We are going to close this week with such a fun conversation with one of my favorite writers and editors, the spectacular Andrea Lavinthal! Andrea is People magazine's style and beauty director, which is just as wide of a swath as you think it would be. Andrea has 20 years' experience as a writer, editor, and content creator, and she has been with People specifically since 2012. In her role, she regularly appears on shows like Today, Good Morning America, and Access, as well as podcasts and radio programs; for one beautiful slice of time, she co-hosted one of my personal favorite podcasts, “People in the ‘90s,” which I beg on today's episode for her to bring back. Prior to her time at People, Andrea worked for Cosmopolitan, Us Weekly, and SiriusXM, and she has also written three books. Consider this your permission to sit back, take a breather, and enjoy this incredibly entertaining conversation with Andrea. We couldn't imagine a better guest for Mental Health Awareness Month than Amy Keller Laird: Founder & CEO of Mental. We sat down with Amy to ask about her career journey from Editor in Chief of Women's Health Magazine to founder of the first digital mental health & lifestyle brand for women. As someone who had worked in the beauty and wellness space as Beauty Director of Allure, Amy had seen the world of mental health talked about, but not in the way she had personally experienced. Amy has lived with OCD, anxiety and postpartum depression and found that she wasn't seeing her lived experience being reflected. We really admire how Amy married her experience in magazines and her journey with mental health to create something truly authentic: “I wanted to say, "Where's the publication that would speak to me?”To hear more of Amy's career journey and her thoughts on how we can break the stigma of talking about mental health in the workplace, listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts!

Leigh Campbell, cofounder of Brillo Beauty, is on the Female Founder World podcast with Jasmine Garnsworthy! Leigh is an OG beauty girlie. She hosts Australia's largest beauty podcast called YouBeauty, which also has a Facebook group with more than 75,000 members, was Beauty Director at Cosmopolitan Magazine Australia, then Head of Lifestyle at Huffington Post in Australia, and is now at Mamamia—a huge women's publishing and podcasting brand in Australia. Recently she cofounded a beauty brand called Brillo Beauty just five months ago, and we spend a lot of time in this ep talking about how she spotted a gap in the market in a very crowded beauty industry, finding a cofounder, overcoming her fear to start her own business, and how Brillo got traction. It's not often we get to hear from someone really on the ground floor of something that I think is going to be huge, and I think it's really helpful for anyone who is in the early days of their own founder story. Leigh and her cofounder invested $260,000 of their own money to start Brillo, and made $180,000 back in the first three months of business just through sales on the website. We have a full breakdown of how they spent that first investment too: the website cost $5k, formulation and all the testing you need to launch a beauty product was $30k, their first run of product including packaging was $150k, they spend another $50k on branding and content, $10k on legal and admin, and another $15k or so on other random startup costs. Beauty HAC was created by Skincare and Beauty Expert Hillary Anne Clark Makeup Artist and Esthetician, Hillary Clark, has spent over two decades dedicated to helping women find what really works for their skin. Born into a family of beauty entrepreneurs, Hillary became the youngest Beauty Director in Nordstrom history before joining the founding team of beauty disruptors at Sephora.com as their West Coast Beauty Editor. She has collaborated with and learned from beauty gurus like Dr. Nicholas Perricone and worked the runways for major designers. With her own by-appointment beauty boutique, Blush Beauty, she realized there were products missing in the world. Hillary envisioned a future where skincare no longer means 10-step regimens and a cluttered beauty cabinet. That's why she HAC'd the typical skincare routine by combining Age-Defying Formulas + Detoxifying Rollers to care for skin from the inside out and the outside in. Plus, with just two problem-solving products, Beauty HAC was designed to play well with others meaning, that the formulas and rollers work well with, and often enhance the ingredients in existing skincare practices. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/skincareanarchy/message

