (Feel free to weigh in, dear listener, by emailing us at mightymen@manhoodrestored.tv)Craig Flack and Andy Muhlenkamp are two very thoughtful and mighty men. They join Ben and Chad to add some healthy balance to this ("HUGE") politically charged topic. Craig is the Pastor at Celina First Church of God in Celina, Ohio; Andy is a member of the sure-to-be-renowned-someday local book club, the Blinklings. The four face the elephants (and donkeys) in the MR "studio". Which presidential option is more problematic for a Christian-in-good-conscience: Trump or Biden? Do the various elements at play in today's political landscape make it uniquely difficult for a Chrisitian to stay faithful in his beliefs AND be engaged in the political process? And how can a man's core identity be a key to whether or not he's voting faithfully on any given issue or for any particular candidate?
Episode 136 - We've established that feminism has a fatal foothold in all sorts of cultural and societal institutions - it's made schooling anti-boy; it's made dating and marriage miserable for many--men and women alike; it's turned our storytelling into unrealistic propaganda; it's opened the floodgates for every form of gender confusion under the sun. But is it possible that it's also managed to emasculate our theology? Ben does the opposite of smooth things over in this, his last lead episode--that is, he just makes more waves (and too many puns), while Chad carries a memorable tune as co-host in this "fruity" episode. The two toss around the novel notion that the Holy Spirit animates men and women differently. How might "fruits" of the Spirit like peace and love take on a uniquely masculine character? What would cause or motivate someone to "read feminism into" the Scriptures? And what are examples of how the manly bearing of spiritual fruit can benefit the home, the church, and the culture at large?SHOW NOTES:Chad's song reference: Slugs & Bugs – Slugs and BugsBen's devotional book reference- Abiding in Christ- Andrew MurrayBen's Biblical passages referenced:Fruit of the Spirit - Galatians 5:22 NIV - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, - Bible GatewayPaul's spiritually manly appeal: 2 Timothy 1:6-14 NIV - Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the - Bible Gateway
Episode 135 -One hundred and thirty-five episodes in and the core message of this podcast remains the same: Men—MIGHTY MEN—are the solution to the problems besetting western society today. What kind of men in particular? What makes a man mighty and how can he become fit for the task of righting the ship? Piece by piece, that is the puzzle we've been putting together at the Manhood Restored podcast. This episode puts a frame around that puzzle's final, integrated picture.Chad takes the mound in the final game of this seven-game “series” of an episode, while Ben waits in the bullpen for the call to close as the “wild” card co-host. The two take a step back and marvel at the manly picture that's materialized over the course of two years of recording. Which of Chad's “man” episodes have come together to form a helpful road map to Mighty Mandom? What does it mean to be an Integrated Man? And what are some saintly and biblical examples of men who fit the Integrated-Man mold?SHOW NOTES:Chad's Challenge movie: A Man for All Seasons (1966) - IMDb
Episode 134 - We have "grilled" each other on our differences, come together on the ways we agree, and debated big topics like salvation. Now with the end of our conversations drawing near, we couldn't conclude the podcast without one last Catholic vs. Protestant debate! Ben , professing to be the titleholder, heard a challenge in a recent Man Talk episode and can't resist leading the protest; Chad, relishing the role of "underdog", is all too happy to oblige as contender and co-host! The two turn inward again to talk on a major point of departure between Catholics & Protestants: the sacraments. Ben pushes back strongly against the need for the priesthood in administering grace. Chad appeals to the necessity of form and ritual in worship and prayer - regardless of denomination. They seek understanding and clarification by: going to the Bible (Chad, believe it or not!); telling about their own recent experiences (Ben's got an interesting one!); and both expressing their own deep-seeded sensibilities of how to relate to God.
