What is a phobia? It is an irrational fear of something that's unlikely to cause harm. There are over 400 recognized phobias out there. Ablutophobia is the fear of bathing. This condition seems to be widespread among middle school and high school boys. :o) Fear is a normal human reaction that protects us by signaling danger and preparing us to deal with it. But fear can also be unhealthy and dangerous. The Bible talks about the “fear of man.” This manifests itself when we crave acceptance from our peers and fear rejection. The Bible says that fear of man is a dangerous trap.Don't let fear rule you and your child's hearts. Instead, remember that “the Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”For more encouragement and parenting advice, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.

Kyle Kauffman | Mar 30 2025Who we fear will shape how we live, what we say and don't say, and ultimately who we seek to serve and please. The Bible consistently warns against the fear of man in our lives and calls us instead to fear God. We know that fear of many can lead to all sorts of problems in our lives, but sometimes it can feel impossible to fear God instead of man. Fear of man is one of the greatest things that can get in the way of obeying God as we seek to be a part of his mission and make disciples. And on the flip side, fear of God can be one of the greatest sources of help and strength in obeying god. 5:1-42 gives a very powerful picture into the danger of fearing man and the freedom of fearing God. And along the way it gives us reasons why we should place our fear in God and not in man.

We're each handing out five Oscars to anything in the genre: actors, directors, costume design, kills — no rules, just love for horror. Then we turn our attention to The Ring (2002), the movie that made us afraid of VHS tapes and static screens. We break down how it helped redefine horror in the early 2000s and ask: would the infamous seven-day curse still be scary in today's digital age where content spreads instantly? And here's the real moral dilemma—if your life depended on it, who would you show the tape to? A stranger… or someone close? We also talk about whether The Ring still holds up today, give it a spot on our Fear Factor scale, share some creepy facts, give our final rating, and close things out with a few solid horror recommendations you should add to your watchlist.Press play… just don't answer the phone after.

How much can legacy code tell us beyond just functionality? Julia López, Senior Software Engineer at Harvest, believes that even small details—such as white spaces, variable names, and formatting choices—can reveal a system's history. In this episode, Julia and Robby discuss the importance of refactoring and how a strong engineering culture can make or break a team's ability to maintain and improve software over time. Julia shares her experience leading a multi-year overhaul of Harvest's billing system, balancing stakeholder expectations while ensuring the rewrite delivered real value. They explore how refactoring decisions evolve as teams grow, how to mentor newer developers to feel empowered to make changes, and why Julia doesn't always trust her own estimations (for good reason). She also opens up about the complexities of transitioning a live billing system while supporting customers, finance teams, and engineering operations—all without disrupting payments.Beyond technical decisions, they also dive into the challenges of communication in remote teams, the value of autonomy in software development, and how teams can make a case for technical debt reduction even when leadership isn't prioritizing it. If you've ever struggled with refactoring legacy systems or advocating for improvements, this conversation is packed with practical lessons.
