In May of 1996, California Polytechnic freshman Kristin Smart attended a birthday party for a friend on campus. She was walked back to her dorm by Paul Flores, never to be seen or heard from again. Flores had been suspected in her murder since the beginning, but hardly any evidence could prove Kristin was even dead. New developments have led to Flores' arrest and new information about his past. Daisy was able to find some light within the darkness, though. She and her older brother, Charlie, became sexual assault survivor advocates and HuffPost named Daisy one of their “13 Most Fearless Teens of 2013.” Netflix even caught wind of Daisy's incredible story and the lack of justice she received and produced the documentary Audrie & Daisy in 2016. Audrie Pott was another sexual assault survivor documented in the film who took her own life in 2012 due to the trauma and persistent bullying – the same ordeal Daisy had gone through. But soon, tragedy would strike the Coleman family again. We send so much love and light to Daisy's surviving brothers, Melinda's sons, Logan and Charlie, and the rest of the Coleman family as well as everyone at SafeBAE. Catherine Daisy Coleman was born March 30, 1997 in Albany, Missouri to Melinda Moeller, a veterinarian, and Michael Coleman, a physician. Her family gravitated towards calling her by her middle name, Daisy, and rarely used her first name. She was a bright little girl, so it was only appropriate that the name Daisy stuck. 14-year-old Daisy was a varsity cheerleader and competitive dancer. She was a popular girl who loved to entertain and be a social butterfly. However, that all changed on the night of January 8, 2012. Daisy Coleman was sexually assaulted at the age of 14 and the aftermath documented what rape culture is like in a small town. Years later, Daisy would grow up to co-found a non-profit organization called Safe BAE to raise awareness of sexual violence among youth. Unfortunately, the trauma of Daisy's past could not cease, and she took her own life. Then, just four months later, her mother, Melinda, also died by suicide. This Sunday we discuss Daisy and Melinda's story and why it is so important to open the discussion about trauma, mental health, and suicide. Sunday, Dec 13, only on Blackbird.
On December 24, 2008, a frantic 911 call came in to Covina, California dispatch. The caller begged for emergency services stating “he's still shooting out there. He's shooting my whole family. My mom's house is on fire!” Just before the attack, neighbors saw a man dressed as Santa Claus approach the house on Knollcrest Drive carrying what looked like gifts. At just 15 years old, Kris Pedretti was sexually assaulted in her home by the man known then as the East Area Rapist. It wasn't until years later that Kris found out this was also the man known as the Golden State Killer. Hear, in her own words, what happened that night and why she chose to provide a victim impact statement and come face-to-face with her perpetrator. We dedicate this episode to Phyllis Henneman, who was Joseph James DeAngelo's first known victim. Her memory will never be forgotten. linktr.ee/blackbirdadvocacy

At 17 years old, Chrystul Kizer was arrested for the murder of Randall Volar III. But, you see, Chrystul's circumstances led her to kill. It is an unfortunate consequence of what she had been through; a life Chrystul had no other way of escaping. Chrystul's defense team contends that Randall Volar III had been sex trafficking Chrystul since she was 16 years old and that she acted in self-defense against a man who had brutalized her for far too long. https://chicagobond.org/2020/06/22/community-groups-pay-400000-bond-to-free-trafficking-survivor-chrystul-kizer-in-kenosha-wi/ Defense Fund: https://fundrazr.com/81gAq7?ref=ab_f9Jdo7_ab_1Wu2d3BUKNs1Wu2d3BUKNs Petition: https://www.change.org/p/drop-all-charges-against-incarcerated-trafficking-survivor-chrystul-kizer?fbclid=IwAR3W8l7rjfJ7GQUD2DvzBXmBDm-Z4Y4oZI36MZttzn5OqLf7aG4DXilpk98&use_react=false https://polarisproject.org/ References: Holcombe, Madeline (2020-06-24). Special Episode shared from The Misery Machine. Where is Kimberly Moreau? We at Blackbird are always willing to help victims' families in any way we can, so we took another opportunity to share a story and get the word out from a sister podcast. Please help in any way you can! This week, Drewby and Yergy shift gears to a local case that has haunted the community of Jay, Maine for 3 decades - one that we hope will soon be solved so that she can be laid to rest and her family can have some long deserved closure. This week we are discussing the disappearance of Kimberly Moreau. Kim Moreau was a beautiful 17 year old girl that went missing from the small mill town of Jay, ME after skipping her junior prom following a fight with her then boyfriend. It is alleged that she spent the day with a friend and two 25 year old men joyriding in a white Trans AM, although the events of May 10th and 11th, 1986 unclear and subject to wide rumor and speculation. Kim's family has never given up hope - handling much of the investigative legwork themselves after local and state police proved to be grossly negligent in the handling of Kim's case. There have been many extensive searches in recent years, and police allege that of all of the missing person cases in the state, Kim's case is the one in which they receive the most frequent tips, even after 3 decades. We discuss the background of Kim's case - discussing Kim as a person, and providing details into what is alleged to have happened during the day she disappeared. We also discuss some of the more recent searches, some of the theories of what happened to her, and delve into the backgrounds of the folks tied to her disappearance. Today's case takes us to Ireland. We wanted to give a little thank you to our Irish listeners, so here it is! This case is a different take on domestic violence, but none-the-less, still involves violence perpetrated against an intimate partner.