Episode 133 - The trends in survey data on friendship are indicating steep declines in recent decades - in both friendship quality and quantity. That trend, it's popularly believed, has most especially affected men. One 2021 survey found that men with at least six "close friends" has dropped from 55 percent to 27 percent since1990! How can that be in a society that purports to be so "social" and "connected"? Oh, the irony!Chad's parades as the Grand Poohbah in this secret man club of an episode, while Ben gets a co-host's initiation, coughing through the club's cloud of cigar smoke as he tries to perfect the Manhood Restored secret handshake. The two friends puzzle over the recent friendship trends and reflect on the value of friendship. What could be the contributing factors to such sharp declines in friendship among men? How important are friendships to men, especially given the time and energy required to maintain them? Episode 132 - It's been a long many years since the tectonic times of the Seneca Falls Convention; the societal fracture left at its feminist epicenter has widened into a canyon-sized divide between the sexes. The tremors of nearly 200 years of feminism have been felt by nearly every corner of our society. Its harmful effects are found in culture, education, economics, sexuality. Even Christian institutions have been far from immune. That's including the institution of marriage.Ben calls up his inner Anchorman for this magnum opus of an episode, while Chad chases the storm stirred up therein as co-host. The two batten down the hatches for a headlong dive into the whipping winds of a "Her-ricane". How would one accurately define Feminism as a cultural phenomenon from the Manhood Restored perspective? What are some ways in which feminism has found its way into Christian households and Christian Marriages? How can men and women begin to reverse its negative effects, and could the solution have anything to do with the A-Word? Episode 131 - *LISTEN IN FOR A MANHOOD RESTORED SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT*Parents and grandparents passing along hard-earned wisdom to the next generation is probably most often accomplished through oral storytelling, impromtu lectures, and incidental conversation. But there's nothing like the written word (or a written-up podcast episode) to really focus and articulate the "the things you want them to know"; taking the time to think through what's worth sharing and putting those thoughts to paper, is a a great way of leaving behind your words even after you're gone.Chad busts out his "quill" and plays the sage for this personal letter of an episode, as Ben lingers around as co-host hoping an idea will light him up (because that's what Bens do best!). The two contemplate the "letter to my son" concept as Chad lays out six pieces of advice he wants to pass along to his children. Along with each six, he also gives real life examples of how the advice has helped him in his own life. Ben piggybacks off each idea and then adds his own elderly advice at the end. Episode 130 - Facing down a question of far-wielding proportions is yet again the task of this MAN TALK episode, setting loose four men and four microphones on a topic that requires substantial time to work out. Hosts and Guest Hosts hash out this perennially debated question and aim at "solving the world's problems" in just over 90 minutes! The four will each give their final answers by episode's end. (What's your opinion, dear listener? Email us at mightymen@manhoodrestored.tv .)Pete Mustard and Josh Wendel coincidentally both have experience in the automotive industries; while that has absolutely nothing to do with this episode's topic, their common penchant for the peculiar does. Both fancying themselves as history nuts, they hope to help Ben and Chad ascend this Everest-like episode question. What are some of the unique factors faced by the modern world that could arguably sway one's opinion in either direction on this question? What's the best lens through which to filter out an answer to this question - religious/moral, human progress/advancement, wealth/prosperity? Was there a time in history, from a Christian's point of view, when humanity was most in harmony with God?
Episode 129 - A world where every temporal necessity is given and every environmental factor optimized is a world poised for flourishing. Plentiful food and drink. Adequate space and healthy conditions. Safety and comfort and communal harmony. You couldn't imagine a more perfect existence; it'd be a veritable Utopia. Except that there's no such thing. And that's a curious fact--for mice, and for men.Ben watermelons his way back to his junior high days and channels his inner Vanilla Ice as lead for this episode, while Chad busts out his sociological magnifying glass to offer his "illustrious" analysis as co-host. The two use the results of a mouse experiment from the '70s to springboard into a discussion about the perils of Progress. In what ways does mouse behavior in the "Universe 25" experiment mirror that of modern human society? What about material prosperity and relative societal safety makes us particularly susceptible to self-induced crisis? Episode 128 - Nobody likes being told a lie. That is, unless you agree up front to go along with the lie. Enter five foot-five, one-hundred- and fifteen-pound girl-boss action heroes. Enter Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson. Enter the Feminist Fatale.Chad classes up as a cruiserweight and takes his first official swing at feminism's fatal flaws, while his possibly-welter, but probably-super lightweight, co-host Ben Neff, loves to tap in. The two ring a bell that most likely cannot be un-rung by calling out the emperor's fantastically feminist clothes. Is it misogynistic to feel a little too faked-out when yet another pretty, petite female actress wins in a fist fight with a man more than twice her size? He also roasts beans under his own label, Old Hatch Coffee Roastery, supplying beans for other coffee shops. Jeff joins the podcast to discuss, debate, and otherwise educate listeners on what's arguably one of man's favorite