Why are Americans going broke trying to stay healthy? The real question is why is healthcare in America so expensive in the first place — and who profits from it?On this episode of the Lean to the Left podcast, Bob Gatty talks with Dr. Adam Cunningham, founder of Sylk Health, about the hidden costs of healthcare, the medical debt crisis, and why millions of Americans are struggling to afford treatment. They discuss:• Why hospital pricing is intentionally hidden• How medical debt drives bankruptcy in America• Why healthcare has become a social justice issue• The shocking cost differences between U.S. and overseas treatment• Medical tourism and affordable care abroad• Insurance companies, hospital lobbying, and pharmaceutical profits• Medicare, supplemental insurance, and rising costs for seniors• Alzheimer's care and the crushing financial burden on families• Why meaningful healthcare reform remains so difficultDr. Cunningham explains how Sylk Health compares medical procedure costs between the U.S. and accredited hospitals in China, giving patients new options when facing massive medical bills. This conversation goes beyond politics and gets to the heart of a broken healthcare system that leaves working families drowning in debt while corporations profit.

Two years ago — on April 27, 2024 — Mica Francis was found dead in a North Carolina swamp after diverting from her normal routine to purchase a pawnshop firearm.  Her ex-husband JP Miller is charged with federal counts of cyberstalking and lying to investigators which may head to trial this June.  On this episode, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are joined by attorney Mandy Powers Norrell (MPN), a former South Carolina state legislator who helped write the state's 2015 domestic violence statute and now prosecutes those cases out of the Lancaster County Solicitor's Office.  MPN walks us through why "Mica's Law," the coercive control bill named in Francis's memory, was rushed through a Senate subcommittee for the fourth session in a row — and what it actually takes to move a victims' bill in a legislature where paid lobbyists set the tone. The conversation dives deep on strangulation as a predictor of homicide, why DV charges still get pleaded down to assault and battery, DARVO, sleep deprivation as psychological warfare, and how Hollywood's age-gap fairy tales primed a generation of girls to mistake control for love. 1. U.S. Military Pressure on Iran via the Strait of Hormuz The U.S., under President Trump, is enforcing a naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz. An Iranian‑flagged cargo ship allegedly attempted to run the blockade and was disabled by the U.S. Navy, boarded, and seized after warnings. The action is deliberate, proportionate, and militarily precise, intended to deter further attempts. 2. Economic Warfare as Primary Strategy The blockade is an economic weapon, not a prolonged war. Iran is portrayed as losing hundreds of millions of dollars per day in exports and imports due to the blockade. Oil exports—described as Iran’s economic lifeline—are emphasized as being almost entirely dependent on Gulf shipping routes. 3. Severe Impact on Iran’s Oil Sector Iran has limited oil storage capacity; if exports stop, wells must be shut in. Shutting in wells is described as causing permanent damage to oil fields (water coning), leading to lasting production losses. This is presented as long‑term leverage that could cripple Iran’s future revenue even if sanctions end. 4. Currency Collapse and Domestic Economic Crisis Iran’s currency (the rial) is described as undergoing hyperinflation. Banks are reportedly limiting cash withdrawals to very small daily amounts. Food prices and inflation are framed as spiraling, increasing public pressure on the regime. 5. Strategic Pressure on China Because much of Iran’s oil allegedly goes to China, the blockade is also meant to force China to pressure Iran into negotiations. The timing is framed as optimal due to oil supply rerouting and OPEC production adjustments minimizing global disruption. 6. Arrests and Enforcement Beyond the Battlefield The arrest of an Iranian arms broker in the U.S. is cited as proof of aggressive global enforcement against Iranian weapons trafficking. This supports the narrative that Iran is being squeezed financially, militarily, and legally at the same time. 7. Rejection of “Quagmire” Narrative This is not another Iraq or Afghanistan: No U.S. boots on the ground Limited, targeted military actions Defined economic and security goals Critics, especially Democrats, are politically motivated rather than security‑focused. Qatar’s Influence Campaign in the U.S. 8. Qatar as a Major Funder of U.S. Universities Qatar is described as the largest foreign donor to U.S. universities over several decades. Funding is framed as a tool to shape academic, cultural, and political opinion in its favor. 