ENCORE RECORDINGIn today's gospel reading Jesus says, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing.” What kind of fire is he talking about? He also says, “Do you think I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you but rather division.” How can these words be reconciled with all that Jesus says about love and forgiveness, his teachings about the importance of marriage and family and his prayer for unity? If these questions resemble yours, listen now to this episode.Readingshttps://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/081725.cfm“Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J.,

This talk focuses on parts of the story and the learning written about in Red Hot Steel: Love Behind Bars, which involves love and loss with a man incarcerated in a maximum security prison. Sadhana is a Sanskrit word about our individual spiritual path that has the quality of going through fire. Grief is love that has slipped out of view. We live in self-imposed prisons and the path is about the way out by seeing the false nature of the prison. Prison is a place of loss, a hell realm of unrelenting suffering from which there is no escape other than what is done with one's own mind. The environment creates necessity for some to find inner peace, refuge, sanity, and conscience. Prison is a place where the culture dumps its collective shadow. Three types of karma are discussed including inexorable karma that we have no choice but to go through. Loss shouldn't surprise us since it is built into reality, but we don't tend to live as if this is so. Loss and change need not detract us from living full out. When things do not turn out as we wish, we can stay in the flow of grace without regret, refusing to be bitter or a victim. Writing is a way to deal with disappointment. Everything is learning. Prison can teach humility and gratitude for simple things. When we experience pain, we can feel others' pain. We start fresh every day; there's always a bounty of abundance coming in some way. Beauty and suffering go together in the fullness of life. Caregivers can be more involved in others' experience than their own. It's a gift to have empathy, but there is also a need for boundaries, for empathy regulation with wisdom added to compassion. We only learn by going through fire, which is why there are no mistakes. We come to earth to learn our lessons, to evolve and grow in consciousness. Jessica Jenns is a writer, meditation teacher and coach. Red Hot Steel is her first book.

In a captivating episode of Inside Personal Growth, I had the honor of interviewing Kelly James Clark, PhD, a distinguished professor of philosophy and author of the profound book "Raging Fire of Love: What I've Learned from Jesus, the Jews, and the Prophet." Kelly's work is a remarkable exploration of interfaith understanding and compassion, focusing on the commonalities among the Abrahamic traditions—Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

For centuries theologians, clergy and laity within the Abrahamic traditions have made great attempts to define where the concepts of love and justice fall within their faiths. Many Christians are quick to acknowledge that Christianity is indeed a religion founded on the principle of love, but look upon the Hebrew scriptures as being little more than a set of moral codes provided by a deity who is more concerned with the performance of ritual and appeasement. A similar view is held by many about Islam. But in Kelly Clark's new book 'Raging Fire of Love' he takes a deep dive into the sacred scriptures of these religions to offer evidence that all of them hold as their high priority the understanding that the God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam is a loving God; and that adherents to those religions are expected to replicate that love to our "neighbors" (read: everyone) in daily life.

That includes thoughts and emotions. This is the raging fire of love thing. I think we need to cultivate love for people who are different from us. That means moving our emotions in a favorable way towards people who are different. And it means giving up our fear and learning to overcome our fear with love. Thoughts On Breathing I do not have any thoughts to share on breathing. I am too ADD. I have tried it. I know it's good for me, and I do it for a while, but then I'm off into something else. Bullying Story One of my first good friends in the Islamic community is a well-known philosopher who is on television a lot. In Turkey, religion gets on television a lot. It's involved in a lot of conversations that they have. Sometimes it's just religion, or sometimes it's on other topics, and they want a religious perspective on it. He has become a major media figure and has millions of followers. I thought it was opportune for me to become acquainted with him as I was trying to build bridges between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Then I went to a conference one time. I flew a long way to get there to give a talk. He didn't come to my talk. He had given a talk the previous day and got mad at some people. He came at the end, and he gave a speech at the end that had nothing to do with my talk. He just denounced all the people he was mad at from the day before. I turned to my best Muslim friend there and asked what he was doing. He said he was getting back at people from the day before then. I just looked around, and there were hundreds of people there. I was probably the only non-Muslim, the only non-Turk. There were hundreds of people there. I could see people rolling their eyes. I talked to a few more people, and I just figured out, because there were other clues, that he was a bully. The documentary Fire of Love, directed by Sara Dosa, takes viewers on a mesmerizing journey into the world of volcanology. The film is centered around footage filmed by French volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft, who devoted their lives to studying volcanoes and capturing their stunning beauty. Fire of Love is an intimate look into the Kraffts' personal and professional lives, as well as their ultimate fate, tragically lost to a volcanic eruption. Director Sara Dosa and editors Jocelyne Chaput and Erin Casper created the story almost entirely from watching 250 hours of the Kraffts' archival footage. Fortunately, the footage was in great shape and was fun and fascinating to look through. Sara knew that she wanted to focus on the relationship between Maurice and Katia, and their love affair both with volcanoes and each other. Sara, Jocelyne and Erin also collaborated on writing the script and narration. They wanted the amazing footage to speak for itself, and kept the story tight and intimate, filling in with narration, archival interviews and stylized animation rather than shooting current interviews with those who knew them. Sara was influenced by the look of French New Wave films as a guide for the documentary. It seemed a natural fit since Maurice Krafft's footage of volcanoes from the late 1960's and early 70's also were influenced by the French New Wave. Volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft shot most of the footage themselves on 16mm film, and proved to be good cinematographers. Katia was a talented artist as well, and photographed beautiful images of volcanoes that appeared in her books. Together, they captured some of the most stunning and rare footage of volcanoes, which continue to be used by scientists to better understand them today. Fire of Love is a beautiful tribute to the Kraffts and their legacy, and a reminder of the incredible power and beauty of the natural world. Fire of Love is currently available on Hulu and Disney+ and is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Sara Dosa won the 2023 DGA Award for Outstanding Directing for Fire of Love. Editors Erin Casper and Jocelyne Chaput have won an ACE Eddie award for their work on the film.  Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