drinks!Chad, the smooth-finishing Frenchman by heritage, is the frontline interviewer on this episode; Ben Neff helps navigate as the small-to-medium-bodied, (possibly) decaffeinated cohost. The two steep in the many fun facts their guest shares about coffee, while wishing they could be sipping on their subject matter (were it not for the late hour). What are the many ways one might make coffee, and what are the how's and why's behind each? What are some of Jeff's secret tips and tricks for maximizing the goodness of a cup of coffee (what to drink out of, what kind of water to use, what kind of milk to use, etc)? Episode 126 - Picture a roadside diner, a cozy spot with booths and tables for four. Inside the air is thick with grease and the smell of all-day coffee; there's the white-noise clatter of cooking and plates and silverware. Then notice the lunch patrons, some sitting together, others alone. The waitresses are taking orders, joking and smiling. It's a familiar scene all over America, a routine acted out by millions daily. And then, there in this diner, picture Ben sitting off at a table on his own - doing one of his favorite things.Ben is the adventurous social scientist analyzing the wildly commonplace for this episode, as Chad interprets the scene to see if he can cover Ben's claim to have a found a phenomenon worth capturing. The two ponder the potential significance of men taking meals in restaurants alone. What about the familiarity and routine of stopping at a diner to eat can be comforting and almost therapeutic? Is there anything superficial, or even sad, about men regularly taking lunch alone at a restaurant? How could the communal setting of a diner or coffee shop indicate a craving for connection for those who make a habit of going?
Episode 125 - G.K. Chesterton once wrote, "We make our friends; we make our enemies; but God makes our neighbor." It can be the hardest thing, can't it, to see--to really notice--the people who live in our most direct proximity? For all the "connectedness" that we presume to possess through things like social media, there's something too often lacking in our person-to-person neighborliness these days. And that's not just a shame, it's a failure to heed a Gospel admonition.Chad sings a familiar little ditty as the lead vocals on this episode, while Ben stares smilingly ahead as co-host, humming along and changing out his jacket and shoes during the long (12 mins), opening banter. The two contemplate the care demanded of Christians toward the people God's placed right next door us. Who's the mystery neighbor that's given Chad and his family a schooling in the art of proper neighboring? He also placed 2nd in the Nation at the 2023 National FFA Convention for Extemporaneous Public Speaking. Ben takes on the role of mastermind behind this "sneak attack" of an episode, while Chad tries to fly under the radar by drafting off their guest & fellow Falcon's soaring altitude. The two are determined to secret away the real answers to their "Should I Send My Kids to College" question from a real-life (and undercover) college student. What was Carter's journey of discernment that landed him at a 4-year university, and why did he think that it was the right path to success for him? Are there any ways in which Carter's upbringing and Christian faith have been tested while attending college? How is Carter's first year at college going, and how has his pro-active approach to getting involved on campus been a critical part of his early experience?
Episode 123 - Since legalizing sports betting in January of 2023, the gambling scene in Ohio is going full tilt! First there was Powerball and Mega Millions, then came the Casinos. Now on the scene is the likes of FanDuel and DraftKings. Gambling in Ohio is on the ascendency, and the sports betting variety is particularly popular with men (as high as 80% sports betting app users are men!). And something about the trend bothers Ben. Or does it?Ben, the consummate competitor and faithful fixer, is "all-in" as the lead for this episode, while Chad--Mr. Pennypincher himself--holds his cards close as co-host. The two wager their opinions on this growing phenomenon and try to tease out its proper place in the life of a Mighty Man of Valor. Episode 120 - A traditional liberal arts education is an endangered species of the Western world. In modern parlance, the phenomenon of "going to college" is what's accessible to our children post high school. While "going to college" can admittedly mean a of variety of things (technical schools, 4-year state universities, Ivy Leagues, etc), what it commonly looks like on the ground is a far cry from the old liberal arts conception of education and involves a trajectory rife with ideological and moral hazards that parents ought to give an honest evaluation of.Ben masterfully leads this episode, looking at the topic from every angle, while Chad bellows and blusters along as the underachieving co-host. The two give a critical shakedown of the default answers parents often give to their kids' post-secondary choices. What are the significant risks inherent in sending your kids to college, and are those risks outweighed by the benefits? Episode 117 - It's official: Ben is a hunter! (Chad is still--most certainly--not.) Ben nabbed yet another buck this hunting season, and the process by which he accomplished that kill made him feel like he'd finally arrived. What about this year's hunt brought him this sense of achievement? Now having found it, he tells his story and shares how he believes other men should strive for the same.Ben scopes out an episode based on his hunting experience and leads the charge, as Chad wanders into unchartered territory as the co-host still sporting the same stereotypical salesman getup (khakis & polo for life!). The two gut this topic for all its meaty content. How is hunting a great example of a skilled activity that requires patience and the honing of a craft to become successful? What about being both immersed in nature and needing to be quiet while hunting can be so spiritually rewarding? And can Ben sell the salesman, Chad, on giving hunting a try?
