Send us a textThe veil lifts on a shocking story of betrayal, abuse, and corruption as respected Staten Island figure Elliott Carterr reveals disturbing truths about once-influential Blood leader Rameen "Ise Kream" Smith. This raw conversation exposes how a man who commanded respect throughout New Brighton's Tombstone Gangsters used fear and intimidation to mask predatory behavior.Mr. Carterr, a Staten Island podcaster with firsthand prison experiences alongside Ise Kream, shares court documents revealing the gang leader's arrest for sexually abusing a child under 13. The allegations are horrific—showing pornography to a minor, inappropriate touching, and more—all while Smith maintained his position of authority within the community. The 39-year-old's criminal activities eventually extended to betraying his own code, taking a proffer agreement to cooperate against fellow gang member "Tone."The conversation reveals an even more disturbing family pattern, with Ise Kream's brother Jatiek "Bad Blood" Smith allegedly approaching inmates with bizarre proposals to cooperate against them in exchange for financial support. According to news reports, both brothers have histories of sexual crimes against minors, using their gang affiliations as shields against accountability. The discussion highlights how power dynamics within gang structures can enable abusers while silencing victims and witnesses through fear of retaliation.Though some in New Brighton still support Ise Kream despite these revelations, most of Staten Island has turned against him now that the truth has emerged. This powerful episode serves as both a warning about false leaders and a testament to breaking the silence that protects predators. As Chyna Brim states, "I don't wish jail on a lot of people, but I wish jail on him."For more insights into Staten Island's street dynamics, follow LFTG Radio on Instagram and listen to their podcast on all streaming platforms. (00:55) Kate Clemons reveals the journey of Brown Bear Bread Company, a story of passion, persistence, and finding your true calling. What began in 2020 as home baking experiments during the pandemic transformed into a church basement operation, then a full café in Mount Oliver, and finally found its perfect home in New Brighton's vibrant small-town setting.(10:03) Their five-year-old sourdough starter (affectionately named Phil) brings distinctive character to their breads – especially their cult-favorite sourdough English muffins that require a full two days of preparation. Kate shares how customers with gluten sensitivities often find they can enjoy Brown Bear's naturally fermented sourdough when commercial breads cause problems.Despite having "Bread" in their name, Brown Bear has evolved into a comprehensive bakery experience. From laminated pastries and custom cakes to savory options and weekend brunch, Kate and her partners Dan and Kaylie have created a menu that balances artisan techniques with approachable favorites. Their philosophy is simple: make food they themselves would want to eat, using straight forward ingredients. (23:21) What makes this story so fascinating is Kate's own evolution from classically trained opera singer to passionate baker and business owner. Her early experience at a patisserie during college planted seeds that would later bloom into Brown Bear Bread Company, demonstrating how life's journey often takes unexpected but meaningful turns.Whether you're a sourdough enthusiast, looking for a destination-worthy baked treat, or simply inspired by small business success stories, Brown Bear Bread Company offers something special. Visit them in New Brighton, catch them at local farmers markets, or follow their mouthwatering Instagram feed to experience handcrafted baking at its finest.(36:38) Ashley Cesaratto continues our trip Beaver county with a recommendation to Biba, and Dagny Como brings us back to the home kitchen with a suggestion for up-leveled beef tallow french fries. Send us a textMartin Parr opens a window into his extraordinary five-decade career documenting the eccentricities of British life and leisure, revealing the philosophy that has made him one of the world's most celebrated documentary photographers.Taking us behind his lens, Parr shares how finding himself "in the right place at the right time" led to his breakthrough project "The Last Resort" in New Brighton during the 1980s – a collection so enduring it's now in its seventh edition. With refreshing candor, he confesses that most of his photographs are "rubbish" and considers himself fortunate to capture ten good images annually, highlighting the relentless pursuit of quality that defines true mastery.Parr's unique ability to create photographs that provoke "ambiguous emotional reactions" – where viewers "are unsure whether to laugh or cry" – reveals the subtle power of his documentary approach. While acknowledging criticism of his work, his substantial following (700,000+ Instagram followers) and exhibitions in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Tate, Pompidou Centre, and Museum of Modern Art, confirm his profound impact on contemporary photography.Beyond his personal achievements, Parr's commitment to preserving photographic heritage shines through his foundation, which houses not only his extensive archive but also collections from other British documentary photographers, alongside approximately 5,000 photography books. This cultural repository, combined with his mentorship of emerging talent, ensures his influence will extend far beyond his own remarkable body of work. What truly emerges from this conversation is Parr's infectious enthusiasm for finding magical moments in mundane settings. "I'm happiest in a cliché," he admits, revealing how church village fetes and seaside holidays become portals to understanding British identity through his discerning eye. His legacy? "The folio of photos I've built up – an archive of my time in Britain over the last 50 years." A cultural treasure capturing our shared history one extraordinary ordinary moment at a time.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch
John MacDonald: One stadium, one ticket price

Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2025 5:04 Transcription Available

Even though I live in Christchurch and pay rates in Christchurch, you're not going to hear me saying that I should pay less to get into the new One NZ Stadium when it opens next year. But I bet there'll be no shortage of Christchurch people thinking that's a brilliant idea, but I don't. It's something that the council-owned company that will run the stadium says could happen. People who live in Christchurch city could pay less than people from anywhere else. The reason being —or the theory being— that those of us who live in the Christchurch city area have put money into the stadium through our rates and maybe that could or should be recognised by charging us Christchurch lot less for tickets. On average, every Christchurch city ratepayer pays $144 a year to go towards the cost of building the stadium. All up —at this stage— the cost to build it is $683 million, and it's expected to be open by April next year. There's already a precedent for locals paying less with the hot pools at New Brighton. Locals get cheapie deals there. And locals in Hurunui pay less to get into the hot pools in Hanmer Springs. But I don't think we should go down that track with the stadium. One reason being that we will all benefit once the thing is up-and-running. The money coming into town will be brilliant, which is enough of a pay-off for me. The forecasts say it'll put $21 million into the local economy every year. That's enough of a return for my investment. I don't want cheaper tickets, as well. What's more, it would be extremely hypocritical of people who are anti-stadium and have been banging-on for years that it's just a nice-to-have and their rates money shouldn't be going into it, to put their hand out for cheaper tickets. The reason the levy for out-of-towners is being talked about is because it's the promoters and the people behind the concerts and the sporting matches who set the ticket prices. So the stadium operator couldn't give Christchurch people a discount because they don't set the prices, but they could put an out-of-towner levy on tickets bought by people outside Christchurch city. Which would, effectively, mean Christchurch locals paying less and people elsewhere paying more. But I don't think that would be fair. Because what about people living right on the doorstep of Christchurch city? How fair would it be to make people in Selwyn and Waimakariri, for example, pay more? It wouldn't be fair at all. Because what we would be doing is punishing them because Christchurch City Council couldn't get its act together on the stadium funding in the first place. It didn't even bother —right at the outset— to try and negotiate a deal where those areas did have some skin in the game, where they did make some sort of financial contribution towards the stadium. It would also be punishing people in Selwyn and Waimakariri for their councils not being proactive. For not picking up the phone and calling Christchurch and saying they wanted to do some of the heavy lifting. Fifty percent of people in Selwyn travel into Christchurch every day for work and school. And I've said all along that people in Selwyn and people in Waimakariri should be contributing to the stadium through their rates. But that horse has bolted. The people who could have made that happen —the councils— didn't. And so I'm not going to turn around now and say that us Christchurch locals should get preferential treatment.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

John MacDonald: Hotpool sell-off idea leaves me cold

If there's one city council facility in Christchurch that never seems to have a bad word said about it, it's the He Puna Taimoana hot pools at New Brighton. I would actually say that the pools are one of Christchurch's great post-earthquake success stories. What's more, they don't run at a loss. How often can you say that about anything run by a local council? Tell that to city councillor Aaron Keown, though. Because he's come up with this idea of selling the hot pools to try and get some cash in the door, so the council can avoid increasing rates by about nine percent next year. I'm telling you now. It would be the wrong thing to do. And I don't think it matters whether you've been there or not to know how daft an idea this is. Because those pools have become one of Christchurch's absolute gems. I haven't actually been there for a dip myself. But I know plenty of people who have - and they all rave about it. In fact, I was talking to someone this morning who went there for the first time just a few weeks ago. He described it as “exceptional”. And if you're hearing this and thinking ‘oh must give it a go'. Today is your lucky day. Because I checked the online booking system earlier and there are spaces available right now. It's your lucky day because, sometimes, the hot pools can be booked out for days - if not weeks - in advance. That's how popular they are. That was one of the many things that this person I was talking to today loved about going there recently. It wasn't crowded. It was very well controlled. That's a booking system for you. So why is Aaron Keown even entertaining the idea of selling off the pools? It's because the council is really struggling to find ways of avoiding that nine percent rates increase next year. It's not the only idea that's being thrown around the council table. But it's the only one that I'm dead against. Councillor Sara Templeton, for example, has suggested they could sell-off the Lichfield Street carpark. They can do what they want with that, as far as I'm concerned. But leave the hot pools out of this conversation. Because not only is it a success story now. It's been a success story since it opened four-and-a-half years ago. It was late May 2020 and the council