YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHno0gsX_YA Maylan Newton's family has set aside July 26, 2025, for a special gathering to honor his life and legacy. The event will take place in Southern California, with more details to come. You can find updates and information here. I'd like to take a few moments to reflect on Maylan's impact, both on our industry and on me personally. Whether in a classroom, on a phone call, or standing in front of an audience, Maylan had a way of speaking that was steady, articulate, and always meaningful. His words inspired action, and his delivery made people listen. He was what I like to call an “unselfish” volunteer—selfless in every way, but so dedicated, like helping others was his only priority. He generously donated his time, especially to SkillsUSA, and never hesitated to jump in when needed. If someone called, Maylan would drop everything to lend a hand, whether that meant covering a counter in a shop or stepping in last minute at a conference. Over the past decade, we recorded countless podcast episodes together. He shared solo insights, joined panels, and we had many heart-to-heart conversations that reached thousands. His wisdom, energy, and authenticity were unmatched. Maylan was also the first to nudge me to attend shows, speak on panels, and use my podcast platform to support the industry. He believed in building others up. It didn't matter who got the credit; what mattered to Maylan was the impact. He was a champion for everyone in the industry, especially for women. He supported the Amazing Women in Automotive group with enthusiasm, and you could always count on him to drop by their event dinners just to say hello and show his support. We're going to miss Maylan deeply. But I believe the true depth of that loss will only grow with time, when we find ourselves in need of guidance and asking, “What would Maylan have said?” Rest peacefully, my friend. Trevor Carolan was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for his commitment and passion on and off the field and mat. He expressed that the thing he loves most about high school sports is being able to compete with a group of people who, over time, have become his friends and, most importantly, his brothers. The sports Trevor actively competes in are football, track and field, and wrestling. Outside of sports, he participates in FFA and Skills USA. When Trevor is not competing or working in school, he has volunteered in his community by working for his church and other churches, as well as participating in FFA community service. Trevor believes agriculture is the world's fuel. This means that without the great area of agriculture, the world wouldn't survive. Agriculture is the fuel and lifeblood of the world and economy. After graduating high school, Trevor plans to attend Upper Iowa University and major in ag education and plans to compete in their football team. Hey everyone, Matt Bogoshian here! On this episode of Manufacturing an American Century, I sit down with Mark Hedstrom, CEO of the Skilled Careers Coalition, to discuss the big-picture challenge of getting more young people into skilled careers. We dig into why these careers—especially in manufacturing—are essential for America's future and why we need to shake the outdated stigma around them.Mark shares how his background in philanthropy and collective impact work is helping to bring together education, industry, and entertainment to reach more students and parents. We also get into how storytelling (and yes, even TikTok) plays a massive role in getting young people to see skilled careers as a smart and fulfilling option. And for those working in workforce development, Mark lays out some ideas on how we can better connect regional best practices and scale them up nationwide. Plus, we talk about the power of partnerships—like how Warner Bros. Discovery is using entertainment to spotlight these career paths. Give it a listen, and let's talk about how we can go further, faster in solving this workforce challenge together!AMCC's podcast is made possible in part by the expertise of Mike McAllen, founder of Podcasting4Associations. This podcast episode focuses on the critical shortage of HVACR technicians and installers across the industry. The hosts discuss the massive gap that exists, with estimates of nearly 200,000 open roles expected in the next few years. They are joined by Lenny Diaddario from Copeland's contractor services department and Chris Harris from the educational nonprofit National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3). Lenny and Chris explain the various initiatives Copeland and NC3 have undertaken to help attract more people to the HVACR trades. This includes STEM education outreach to get kids interested from an early age, partnerships with organizations like SkillsUSA and PHCC, virtual reality training tools that allow interactive compressor teardowns, and comprehensive certification curricula developed in collaboration with subject matter experts and instructors. One major program they highlight is the "train the trainer" events where instructors from trade schools can get certified on the Copeland curriculum over an intensive week. They then take that knowledge back to their schools to teach and certify students as Copeland technicians. The goal is to build a strong foundational workforce of certified HVACR professionals. Topics covered include: The severe shortage of HVACR technicians and the need to fill roles Changing the stigma around vocational education and trade schools Appeal of trades to younger generations for self-reliance Copeland's initiatives like STEM days, SkillsUSA, virtual reality trainers NC3's certification curricula and "train the trainer" instructor events Copeland's online/mobile training resources like apps and AI assistant In-person training courses offered ranging from 1 day to multi-day The long-term vision for socioeconomic impact through a skilled trades workforce Browse some of Copeland's training opportunities at https://www.copeland.com/en-us/training-support/hvacr-training. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: TOM WAGES STORY 1: Lawrenceville Police say Hyundai and Kia thefts are up Lawrenceville police have issued a warning to owners of certain Hyundai and Kia models, urging increased vigilance due to a surge in thefts. The vulnerability, tied to an absent security feature in the ignition switch, affects vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021 that use traditional turnkey ignition systems instead of push-button starts. In response, Kia has supplied steering wheel locks to the police department for distribution to local residents. Vehicle owners from the specified years can obtain a lock by reaching out to Capt. Salvador Ortega via email. To further safeguard their vehicles, police suggest implementing additional security measures such as installing kill switches, battery disconnects, alarms, and GPS tracking devices, and ensuring cars are parked in well-lit, secure areas. STORY 2: Gwinnett County Public Schools Launches AI Policy Lab Gwinnett County Public Schools, in collaboration with the EdSAFE AI Alliance, has announced the creation of an AI Policy Lab. This initiative is dedicated to fostering the safe and ethical implementation of artificial intelligence within educational settings. The lab will provide comprehensive policy recommendations alongside educational materials aimed at teachers, students, and parents, emphasizing practical applications of AI. Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of GCPS, highlighted the critical importance of instilling responsible AI practices among students to equip them adequately for future professional environments. This endeavor enhances GCPS's ongoing commitment to AI education, building on the foundation set by the AI-Future Ready pilot initiated in 2019. It also contributes to broader national discussions focused on establishing guidelines that ensure AI is used in ways that are safe, responsible, inclusive, and beneficial within the educational sphere. STORY 3: Lilburn gets federal funds for police, Camp Creek efforts Lilburn has successfully obtained federal funding amounting to $1.8 million through the 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act, earmarked for two pivotal projects. The allocation will be divided equally between enhancing public safety and environmental preservation efforts. The first half of the funding supports the Tri-City Connect Program, a collaborative effort with Lawrenceville and Snellville. This initiative aims to bolster public safety by creating a video and data sharing platform. It encourages residents and businesses to voluntarily register their security cameras, facilitating quicker resolution of criminal activities by law enforcement agencies. The remaining funds are allocated to the stabilization of Camp Creek. This project is vital for maintaining the integrity of the 4.2-mile Camp Creek Greenway Trail, a cherished community asset for recreation and nature engagement. U.S. Representative Lucy McBath has been instrumental in securing these funds, demonstrating her dedication to advancing the welfare and safety of the community.