“Growing up, I thought I would be either a professor of cultural anthropology or a non-fiction, long-form writer, but then I fell in love with cinema.” Combining these childhood dreams into one career, Sara found herself behind the camera on films like The Last Season, The Seer and the Unseen, and most recently, Fire of Love. In college, Sara was active in economic justice groups and saw a documentary about “the ravages of free trade in Jamaica” that combined “grandiose academic ideas” and delivered it in “human terms.” She said, “These emotional colors, so to speak, were the marriage of politics as well as art, that really moved me.” This is also known as the Mother Teresa effect, which many charities think about today when creating messages for people to act upon. The idea comes from Mother Teresa herself, who said, “If I look at the mass, I will never act. If I look at the one, I will.” Research behind this shows us that people give me to a single person charity (emotional) than to a larger cause, where they are give stats (analytical). Sara thinks about these types of things when sharping projects like Fire of Love. The description for her latest project reads, “Intrepid scientists and lovers Katia and Maurice Krafft died in a volcanic explosion doing the very thing that brought them together: unraveling the mysteries of volcanoes by capturing the most explosive imagery ever recorded.” As a storyteller, she sees all of this as one job. “It's kin to religion for me. Connected to the world. A feeling of humanity. The questions that ignite my mind. Different types of jobs in service of the same thing: creating meaningful stories of impact.” And for Sara, this means a deep passion for the work, but also a strong team of animators, writers, and editors around her. On this episode of Rumble with Michael Moore, Mike dives deep into our biggest terrorist threat — us. Or, more specifically, the fact that one of our two major parties is led by hundreds of elected officials who still want to overthrow the government by overturning the 2020 election AND by suppressing the votes of Black Americans. Mike calls these efforts an act of treason. Plus, the current and still twice-impeached leader of that party has now called for the "termination" of the United States Constitution — and the demand that he be installed as our unelected dictator. Madness! But it's real, it's still with us, and in 3 weeks 118 House members and 10 U.S Senators — all of whom voted on the night of January 6, 2021 to overturn the election — will be sworn in as part of our 118th US Congress. This sacred headquarters of our Democracy will house 128 traitors who tried to overthrow our government. What are we to do about this? To help create and cement the historical record, Mike names the names of each one of these traitors. For The Love Of Volcanoes A new documentary, “Fire of Love,” tells the story of French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft. The married couple spent two decades chasing volcanic eruptions across the world. Katia was a geochemist and Maurice a geologist. Together, they studied the science of volcanoes and produced films showcasing their power. That is, until their deaths in 1991, when they were killed by the very thing they loved so much. Guest host Sophie Bushwick talks with Sara Dosa, director of the documentary “Fire of Love,” which is in theaters nationwide, and will be available on Disney+ later this year.   A Blind Researcher Making A More Accessible World Joshua Miele has spent his career trying to make the world more accessible for blind and visually impaired people. As a blind person, his lived experiences have shaped the way he thinks about technology and how it can be used to better serve disabled people. He's invented products like YouDescribe—a tool that adds audio description to YouTube videos—and Tactile Maps Automated Production, a software that creates tactile maps for people to feel. Although adaptive technologies try to help disabled people access information, it isn't always driven by the input and needs of disabled people. There needs to be more disabled designers, engineers, and researchers spearheading this work, Miele says. Now, he works as a principal accessibility researcher at Amazon's Lab126, where he helps make products like the Echo and Fire tablets more accessible. Guest host Sophie Bushwick speaks with Miele about how his own experiences shape his work, and the importance of disability inclusion in designing new technologies.   What You Might Not Have Known About The Vagina When it comes to researching human genitals and the organs called, in simple terms, “reproductive,” the penis has long been the star of the show. “It doesn't help to only look at one or the other. Only by zooming out can we see them in their full range of variation and possibility,” writes science journalist Rachel E. Gross in her book, Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage, which tells the long history of neglected research into the vagina and its companion organs—the uterus, clitoris, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries. The book takes readers through myths, mysteries, and the legacy of shame around sexuality. It also introduces researchers who are finally making breakthroughs in our understanding of fertility, pleasure, and even immune health that's been linked to these organs. The book interviews doctors who are using that knowledge to make life better for everyone—including cancer patients and older people going through menopause, transgender women who want their own vaginas, people with endometriosis, and those, including intersex people, looking to regain pleasure and agency after childhood genital cutting. Producer Christie Taylor interviews Gross about our growing understanding of clitoral anatomy, the long-misunderstood egg cell, the uterus' ability to heal, and more. Plus, why these organs are important for whole-body health, and why everyone needs to understand them better. To read an excerpt from Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage by Rachel E. Gross, visit sciencefriday.com.   Transcripts for each segment will be available a week after the show airs at sciencefriday.com.