Episode 116 - Whether you're married 5 years or 50, looking back on the early days in your relationship with your spouse can bring about feelings of great nostalgia. The excitement of thinking she might be the one; the deep desire to have her become yours forever; moving into your first home together: these are memories with strong emotional resonance. They are the things we sing songs about! Episode 114 - When it comes to unpopular Catholic moral teachings , this one ranks right up there! Whether you're a Catholic or a non-Catholic Christian, the Church's stance is an equal opportunity offender. Or perhaps, more accurately put, it's a controversial stance that's considered equally out-of-touch and irrelevant (and, therefore, is mostly ignored). All that means for Manhood Restored is this: it sure sounds like a great topic to bring up! Chad foresees a fecund future as he furrows the field of this episode, while Ben's indentured to the hard labor of coming along to corral the promised yield as co-host. The two brave the strain of an uncomfortable conversation--disagreeing, agreeing, and agreeing to disagree--hoping for some kind of harvest. Why does Chad consider contraception a "secret weapon" in the Culture Wars (see minute 57)? Episode 113 - The attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7th, 2023 has set off a maelstrom of political turmoil on the global stage. From the intense outrage over the disturbing details of the terrorist's actions to the strange show of support for them from elitists in academia and media, it's deep, murky waters for an average person to wade through. Despite that fact, what's clear is this: we are witnessing a significant historical event, one which we'd do well to attempt to understand.Ben leads with gratitude as the host for this important episode, as Chad comes along as a concerned co-host grappling with the issue's complexity. The two talk through some of the latest headlines as well as the historical backdrop to this conflict, searching for an average man's workable understanding. What are we to make of the demonstrations on college campuses in support of Palestine? Episode 112 - Deacon Marty Brown has been a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for 13 years. He currently serves the St Isidore the Farmer Family of Parishes and is the Facilities Manager at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St Mary's, Ohio. Prior to becoming a deacon, Marty worked in various fields - construction, welding, mechanics, groundskeeping, firefighting, as well as being a lifelong farmer. He and his wife, Angie, have been married 40 years; they have 4 children and 12 grandchildren.Ben jumps off this interview episode hoping to soar to new heights of understanding, as Chad packs a parachute, taking every Catholic precaution as the co-host. The two take a leap into this conversation and quickly find themselves drafting behind the momentum of their guest's story of faithfulness to God's will. What were some of the dramatic ways that God helped Marty discover his calling to be a deacon? How can putting your trust in the Holy Spirit enable you to see big and little choices as opportunities to serve God? And how does the spirit of fear often undermine the discernment process? Episode 111 -All throughout life, we find ourselves making a multitude of decisions. Some are small and insignificant; others are major, the kinds that are like crossroads. When we are in the midst of making those big decisions (Should I change my job? Should I marry this girl? Should we move our family to a new town?), discerning the right Choice can be downright difficult. Ben puts the magnifying glass over this question as the episode's Sherlock Holmes, and Chad twists the ends of his imaginary stash while helping Ben get to the bottom of things. The two puzzle over wise ways to discern life's biggest choices and what role God has in the process. When it comes to these "crossroad" types of decisions, is there ONE right path that God wills for you--like one person meant for you to marry? How important of a role should other people and their opinions play in decision making? Is it possible to prepare for future big decisions before you even know what those decisions will be? BONUS episode - Chad & Ben take turns RANTING about Issues 1 and 2 on the Ohio Ballot this November 7th, 2023. (Share this episode around with friends and family!) Chad rants on Issue 1 (up through minute 10:52), specifically calling out Catholics. What did the Archbishop of Cincinnati do on Respect Life Sunday, what was his promulgation on Issue 1, and what does that mean for the