It's 30 years since John Aldridge made headlines for all the wrong reasons during a World Cup match between Ireland and Mexico. The Irish striker lost his temper with a match official, after not being allowed to take to the field as a substitute. Ireland were losing the match 2-0 and needed a goal.Aldridge and his manager, Jack Charlton, were pictured on television broadcasts around the world shouting expletives. Both were punished after the game, but when Aldridge finally was allowed on the pitch, he scored a goal to give Ireland a chance to get back into the game.He shares his memories of that day with Alan Hamilton. This month we'll look at the opening pair of matches in each group at USA 94.  There was a raft of new laws on tackling, offside and the back pass, which FIFA hoped would liven up the show, after the stodginess of Italia 90.  The gaudy opening ceremony, and Diana Ross's penalty miss (which foreshadowed the climax of the tournament), fuelled the scepticism about taking the World Cup to a country that knew nothing of soccer but everything of crass hype and empty razzmatazz.  Yet once the actual football got under way, all the fears fell away.  A memorable first set of games saw dark horses Romania stun the much-hyped Colombians, Jack Charlton's Republic of Ireland enjoy their finest hour, the rise of new forces from Asia, Nigeria's Super Eagles swooping down in style, Diego Maradona returning in typically exuberant fashion, and much more. The cream of Cornwall. There aren't many footballers from Cornwall who have gone on to grace the world stage, but Chris Morris certainly is one of them.Having failed to make the grade at both Argyle and Exeter City, Newquay-born Morris had to make the decision to move to Sheffield to pursue his footballing dream. After impressing the great Jack Charlton, enough, he signed as a teenager at Sheffield Wednesday, helping them to promotion in just his second season.A move to Scotland and Celtic was to follow where he became an instant hero, playing every game as Celtic won the league and cup double in their centenary season.Former boss, Charlton, was so impressed with Morris' performances north of the border that he brought him into the Ireland squad that defied the odds to reach not only the European Championships in 1988, but the quarter finals two years later at the World Cup in Italy in 1990.A stint in the Premier League was cut short and after a return home to the family pasty making business, Chris Morris became a coach developer and finally landed his job at Argyle, where he currently works in the Academy. The is the pretty incredible story of Chris Morris.

Kevin Moran, a famous figure from United's past, joined Helen Evans and David May to discuss his career on our latest UTD Podcast. The Irish centre-back was with May at Blackburn Rovers late in his career but only after starting two FA Cup finals with United in the 1980s, as we lifted the cup by beating Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton. Unfortunately, Kevin was the first man ever to be sent off in the showpiece event, for a foul on Everton's Peter Reid in 1985. Ron Atkinson's 10 men still won, thanks to Norman Whiteside's iconic goal, and, of course, Moran recalls that day and answers the question of whether he ever received his medal.Growing up, he played hurling and Gaelic football in his homeland, which could have derailed his United career before it had started, as he would secretly play in some high-profile games in the Republic of Ireland, without the club's knowledge! He even reveals he turned the Reds down when they first came calling!A late starter, he only got into football at 14, his commitment and bravery would become legendary with United's gamble on him paying off. Atkinson replacing Dave Sexton at the helm made a difference in terms of his fight for a first-team place, but his time at Old Trafford came to an end after Sir Alex Ferguson's arrival, which he discusses in detail as the Scot tried to rid the club of its drinking culture.A move to Sporting Gijon in Spain showed his sense of adventure and he would remain a stalwart for Republic of Ireland, being part of Jack Charlton's famous 1990 World Cup side and even making the squad four years later, as he ended up on 71 caps.Kevin tells us more about his interesting career path after retirement and is still a season ticket-holder at Old Trafford. Euro 88 was only four days old when the second of group games began, but our old friend jeopardy was already running amok. After a nervous start, the hosts West Germany took on an ailing Denmark in Gelsenkirchen. A few hours later, also in Group A, Italy met Spain in what was felt like a de facto quarter-final.Then, on Wednesday afternoon, we rushed home from school (or, in Gary's case, grabbed a seat in front of a 15-inch TV with a load of fashionistas) for the big one: England v the Netherlands, a match that both teams could barely afford to draw, never mind lose.In the evening, Ireland produced arguably the finest performance of the Jack Charlton years against the USSR in a game that included a famous goal and a forgotten first touch to die for.Martyn, Gary and Rob rave about a teenage Paolo Maldini, discuss English football's obsession with individual heroism, question an iconic hat-trick and celebrate a partnership from the future: Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten. Jack Charlton, Roy Keane and Toto Schillaci are just some of the names dropped this week as former Republic of Ireland defender and manager Mick McCarthy joins Kammy and Ben on the pod. He recalls what he says was “the best time of his life” as Ireland captain, from shirt swapping with Franco Baresi to gaining an audience with the Pope, and how he and Ruud Gullit effectively decided the result of a match during that memorable tournament. He also talks about his love for Big Jack and why he deserves more acclaim for his achievements in the late 80s and early 90s. He also talks about his time as manager of the Ireland squad and why he wouldn't change anything about what happened with Keane following their infamous row in Saipan. Elsewhere, how did Ray Houghton, a spoon and an unsuspecting Ireland fan give Mick the biggest laugh of his football career? Did he really have a hit single and why did he have a race with a journalist..and did he win? ADVISORY: Mick refers to his Republic of Ireland team-mate Pat Bonner as ‘Packie', which is a commonly used abbreviation of the name ‘Patrick' in Ireland, and how he was widely known throughout his playing career.