Editor's Top Beauty and Rejuvenation Secrets Justine Cullen is an award-winning editor and author with almost 30 years of experience in publishing. Having worked with and led the talented teams of some of the biggest mastheads in beauty and fashion including Marie Claire, Elle and now as the newly appointed Editor of Instyle Magazine, Justine has most likely influenced your view of beauty and style. She is that influential. Starting her career as a beauty editor on titles such as BBC Clothes Show in the UK and Marie Claire Australia, Justine is one of the OG experts and tastemakers of the fashion and beauty industry. Her book Semi Gloss is a series of autobiographical essays on life in the publishing world, marriage, raising four sons and behind the scenes look at the business of glamour. Semi-Gloss is described as an intimate, sharp and witty look at growing up and growing older from the kind of woman who seems like she has it all together - the glamorous job, the perfect family, the killer wardrobe. But, chipping away at that shiny, sparkly surface, Justine reveals the beautiful mess that lies beneath. I have known and loved Justine since we were in our early 20's when she was the formidable Beauty Director at Marie Claire magazine, and this episode was a wonderful walk through memory lane and a candid conversation about society's evolving views and conversations about beauty and style at every age.Listen to the full podcast here:https://omny.fm/shows/ageless-by-rescu/justine-cullen-editor-instyle-author-beauty-expertSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to my sister, Annabel.Annie has recently changed careers and is now an English teacher at a secondary school in London; but before that, she enjoyed a glamorous career as a journalist and the Beauty Director at Red Magazine. She has written for multiple publications, including The Guardian, The Times and The Daily Telegraph. She is also the mother to four teenagers (three of whom are triplets) and my beloved nephews and niece. In this conversation, Annie and I cover an array of topics including: the world's biggest launch party to celebrate my new podcast, which consisted of Annie, me, and one of my nephews; why it's been helpful to have a sister who hasn't travelled the ‘conventional' path of marriage and kids because it's given her a front row seat to what being a ‘spinster' actually looks like; and how she has never felt that my journey of not having children has required any pity.We chat about: how her career started off at Goldman Sachs but she quickly realised that a career in banking was not for her; how she went onto work as a journalist for many years, but decided to pack it in a few years ago to become an English teacher; and how both of us think that, actually, I'm the older sister because I'm the boring, practical and bossy one so we reckon our parents got us confused when we were little. We also discuss how she has never judged me or thought there was anything missing from my life just because I don't have my own family; the things that she has seen to be advantages and benefits of being single and childfree; and how she strongly feels that the lives of those women who don't have children are equally as valid as anyone else's. Annie also talks about: how much it annoys her when people say that those who don't have kids are selfish, and what she thinks they mean by that; how she has learnt alot about herself through being a mother; how, with hindsight, she can see that bringing up four young children was all-consuming in the early days of motherhood; and how she completely disagrees with those people who suggest that if you don't have children, then you're not ‘complete'.And finally, we talk about the time she met Jennifer Aniston at a party, and the time she interviewed her (I know!); AND we get real about the elephant in the room - whether or not she thinks my cleaning is as good as her previous cleaner. ;) I sincerely hope that you all enjoy listening to this conversation!Join my private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1870817913309222/?ref=shareFollow me on Instagram: @spinsterhoodreimaginedFollow me on Twitter: @LucyMeggesonEmail me: lucymeggeson@gmail.com

Explicit language warning: some swearing, as usual. In this episode, journalist and author, Anita Bhagwandas and I explore the world of work through the ADHD lens. Without ADHD I would be a completely different worker. Half of my strengths – speed, efficiency, focus, fearlessness, creativity, the ability to multi-task and a seamlessly endless capacity – are undoubtedly down to my ADHD. I don't require breaks or incentives, I just love to work. Some of the associated impairments will also impact the way in which I work, though, such as working memory dysfunction, perfectionism, boredom, imposter syndrome, and overcommitting. Perhaps you are nodding along? The demands to juggle work and home life, to be a caregiver and nurturer to all, to be emotionally available and organized, and often, to keep the house clean, the children happy and the food cooked, are overwhelming, not to mention the constant pressure to hold your own space within a patriarchal employment system. But with ADHD, it's the intensity with which you experience these impairments that differs, and the outcomes. Women with ADHD are more likely to quit a job or be fired; it's a harmful fallacy to think all neurodivergent people have the capacity or privilege required to become an entrepreneur. At the peak of my journalistic career in London, I was able to mask to an extent, but the personal cost of that was having nothing left for anyone else when the working day was done. It took a lot of exploration - of my skill set and my weaknesses - to harness the benefits of my ADHD traits. Anita is a multi-award-winning journalist, social commentator, broadcaster, diversity advocate and Beauty Director with over 10 years' experience working for the UK's top women's titles. Her book UGLY – which uncovers where beauty standards started, unpicks why they've been perpetuated and unmasks how they're still being upheld - is out in the spring of 2023 and is available to pre-order now. Anita shares what it's like to be woman at work with ADHD, how the intersections of her Indian heritage exacerbated feelings of ‘otherness' in a predominantly white work place, and the various ways in which she has tailored her working day to accommodate and actually, make the most of, her ADHD. She also reveals what she's found most challenging about office environments and why water cooler chat is not the one. This episode is for all of you who have messaged me about work – Anita is full of tips and wisdom, and so my hope is that you'll have plenty to use in your own lives, as well as the sense of ‘oh me too!' I always have when talking to this brilliant woman. Find Anita on Instagram at @itsmeanitab Anita's ADHD Coach Steph Camilleri can be found here. I have known and loved Justine since we were in our early 20's when she was the formidable Beauty Director at Marie Claire magazine, and this episode was a wonderful walk through memory lane and a candid conversation about society's evolving views and conversations about beauty and style at every age.