consciences of voting Catholics? Ben rants on Issue 2 (from minute 10:52 till episode's end), bringing to light facts now known about the commercialization of marijuana from other states who've implemented it. Episode 110 - The gloves come off (!) in this doozy of a debate episode. If you thought our debate on baptism (episode 70) was juicy, then here's one that'll surely keep your attention to the end! It's the ever-ancient, ever-new battle between Protestants and Catholics, hashed out by friends, Ben and Chad: are we, or are we not, saved by faith alone? (Spoiler alert: they're still friends when it's over!) Chad dings the bell and comes out of his corner wearing the proverbial "plus works" trunks, while a well-trained Ben enters the ring wearing trunks that sport the letters "OSAS". While beginning cordially and both still standing by the end, the two make a good mess of things in the middle! How do Protestants read James chapter 2 when it teaches that faith without works is dead? Can Catholics have any assurance of their salvation if they're constantly worried about the severity of their sins and the meagerness of their works? Episode 109 - Steven Arms is the co-author of "Milestone to Manhood", a book about the Rite of Passage tradition his family created for a whole generation of boys who were coming of age as young men. In the book, he talks about his own Rite of Passage weekend and reflects on how it shaped him into the man he is today. He then shares how fathers can organize Rite of Passage events for their own sons. Steven lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Emily, and is the proud father of three young children.Chad is the Master of Ceremonies for this episode, as Ben lends a hand as a co-host and--most definitively--a man (and WHAT a man is he!). The two pick their guest's brain, hoping to adapt and adopt his insight for their own son-rearing efforts. What is a Rite of Passage historically, and why is it that there doesn't seem to be one for boys living in western society? Why is a formal, pre-planned ceremony so important - can't the transmission of manhood between father and son happen organically and over time? Does a Rite of Passage ceremony actually make a substantive difference in the life of a man?SHOW NOTES:Book website (full w/resources): Milestone to Manhood | Rite of Passage
Episode 108 - With its many and far-reaching tentacles, it's no longer a matter of if the Giant "Woke-topus" finds you, it's a matter of when. It's coming for your kids in the subtle themes of the latest Disney movie, and during the not-so-subtle drag queen story hour at the local library; it's lingering between the big game during every commercial break, and soon (if not already) parading down your small-town main street in the month of June. And just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, here it also comes... to a workplace near you. Ben leads the confrontation with this stinking cephalopod with the hopes of putting it to bed once and for all; and Chad, as salty as ever, comes along with a soothing voice as co-host, coaxing it back into its cage. The two untangle the messy (and confusing) subject of workplace wokism. Should something as simple as mutual respect between co-workers conquer the day, no matter the issue at hand? What freedoms and rights are guaranteed to someone in a workplace setting, and how ought a conflict between two competing freedoms be resolved? And what is the Christian's responsibility when put in situations at work that push their conscience to the edge?
Episode 107 - Imagine leftists trying to make a documentary of their own by this episode's same title, like some kind of clever rebuttal to Matt Walsh's wildly successful "What is a Woman?". And, instead of interviewing extremist liberals, they interviewed average, everyday Americans. One wonders with delight how that might play out? Hint: if it went anything like this episode, it'd end in slap-happy hilarity! Chad channels his inner Sweet Baby Gang only to end up laughing (and sniffling) the whole episode through as its lead Super-movie-quoter. Ben fails to capture Chad's point (or keep up with his movie references) but rallies triumphantly at the last second as the gloating cohost. The two try mightily to take this question seriously with (thanks to Ben!) mostly poor results. Why is it that sane, clear-thinking people are made to feel crazy for refusing to ignore biological realities? Can Ben pass the "Are You a Man Test"? And, once and for all, what does the famous '90s hip hop group Salt-N-Pepa say in their hit song: "Wanna man, wanna man..." or "What a man, what a man..."??