Sara Dosa's new documentary FIRE OF LOVE is more stylized than Werner Herzog's GRIZZLY MAN, but it's a remarkably close companion piece, with its interest in themes of obsession and fatalism, and in people who felt the most important thing in the world was bringing their passion to others, even if they had to die doing it — and in both cases, did. We talk over what we got from FIRE OF LOVE, and what was denied to us by the filmmaker's choices, before bringing GRIZZLY MAN back in to compare the quixotic quest of “freelance” volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft to that of amateur naturalist Timothy Treadwell.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about GRIZZLY MAN, FIRE OF LOVE, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, leaving a short voicemail at 773-234-9730, or commenting on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes and more.  Outro music: The B-52's, “Lava” Next Pairing: Byron Haskin's THE WAR OF THE WORLDS and Jordan Peele's NOPE Learn more about your ad choices. The festival hit FIRE OF LOVE follows a pair of volcanologists who yearned to get up close and personal with nature at its most dangerous, eventually paying for their obsession with their lives, a tragic arc that naturally calls to mind Timothy Treadwell, whose doomed self-directed study of wild bears was immortalized in Werner Herzog's GRIZZLY MAN. The 2005 film is a fascinating artifact and one of the most perfect matings of documentarian and subject imaginable, revealing almost as much about Herzog as a filmmaker as it does Treadwell as a self-proclaimed protector of the grizzlies. This week we dig into some of the philosophical contradictions between subject and documentarian, as well as how the film toes the line between humor and condescension.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about GRIZZLY MAN, FIRE OF LOVE, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Filmmaker Sara Dosa's childhood fascination and fear of volcanoes shaped her career. While finishing her last film “The Seer and the Unseen” about an Icelandic woman fighting to save a lava field from becoming a road, she came across archival footage from Katia and Maurice Krafft, the renowned French volcanologists. “They had shot hundreds of hours of footage, and Iceland was one of their absolute favorite places, so they did have extraordinary images of volcanoes,” she says. The scientist couple were killed in a pyroclastic blast at Mount Unzen in Japan in 1991. And though the documentarian doesn't remember their tragic deaths, she and her team became transfixed by the duo. “Once we learned more about them as people, both as these unique, idiosyncratic, hilarious, and philosophical individuals [who had] this extraordinary life where they chased erupting volcanoes all around the world, we thought, this is a world we want to dwell in.” Dosa pieces together their imagery to make “Fire of Love.” It is an homage to the French couple, their love for each other, and devotion and fearlessness to studying volcanoes – a job that ultimately led to their deaths. The film also explores the Kraffts' travels, writings, and lectures on the beauty and dangers of molten lava and blasts of hot gasses, and their ability to document and share their findings with a wide audience. But first, Hollywood media and tech moguls reconvene in Sun Valley Idaho this week, where large deals used to be brokered, but are now less likely.