9. Connection to Campus Unrest There is a correlation between universities receiving Qatari funding and anti‑Israel or antisemitic campus protests. Universities are vulnerable to foreign influence due to financial incentives. 10. Hiring of Washington Lobbyists Qatar‑linked organizations allegedly hired major D.C. PR and lobbying firms. Purpose: reputation management, crisis response, and influencing Congress and the administration. These efforts are framed as an attempt to “whitewash” Qatar’s alleged support for Hamas and Islamist movements. 11. Control Over Academic Speech One example cited is a U.S. university campus in Qatar with contractual restrictions on criticizing the Qatari regime. This is used to argue that financial dependence undermines academic freedom. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. This week, we unpack the 26 cent fuel excise cut that's supposed to save you money at the pump while the government quietly hands over $10 billion a year in petrol subsidies to Gina and her mining mates. We break down why this three month discount costs taxpayers $2.5 billion, how 15 mining companies pocket $3 billion a year from fuel tax rebates punters never get, and why even Fortescue's CEO Dino Otranto is calling out the scam on LinkedIn. CBA Boss Backs Gas Tax & The Lobbyist Power Play The head of Commonwealth Bank publicly backs a windfall profits tax on gas companies, and we explain why corporate Australia is finally picking sides. We meet Punter Rachel, the crowd funded lobbyist hired with your $80,000 to take on the gas cartel in Canberra. She breaks down her strategy for targeting marginal seats, lobbying crossbenchers, and preparing for budget week to expose exactly what the gas lobby asked for and what they got. Nanny State Update: P Platers Banned From Google Maps Queensland police confirm that learner and P plate drivers are banned from using Google Maps on their phones, even hands free, even through Bluetooth, but they're legally allowed to unfold a street directory while driving. We sound the nanny state alarm again and explain why this rule is peak Karen policy that makes young drivers less safe, not more. UNBIASED University is in session! While Jordan is on maternity leave, she's breaking down the most critical aspects of the United States government — the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the three branches of the federal government, presidential elections, the evolution of political parties, and more. In this episode of UNBIASED University, we pull back the curtain on the hidden power players in Washington and examine how influence actually works behind the scenes. Who are lobbyists, what do they legally do, and how do Political Action Committees, Super PACs, and so-called dark money groups operate within the campaign finance system? We break down the difference between direct lobbying and independent expenditures, how campaign finance laws have evolved over time, and what Supreme Court decisions have shaped the modern political funding landscape. We also explain the rules around disclosure, coordination, and contribution limits so you can better understand what is legal, what is controversial, and why these systems generate so much debate. Whether you view these groups as essential participants in a representative democracy or as outsized influencers in American politics, this episode provides a clear, nonpartisan explanation of how money and advocacy intersect with power in Washington. She also covers the viral pressure on Senator John Thune over the SAFE Act, highlighting how social media activism is exposing lies and holding politicians accountable. From taxpayer-funded pet projects to cyber threats from China and Iran, this episode dives into the chaos in both state and national politics—and why your voice matters. Summary South Carolina Budget Blowout Spending vs. Population: State legislature plans an 8.75% budget increase despite just 1.5% population growth. Taxpayer-Funded Pet Projects: Grants for lesbian podcasts, lewd art exhibits, drag shows, and “inflation-busting” tuition mitigation. Lobbyists on Payroll: Taxpayers fund lobbyists to push agencies for more money every year. Committee Control: Key budget subcommittees for arts, commerce, and healthcare are chaired by Democrats, even under a Republican supermajority, leading to controversial allocations. Freedom Caucus Oversight: Only 17 conservative legislators actively research, amend, and vote against wasteful spending. John Thune & the SAFE Act Viral Accountability: Millions of social media users are exposing Thune's false claims that the SAFE Act lacks sufficient votes. 