Ever since my friend, Mr. Evan Olwell sent me this story, I haven't been able to get it out of my head. It's haunting really. He sent me a video from the criminally underrated YouTube Channel: Jake Evans Storyteller. Here is the video so you can show him some support. A short walk south of the village, following the footpath along the banks of the Glaslyn leads to Beddgelert's most famous historical feature; 'Gelert's Grave'. According to legend, the stone monument in the field marks the resting place of 'Gelert', the faithful hound of the medieval Welsh Prince Llewelyn the Great. I also tell the story of Greyfriars Bobby as an afterthought. I've been meaning to tell that legend for a long time. Maggie Webster is my fantastic guest this week, five years to the day since I broadcast my first Nostalgia Interviews podcast episode. Maggie teaches Religious Education at Edge Hill University in Lancashire, and we learn that she did a PhD in Lampeter which explored how people become witches on social media. Maggie discusses her fieldwork in which she interviewed 13 witches who ranged in age from 20 to 70, and how among other things they fought back against stereotypes. We talk about how there was a coming out of the broom cupboard in the 1990s, through magazine articles, films and TV series but how even today it is very difficult to find in-person covens. We find out how Maggie was destined to do this research on contemporary witchcraft, we learn about her research drivers and how it was as much a hobby as work as she would read all fiction and watch films about witches in her downtime. We talk about Witch Lit and The Witches of Eastwick and how films today are less heteronormative than they were a few decades ago. Maggie has compared the two versions of Hocus Pocus, thirty years apart, in terms of showing how we have changed as a society. We discuss Eurovision 2023 which was just about to take place when we recorded the interview, and we learn that Maggie was brought up in a working class family in Bangor, North Wales. She talks about the role of music as a child especially listening to Leo Sayer when cleaning the house, and hearing her Dad singing ‘Don't Worry Be Happy' to help when she was anxious. We move on to talk about the Welsh hiraeth and nostalgic longing in relation to Beddgelert, and she talks about the differences between the campus where she works and that of Lampeter, discussing along the way subcultures and Dungeons and Dragons. Maggie then talks about how she ended up going to university and the importance of education having come from a background where her mother was not allowed to have one. We find out why Maggie wanted to study religion and the importance of pluralism and we discuss her eclectic religious predilections. (You also get to hear my confession regarding church and the Top 40 singles chart.) We also find out how Maggie learns from what she has done and how it has made her the person (and academic) she is today. Then, at the end of the interview, Maggie reflects on her educational journey where becoming an academic was never on the cards, but that she has always been set on a path where she can help and make a difference to people's lives.

The news has done a U-Turn....we are not now going to fry and die of thirst...we are going to drown as we now have floods....so the scaremongering has changed direction. Along with all the strikes among the buses, trains and docks our Barristers are going on strike....so lock your doors....you couldn't make it up...does this lot have any consideration for anyone but themselves. There are a lot of complaints about bikes on the road and how idiots can't be traced.....electric bikes are being ridden at 30 mph despite the 5 mph limit.....and the lycra boys think they own the roads....answers simple ...make them require a licence like other motorists.....or is that too obvious. We have seen the last of donkey rides in New Brighton....the cruelty to animals brigade have been on the warpath.....I can't say I disagree but why has it taken so long to come to this conclusion....I remember having a donkey ride 70 years ago I have recently been approached by a company who are working on famous legends around the country to present on Channel 4......they have spotted my YouTube clip of The Legend of Beddgelert and asked me for details of it.....I told them how it came about and they said they would be in touch.....so we'll see what happens.....I have sent you the music from the clip and the story which I have set to poetry and is narrated by Paul Damian.....get your handkerchief ready.
30 year old Teleri is a new entrant farmer who, despite not growing up on a farm, has always wanted to be in agriculture - announcing to her Mum at the age of four that she wanted to be a 'lady farmer'! Teleri has recently began a 10 year tenancy on a 100acre farm in Nantmor, Beddgelert with her fiancé Ned (who also isn't from a farming background!) and sheepdogs Roy and Ralff. She works off-farm for FUW (Farmers' Union of Wales) and is also on the Nature Friendly Farming Network steering group for Wales.
Is there any truth to Wales' most famous folk tale? Did a dog named Gelert really fight with a gigantic wolf for the life of the Prince of Wales' son and heir? Join MARK REES (Ghosts of Wales/ Curious Wales) as he goes in search of the secret origins of the tragic tale, in which a heroic hound pays the ultimate price for being man's best friend. It's a journey which begins with a piece of folklore, and takes some unexpected twists through Wild Wales, Welsh culture, and even the French Revolution.

