This episode really focuses on the differences of both type 1 and 2 while giving a short lesson on how the pancreas works. But the main difference is that type 1 is permanent and type 2 is usually reversible. They are also completely different mechanisms, meaning type 1 is an autoimmune condition while type 2 is a metabolic condition. We explain more about this and talk about what insulin therapy is and what treatment type 2s usually need. Minter Dialogue with Emmet O'Sullivan Emmet O'Sullivan is 17-years-old, lives in New York. Four years ago, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, an auto-immune disease about which so many people don't know or understand. Son of my friend, Margaret Molloy, Global CMO of Siegel+Gale, Emmet embarked on a new and life-changing journey. He was inspired to use this diagnosis for good and has written and published his first book, Drew (The Dinosaur), Discover the Disease. This illustrated book is designed to bring awareness to this illness and help others to deal with the challenges that come with having to check your sugars and inject Insulin multiple times every day. We talk about how he approached the writing of the book, including how he used AI (MidJourney) to do the illustrations. It's now out in Kindle and paperback. Emmet's an inspiration in the way that he has taken on board his illness and with his desire to educate and help spread awareness. It's a tremendous story. In my ignorance, when Felicity suggested this topic I thought 'that'll be interesting, but I wonder how much being diabetic affects identity.' As a result of this conversation, I am humbled and now fully educated as to the extent of monitoring, tweaking and managing this condition requires, and also the effect on Felicity's view of herself as a professional. At one point, in the interests of being human and illustrating that it's okay to have needs as a clinician, Felicity goes off to inject herself with insulin, and I have a wee!

Today on the show I have first time mama Asha who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as an adult. Going into her first pregnancy she wanted a home birth but of course with her diagnoses the system labelled her automatically as ‘high risk'. Knowing that taking full responsibility for her birth was what was needed, Asha's journey led her to Freebirth, with the support of her husband and a like minded doula. Asha did have some medical prenatal appointments but always knew she would Freebirth at home. Asha had a very straight forward and uneventful 4.5 hour birth which went so so smoothly. Baby was born healthy and she felt great! Asha then called the hospital to let them know baby was here and all was well. Although they were friendly on the phone - a disgruntled midwife then called child protection on the family and what happened next completely disrupted their postpartum bliss bubble. It's a lesson on how easily it all can be disrupted when we invite authority into the birth process - at whatever stage it may be. Although all was well with the authorities in the end, Asha gives us some advice of what she will not be doing next time! Asha is such a gorgeous, informed, level headed and logical Mama who was an absolute pleasure to speak with!
