Brandon Mouw shares his amazing journey to getting a pancreas-only transplant after an unexplained bout of kidney stones turned him into a brittle diabetic. While Brandon is technically no longer a T1D, he has over 30 years' experience with T1D and honestly would rather have well controlled T1D than deal with the anti-rejection treatments. But as he shares in both this episode AND his upcoming book, that was not an option. His brittle diabetes almost killed him.Read the show notes and find all the links discussed in the episodeGo straight to our podcast page to find all the episode show notes & relevant T1D links and resourcesReady to take the next step? This week's episode of the podcast is the most incredible story so far.Eoin speaks with fellow Type 1 Diabetic, Brandon Mouw. Brandon was diagnosed with Diabetes at the age of 3 and has been living with the condition for 31 years. He has always taken good care of his Diabetes management and is proudly ‘a very healthy Diabetic'.In 2015, following a sudden, intense pain, Brandon underwent 9 surgeries and had one of his kidneys removed. One problem seemed to lead to another (to say the least) and his last hope of survival was to get a full Pancreas transplant. He wasn't just facing health difficulties, he was also facing substantial financial difficulties as a result. Brandon had to somehow raise $250,000 in 3 months, just to pay for his life saving surgery. We'll let you hear it from him.Be sure to rate, comment, subscribe and share. In the Seventh episode of 'Transplant Chats With Eliza', we will hear from Brandon Mouw.Imagine needing a transplant but living in a country with no NHS and where your Health Insurance won't pay out.It seem impossible but Brandon from California made it happen.
In this episode I speak to Brandon Mouw. Brandon was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 3 and after living with type 1 diabetes for over 30 years became a brittle diabetic. Brittle diabetes is a rare form of insulin-dependent diabetes and is marked by frequent and severe episodes of hypoglycemia and/or hyperglycemia (DKA). This instability of blood sugar levels often leads to hospitalization and necessitates frequent self-monitoring of blood glucose, the use of an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitoring device (CGM). In rare cases, a pancreas transplant may be necessary. (Taken from BeyondType1.org). Brandon was told that if he did not have a pancreas only transplant he has less than two years to live. Brandon is based in the USA and this specific transplant operation isn't covered by insurance so he needed to raise $250,000 in three months for this life-saving operation. At this point he had already undergone multiple surgeries for relating to kidney stones and only has one kidney. Brandon and I talk about: his life with type 1 and brittle diabetes including managing workhis transplantation journeyhow his life is has changed after receiving his pancreas transplant how he managed to raise the $250,000 which involved the kindness of strangers how he's using his experience to help othersTransplantation is a journey that few go on and this was the first time I've sat down and had a conversation with a fellow transplant recipient. Brandon's journey shows that nothing is impossible.