51 Votes Secured: Despite Thune claiming 60 are needed, at least 51 senators publicly support the bill, enough to pass with the vice president as tie-breaker. Media Debunking: Figures like Dave Rubin are calling out Thune's lies online, reaching audiences larger than the combined mainstream media. Public Pressure Works: Repeated viral posts on X show how grassroots activism forces transparency and accountability in real time. Additional National Issues Pentagon Spending Myths: Viral claims about wasteful spending on lobster and steak for troops are debunked, revealing partisan media misinformation. Cybersecurity Threats: Iran and China pose ongoing cyber threats, while DHS and CISA remain underfunded, hampering national defense and early-warning systems. Tara emphasizes: know where your money goes, hold politicians accountable, and stay vigilant as both state and national politics become increasingly transparent thanks to social media. Key Topics SC state budget & overspending Taxpayer-funded arts, LGBTQ projects, and corporate subsidies Freedom Caucus vs. establishment Republicans John Thune & SAFE Act misrepresentations Viral social media activism & political accountability Pentagon spending myths debunked Cybersecurity threats from China & Iran Social Media Post

Mississippi Lobbyist Drama Exposed: Secret Kickbacks on Traffic Ticket Revenue In this no-holds-barred segment, Clay Edwards and Andrew Gasser rip the lid off a shady Mississippi lobbyist scheme that's got people furious. Two politically wired insiders — attorney Tammra Casico and consultant Ted Thompson — signed secret contracts promising them a $6 cut of every traffic ticket generated by the controversial Securix camera system (the red-light cams catching uninsured drivers). The dirty part? The contracts explicitly told them to hide their personal financial stake from the very cities they were “advising.” What started in Ocean Springs was spreading statewide, with the deals disguised as straight legal advice while the lobbyists quietly cashed in. It gets even thicker: the whole operation ties straight back to heavyweight consultant Josh Gregory and Frontier Strategies — the same firm that runs campaigns for half the big names in Mississippi politics. They were reportedly pulling $36 out of every $300 fine collected. Clay and Andrew call it exactly what it is: legal or not, it feels slimy as hell — multilayered kickbacks, zero transparency, and everyday drivers footing the bill for backroom profits. This is the kind of insider grift that makes people hate politics, and they don't hold back breaking it all down.

On today's show, host Esty Dinur is in conversation with writer and journalist Casey Michel about Greenland, kleptocracy, the Epstein files, and more. Michel says that “the preponderance of corruption is nothing like we've ever seen before” in the US. Though money has always shaped American politics, the scope and scale of what's happening under the Trump regime is unprecedented.  Michel has written multiple books about corruption in American politics, including American Kleptocracy, Foreign Agents, and the forthcoming United States of Oligarchy. His reporting on Trump's attempts to take over Greenland reveals a web of financial interests at play. Trump is being guided by the interests of wealthy donors and corporations who want to mine the “whole periodic table of elements” that are being blocked by environmental and labor regulations imposed by Greenland, Denmark, and the EU. He says that the financiers pulling the strings want to build a super power where there is no democracy, taxes, or any restrictions on their actions, and authoritarians like Trump are happy to help them. Note: This pledge drive interview was edited to remove parts of the show dedicated to station fundraising. We thank our listeners for their generous support. Casey Michel is an American writer and journalist who covers international corruption, dark money, and foreign influence for a range of outlets, including The New York Times, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, and more. He has written multiple books on these topics, including “American Kleptocracy” and “Foreign Agents,” and his new book “United States of Oligarchy” will be released in August. He is currently sanctioned by the Russian regime for his work. Featured image of the cover of Casey Michel's book, American Kleptocracy. Did you enjoy this story?