All this tripe about political correctness where you can't say this and you can't say that because it might offend someone, is becoming very tiresome....not to mention the 100 different genders we can choose from...this just proves how polite and tolerant the general public are by putting up with this garbage....when one of these publicity seeking characters come up with, for example, the expression"ladies and gentlemen" possibly being offensive or the many other stupid opinions it needs someone to tell them in no uncertain terms where to go....and when the P.C. brigade rise up-tell them as well....we are being manipulated by a bunch of morons whose only chance of a bit of "fame" is to come up with stupid ideas ....which actually offend ME!!!....but obviously the majority don't count anymore. For me to respect and enjoy entertainment there has to be actual talent....I have nothing against TV personalities making their fortune with very little of it...for example the likes of Jonathan Ross or Graham Norton who I appreciate are very popular but anyone can do what they do and don't get me going on Ant and Dec.....so I was delighted to watch Jeff Lynne's E.L.O. on the BBC live concert....what a great show with wonderful songs and brilliant musicians.....THAT'S TALENT!!! I have been watching a programme on caravanning with Shane Richie who visits caravan sites and raves on about how wonderful they are in a none stop effort to convince people that this is how to spend your holidays...as opposed to going abroad....all very well but old Shane arrives at each site and receives the biggest and best luxury static on the site... I am surprised that the ladies England football team is called the "Lionesses"...which is obviously a female term....are they not suppose to have a choice as to what they are?....perhaps the "England Liongenderfluids"...this would make more sense in our politically correct world.....f.....come on ladies let's start winning the big games. The song this week is one I wrote for my pal Paul Damian and is a track on the album I produced for him which includes the now famous How To Say Llanfairpwll...etc. which has ha 2.2 million hits on YouTube......this one is called The Legend of Beddgelert and is about the demise of a dog, named Gelert, which belonged to Llewellyn,a Welsh Prince back in the 13th century....it is a very sad tale....the dog's grave is visited by many tourists through the summer months in the actual village of Beddgelert (which means grave of Gelert).....since putting it on YouTube it has had 10 thousand hits....and a lot of nice comments....so here it is...hankies at the ready...The Legend of Beddgelert

Meet Sabine Nouvert, a National Trust Ranger in Beddgelert who’s been working on a rather unusual project: conserving seaside butterflies in inland Wales!
Episode 5 of the National Trust Podcast heads to picturesque Snowdonia in North Wales. Join Kate in the village of Beddgelert, located at the base of Mount Snowdon and a gateway to some of the UK’s most exciting walks. Find out how the Trust is making some of this spectacular landscape more accessible.
Helen Mark follows Snowdonia Marathon and meets some of the people tackling this challenging course. Starting and finishing in Llanberis, the race encircles Wales' highest mountain of Snowdon, and rises to over a thousand feet in places. Andy John, Bishop of Bangor is taking on the Marathon for the third time, and he describes the sensation from running the course as being lost in the landscape but found in yourself. But he's dreading the twenty-two mile mark when he'll reach the 1200ft climb at Bwlch y Groes or "gap of the cross", before descending back into Llanberis for the finish. Helen stops at the ten-mile mark to meet Arwyn Owen at Hafod y Llan farm to find out how Hydro-Electric Power is the new cash crop in this rugged environment. She also meets Phil Owen at Llechwedd Caverns to discover how the area became the slate-mining capital of the world. Both Phil's Father and Grandfather worked in the mine, but Phil became a musician and serenades Helen on his ukulele, three hundred feet below the surface. Helen hands out water and energy gels with volunteers from the Snowdonia Society at the halfway point in Beddgelert and speaks to Margaret Thomas about Esme Kirby, the remarkable woman who set-up the organisation, before returning to Llanberis to greet a weary Andy John as he's crosses the finishing line.
