The Fork In Your Ear Ep#196 June The Gamers Month (Grok Summary of Transcription 6-14-25) The transcription captures a podcast episode hosted by Tim and Nate, focusing on technical setup issues, entertainment, video games, and tech updates, with a touch of personal life discussion. Here's a concise summary: Technical Setup Struggles (00:00:00 - 00:07:56): Nate and Tim troubleshoot audio and Discord issues during the podcast setup, dealing with problems like audio hijack previews and Mac output changes. They express frustration with technical glitches but eventually resolve them to start recording. Entertainment Discussion (00:08:10 - 00:30:54): The hosts discuss recent entertainment topics, starting with the tragic murder of Jonathan Ross, the voice actor for John Redcorn in King of the Hill, killed on June 1, 2025, in a hate crime. They express condolences and discuss its impact on the show's revival. They review Murderbot, a new Apple TV+ sci-fi comedy series starring Alexander Skarsgård, based on a book series. The show follows a rogue android who wants to watch soap operas but must save inept space hippies. Both hosts enjoy its humor and premise. Tim mentions watching a Gordon Ramsay show, Secret Service, where Ramsay secretly inspects restaurants, and revisiting The Drew Carey Show during a long traffic jam. Nate notes he's been too busy with work to watch much TV. They touch on the TV industry's shift to shorter seasons and the SAG-AFTRA video game strike resolution on June 11, 2025, allowing voice actors to return to major studios like Activision and EA. Video Game Showcases (00:30:54 - 01:47:15): The hosts discuss recent gaming showcases (Summer Game Fest, PlayStation State of Play, Xbox Games Showcase, and Nintendo Switch 2 launch). None stood out as exceptional, but highlights include: Summer Game Fest: A puppet boxing game with realistic physics and Resident Evil 9, set in a post-apocalyptic Raccoon City with toggleable first- and third-person perspectives. PlayStation State of Play: A James Bond game by IO Interactive, focusing on a young Bond, and a 4v4 Marvel fighting game by Arc System Works. The showcase disappointed by not showing more of Ghost of Yotei. Xbox Games Showcase: Announcements for Outer Worlds 2, Grounded 2 (out July 29, 2025), Indiana Jones DLC, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for Xbox. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Solo Leveling: Overdrive were also noted. Nintendo Switch 2: Tim secured a Switch 2 at Costco unexpectedly and praises its design, despite an LCD screen. Games like Mario Kart World and No Man's Sky were discussed, with Mario Kart World criticized for lacking polish and unclear mechanics like rail grinding. Tech Talk (01:47:15 - 02:29:03): Tim shares his Switch 2 experience, praising its sleek design, improved Joy-Cons, HD Rumble 2, and DLSS upscaling, but notes issues with older Switch games in handheld mode due to CPU limitations. The Switch 2 Pro Controller is lauded for its silent, smooth sticks and customization. Nate discusses the Asus ROG Ally X Xbox Edition, a Windows 11 handheld with an Xbox mode, 24GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. It's compared to the Switch 2 but lacks native Xbox game support, relying on cloud and Play Anywhere titles. They lament confusing microSD Express card standards for the Switch 2 and USB-C cable compatibility issues. Life Updates (02:29:03 - End): Both hosts mention recent birthdays and improving personal circumstances. Nate shares a humorous anecdote about his father gifting him alcohol despite his sobriety, and Tim discusses a USB hub failure affecting his streaming setup. They wrap up with Father's Day wishes and podcast sign-off. The episode blends technical banter, entertainment and gaming news, and personal anecdotes, reflecting the hosts' passion for tech and gaming amidst life's challenges. Today, Danny is joined by the singer-songwriter, producer, screenwriter and journalist Geoff Deane. He was the front man of the new wave band The Leyton Buzzards and the original front man of Modern Romance. Geoff wrote for other artists, including Divine, who he toured with and wrote "You Think You're a Man" for. As a writer, Geoff contributed to The Face and Arena magazines and co-wrote several TV shows including Birds of a Feather, Tonight with Jonathan Ross and the film Kinky Boots. His memoir, “From Mohair Suits to Kinky Boots” is a best seller. Danny and Geoff discuss his upbringing in multi-cultural Hackney, his musical influences, the role art, fashion and film played and how it all influenced the way society evolved. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hackney was working-class, and rents were low, which drew in each wave of new immigrants and made it culturally rich. At the age of 9 Geoff´s mum entered him into a talent contest at the Hackney Empire. Musicians have always broken-down social barriers e.g. David Bowie and homosexuality. Surprisingly, blending rap with salsa resulted in Modern Romance making it big in America. Ay Ay Ay Moosey was written as a thank you to his cousin Moose. Geoff will try anything, including working as a nightclub singer in Spain. You are never too old to explore new creative avenues. Today, it´s easier for musicians to get exposure, but the level of competition makes it harder to have a long career. Unlike music, comedy demands a response. BEST MOMENTS “Stay away from bad women and stay out of the desert.” “Building vertically instead of horizontally eradicated everything that was good … no community.” “There´s a jar full of Amy Winehouse’s fag ends.” “It must have been quite subversive at the time, not liking the Beatles.” “The relationship between skinheads, suedeheads and black people was kind of like an uneasy alliance.” “That buzz has been going on all my life.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/geoffdeane Geoff´s Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mohair-Suits-Kinky-Boots-Clothes-ebook/dp/B0D9W6RP7P Geoff´s son´s music - https://www.tiktok.com/@gotaloudmouth HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. This week we welcome Graham Fellows, the man behind both Jilted John & John Shuttleworth, for a cheeky chinwag about his legendary career in music and television. Yamaha and Casio keyboards feature heavily in this chat, as does John's dog Kirsty. Throughout our conversation, Graham pokes fun while I try not to laugh, as we cover such meteoric subjects as; doorstep drinks deliveries in the 1970s, the possibility of John doing ASMR videos on TikTok, why podcasts should never be over-edited, and how a song lyric earned him an almost lifetime supply of Bounty bars. We chat about his appearances on 'Top of The Pops' as Jilted John, how that character was formed as a reaction to the punk singers of the time, and how after signing a publishing deal, he accidentally created John Shuttleworth on the same day. I explain how I nabbed a job selling Yamaha keyboards in Harrods, even though I couldn't play a note, while Graham divulges why his keyboards sometimes stop working on stage, leading to unplanned comic moments. We also cover his collaboration with Count Arthur, his appearances on the Leslie Grantham-helmed 'Paradise Club' and Jonathan Ross's Saturday Night Zoo, and why, as a kid, he would have loved to have hung out with The Monkees. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn.*Except 'My Wife Died in 1970' written by Graham FellowsPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tvtimespod.bsky.socialX: https://x.com/tvtimespod (reluctantly)Steve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialGraham & John's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/johnshuttlewrthX: https://x.com/johnshuttlewrthFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/johnshuttlewrth/?locale=en_GBYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk1GY2WmzYUSZaowoYdvYdgProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. In this episode, I chat to Jonathan Ross, Vice President at John Ross & Sons, a large metal recycler in Eastern Canada. The company has 14 yards, including a large auto shredding operation, and a very impressive cable granulation plant. Jonathan is a fourth generation metal recycler, and by the sounds of it, there'll be a lot more generations running this company in the future. In today's episode, we talk about:
On 4th December 1994 Jonathan Ross hosted the British Comedy Awards in front of an invited audience of the great and the good and Noel Edmonds. It was a good year for the likes of Steve Coogan, Michael Barrymore and the Drop the Dead Donkey team but almost from the off Ross was beset by problems, including announcing the winner of the wrong award, having to deal with an out-of-control Meatloaf whose sole intention, it seemed, was to reduce Wossy to a quivering mess, and, most notably, attempting to wrest back control of the room in the wake of Spike Milligan calling the future King of England a 'little grovelling bastard'. The reaction and fallout was to dominate the redtops for days and raised Spike's profile so sufficiently that his chatshow bookings and requests for interviews quadrupled overnight. Joining Tyler to talk about all that and examine the winners (and losers) of the evening are co-host of The Sitcom Club podcast Gary Rodger and the man behind Behind The Stunts, Jon Auty. There's clips aplenty and personal reminiscences from Clive Anderson and Jane Milligan. It's a fun stroll down memory lane and a useful reminder that there was a time when Michael Barrymore was the biggest name in showbiz and the likes of Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris were still considered 'the new boys'.