Episode 106 - Andrew Peel is the owner of the Rock Solid Performance Gym. He's competed in fitness events such as CrossFit, Ironman triathlons, obstacle course races, and bodybuilding. Andrew's online coaching business, AP2 Fitness, can be found on various social media platforms, and his new podcast is called "The No Bad Days Show." He and his wife and their three children live in Rockford, Ohio.Chad flexes his make-believe muscles as lead meat head for this episode, as Ben makes guttural noises as he carries his weight as the cut-up co-host. The two ask their guest where the weight room's at and feel the burn of inadequacy. How does a man's fitness--or lack thereof--affect all aspects of his life? Episode 105 -While many men need the reminder to curb their enthusiasm for constant productivity in their middle-aged years (see Episode #72, "The Semi-Retired Man"), perhaps there are still other men who need the reminder to maintain that enthusiasm into their advanced years. For men "with their best years behind them", the struggle might be accurately described as one between becoming stagnate and staying innovative. That struggle might become the difference between life and death.Ben imagines himself with snow white facial hair and a southern drawl as the Colonel for this episode, as Chad co-hosts, sprinkling in spicy "advices" into Ben's not-yet-famous recipe. The two cook up conversation surrounding the question of how men can stay engaged into old age. How would Ben and Chad envision themselves spending their retirement when that time comes? And what are some stories of men Ben and Chad know personally who've set great examples of how to stay active and innovative into advanced age?SHOW NOTES: Colonel Sanders Rejected Over 1000 Times
In Chad's favorite fashion, he strikes up a BONUS! conversation with Ben about the recent phenomenon that is Oliver Anthony, singer/songwriter of the top hit "Rich Men North of Richmond." Episode 104 – The connection between the natural world and the supernatural world, between matter and spirit, is one of great mystery. Some might contend that physical matter is a hindrance to spiritual growth, while others find their spiritual lives enhanced by the natural world. One thing is for sure: the interplay between the two is consequential and definitely worth exploration.Chad's at the helm as he pulls up anchor to see which way the winds take this drifting discussion of an episode, as Ben tries to calculate coordinates and engineer some sort of safe passage as co-host. The two brave the open seas of a loosely planned episode. What should be made of claims to spiritual experiences by those taking psychedelic drugs? What exactly does Ben mean by "carnies" in his episode title, and what does he have against them? How does the Parable of the Sower speak to the County Fair mentality? Episode 101 - We live in dark times. An odd remaking of the Dark Ages, because the light of Western Civilization is again under threat of being extinguished. Preserving that light for the future is an effort worth undertaking. It's also one undertaken successfully once before, by the most unassuming group of people - Catholic monks. Might we do well to imitate their model... in our homes? Chad, fond of rules as he is, plays the part of Abbot for this episode, while 'Brother Ben' yet again graciously plays along as a Catholic character and co-host. The two ponder the possibilities of preservation within the four walls a Christian home. In what ways did Catholic monks stem the tide of barbarism during the Middle Ages? Episode 100 - When menfolk get together in celebration, the revelry and carousing that ensues can, to some (to many?), be obnoxious and offensive. Why oh why, some might ask, must it be so? Shouldn't it not be so? What is it about certain stereotypical manly behavior--like stereotypical manly appearances (see 'Fords and Facial Hair', Episode 1) --that can be so off-putting from the outside looking in? Ben swears he won't cave to peer pressure for best-in-class life insurance rates as lead 'foul linguist' on this episode, while Chad strikes a hard bargain as the clean yet clouded co-host. The two raise their voices, raise their glasses, and light their stogie(s?) in celebration, all the while debating whether any of it is even appropriate! Episode 99 - Being a Man of Action isn't as easy as it sounds. Sure, men may recognize a righteous cause when they see one; and, from time to time, men may feel the flame of mission stirred up within them; they might even, in a flash of inspiration, step out and send a shot across the bow. But then any number of obstacles--distraction, fear, doubt--inevitably follow. As a result, too many of them are left on the sideline, apathetic, and promising to take action--next time. Episode 98 - The word 'religion' carries a curiously negative connotation in our modern lexicon. The term is more often used for the purposes of criticism, as it conjures associations with anti-individualism, historical oppression, and hypocrisy. Religion might as well mean backward and ignorant. To be labeled as 'religious', then, would conceivably be the worst personal descriptor one could imagine. 'Spiritual', 'faithful', 'a good person' - yeah, those are all okay. But surely never 'religious'!Chad takes the [fictitious] challenge of breathing life back into the word 'religion' as lead contrarian for this episode, while Ben bites his tongue as long as he possibly can (which isn't long) as co-host. The two wrestle with the many popularized misnomers surrounding this term in hopes of sparking its comeback. Can a Christian have a relationship with Jesus and adhere to a religion, or are the two mutually exclusive? What will take the place of religion if traditional forms of it are eschewed in society?