In this episode Rob talks about lessons of the book “The First 100 Days ; Lessons in Leadership from the Football bosses” by Phil Denton and the links to the method of creating your own story of your career. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are three things that should be kept in mind as as a new leader. One is invite your people in to the story. Two is to explain to them why it matters and why it's important. Three is give every member in your team a role in the story. Explain to your team what your vision is, your overall concept. “We” are gong to create this'. Invite, include, explain. Understand the reasons why your team is motivated as individuals and key that in when you explain why the success of your efforts is important. What is it that they can contribute?  BEST MOMENTS ‘Here you are, I want to paint a picture. You are a new leader. It might be a school, it might be a business, it might be a family, it might be a club.' ‘You're in the dressing room, you've been introduced, its your first day. How are you gonna impact them?' ‘I've mentioned this in a previous podcast. One of Jack Charlton's kit men felt he was the most important member of the team because that's how Jack Charlton made him feel.'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Rossa Mullally, Director with Sigmar Recruitment (150 staff across five offices nationwide) joins TeamGBS to instigate 'National Jealousy Day' - celebrated in Finland when, on the 1st of November every year, EVERYBODY'S taxable income is posted for all to see. Team GBS wanted to find out what the neighbours were earning so we recruited (see what we did there) Rossa, who has sixteen years industry experience, to tell us who's earning what...like the software sales reps, who are under 30, and earning €250,000 plus! He then moves the dial up and talks about some who are earning €1/2 million... in Ireland. He says he has never seen the recruitment industry busier, including IT recruitment that has seen more openings in January than in all of 2021... and the IT industry didn't see any big fall during Covid. He cites examples of people who have seen their salaries jump from €90k to €140k by 'not leaving their jobs'.Recruitment is another hot sector, where entrants can pick up a high salary from the get-go. Marketing is NOT the hottest sector salary-wise, but many, many people are choosing to get into marketing. We of course go down some rabbit holes, like how a recruiter could tell venture capitalists if an app could work...His 'hire in a heartbeat', chef, businessman, TV personality, Rick SteinJohn Saunders is MD of the Honda, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep unit of the Gowan Group. He explains why we choose the cars we do, and how we're now focussing on technology. But how do you differentiate cars that are made on the same chassis, but effectively the same company? John explains. He talks about Opel being the biggest car sponsorship for the Ireland rugby team, but he wants Jack Charlton back before they might sponsor the soccer team again. We asked him for a discount on his cars. His answer is great...if typical! We were a little rude about the Jeep, but John came out fighting and explains why it's actually a great car - because of its four wheel drive. He explains the changes in customers buying cars. Salesroom visits have dropped from 5 to just one, where customers have done all of their work online before deciding what they want. They only go to the showroom to kick the tyres. His hire in a heartbeat was going to be Ayrton Senna, but he eventually opted for his boss, Brenda Saunders - his wife!Kevin D'Arcy is co-founder with his fiancée, Alannah, of OrcaBoards. They design paddle boards as well as Blubber robes and Belooga swimwear. But both founders have 'real' jobs as well. Kevin is an auditor, and we had a world-first on That Great Business Show when Kevin gave us a cracking business one-liner. An auditor telling jokes, you heard it here first folks. He explains how they differentiate their robes and boards from others - the secret is a lower margin. They've decided to create different brands in case one has problems, the Cadbury model according to Kevin. They were selected by Arnotts to sell their products in the run up to Christmas, which proved hugely successful. Every day they were selling in Arnotts was a like the best market research they could carry out. he talks about the new range, due out this side of summer. One of their clever products is Christmas togs to match the Christmas jumpers, hugely popular in Ireland.Alannah has also created her own design for women's swimwear, that includes sleeves on the swimsuit to counter the cold of Ireland's seawater. His 'hire in a heartbeat' is Gym Plus Coffee co-founder, Niall Horgan Hosted on Acast.