The story of Groq, a semiconductor startup that makes chips for AI inference and was recently valued at $2.8 billion, is a classic “overnight success that was years in the making” tale. On this episode, I talk with founder and CEO Jonathan Ross. He began the work that eventually led to Groq as an engineer at Google, where he was a member of the rapid eval team – “the team that comes up with all the crazy ideas at Google X.” For him, the risk involved in leaving to launch Groq in 2016 was far less than the risk of staying in-house and watching the project die. Groq has had many “near-death” experiences in its eight years of existence, all of which Jonathan believes have ultimately put it in a much stronger position to achieve its mission: preserving human agency in the age of AI. Groq is committed to giving everyone access to relatively low-cost generative AI compute, driving the price down even as they continue to increase speed. We talked about how the company culture supports that mission, what it feels like to now be on the same playing field as companies like Nvidia, and Jonathan's belief that true disruption isn't just doing things other people can't do or don't want to do, but doing things other people don't believe can be done – even when you show them evidence to the contrary. Other topics we touched on include: Why the ability to customize on demand makes generative AI different Managing your own and other people's fear as a founder The problems of corporate innovation The role of luck in business How he thinks about long-term goals and growth — Brought to you by: Mercury – The art of simplified finances. Rerun: When Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross failed to reach their celebrity guest, 78 year-old ‘Fawlty Towers' star Andrew Sachs, they instead left him a series of answerphone messages, joking about sexual encounters with Sachs's granddaughter, Georgina Baillie. The segment aired on Brand's Radio 2 show on 18th October, 2008, and became the third most-complained about programme in recent BBC history. The presenters were suspended, the station controller resigned, and the BBC was fined £150,000. The event, which became known as ‘Sachsgate', kick-started an era of ‘compliance' at Britain's national broadcaster, and was an early example of tabloid-generated ‘cancel culture'. In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca ask whether the presenters would still be in their old jobs, were it not for the Mail On Sunday; discover a parallel between one of Sachs' greatest comic moments and the voicemails that brought him back to national attention; and speculate whether ‘Sachsgate' lead to the boom in comedy podcasts… Further Reading: • ‘Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross Abuse Andrew Sachs via Phone' (BBC, 2008): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7IHJ66wj9g&t=476s • ‘Sachsgate: The obscene prank calls from Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross that 'haunted' Andrew Sachs before his death' (Daily Mirror, 2016): https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/sachsgate-obscene-prank-calls-russell-9376380 • ‘BBC apologises over Brand prank' (BBC, 2008): http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7692911.stm ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' He captured the comedy zeitgeist not just as the co-creator of Father Ted but also with The IT Crowd and Black Books, winning five Baftas and a lifetime achievement award. Then his life took an unexpected turn. When he championed an unfashionable cause, TV commissioners no longer returned his emails, showbiz pals lost his number and his marriage collapsed. In an emotionally charged memoir that is by turns hilarious and harrowing, he lets us into the secrets of the writing room and colourfully describes the high-octane atmosphere of a sitcom set. But he also berates an industry where there was no one to stand by his side when he needed help. Bruised but not beaten, he explains why he chose the hill of women and girls' rights to die on – and why, despite the hardship of cancellation, he's not coming down from it any time soon." https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tough-Crowd-Made-Career-Comedy/dp/1785633066 --------------- SUBSCRIBE: If you are enjoying the show, please subscribe to our channel on YouTube (click the Subscribe Button underneath the video and then Click on the Bell icon next to it to make sure you Receive All Notifications) AUDIO: If you prefer Audio you can subscribe on iTunes or Soundcloud.