The song I have sent you this week answers a simple question…”Who discovered America?”….you’re thinking Columbus…WRONG!!..it was Prince Madoc in 1170…300 years before Columbus….this song sung by my mate Paul Damian tells the story….after depressing you last week with Beddgelert this should give you a lift…the song is off the same album I composed and produced for Paul…I love this song…and there is no-one in the world could sing it better….the album is available from my website….www.donwoods.co.uk 2.Did you know that William and Kate have had a baby girl?...if you didn’t know you must have been asleep for the last week….sadly the only break from this on the news was the election run up…talk about no news….SURELY there must be something else going on in the world….suddenly all these “royal correspondents” come out of the woodwork grovelling away saying how wonderful it all is….oh we are so lucky to have such a royal family who care so much about their subjects….I don’t think. 3.It’s finally over and Dave goes back into number 10……personally I couldn’t see any other result….no matter what anyone says it’s about personalities and I’m afraid Ed didn’t have any despite his many lessons on how to present himself….if you aint got it …you aint got it….and as for Ed Balls he wont be missed….I think it would have been a different story if David Miliband had been in the mix. I thought there were two main turning points….Cameron’s plugging of “the mess” Labour left him with last time…and how they cleaned it up…great angle I thought…and Ed involving that idiot Russell Brand…big mistake….all Dave has to do now is get rid of Gove and he’s cracked it...so perhaps now we’ll get a bit of decent TV…probably not. 4.There have been a lot of celebrations regarding the anniversary of VE Day….although somewhat overshadowed by the elections….it is great to see old film of the dancing in the streets etc….great stuff…one of the best gigs I ever did was a VE Day fancy dress do at a local restaurant a while back…everyone entered into the spirit and I sang all the songs from the time “There’ll always be an England…..”…etc…it was really good fun and as the place was packed out the guy who had a parachute on his back wasn’t too popular….a real good laugh. 5.There is a move afoot to get people to vote for a national bird…apparently we haven’t got one…so some bloke is driving around with a loudspeaker on the top of his car asking people to vote…the robin is one of the favourites (which would get my vote)…the barn owl is another…..but if it was up to me our national bird would be Katherine Jenkins….LUVLY!!

The song I have sent you this week is one I wrote for the Welsh album I composed for Paul Damian and tells the legend of Beddgelert. I’m sending this one because we have just spent a few days walking in the heart of Snowdonia and it doesn’t get any better….we also visited a Slate Museum in Llanberis which was incredible…it is built on the site of a Quarry and is mind blowing…and is FREE!!...it is a credit to the Land of Song. The news has been covering the terrible tragedy in Napal….and the journalists have been at there usual mindless interviews with families worried about there relatives caught up in it all…”how did you feel when you heard the news etc……”….how do these fools get employed?....it was good to see the response form rescue and aid workers….the power of nature brings everything into perspective….we moan about such trivial things…let’s hope everything that can be done is done. Michael Flatley is about to retire and has created a “painting”… by splashing paint on a canvas and rubbing his hands all over it while river dancing….it sold for 70 odd grand …maybe I’m missing something here but to me it looked a complete mess…talk about the kings new clothes. It reminded me of an art exhibition I went to in Liverpool by Rolph Harris…before his dilemma…and I couldn’t believe the prices they were asking for thumbnail cartoons which couldn’t have taken more than a minute to draw….when he comes out of jail he should be thrown back in again for ripping us all off…..I can’t imagine they would be worth much now. Bear Grylls has got yet another survival programme on the TV….I fail to see the point of all this….apart from Bear proving how hard he is….it’s an accident waiting to happen…and for WHAT?...so you win the competition and prove you could survive in the jungle…skills you are NEVER likely to use…I find it very uncomfortable viewing......and on the subject of fitness Paula Radcliffe has run her last race….what a great example to the world of sport….I don’t know how anyone can run that far…count me out. I enjoyed the clip you sent me with Penny Page and various co-incidences….You mentioned Marvin Rainwater who had the 50’s chart topper “A whole lotta woman”…Monty Lister interviewed him at the time when he was on the Liverpool Empire and asked him if he would come over to Wirral to meet some of the patients in Clatterbridge Hospital….Marvin not only did that he took the whole show over and entertained them all…and I did a gig in Finland back in 2001 and got chatting to this guy who was a local and asked me to listen to some rock and roll on his car radio….so on goes the CD and on comes Monty Lister interviewing Bill Haley in 1956…the guy couldn’t get over the fact that had I not been there in the Arctic Circle I would,at that precise moment,be on the radio with him….how’s that for a co-incidence?....and back in the 60’s I was on holiday in Palma in an apartment…next door was Jack Charlton who I got quite pally with (great guy) and he asked me if I was related to Ray Wood (who worked in leisure services in Wirral council)…because he was the brother of Roy Wood who played for Man City and who was a good friend of Jacks….I told him I wasn’t but I knew Ray very well and his other brother Charlie was the bass player in my first band…all creepy stuff…