was predicting that it wouldn't make any money in its first year. It was executing the pools to run at an $886,000 loss. But it went nuts. And, instead of losing money, it made money. In its first year it turned a profit of $109,000. How many council facilities do that? Not just in Christchurch, but anywhere. They'd hoped to get 75,000 people through the gates. But they had about 120,000 visitors instead. And in March this year, the 500,000th visitor went through the door. At the time, the manager of the pools - Merryn Skipper - said the pools had had a massive positive impact on the local community. She said, since the pools opened, Eftpos spending in the New Brighton area has increased on average by 200,000 transactions a month. Which, all up, equate to about 9.4 million extra Eftpos transactions in the area since May 2020. It's a gold mine! So where is councillor Aaron Keown coming from with this idea of his? He reckons Ngāi Tahu Tourism would be right up for buying the pools. He says: “With another operator it might be better for the area. Especially if we throw them a consent to build a nice big hotel across the road.” Where I think that idea falls over, is the fact that 85 percent of the people who go there are locals. Either way, if the council wants to avoid that nine percent rates increase, it needs to come up with other ideas. Flogging-off the hot pools shouldn't be one of them. John MacDonald: Why are we building in dumb places?

Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch

Stop building houses in dumb places. That's the message the Insurance Council is giving the Government. That bit about “dumb places” isn't me paraphrasing, by the way. They're not my words. They're the exact words the Insurance Council is using after the Government confirmed that changes to the Resource Management Act are one of the 43 things in its final quarterly action plan for the rest of the year. And when I heard that, the first dumb place I thought of was New Brighton, in Christchurch. In fact, pretty much anywhere along that eastern coastline, but especially New Brighton and South Brighton. Because I can't understand for the life of me why the city council has allowed building just to keep on keeping on in those areas when it knows that up to $14 billion worth of properties in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula could be at-risk from sea-level rise. We learned about that figure in October last year when the council made a submission to parliament's environment select committee, which is leading an inquiry into climate adaptation. So, the Christchurch council says on one hand there are truckloads of areas that could be inundated because of sea level rise —about $14 billion worth of property— but, on the other hand, says yep, you can build that new house you want to build at Southshore. Or tells developers they can build apartments at New Brighton. And it's just nuts. You'd think we would have learned not to do this years ago after the quakes. Because remember all the head scratching that went on back in 2011 after the big earthquake about why the council had historically allowed building to happen in certain parts of town? Parts of town where things really went pear-shaped after the quakes. But it's coastal suburbs like New Brighton, South New Brighton and Southshore where there's been a lot of talk about inundation because of how the coastal land dropped after the earthquakes. It seems to have been something the Christchurch City Council has preferred to pussy-foot around over. Increasingly so, as time has gone on. I remember speaking to Dr Bronwyn Hayward from the University of Canterbury, who has written some of the reports that have come out from the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, and I asked her if she could understand why we're still putting houses in New Brighton and South Brighton. She said she couldn't understand it at all. Especially, when you consider that the council itself knows that there's $14 billion worth of properties at risk of being inundated. On top of that $14 billion, the council also reckons road and water infrastructure worth about $3.2 billion is at risk of being taken out because of sea level change. But, despite that, the consents department will probably dish out approval for more building in those areas today. I remember meeting a guy who came around to do a TradeMe pick-up a couple of years ago. He'd moved down from the North Island with his family, and they were building a new house in New Brighton. He was really excited about it and I just didn't know what to say to him. So I said nothing. But what I wanted to say was: “Why the hell are you doing that? Don't you know it's going to be underwater at some point?” And we know it is, because the city council has told us. The same city council telling people it's ok to build there. Hour 3 with Andrew Fillipponi and Chris Mueller: We don't understand Bitcoin. How do you mine Bitcoin? Chris in New Brighton called in to explain. There will only be 21 million Bitcoin in existence. He's made a million in Bitcoin! The Steelers quarterback issues pull us in as many directions as Bitcoin. We have conflicting answers. Diana Russini thinks the Steelers are not pursuing other quarterbacks while other reports are floating that someone like Justin Fields or someone else would be on the team. Adam Schefter said the Steelers are looking for quarterbacks but still has hopes for Kenny Pickett. Actual insiders are saying the Steelers are in play for multiple quarterbacks. If Adam Schefter says it, you think it's real. Other insiders though think the door is closed too. Mullsy thinks maybe he said that because Schefter was on with Pat McAfee, from Pittsburgh. We review the horrendous trade between the Seahawks and Broncos. It might be the worst trade in NFL history. Christian Wilkins is not getting the franchise tag from Miami. Is he an option for the Steelers defensive line? He had a breakout season but wasn't great before.

