The negative effects that smartphones and social media access can have on students has become a national conversation in recent months, with differing views on who should take the lead in protecting children. Anita Rani was joined by secondary head teacher Emma Mills, whose school in Warrington has banned smartphones. Birchwood High attracted national attention two years ago when teenage student Brianna Ghey was murdered.Paula Radcliffe held the marathon world record for more than 16 years. The four time British Olympian secured the Six Star Medal last week, and has now run all six original marathons: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. Recently she's had her resilience tested in a whole new way - supporting her teenage daughter Isla through a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer. Now in recovery, Isla ran the London marathon last Sunday and Paula joined Nuala McGovern to discuss the experience. With the Met Gala fast approaching, we take a closer look at the business behind the red carpet with International Style Correspondent for the New York Times, Elizabeth Paton, and Fashion Editor for Glamour Magazine, Rosie Lai.For the last decade, Frances Ryan has been a columnist and reporter at The Guardian. She joined Nuala McGovern to discuss her new book - Who Wants Normal? The Disabled Girls' Guide to Life. Part memoir, part manifesto, it explores six facets of life: education, careers, body image, health, relationships and representation, as well as how to survive life's bumps in the road. And London Grammar frontwoman Hannah Reid joined Nuala to discuss more than a decade at the helm of the band, their fourth album The Greatest Love, and what it's been like navigating the music industry as a new parent.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Sarah Jane Griffiths
Olympic athlete and TV commentator Paula Radcliffe lives in Monaco with her husband Gary, and her two children Isla and Raphael.Paula is a 3 time winner of the London Marathon and held the Women's World Marathon Record for 16 years (2003-2019). I spoke to her just after she competed in the Tokyo Marathon aged 51, her first marathon since retiring aged 40.Paula recently co-hosted a lighthearted training podcast Paula's Marathon Run Club for the 16 weeks leading up to the London Marathon. She had a parental interest in this year's race as her own daughter Isla ran in aid of Children with Cancer UK. Paula talked to me about how her daughter went through a cancer diagnosis at the age of 13 and a half. She has happily since been given the all clear. Paula also described her family life in Monaco and I admit I looked up the weather forecast there and felt pretty envious!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. In this special Boston Marathon episode, we sit down right after the race with Dennis Lavoie—a remarkable runner from Maine living with Usher Syndrome Type 2, which causes both profound hearing loss and legal blindness. Just six years after taking up running, Dennis has completed all six World Marathon Majors, earning the prestigious Six Star Medal. He may be the first person in his para category (both blind and deaf) to achieve this milestone. This year, Dennis's regular guide was sidelined last minute, and our chance partnership was formed. We share stories from a history-filled weekend, including a pre-race dinner with my mentor Mark Bauman (Boston Marathon streak world record holder and this year's official starter), and lining up with the competitive para athletes division right behind the elite women. We even had the chance to encourage running legends like Des Linden, Sarah Hall, and Paula Radcliffe.Boston's course is legendary, and the crowds carried us from Hopkinton through Wellesley's “scream tunnel” and up the infamous Newton hills. Despite a hip flexor injury, Dennis finished strong—qualifying again for next year.We also discuss the tough Boston qualification process, the rarity of the Six Star Medal, and the power of community and tradition on marathon day.Learn more about Dennis's story: [Bangor Daily News article]1Support and learn about para athletes: Team With a VisionSee photos and read more: Running Anthropologist Blog: www.Runninganthropologist.com

With Andy working in the USA we have a man on the ground to report on the Rugby League extravaganza from Las Vegas, with sell out stadia and 10,000 fans attending the opening party on Freemont Street. It was FA Cup 5th round weekend, and whilstManchester United and Newcastle both crashed out, we move one step forwards with our “Road to Wembley” teams.England's pitiful dismissal from Cricket's Champions Trophywas all too predictable, also bringing the end of Jos Buttler's time as captain after he resigned following defeat to Afghanistan.Whilst some golfers may be lucky enough to hit a hole in oneduring their lives, in the South African Open Dale Whitnell managed to hit TWO in the same round, a feat that is reported to have odds of 64 million to one against happening. In the Tokyo Marathon, British great Paula Radcliffe had afantastic finish to her first marathon in 10 years as she ran a time of 2 hrs 57 mins. And whilst Radcliffe has won many major titles, men's winner Tadese Takele celebrated his first ever major marathon win as the Ethiopian finished in 2 hrs 3 min 51 secs. Finally in our “Get a Grip” section we look at cycling andhow race organisers and the governing body are risking riders' lives with some of the finishes, as well as the unreasonable attitude to cyclists from other road users in the UK.

Today on the Run Culture podcast I was extremely fortunate to chat to Andy Jones. As a sport scientist he has worked with many elite athletes over the years. Including, the former womans Marathon World Record Holder; Paula Radcliffe, along with also being employed by Nike to help Eluid Kipchoge in the Breaking 2 Marathon Project. I thoroughly enjoyed this chat, Andy is a fountain of knowledge, he has devoted his whole professional life to attempting to improve our understanding of the physiology of endurance performance. We start the podcast, going over his own running career and what he learnt from his own childhood hero; Steve Jones. We then define and discuss the ins/outs of 'Running Economy' and 'Physiological Resiliency' at length, using Andy's experiences with Paula and the Nike Breaking 2 Project. Links to two of Andy's articles I refer to in this chat are below: -The 15 yr long longitudinal study on Paula Radcliff, 'The Physiology of the World Record Holder for the Woman's Marathon (2006).' As Liverpool finally broke their Real Madrid jinx in the Champions League we speak about the big news from their star, Mo Salah, who said he hasn't had a formal offer to stay past the summer (05:40).What price should Liverpool pay to keep him? How much can any sports team, franchise or organisation rely on just one player? And is Mo (and his abs!) redefining what it means to be a 32-year-old in the transfer market? We speak to Paul Machin, founder of the Liverpool fan channel, The Redmen TV (10:30). And we've chatted on the show before about the biggest stars possibly getting a leg up by having the best lawyers, well we chat to the lawyer to the stars, Nick Freeman, aka 'Mr Loophole'. He helps A-listers like Alex Ferguson and David Beckham get off driving and other charges (26:21). Plus, Mark reacts to his favourite golfer Bryson DeChambeau hitting a hole in one... over a house! (39:10)And Gabby tells us about the time she ran on a treadmill next to Paula Radcliffe. Paula Radcliffe MBE joins Gabby this week! The three-time winner of the London Marathon talks about turning 50, The Olympics and why strength training is so important. In 2002, Paula received numerous accolades including an OBE, BBC Sports Personality of the Year and IAAF Athlete of the Year. Across her incredible career, Paula competed at four consecutive Olympic Games from 1996-2008, and won a gold medal in the marathon at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. She still likes to run, but has found that she isn't competitive anymore (well, not very), which she finds quite refreshing. In 2020, her daughter was diagnosed with a rare germ cell tumour, so she and her family have been through a lot over the last few years. She talks to Gabby about the stress that this has put on her daughter and how much her family and friends have rallied. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Hosted on Acast.
