You've heard the story before: a Maine telekinetic teen snaps after her bullies play a prank that goes too far… but what if the soundtrack has third-wave ska? That's right, consider this Carrie vol. 3 - we're getting matching tattoos, confessing our love for Shirley Manson, and having our minds blown (apart) by THE RAGE: CARRIE 2!! All this, plus Hot Mom Defenestration Syndrome, “They're All Gonna Laugh At You” remixes, telekinetic Pinocchios, “plain Jane-ing” of Mena Suvari, the Londons' Prestige, an epic butt rock soundtracks rant, and a raving edition of a Choose Your Own Deathventure - complete with a top tier #GetBunked!! My guest today is Shirley Manson. Since 1994, she's been the lead singer of the band Garbage, and she is a bona fide rock icon. The two of us worked together on a different podcast called The Jump, which Shirley hosted and I helped produce. It was a dream of mine to get Shirley as the host of that podcast, partly because, as you're about to hear, she has one of the greatest voices, and I could listen to her talk about anything. And so I'm especially excited to listen to her today tell me about a song that changed her life. Thanks to Sonos for their support of the podcast. Check out sonos.com.For more, visit songexploder.net/keychange.And check out the Song Exploder episode with Garbage from 2014, featuring Shirley and her bandmate Butch Vig talking about how they made their song “Felt.”
This week on PopCultX, we dive headfirst into the bittersweet brilliance of Pee-wee Herman and his biggest adventure yet: Pee-wee as Himself, the brand-new HBO documentary that explores the life, legacy, and layered persona of Paul Reubens. From the kaleidoscopic chaos of Pee-wee's Playhouse to the cultural fallout of the '90s, we reflect on how Reubens' art & controversies shaped an entire generation's sense of humor and imagination. Spoiler alert: we both highly recommend you watch it.Plus, Gabe drops a music rec that hits all the right Gen X buttons: the latest album by Garbage. Shirley Manson and the gang are back, and we talk about why they still matter in 2025.Nostalgia, neon, and a little bit of rebellion—just how we like it.
Auf dem neuen Garbage-Album «Let All That We Imagine Be the Light» verteilt Rock-Ikone Shirley Manson nicht nur Kinnhaken, sondern auch Hoffnung.

Before You I Just Forget". Shirley Manson of Garbage is cooler than ever, and the gang takes a nostalgic trip down memory lane remembering KROQ radio legend Jed the Fish — and their first radio gigs. Sarah shares the reason behind her famously judgey ways, and Glen Powell is having a major moment in Hollywood. Would your teenage self be proud of your life today? Plus, a hot debate: who are big lips really for? And Vinnie drops another classic story time.
Je me trompe ? I'm only happy when it rains.
On today's Talkhouse Podcast we've got one of those episodes pairing an artist you've surely heard of, pun intended, with one you likely haven't, but will. It's Shirley Manson and Stephen McCall. Manson is of course the singer for the long-running, Grammy-nominated, chart-topping, Bond-theme-performing band Garbage, which hit it big right out of the gate in the mid-1990s. Manson and her bandmates have assembled a varied catalog since, including the biting 2021 album No Gods, No Masters. As you'll hear in this chat, Garbage is still going strong, working on a new record that goes in kind of a different direction than the last one. Manson has always been a great talker; she even hosted her own podcast for a few years called The Jump, on which she talked with other musicians about the song that provided their breakthrough. She's a huge fan of music, so it's no surprise that she was excited to chat with today's other guest, Stephen McCall. McCall, like Manson, is Scottish—that's hard to miss—though he hasn't been making music nearly as long. His debut album under the name Constant Follower came out in 2021 and was met with loads of critical acclaim in Scotland for his quiet, heartfelt, frequently intense songs—think Bon Iver or Low or even McCall's favorite, Talk Talk. This week sees the release of the second proper Constant Follower album, called The Smile You Send Out Returns To You, another intense set that covers some of McCall's intense personal journey, including addiction, fatherhood, and the violent attack he suffered that still affects his memory. Check out the song “Almost Time to Go” from The Smile You Send Out right here. In this lively but deep conversation, Manson and McCall talk about that awful attack and how it led, eventually, to Constant Follower. They also talk about longevity in the music business, the creative process—including The Artist's Way that's become a frequent topic in Talkhouse chats—and lots more, including the time that Rivers Cuomo laughed in Manson's face—in a helpful way. Enjoy. Chapters: 0:00 – Intro 2:25 – Start of the chat Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Shirley Manson and Stephen McCall for chatting. In recognition of Kurt Cobain's February birthday (he would have been 58 on 2/20/25), and 30 years since the release of Garbage's first album with the hits songs Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains, we're bringing back our epic conversation with fellow Packers fan Butch Vig. Catch the VIDEO with Butch recalling a raucous night at the Hollywood Palladium with the Butthole Surfers and L7 where he lost Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain took a long walk home. WATCH HERE: https://youtube.com/shorts/ObnU5pTK9gk This episode includes