The real estate agent was last seen in Wigram last Wednesday, and police are now treating the disappearance as a homicide investigation. Efforts are focused on the Halswell River, Greenpark, Lake Terrace Road and near New Brighton and Palmers Road intersection. NZ Herald senior crime reporter Sam Sherwood says the duration of the investigation and new discoveries coming to light have caused police to launch a homicide investigation. "As the week has progressed, and in particular, the last couple of days, more information has come to light- which is now why they've launched a homicide investigation."  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jack Tame: Christchurch has crossed the threshold of becoming a better city than it was before

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

I first realised it this week, running through the city and around Hagley Park on one of those beautiful, still, cold South Island evenings.   For me, it was a long time coming. Twelve years and three months, all up.  Maybe others felt it earlier. Maybe others haven't reached the point yet. I know those who've lived in Christchurch right throughout, who never left the city, might have a completely different perspective, and that's ok.   But as a Cantab at heart, for the first time I feel I can say it with absolute confidence. It's emphatic. Christchurch has crossed the threshold. For the first time since 2010 I reckon the city today is better than it was before the quakes.  There's no one thing. There's one project or development that's pushed it past that point. It's a collection of little things that make Ōtautahi so good.  For starters, the city. Finally the Cathedral isn't just lying in ruin. The remote-controlled digger cleaning up the masonry and bird crap finished its job in record time. The build's progressing, and fast.  Te Pae, Christchurch's glorious new convention centre, is a stupendous venue. Across the road, Tūranga, the new library is surely the best of any big city in New Zealand. The art gallery is amazing. The Margaret Mahy playground is the stuff dreams are madeof for kids and adults alike.  The food in Christchurch is so good. Christchurch's old strip was seedy as, but Riverside Market, The Terrace, and New Regent Street have energy and life.   The central city's new shape works with Ōtakaro, the Avon River. The water's clear and clean and meanders from the gleaming new buildings down near the splendid historic Arts Centre, and into the World-class Botanic Gardens.  I bristle with envy when I think of all the things on Christchurch's doorstep. Taylors Mistake, New Brighton, and Sumner have surf. Mt Hutt has snow. Lyttelton has perhaps the most interesting music and arts community in New Zealand. Hagley Oval has a gorgeous cricket ground and the Christchurch Adventure Park is the gateway to World-class mountain biking.   There are young people in the city and they want to be there. At a time when many New Zealand universities are being forced to cut jobs, Canterbury University is hiring. This year, they tell me the university is on track for a record number of students. Domestic enrolments are up. International enrolments are up. There are students from 100 countries studying at Canterbury, from Mozambique to Myanmar to Mongolia. The number of people enrolled is up 7% at the end of March compared to the same time last year. It's the University's 150th birthday this year, and the halls of residence are at absolute capacity.   The cost of housing in Christchurch is so much cheaper than Auckland, and the quality is so much less depressing than in Wellington. It's younger than Tauranga, more coastal than Hamilton and warmer than Dunedin.   I know it's not perfect. I know how much pain and stress it's taken to get things to this point. I'm under no illusions that places out East – Bromley, in particular – have a hell of a long way to go. The sprawl North and West means the traffic can be a total pain.  But with good leadership and planning, the city should only get better. Maybe it's too big. Maybe it's too expensive. But just imagine the atmosphere in town for that first All Blacks test in Te Kaha.   Years ago when I was living in New York, I asked the city's chief urban designer about lessons from Manhattan's recovery after the 9/11 attacks. He had a tear in his eye when he spoke to me about the transformation he'd experienced.   “Instead of asking yourself what happens if you get it wrong, ask yourself the opposite,” he said.   “What happens if Christchurch is too good? What happens if you remake your city and it's so good that everyone wants to live there?”  I don't reckon we're far off. Christchurch has energy. Christchurch has mojo. Christchurch is better than ever.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

