In the 20th century, antibiotics transformed medicine. Infections that once killed millions could be cured with a pill or injection. Surgeries became safer, cancer treatments more effective, and advanced medical interventions, such as organ transplants, became possible, all because doctors could rely on these drugs to control infections. Unfortunately, today, that foundation is crumbling. Bacteria are evolving faster than medicine can keep up. Common antibiotics are failing, and infections that were once easily treatable are becoming deadly again. In 2019 alone, antimicrobial resistance was linked to nearly five million deaths worldwide, making it deadlier than HIV or malaria. The economic cost is equally staggering: the World Bank warns of trillions lost in global productivity and millions pushed into poverty if nothing changes. This crisis, caused by antimicrobial resistance, has been described as a “silent pandemic.” Unlike a sudden outbreak, it spreads quietly, making routine medical care slightly more dangerous each year. Yet amid this grim outlook, new research is opening a window of hope. At the forefront of new innovations in this area are Dr. Kai Hilpert of City St George's, University of London, and his colleagues, who are pioneering an approach that combines biology, chemistry, and artificial intelligence to reinvent how we discover infection-fighting medicines. Their work has been recognised with a prestigious award from the UK's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, BBSRC.

Belief the health sector should set targets for all elective surgeries to ensure wait times are reduced fairly. The Government's exceeded its half-year target, by delivering more than 16-thousand extra operations before the end of June. The overall waitlist has also dropped by nine percent. General surgeon Chris Wakeman told Mike Hosking targets are a good manoeuvre - but they do have their downfalls. He's worried staff won't be able to deal with smaller and high turnover cases if they don't see them in public institutions. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ever wondered what it's like to peek into strangers' homes just for the thrill of it? That's how we kicked off our weekend, sharing some hilarious stories about attending open houses with no intention of buying, just a curious fascination with interior designs and the quirks of personal spaces. We also took a humorous detour into the wild world of dating across cultures, where the mix of different backgrounds leads to some truly memorable and candid relationship tales. And of course, we couldn't resist chatting about the complexities of buying and selling homes and the rollercoaster of emotions that come with it. Next up, we hit the road—literally—with plans for an epic journey through New Mexico and Colorado. Amidst the excitement of a new baby's arrival, we navigated the logistics of respecting privacy and recovery time for new parents. The route quickly turned into a lively debate on superhero flicks, from the latest Fantastic Four to the classics like Iron Man. All this led to a side-splitting discussion about which Fantastic Four characters we'd embody and why it's essential to balance relaxation with adventure during vacations. Finally, we wrapped things up with a deep dive into the ethics of influencer culture and the music industry's ever-changing landscape. Our conversation touched on Taylor Swift's bold moves to reclaim her music masters and speculated on the future of music streaming platforms. We also addressed the importance of online safety for kids and the cultural connections some car brands have, especially within the African-American community. From discussing the appeal of certain cars to exploring parenting in the digital age, our show was packed with thoughtful insights and plenty of laughs along the way.

In a written reply to a Parliament query, health ministry cited heavy patient load as the reason, adding that critical & emergency surgeries are being prioritised & conducted without delay.
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Hacham Ovadia Yosef ruled that if a person needs to undergo surgery during the Nine Days (from Rosh Hodesh Ab through Tisha B'Ab), and the procedure could be delayed until after Tisha B'Ab without endangering his health, then he should postpone the operation so as not to have it done during the Nine Days, which is an inauspicious time. Although it is customary not to make weddings during the three-week period from Shiba Asar Be'Tammuz through Tisha B'Ab, it is permissible to get engaged during this period, and even during the Nine Days – and even on Tisha B'Ab itself. One may also host an event to celebrate the engagement, though without a festive meal. If a couple is getting married after Tisha B'Ab, wedding-related purchases may not be made during the Nine Days. These include clothes and other items for the wedding, as well as furniture and utensils for the couple's home. If, however, there will not be enough time after Tisha B'Ab to make the necessary purchases, or if the products might not be available after Tisha B'Ab, and the groom has yet to fulfill the Misva of Periya Ve'ribya (procreation) – and thus the wedding should not be delayed – then the purchases may be made during the Nine Days. One should not have his house painted or redecorated during the Nine Days. Work that is necessary for basic living – such as repairing plumbing, doors or windows – is allowed, but work that merely enhances the home, such as painting, wallpaper and carpeting, should not be done during this period. It goes without saying that building