stories about how Garbage was once forced to play a gig middle of the night in a Serbian castle; why the band's lead singer Shirley Manson nearly didn't pass her audition; and the fact that band members ALWAYS lose 20 IQ points when they go on tour. In episode 133 of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Dimond talks to the co-founder of Urban Decay and Caliray, Wende Zomnir. Wende Zomnir is beauty industry royalty. This is the woman behind the Naked Palette, Urban Decay's now-iconic 2010 launch that ensured this already wildly successful brand would go down in beauty history. Wende, alongside the tech mastermind that is Sandy Lerner, founded Urban Decay in 1996 with a distinctly grunge, “punk” if you will aesthetic. That in and of itself was revolutionary, when you consider that the most popular brands at the time were the likes of Clinique who were championing that very clean, very fresh look. Urban Decay was dark and bold and edgy, and thanks to some serious guerrilla marketing from Wende it quickly found its way into the hands of Gwen Stefani and Garbage front woman Shirley Manson. Urban Decay was acquired by the L'Oréal group in 2012, with Wende staying on as CCO until 2022, soon after launching her latest beauty venture- Caliray, a brand that harnesses Wende's love of and expertise in beauty with her longstanding passion for the environment and sustainability, with industry sources estimating that the brand generated between $20 and $25 million USD in retail sales in 2023. In this conversation, Wende shares what it was like officially working with Gwen Stefani about 20 years after hunting her down at a music festival, what she believes it takes to create a truly iconic beauty product, and the full story behind the now infamous Urban Decay Naked Palette.Read more at glowjournal.comFollow Caliray on Instagram @caliray.Stay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemdimond and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com Hosted on Acast. When understanding how the band came up with the name "Garbage," Butch Vig once wrote in his 1993 studio journal about the creative process; "I hope that all this garbage will become something beautiful," and that's exactly what happened. The perfect storm brought Scotland's Shirley Manson all the way to Madison, Wisconsin to join forces with three musicians to shake things up and create something beautifully their own in the mid 1990s. Tanya Pearson is a Public Historian and Director of the Women of Rock Oral History Project, a collection of digital interviews and written transcripts documenting the lives and careers of (women-identified) rock musicians. A documentary film based on the interviews is currently in production as well as an oral history of rock music. Why Marianne Faithfull Matters, her contribution to the University of Texas Press' Music Matters Series, was published in July, 2021. Her “work” has appeared in The Washington Post, Bust Magazine, Memoir Mixtapes, PopMatters, and some blogs, and journals. Pearson discovered a “frustrating lack of information” about the pioneering all-female bands she had followed as a teenager, and set out to close the musical gender gap by collecting oral histories of influential women rockers and thus beginning what has now become the "Women of Rock Oral History Project". When she's not working she enjoys writing, rock climbing, playing in her band Feminine Aggression, and watching The Golden Girls with her dog Andrew. Ryan Newcomb is the owner of In The Q Records, a vinyl-focused indie record label with one mission: Help musicians, both past and present, bring their art to life through the magic and wonderment of vinyl records. www.intheqrecords.com www.womenofrock.org @womenofrockohp www.youtube.com/@WomenofrockOHP

Influential filmmaker, music video director, and innovative kid's TV show creator Scott Stuckey is our guest. Grandson of the originator of Stuckey's, the 60s yellow-roofed, highway, pecan praline and gift shop franchise, Scott is quite the successful entrepreneur as well. Born in Eastman, Georgia and relocating to Washington, D.C., where his father W.S. Stuckey, Jr. was a Congressman for 10 years, Scott was attracted to the fledgling punk music scene, forging friendships that would affect his future in the film and music industry. While living in Athens, Georgia, he recorded bands in his home studio, working on projects with R.E.M. and Vic Chessnut. In 2003, he created Pancake Mountain, a music based, cable-access children's show that became a public-access cult classic featuring guests like The White Stripes, Eddie Vedder, Kings of Leon, Katy Perry, Bright Eyes, Shirley Manson, George Clinton, Chuck Leavell, and actress Juliette Lewis. Beyond those achievements, he directed music videos for Chessnut, Widespread Panic, and Garbage, to name a few. While visiting family in the Golden Isles, Something In The Water cohost, Sean Clark, made his acquaintance, leading the two to work together on a Pine Box Dwellers music video for “Devil's Den”, an original song cowritten by Sean and Uncle Dave Griffin, which made its internet debut two days ago. https://youtu.be/esl-hSEWzsI?si=7JRJU1LMkI-cZFf9https://www.facebook.comcautionlightmedia/https://www.instagram.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/https://www.facebook.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/somethinginthewaterpodcast@gmail.comhttps://somethinginthewater.captivate.fmhttps://www.patreon.com/somethinginthewater