John Wilson talks to photographer Martin Parr about the formative influences and experiences that inspired his own creativity. Globally renowned for his witty and satirical scenes of British life, Parr made his name in the 1970s with a series of monochrome photographs documenting the community of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. His fame grew with his 1985 project The Last Resort, which captured the spirit of the great British holiday in images of ice-cream, chips, and sunburnt bodies on the litter-strewn concrete promenade of New Brighton, Liverpool. Since then, his instantly recognisable work has examined subjects including global consumerism, mass tourism and class. He has published over a hundred books of his work, exhibited all round the world, and is regarded as one of Britain's greatest photographers. Parr is celebrated as Master Of Photography at the 2023 Photo London fair, and has recently opened his own Foundation to exhibit the work of emerging photographers alongside his own. Martin Parr reveals how, growing up in suburban Surrey, he was introduced to photography by his Yorkshire grandfather during holiday visits. He remembers seeing exhibitions by Bill Brandt and Henri Cartier-Bresson in the late 1960s, but it was the work of British street photographer Tony Ray-Jones, whose images he first saw whilst studying photography at Manchester Polytechnic, that was most influential. Martin Parr further developed his distinctive documentary style, and his use of saturated colour processing techniques, after seeing work by American photographer William Egglestone. Martin Parr also chooses the 1991 film Night On Earth by Jim Jarmusch as a key influence on his quirky approach to storytelling, and reflects on how his style and subjects have developed over the years. Are people treated differently based on whether they have legal representation or not?  Have you ever experienced workplace discrimination?  Would you speak up?  Have you ever been terminated and felt maybe you could have won a legal battle? Today's guest Timi Ogundipe owns up to his mistakes and loves it when people underestimate him!  He's a three-time suicide survivor, overcome jail, and just launched a new business! Better Call Daddy: The Safe Space For Controversy.   Timi's bio My name is Timi Ogundipe. I am the founder and CEO of Safe Resell. I was born in Nigeria and moved to the states (Minnesota) when I was 3 years old. I haven't been back since then but have the desire to go back, however, it is costly and time is limited for me.   I am married with 2 kids and live in Minneapolis MN. I have a 9-year-old son, who turns 10 in September from a previous relationship, and my wife and I have a 2-year-old daughter that thinks she is 14.   I grew up in a northern suburb of Minneapolis called New Brighton, and lived there from 1st grade all the way until I graduated HS.   I have an older brother who is the Co-Founder of Civic Eagle and recently raised a Series A round of $3,000,000. I also have a younger sister. My parents own a very successful home healthcare business in Minnesota as well, (my sister works for them).   Growing up, I sucked at school (barely graduated honestly), was a rebel, fought damn near every day, drank on most non-game days, and dabbled into some drugs (marijuana and ecstasy). In HS, I was in track and football for 4 years, basketball for 3, and wrestling for 1. My personality was (and still is) unique. I didn't take any shit from anyone, (literally, if someone stepped on my shoes accidentally and didn't apologize, they got a fist to their jaw), but would also whoop anyone who was bullying someone. I hated bullies and was known for bullying the bullies. My brother was always the golden child, and I hated being compared to him, seriously, hated it. I don't think using cuss words is a bad thing. Why the fuck does a word, that have real meaning (or slang) be considered bad? I say, fuck that shit, cuss all you want, just as long as it isn't at me, and you understand potential consequences.   The summer before I started HS, I attended a party, and that night, was the first time I drank alcohol, smoked weed, and had sex… I was 13 (my birthday is in August). I also have over 80 partners in my life. I stopped counting when I hit 81. My ex-wife was #69. I know because I started a competition with a friend in college…. We both loved fighting, had a unique upbringing and both our names starts with T and we were known as TNT because, we decided that if one of us wasn't bringing a girl back with us, we were fighting. It got to the point where people would leave if we were at a party. People even called us for fi9ghting assistance or when they got jumped. One time, my friend got kicked out of a house party for flirting with the renter's girlfriend, and him and I waited outside in the car until party was over, walked in, and beat up the 5-6 people that were there. Just us 2.     Too much detail to get into about my life, but my life also includes, 1. Bringing a gun to school every day and no one knew except one person. 2. Plenty of fights during and after school 3. Plenty of times I cussed out teachers 4. Drinking during school 5. Being shot at/ having guns pointed at me a few times 6. Having mental health issues, unbeknownst to me at that time 7. Going to college for football and getting kicked out 8. Giving up football and college to pursue MMA because, I loved fighting, and can now do it every day in practice and scheduled fights, without getting in legal trouble. 9. Losing vision in my right eye from injury. 10. Moving to California, 8 days after thinking about the option with no place to live, no money, no friends, nothing. I slept on the beach/in my car, for the first 2 weeks I was there. 11. Moving to Houston with my ex-wife (the marriage lasted 9 months before splitting and 11 months before our divorce was finalized. 