luxury items such as a tennis court or swimming pool may not take place during the Nine Days. In a synagogue, however, even work to enhance the building is permitted during the Nine Days, as it is a Misva to glorify the house of prayer. If a Jewish painter has no other source of income, and if he does not work during the Nine Days he will have no money for his basic necessities, then according to some Poskim – including Hacham Ovadia Yosef – he may be allowed to work during this period. If a Jewish painter was unable to complete before Rosh Hodesh Ab a job for which he was hired, and he if does not complete it during the Nine Days he would suffer a financial loss – as he has other jobs lined up for after Tisha B'Ab – there may be room to allow him to finish the painting work during the Nine Days. In such a case, a competent Posek should be consulted for guidance. If one hired a non-Jewish painter, and he wishes to continue working during the Nine Days so he can complete the job, the Jewish customer should try to convince him to agree to postpone the work until after Tisha B'Ab, even if this entails paying some compensation. If the painter cannot be convinced, then he may be allowed to complete the work during the Nine Days. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) brings from an earlier source that one should not purchase wood during the Nine Days, in commemoration of the loss of the "Aseh Ha'ma'aracha" – the firewood on the altar in the Bet Ha'mikdash. Since we mourn in this period the destruction of the Bet Ha'mikdash, and the loss of the ability to offer sacrifices on the altar, it is appropriate to refrain from purchasing wood. Hacham Ovadia Yosef writes that according to this explanation of the custom, it applies only to the purchase of firewood, since it commemorates the loss of the firewood on the altar. However, Hacham Abdullah Somech (Baghdad, 1813-1889), in his Zibheh Sedek, writes that one should refrain from purchasing firewood during this period because we lost on Tisha B'Ab the building of the Bet Ha'mikdash, which was made from wood. According to this reason, purchasing wood even for building purposes should be forbidden. Hacham Ovadia Yosef concludes that since the Ben Ish Hai did not mention the reason given by Hacham Abdullah, it seems that it was not accepted. Therefore, although one may not purchase firewood during the Nine Days (such as if he wishes already then to prepare for the winter), he may purchase wood for construction purposes, or to build furniture, if he is planning to build after Tisha B'Ab. Hacham Ovadia Yosef ruled that in Israel, contractors who build homes with the intent of selling them for a profit may continue their work during the Nine Days, due to the housing shortage in Israel. Generally, one should not build during the Nine Days for the purpose of earning a profit, but Hacham Ovadia felt that given the urgent need for more homes in Eretz Yisrael, construction on residential buildings should not be suspended during the Nine Days. Rav Yisrael Bitan clarified that although Hacham Ovadia wrote this in the early years of the State of Israel, when the country saw a very large influx of immigrants, creating a dire housing shortage, this is true even today, when, thank G-d, many new couples are marrying and need homes. On Tisha B'Ab itself, however, the work should be discontinued. One whose new home becomes ready during the Nine Days may move in, assuming that this is his primary residence into which he is moving to more comfortably accommodate his family, and he is not moving for luxury purposes. He may even host a Hanukat Ha'bayit celebration during the Nine Days after moving in– and he in fact should do so rather than delay the celebration. Although it is customary to conduct the Hanukat Ha'bayit within a year of moving into a new home, it is nevertheless preferable to have the event as soon as possible, and so one who moves into a new home during the Nine Days should host the Hanukat Ha'bayit immediately. Light refreshments may be served at the event, but music may not be played. Normally, when hosting a Hanukat Ha'bayit, the homeowner wears a new garment and recites the Beracha of "She'hehiyanu." When the event is held during the Nine Days, one should wear the new garment and recite "She'hehiyanu" after Tisha B'Ab, as it is customary not to recite this Beracha during the Three Weeks. One should not purchase fine jewelry during the Nine Days. Nevertheless, a jeweler may continue operating his business during the Nine Days. Since people purchase jewelry more frequently nowadays than in the past, such purchases do not bring special joy as they used to, and so there is room to be lenient for somebody who earns a livelihood from selling jewelry. One may purchase a new car during the Nine Days if he needs it for his livelihood. If, however, he wishes to buy a new car as a luxury, not as a necessity, then he should wait until after Tisha B'Ab, unless the car will cost more money if he delays. It would seem that there is no distinction between buying and leasing in this regard. One may purchase new Torah books during the Nine Days, and if he needs more space for the new books, he may buy new bookshelves. In general, one may purchase furniture that is needed for basic living, but not furniture that is needed for luxury purposes. One may buy simple clothing, such as socks, but one may not buy more significant garments, such as a suit. However, this is permissible if the price will be significantly higher after Tisha B'Av. One may buy material during the Nine Days to be used for making clothing after Tisha B'Ab.
Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain (and maybe the hospital gown) on something I rarely go into detail about... my long, complicated, sometimes comical history with fourteen surgeries. Yep, 14. From having a tumor removed at age three, to getting breast implants (and later explanting them), to a full-on spinal disc replacement… it's been a journey! Spoiler alert: almost all roads lead back to my back. Whether it was compensating during workouts, posture shifts from surgery scar tissue, or the ripple effects of certain cosmetic procedures, neurological issues and more… my spine has carried the load... literally and metaphorically... for decades. I open up about: Why I got each surgery (the real reasons, not just the Instagram explanation) What I regret, what I don't, and what I really want women in midlife to know before going under the knife How I finally ended up needing my L5-S1 disc replaced (ouch… and also, wow) The things that are ACTUALLY helping me recover like red light, peptides, compression, hydration, and walking (even when it feels like dragging a noodle-leg down the street) If you're navigating surgery, chronic pain, or even just frustrated that your body feels like it's falling apart faster than your favorite jeans... this episode is for you. Want the full list of what I'm using in recovery? Grab my free Surgery Recovery & Healing Guide [insert link here] And come hang with me on Instagram @nataliejillfit where I'm sharing the good, the bad, and the bloated (yep, that too). It's Thursday, July 24th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark United Kingdom urging 10 countries to give religious freedom The United Kingdom is urging 10 countries in the world to protect religious freedom. British Member of Parliament David Smith announced the plan earlier this month as the U.K.'s new Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief. Smith highlighted the persecution of Christians around the world in his briefing. His plan will promote religious freedom in countries where the need is greatest, including Afghanistan, Algeria, China, India, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Listen to comments Smith made on his X account. SMITH: “So today, I was at the Foreign Office launching the freedom of religion or belief strategy -- a strategy that as U.K. Special Envoy, I've been working on for the last six months. “That strategy is going to help us work with civil society organizations, with the U.K. posts all around the world, to focus in on the places that we can make the most difference to make sure that people can have freedom of religion or belief and not be persecuted for what they believe.” At the end of his briefing, Smith quoted Proverbs 31:8-9 which says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly: defend the rights of the poor and needy.” U.S. to incinerate $10 million worth of contraceptives Reuters reports the United States is planning to incinerate nearly $10 million worth of contraceptives. The stockpile includes contraceptive implants and pills that have been stored in Belgium ever since President Donald Trump put a freeze on U.S. foreign aid. The U.S. turned down offers from the United Nations and other organizations to buy the contraceptives. Instead, the U.S. is having them shipped to a facility in France that handles medical waste. This is in keeping with the Mexico City policy that Trump reinstated in January. The policy blocks U.S. funding to foreign groups that promote abortion. Trump cuts funding for transsexual drugs and surgeries for minors National Review reports the Trump administration is cutting federal funding for “sex trait modifications to minors.” The Department of Health and Human Service is working on a new rule to protect children from transsexual drugs and surgeries. Hospitals that harm children this way would not be allowed to participate in Medicare or Medicaid. An administration official told National Review, “We are actively combing through all federal grants that go to the hospitals that still provide these procedures … to kids, and sorting through what funding could be cut.” Previously-owned homes sales down A report from the National Association of Realtors found the sale of previously owned homes fell 2.7% last month. Meanwhile, the median existing-home sales price is up 2% at $435,300 -- the highest ever. Mortgage rates are also high with the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage coming in at 6.75%. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist at the National Association of Realtors, said, “Multiple years of undersupply are driving the record high home price. Home construction continues to lag population growth. This is holding back first-time home buyers from entering the market.” 25% of Gen Z workers regret college One out of four Gen Z workers regrets going to college, according to a report from Resume Genius. Survey respondents were born between 1997 and 2012. Seventy-three percent of Gen Z employees said they earned a degree. Of those, 21% said they work in a different field than their degree, and 19% said their degree didn't contribute to their career at all. Gen Z workers who studied science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or health professions were the most likely to say their degree contributed to their career. If they could change their education path, 13% of Gen Z workers said they would learn a skilled trade or pursue a career that doesn't require a degree, and 10% would focus on entrepreneurship or self-employment. More young men coming to church And finally, the American Bible Society released results from a flash poll it conducted last week. Over 120 churches around the country responded to the survey. The poll found that 54% of churches are seeing more interest in the Bible among young adults. And 58% said they are seeing more men coming to church. The survey noted, “Churches are seeing more men of all ages, but especially young, walking through their doors. And those who already attended are getting more invested in their faith and involved in their church.” In Titus 2:1, 2, 6, the Apostle Paul wrote, “But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience. … Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, July 24th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Join Jim and Greg for the Wednesday edition of the 3 Martini Lunch as they react to President Trump's cryptic yet playful comments on Iran, break down a major Supreme Court ruling on transgender procedures for minors, and shake their heads at yet another Democrat staging a protest for attention over ICE operations First, they get a kick out of President Trump having fun with a reporter's question about what might come next with Iran and adding, "I may do it. I may may not do it." Jim also wonders whether Trump's tough talk is just a smokescreen while Israel finishes the job at the nuclear sites.Next, they applaud the Supreme Court's decision to uphold Tennessee's law banning transgender surgeries, puberty blockers, and related treatments for minors. Jim says there needs to be a distinction between minors and adults on this issue. They also point out that most kids dealing with gender dysphoria end up embracing the way they were made while the surgeries and drugs are irreversible. Finally, they mock the latest political stunt involving a Democrat getting detained for interfering with ICE operations—this time New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who also happens to be a mayoral candidate with a primary next week. Jim fears this tactic may become a Democratic litmus test in 2026. And they both have fun imagining a more organized way for Dems to carry out their publicity stunts. Please visit our great sponsors:No missed calls, no missed customers with OpenPhone.
