I've got a Friday treat for you in the form of this bonus minisode with documentary filmmaker and producer Sara Dosa, whose latest project FIRE OF LOVE is in UK cinemas today. Find showtimes near you! This explosive and intimate and eccentric documentary tells the story of Katia and Maurice Krafft, French volcanologists who were also a married couple. For two decades they roamed the planet, chasing eruptions and documenting their discoveries and in doing so, left behind a legacy that enhanced our knowledge of the natural world. Sara and the filmmaking team have crafted a lyrical and curious celebration of the intrepid scientists' spirit of adventure, drawing from the Kraffts' spectacular archive and imbuing their story with a freshness and ferocity that sizzles on the screen.  Sara has also directed an Emmy-nominated episode of the Netflix music docuseries REMASTERED about Johnny Cash's 1970 concert for Richard Nixon; and premiered her third feature as a director THE SEER & THE UNSEEN at the 2019 San Francisco International Film Festival. As a documentary producer, she recently produced the Peabody and Emmy nominated SURVIVORS about Ebola in Sierra Leone (2018 IDFA / POV); co-produced AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER (2017 Sundance / Paramount) and THE EDGE OF DEMOCRACY (2019 Sundance / Netflix); and, produced Peabody award-winning AUDRIE & DAISY (2016 Sundance / Netflix Originals).  We talk about how she got her start in filmmaking, alongside studying anthropology and how her interest in human behaviour continues to inform her practice, as well as what led to her to directing FIRE OF LOVE, how she came to involve Miranda July and why Agnes Varda was a key inspiration.

Daisy was able to find some light within the darkness, though. She and her older brother, Charlie, became sexual assault survivor advocates and HuffPost named Daisy one of their “13 Most Fearless Teens of 2013.” Netflix even caught wind of Daisy's incredible story and the lack of justice she received and produced the documentary Audrie & Daisy in 2016. Audrie Pott was another sexual assault survivor documented in the film who took her own life in 2012 due to the trauma and persistent bullying – the same ordeal Daisy had gone through. But soon, tragedy would strike the Coleman family again. We send so much love and light to Daisy's surviving brothers, Melinda's sons, Logan and Charlie, and the rest of the Coleman family as well as everyone at SafeBAE. Joanna McGarry (joanna_mcgarry/joanna_mcgarry) joins me to talk about 'adding threads' to her considerable talents. A beauty journalist for over a decade Jo recently made the decision to embark on a full-time degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.  The idea of a 'mid life leap' - making a dramatic shift from a career to a calling - has been around for some time, but in Jo's case she is broadening her knowledge, rather than choosing one over the other. I couldn't wait to sit down with Jo to find out why Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture called to her and how she was going about continuing to contribute to one of the country's most popular magazines as their Beauty Director-at-Large. In my time with Jo we talk in detail about how she came to make the decision, what it's really like to go back to school in your thirties and why timing was an important factor. Somehow, via talk of meditation, we also bond over a love for reality TV, where we sourced our style inspiration as teens without the likes of instagram and twitter and how mindfulness is playing a role in both our lives. links to the podcasts, books, features and documentaries mentioned in the show... Tori Amos and Garbage’s Shirley Manson ruled the ‘90s alternative music charts with hits like “Cornflake Girl” and “Only Happy When It Rains" (respectively), and they continue to make vital music today. On the eve of Amos’ Boys for Pele twentieth anniversary deluxe reissue release, the old friends sat down to talk revisiting their younger selves and early work, the constraints society puts on aging women, the film Audrie & Daisy being a powerful teaching tool against sexual assault and the song Amos wrote for it, motherhood, and the patriarchy in the music business. They even offer some advice to aspiring female pop stars. AUDRIE & DAISY: THE FILM AND THE STORY OF TEEN SEXUAL ASSAULT We read about it every week – a teenage girl sexually assaulted by classmates or neighbor boys, and what happens next is more horrible than the physical violence.  What happens next in so many of these cases, is the girl is bullied, ridiculed, and slut shamed, and if she dares to report it to police, she is often the butt of community-wide derision, victim blaming, and campaigns to trivialize what happened and to discredit her. In Delaney Henderson’s case, her rape became national news, a rap artist made a song out of it that even threatened her life, and she made the decision to use her experience to do some good.  She not only reported her assault, she sued the rap artist, she started an organization to support victims like her, AND she was instrumental in making a new documentary featured on Netflix called Audrie & Daisy. The film is a testament to the girls who live through this experience and those who do not.  Join Delaney, Daisy and Jada Smith (who also appears in the film) as we talk about their experiences, the film, and the prevalence of sexual assault and its despicable follow up for teenage girls.
