But never without opposition. It was also the year in which Harry Belafonte, at the peak of his fame, would star in The World, the Flesh and the Devil. The film centres Belafonte's character, Ralph Burton, as the last man on earth. A Black man at a time when the country was wrangling with desegregation. Ralph is joined by Sarah and Ben: White survivors who enter what was for a while his world. This episode focuses on race and racism and I am so lucky to have two amazing guests to help us put the plot and frustrations into context.Mark Bould is a professor of Film and Literature at the University of West England, Bristol. He has written/edited extensively about science fiction cinema. Stéphanie Larrieux is the associate director of the Centre for the study of Race and Ethnicity at Brown University. Imagine this man in some vast city, New York or London. Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell!”*** Fredric Brown condensed this text to read "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long". Brown's short story then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and builds a more complete plot around them. “Knock” was originally published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and the Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). And now it gets another adaptation – in this episode. Send us a textI couldn't tell you the date, but I remember sitting in my parent's basement, my buddy Dave was over and spending the night. We were staying up late, drinking why too much Dr. Pepper and eating all the popcorn we could get our hands on. We were watching late night movies and having a blast like most 10-year-olds.That's when we watched what I would later figure out, was my first Post Apocalyptic Film…The Omega Man with Charlen Heston. It wouldn't be my last. The idea of a world where all the people were gone and you could just run around and grab whatever you wanted was pretty cool for a 10 year old. I have to admit it was pretty cool as a 16 year old as well when I watched Night of the Comet.Since then, I have seen them all…Ok, not all of them. But, from The Last Man on Earth, to A Boy and His Dog, from Death Race 2000, to Road Warrior, and from Escape from New York, to finally Children of Men (which by the way is the best post-apocalyptic movie every)We could spend hours or maybe even days talking about the post-apocalyptic genre. From Books, to films, to computer games and yes, table top roleplaying games. But Mike, Christina, and I are going to try our best a focus on the genre concepts of the post-apocalyptic scene and how to bring them into your roleplaying games.Let's start with you Mike, Do you remember your fist taste of the Post Apocalypse?
Richard Matheson's classic I AM LEGEND has been adapted several times over the years. This week, we discuss THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, possibly the best version of this post-apocalyptic classic featuring a sublime performance by Vincent Price. Alone in a world buried by endless snow and ice the last man on Earth drifts through a twilight of silence and memory. Time has lost all meaning... The Coming of the Ice by G. Peyton Wertenbaker. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. The year was 1926 and although there had been science fiction stories in magazines, there had never been an entire magazine devoted to science fiction. Hugo Gernsback was the man who would change the course of science fiction with the birth of Amazing Stories magazine which began publishing in April 1926. In case you were wondering the Hugo Award is named after this sci-fi pioneer. The first two magazines were filled with reprints, stories that had already been published, by Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and Edgar Allen Poe among others. G. Peyton Wertenbaker's short story The Man From the Atom appeared in that first issue but it too was a reprint, having been previously published 8 months earlier in Science and Invention magazine which was also published by Gernsback.Wertenbaker was born in New Castle, Delaware in 1907, he wrote a handful of sci-fi stories and then turned his attention to other pursuits, literary and otherwise. He served on the editorial board of Fortune magazine from 1933 to 1938, and became a contributing editor to Time Magazine in 1939. During World War Two he served as an air combat intelligence officer in the Pacific. In 1958 he joined NASA as a speechwriter, eventually becoming chief historian of the Aerospace Medical Division. The story you are about to hear was the first original paid story to appear in Amazing Stories in June 1926 on page 232, The Coming of the Ice by G. Peyton Wertenbaker…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Of all the irksome, frustrating, maddening discoveries—was there no way of keeping it discovered? Today Matt & Todd discuss the 1968 Sci-Fi Classic: Planet of the Apes, directed by Franklin J Schaffner, based on a novel by Pierre Boulle.Starring: Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans and Kim Hunter.Screenplay co-credited to Michael Wilson and Rod Serling.A groundbreaking success when it first appeared in 1968; Planet of the Apes is a rapid-paced fish-out-of-water tale of a group of astronauts who crash-land on a mysterious planet inhabited by a civilization of advanced apes determined to destroy humanity. The original Planet of the Apes feels more at home in the realm of Star Trek and Twilight Zone (also created by original Planet of the Apes screenwriter: Rod Serling.)Even if you have not seen the film you're likely aware of the ending, and some of the more memorable lines. This is a film that still holds up as pure entertainment, award-wining makeup effects that still look remarkable, and an engaging plot that offers something enduring to consider about human nature. If this is your first time watching, we'd love to hear what you think. If you like this film we can recommend:The Omega Man, Last Man on Earth, World Without End, The Terminator, The Time Travelers*, Star Trek (in particular the classic series) and The Twilight Zone.----------Follow Matt on Letterboxd, Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois, as Marcus at Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful and follow what we follow at Once Upon a Geek and The Fade Out Podcast

https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/11/15/pofcrit-podcast-2024-jake-diamond-on-i-am-legend-francis-lawrence-2007/ In this podcast we will discuss the often-overlooked 2007 adaptation of Richard Matheson's I Am Legend. Following Will Smith's rendition of Dr Robert Neville, a virologist and last man on earth, it focuses on the psychological deterioration and complex need for coping mechanisms one would face when confronted with complete existentialism. We will discuss the difficulties of adaptation and where focus can often be shifted with minute changes, forcing different interpretations; as well as how the 2007 version - with its complicated production - is the most poignant when it comes to the horror of isolation. Additionally, we will discuss a key element, which is the paradoxical situation Robert Neville finds himself in, because as the tagline states: The Last man on Earth isn't alone.
Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we're talking about time travel, paradoxes, and finding a penny in your pocket. “Look, a penny!” Author Richard Matheson is best known as a master of the suspenseful twist. One of his most famous works, I Am Legend, has been adapted as The Omega Man, The Last Man on Earth, and the eponymous Will Smith version. For television, he contributed to Star Trek, created Duel and The Night Stalker, and penned some of the most famous episodes of The Twilight Zone. But one of his most enduring, and endearing, films is a low-budget romance starring Christopher Reeve (fresh off his turn in the tights as Superman) and Jane Seymour. The pair play a couple separated by sixty years but brought together by hypnosis-induced time travel in story that features a signature Matheson twist. We're checking in to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island to see if Somewhere in Time is worth the wait. This is Chronovember! Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where we dive deep into the shelves to bring you some of the most intriguing, thought-provoking, and often overlooked gems in cinema history. Today, we're venturing into the realms of science fiction and the boundaries of human perception with four films that, each in their own right, challenge our understanding of reality, humanity, and the universe at large.First up, we have "The Quiet Earth" from 1985. This New Zealand sci-fi classic explores the profound and eerie calm after a scientific experiment gone awry seems to leave a lone scientist as the last man on Earth. The film is celebrated not just for its intriguing premise, but also for its breathtaking final scene, which has had film fans arguing for decades. The solitude and desolation captured in the film are palpable, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate the more introspective side of science fiction.Next up is "Enemy Mine," also from 1985. This film stands out for its exploration of themes of racism, camaraderie, and survival under the most unlikely circumstances. Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.'s performances are the heart of this story. They portray two soldiers from opposing sides of an interstellar war, stranded on a desolate planet. Their journey from enemies to friends is a powerful commentary on understanding and tolerance that resonates just as strongly today.Moving on to a slightly earlier film, I am recommending the mind-bending world of "Altered States" from 1980. Directed by Ken Russell and based on the novel by Paddy Chayefsky, this movie takes us on a psychedelic journey through the human psyche. In it, William Hurt's character experiments on himself with a mixture of sensory deprivation and hallucinogenic drugs. The visual effects used to depict his experiences were groundbreaking at the time and remain impressively evocative, painting an often disturbing picture of the potential and peril of pushing the boundaries of human consciousness.Lastly, we have the environmental cautionary tale "Silent Running" from 1972. Directed by Douglas Trumbull, who was known for his special effects work on "2001: A Space Odyssey." This film tells the story of a botanist on a space station dedicated to preserving Earth's last natural environments. It's a poignant, ahead-of-its-time commentary on environmentalism and loneliness The highlights are Bruce Dern's compelling performance and the unforgettable presence of the small, yet endearing, service robots, Huey, Dewey, and Louie (love em). Each of these films explore themes that are as relevant today as they were when they were first released. From the solitude of "The Quiet Earth" and the unlikely alliance in "Enemy Mine" to the exploratory depths of "Altered States" and the environmental message of "Silent Running." Like all good SF films, they invite us to question, reflect, and marvel at the possibilities beyond our current understanding. So, whether you're a long-time fan of the genre or just looking for something different to watch this weekend, these films should provide plenty of food for thought. Thanks for joining me on this journey through the stars and the depths of the human mind. Until next time, keep those VCRs powered up.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Recently, he posted some of his sitcom writing rules on twitter that we found to be super spot on and we wanted to talk to him about it. There's a lot of extremely practical advice in this one. Animation Season returns... with one of Pixar's most important movies, and one with a prescient message. Andrew Stanton had pitched an idea about the last robot on earth back in 1994. It would take eight years for the project to materialise properly, and was originally conceived as Robinson Crusoe and The Last Man on Earth, becoming a Planet of the Apes-style humans-as-aliens reveal, before its robotic love story blossomed, and along with it, a stark warning for the future of humanity, our reliance on AI, and a suggestion that following your "directive" might not be the ideal choice to make.He never intended to make any political statements about environmental issues or climate change. And he never intended for WALL-E's design to look like Johnny 5.He did, however, fully intend to use the songs of Hello, Dolly!I would love to hear your thoughts on WALL-E !CONTACT....