12. Getting robbed while trying to sell a phone, thus the idea of Safe Resell came about. 13. Bootstrapping SR while working full-time. 14. Completely tearing my ACL and cartilage in my knee, so now I'll need a knee replacement 15. 3 suicide attempts (pills, gun to head, and car).  The pills were just aspirin and gave me a badass stomachache and puke everywhere after I passed out for about 30 mins or so. The gun to my head, the safety was on and I didn't the courage to try again. And the last attempt, I was in the car with the garage door closed and the car running, then I heard myself tell me to “get out, your son needs you”.  The last attempt was in 2014 I believe, or 2015. Haven't had those thoughts since, but I still have a daily battle with my mental health complexities. 16. Because of the judgment of “Christians” and churchgoers, I do not like going to church or being labeled a Christian. Most Christians are against people being themselves, and I hated having to wear “church clothes” and pay money (offering/tithes). Also, when I got in trouble, I got kicked out my church that I was going to, by the pastor and first lady. I call myself a believer of Christ but will never call myself a Christian until out love-children (children born out of wedlock) and the LGBTQIA+ community are widely accepted. Also, the whole no sex before marriage narrative is bullshit. I won't allow my kids to get married without having sex (unless that's what they really want to do). Because bad sex, forever, will suck.   Since finding out about my mental health complexities, which explained the behavior growing up, and of course, being more mature, everyone that knew me in HS and college, has noticed and informed me on how different I am, which I agree on, unless someone threatens or harms my friend and/or family. Now all I want to do is get rich, give my family everything, travel, and help people out.       About Safe Resell   Safe Resell is a user-to-user marketplace with a focus on safety and integrity. We are the safest user-to-user platform where neighbors can buy and sell new and/or used products. We use a prepayment system where a buyer will pay for an item prior to meeting up with the seller. When buyer prepays, there will be aauthorization hold on their account, similar to how hotels do it upon check in. Upon meeting up, if all looks good, the buyer can complete the purchase, and at that time, we will pull the money from the buyer's account. If the buyer and/or seller, changes their mind, the buyer can notify us to cancel the sale, and the hold will be removed from account within 2 business days.   I launched Safe Resell in July of 2019, with the hopes of having the safest platform, so the experience that I went through, of being robbed, won't happen to other people (or occur very minimally). And of course, I want to be a millionaire because I didn't have much growing up, looking back at it, but at the time, it didn't seem that way. I was on free breakfast and lunch until like 10th grade or so, then was on free breakfast/ reduced lunch.   The platform is currently down as we are doing a whole revamping of the website and we are relaunching end of summer (info not publicly known yet). If possible, I would like the episode to drop shortly after our relaunch. The platform will be available nationwide. She is committed to helping facilitate transformation by encouraging a life-orienting relationship with Jesus Christ.  Her most recent call was as the Worship and Community Life Pastor at Salem Covenant Church in New Brighton, MN.  Jonna has also served as a spiritual director and Adult Discipleship Pastor in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota for over 20 years.    Take a few minutes to meditate on Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and then listen in to hear where God led Jonna.   Some highlights from our conversation: Jonna highlights the transition the Israelites were undergoing when Moses spoke these words. They were moving from a season of orientation to disorientation. We also discussed the seasons of disorientation Jonna has experienced and how the Lord used this passage to remind her of truth she needs to cling to in this season. Jonna gives insight into what “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” would have meant for the Israelites. It's a little different than what it would mean for us. We talk about the two words the Lord drew Jonna to: hear and love. And how he was inviting her to hear and love differently in this season of her life. Jonna also brought new insight into the exhortation that the nation of Israel write things down. Spoiler: It cost a lot more for them to write things down than us. Finally, we talk about spiritual direction. We discuss what it is, why a spiritual director is helpful and how to find one.   You can connect with Jonna directly via email at jonnafantz@hotmail.com   If you are looking for a spiritual director, you can visit the Evangelical Covenant Church website here. You can also find a directory on the Grafted Life website here. (I personally know a few of the directors listed on this site. Both places are good and trusted places to go.)   The exact verses read in this podcast are: Deuteronomy 6:4-9, NIV 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. y 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
