BEN HABIB, JIM ALLISTER & DAN BOUCHER GIVE US OUR COUNTRY BACK GLOBAL DISCUSSION FORUM EPISODE 06 Give Us Our Country Back: Focusing on the internationally totemic issue of Northern Ireland's people being subject to EU laws over which they have no say, and over which their politicians have no vote. To support Jim Allister's bill, visit: https://www.restoretheunion.co.uk First keynote speaker: Jim Allister KC MP Jim Allister KC is the MP for North Antrim having previously represented the constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly from 2011-2024. He represented Northern Ireland in the European Parliament from 2004-09. A strong Unionist, Jim is an implacable opponent of the Irish Sea Border, a stand which was critical in seeing him returned to Parliament at the last election overturning one of the largest majorities in Northern Ireland to do so. To follow or contact Ben Habib, visit: https://x.com/JimAllister Second keynote speaker: Dr. Dan Boucher Dr Dan Boucher has a PhD in sovereignty and international relations. Author of The Big Society in a Small Country, he was until September 2021 a member of the Conservative Party and stood as a Conservative candidate in Wales. Unable to reconcile himself with the Northern Ireland Protocol, he resigned from the Conservative Party and joined the DUP, subsequently becoming their Director of Policy. Dismayed by the 'Safeguarding the Union' deal that the DUP did with the UK government he resigned his position in April 2024. Widely published in the Belfast Newsletter, Conservative Home, Facts4EU, Comment Central, and Brexit Central, he is writing a book on the impact of the Windsor Framework on the future of the United Kingdom. To follow or contact Ben Habib, visit: https://x.com/DansBoucher Surprise guest speaker: Ben Habib Delightfully eloquent, highly intelligent, well-informed, and occasionally argumentative(!), Ben is a former Member of the European Parliament and now former Deputy Leader of Reform UK. Drawing upon his time as a MEP, Ben has particular insight into the workings of the EU Parliament and the EU Commission. He also addresses the recent fallout he has had with Reform UK Leader, Nigel Farage. Jack Fenwick explores how the think tanks and pressure groups behind the black door of an anonymous building in Westminster have shaped the last decade of British politics - and asks how they might shape the next few years. For this programme Jack has spoken to more than 50 current and former government insiders about how the organisations based at 55 Tufton Street have influenced British public life. He reveals how organisations including the Taxpayers Alliance, Brexit Central and the Global Warming Policy Foundation helped set the narrative on issues such as austerity, Brexit and climate change. He tracks how some of their ideas become government policy, explores the issue of whether the rules governing these organisations need to change and, with a new Prime Minister in Number 10, he asks how the ideas developed behind one black door might influence policy behind the most famous black door in Britain. Producer and presenter: Jack Fenwick Assistant producer: Maddy Trimmer.
If you were wondering what happened to Brexit then look no further than this webinar with Jonathan Isaby, recent editor of Brexit Central. He talks us through the final stages of Brexit and what it means for business. Drawing on his time at the Taxpayer's Alliance and Conservative Home, we also chat about centre right politics and where next for Boris and Rishi. Finally, we hear how Jonathan almost single-handedly saved General Election night! It's a conversation not to be missed, if you're remotely interested in Brexit, taxation, or politics.
In this episode Christian is joined by Matthew Elliott, a veteran political campaigner, having been CEO of two successful referendum campaigns - NOtoAV in 2011 and Vote Leave in 2016. He also founded the TaxPayers' Alliance, Big Brother Watch, Business for Britain and Brexit Central. He has been described by the New Statesman as "one of the most successful - and feared - campaigners in British politics". He is now a Senior Adviser to Shore Capital and a regular commentator on political and economic issues. Matthew talks about his optimism for a UK-EU Brexit deal by December and offers his thoughts on how the chancellor should respond to the economic crisis caused by Coronavirus. He warns against tax rises and anything that could deter international investment, and urges the government to support businesses and entrepreneurs as the country emerges from lockdown. Also in this episode, Christian looks at the UK's offer of citizenship to Hong Kong residents; the chances of a Brexit deal for financial services; and the ongoing debate about a shorter trading day in the markets. Brexit Breakdown podcast: Jonathan Isaby, Brexit Central by The UK in a Changing Europe
Welcome back to the first( or is it the second?) podcast of 2017. This week Lesley is in fine form as she dashes through a packed past seven days. There's her wee stushy wi' the man frae Brexit Central on Scotland tonight. Theresa May's 12 point plan for( you guessed it) Brexit. And the Scottish Independence Convention's conference in Glasgow. I do a lot more listening and asking questions than normal( sighs of relief all round) as we wonder if the Scottish conversation has moved beyond the single market and free trade areas. However I do manage to slip in some references to my football team.