Canadian alternative pop artist Apricity presents her new single 'Allison Wonderland', a clever adrenaline-filled composition about imagining and seeking the type of relationship, love and companion you most want. A song that is, at the same time, a light forewarning about creating that perfect person in your mind. With an edge reminiscent of early Avril Lavigne and fueled by the creative inspiration of artists like Shirley Manson, Alanis Morrissette and Debbie Harry, Apricity dishes out attitude and melody in equal amounts. With her moniker derived from the Latin word meaning “basking in the warmth of the sun", Apricity's music offers alternative pop flair through the prism of 90s-inspired vibes with earlier singles permeated by more Evanescence-inspired dark tones. This new single follows 'All My Lies', released in 2021, and 'The Fear', released in 2022. "This song reflects the dream of having the perfect relationship that most want, even if it is a dream away. I was lucky again to work with Greg Critchley - an amazing songwriter - along with Thomas at Exeter Sound Studios and mixing engineer Vic Florencia," says Apricity. On 'Allison Wonderland', Apricity worked with a world-class team, including Toronto-based Juno-nominated and platinum awarded music producer Thomas McKay at Exeter Sound Studios, US-based Canadian songwriter Greg Critchley and legendary mixer / engineer Vic Florencia (Olivia Rodrigo, Hilary Duff, Blue Rodeo, Steven Page, Snoop Dog, Tanya Tagaq, Esthero, Joss Stone). #NewMusic #Storytelling #GreatMusic #SongWriting

Welcome to the Best Games Ever show Episode 52: the best game with a ginger protagonist. Cal Kestis of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor is just the latest in a long line of Gaming Redheads, an esteemed group that includes such celebrated characters as Official Femshep, Joanna Dark, and what's-her-face out of Heavenly Sword. And it makes me swell with pride to see this proud tradition continuing. Listen. I'm not even a proper ginger, but my beard has the reddish hue of muddled European stock, and I look a bit auburn with edge lighting, so I think that basically makes me part of the ginger community. Therefore I can confidently say that growing up ginger, especially in the UK, is a mixed bag. As prejudices go, it's a fairly innocuous one to be at the receiving end of: mostly just daft banter, nothing particularly harrowing or sinister. But you are relentlessly considered fair game. Barely a day goes by where you don't hear a joke about gingers on the TV. It's a feature of your genetics that marks you out for endless ribbing and bullying, but it so rarely tips over into anything more sinister that it feels almost petty to complain about it. It's not remotely like living as part of a minority that experiences real prejudice, racism, or persecution. And so, the Ginger Experience is sort of like living with a permanently stuck sneeze: a source of perennial bother that you can't do anything about. Where we are endowed with enormous privilege, though, is in representation in the media. Loads of the coolest people alive are gingers. Bryce Dallas Howard, Conan O'Brien, Shirley Manson, Michael friggin' Fassbender? The list is endless. Nicole Kidman, there's another one. Damien Lewis. Ed, er, Ed Sheeran. Um. Ignore that one, we're not claiming him. The point is, gingers do pretty well in the media, and enjoy much more positive representation than plenty of other minority groups. This holds double true for the world of video games, where you can't swing a sporran without smacking a dozen ginger protagonists. There are more ginger video game characters than there are people in Wales. Probably. I haven't done the numbers. For a group that makes up less than two percent of the global population, we do extraordinarily well at getting ourselves on screen. But which is the best game with a Ginger protagonist? Our panellists, as we've discussed, have a bounty of options for this one. But which redheaded games stand above the rest? And how exactly is everyone interpreting the word "ginger"? Who, out of Kelsey, Connor, and Tom, is going to be this week's biggest smart-arse? In order to find out, you need to watch or listen to this podcast here. Disclaimer: Unfortunately, something went wrong with John's audio this week due to a recording error with the provider we use. After a ton of editing, this was the best Tyler could do. It's not that bad, but it sounds like John is in a really echo-y room. We totally apologize for this as this is not the type of quality we want to deliver. But nonetheless, we still wanted to bring you what was on our minds this week.Last week was absolutely huge for pop-punk as you all remember the blink-182 and Tom DeLonge reunion was made official with the announcement of new music and a new world tour. Well, this week tickets went on sale for that tour and because of how Ticketmaster is doing ticket pricing (which is what they call Dynamic Pricing), it's causing a lot of uproar in the scene. We're going to talk about this and I'm going to say ahead of time before we start talking about it: This is something that CANNOT work long-term. It's a real problem. But we're going to talk about this in detail because John and I have some thoughts on this as I'm sure you do too. But on a lighter note, we're also going to be talking about Shaq and his mosh-pit record, Garbage's Shirley Manson shitting in her partner's breakfast, and how birdsong is the way to help anxiety.Support the showSign-up for our weekly newsletter!http://allpunkedup.com/subscribe Are you a fan of the scene and want to be a guest on the pod?
