Sonia Sodha of The Observer is joined by a range of guests to analyse the latest developments at Westminster. To discuss the confrontation between Israel and Iran she speaks to former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith and former British diplomat Sir William Patey. Following newspaper allegations about Conservative MP Mark Menzies she looks at how parties deal with such issues with Francis Elliott, editor of The House magazine, and Anne Perkins, a former political correspondent for The Guardian. Paul Johnson of The Institute for Fiscal Studies explains some new research looking at the success of SureStart and discusses how future governments can do meaningful social policy in an era of fiscal restraint. And, to reflect on the release of Liz Truss's book and her opposition to Rishi Sunak's smoking ban, Sonia is joined by Mark Littlewood, director of the Truss-supporting 'Popular Conservatism' group, and Anna Soubry, a former Conservative MP and public health minister.
Anna became the closest thing to a regular for a while and this first appearance on the show in 2017 is why. At the time she was a Conservative MP but you totally understand why she didn't remain as one for long after this interview. A passionate and funny communicator, she was clearly horrified about what was happening in British politics. She was totally inspirational every time she came on the show. David Cameron is back in government as the new Foreign Secretary. UN experts have warned the UK government that its treatment of unaccompanied asylum seeker children is increasing the risk that they could be trafficked and is breaching international law. A statement issued yesterday expressed concern about the fate of children who had gone missing and has urged that the government does more to protect them. Yesterday a 19-year-old who stabbed another teenager to death in a quiet Somerset town was found guilty of murder. Joshua Delbono stabbed 16-year-old Charley Bates in Radstock, Somerset, on 31 July last year. It was Delbono's mother Donna who called the police and told them her son had killed Charley. This is a very serious crime which perhaps made it a clear cut decision for Donna Delbono to call the police but what about when it comes to other issues, if you knew your teenage child was taking or dealing drugs, stealing, or maybe drink driving - Would you ever call the police on your child? If, so at what point would you do it? Former detective superintendent Shabnam Chauhdri and former Conservative MP, parent and now criminal barrister Anna Soubry discuss. As Ukrainian resistance awes the world, can EU sanctions stop Russia – or are the risks of confronting Putin just too great? Plus the Government's cruel refugee policy, unexplained oligarch wealth, and the ignominy of Stop The War. This week's special guest is former Conservative MP, defence minister and Change UK leader Anna Soubry. “Ukraine has made people realise what the nature of a refugee really is.” – Anna Soubry “The financial assault on Russia is economic warfare of the highest order.” – Ian Dunt “Parliament voting against airstrikes in Syria in 2013 was a dreadful mistake. It showed Putin he could essentially do what he wanted.” – Anna Soubry “There are two frontlines. There's the battle in Ukraine and the financial assault on Russia.” – Ian Dunt “This is almost a betrayal… We have spent eyewatering amounts of money on nuclear weapons and it turns out that the bully can win anyway?” – Ann Soubry “Zelenskyy puts himself in the public eye and in harm's way, exactly the way Putin doesn't.” – Naomi Smith Find resources to help the Ukrainian people here: https://ukrainewar.carrd.co/ www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Ian Dunt and Naomi Smith. Deliberate, brazen and direct, Anna Soubry is one of the most outspoken figures in UK politics, and yet she’s also someone who refuses to get her fingers dirty in the cesspits of populist extremism. In this week’s Power Done Differently episode, the former barrister, journalist, MP and Government Minister joins me as we dissect the decline, and tribalisation, of the Liberal Democrat party, the Remain side’s failure to use emotion when campaigning for a second EU referendum, and why women in political offices are both criminally underrepresented, and then over-scrutinised. Anna also shares her experience of abuse, harassment and death threats in the wake of fellow MP Jo Cox’s murder. Unapologetic yet empathetic throughout, Anna showcases a brand of political leader who we’ve not seen much of in recent years. It makes you wonder, where have all the good ones gone? Britain held it's referendum to leave the European Union in 2016. It has taken years of internal debate and political conflict to determine how to leave. Because Europe is a vital trading partner of The U.K. So Britain needs a trade deal or it's economy will be in tatters. It's close. Close to crashing out of Europe at the end of 2020 with no deal. And close to a deal that will be hotly debated in Britain. And all this for what? Sovereignty? Over? Fishing waters? There are eerie parallels to the populist false politics of Donald Trump in America. On this Back Story Host Dana Lewis talks to Anna Soubry, lawyer and former member of the Conservative Government, which called the BREXIT referendum in 2016. She says it was a horrible mistake. And, we also talk to former EU Parliamentarian Irina Von Weiss, British commentator Jo Phillips, and from Germany EU member of Parliament Terry Reintke who has called Boris Johnson a liar on BREXIT.

As the UK edges closer to 40,000 coronavirus deaths, there is uproar in the country over the behavior of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s chief political advisor Dominic Cummings, who drove nearly 300 miles across England while the public were being urged not to leave their homes. Mr Cummings stands unapologetic, and with the support of the Prime Minister behind him, is this another example of one rule for the people and one for the elite? Anna Soubry, former UK Health Minister, and Mark Landler, London bureau chief at The New York Times, join Christiane Amanpour to discuss the controversy. Music producer Drew Dixon and author Joan Morgan talk to Christiane about ‘Off the Record’, an HBO documentary chronicling the allegations of sexual assault made against hip hop mogul Russell Simmons. They reflect on how black women have been treated by the #MeToo movement, and why the film almost didn’t make it to air. And French street artist JR, known for his giant photographs of faces in urban areas, tells our Hari Sreenivasan about how lockdown is inspiring him.
Democratic Senator for Connecticut Chris Murphy tells Christiane Amanpour that the people protesting the stay-at-home-orders only represent the minority of Americas and their protests are perfect for TV. He says most Americans don't want to open the economy too early and disregarding expert advice could be catastrophic. Former UK Health Minister Anna Soubry argues that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's complacency in the critical early period of the coronavirus is reflective of his character. For example, the former Conservative MP highlights his failure to lead early COBRA meetings. With over 1.5 billion kids out of school worldwide, teaching practices have had to dramatically adapt. John B. King, former U.S. Secretary of Education and CEO of The Education Trust, talks to our Hari Sreenivasan about the pitfalls of remote learning during the current pandemic and lockdown in the United States. Dr. Sharon Moalem author of "The Better Half," unpacks why coronavirus affects men more than women.

Jonathan Dimbleby presents political debate from Middlesbrough Town Hall.
In the wake of Britain's 2017 General Election, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron resigned from his post, citing the pressures of reconciling his evangelical Christian faith with the commitments of political leadership, illustrated by the questions he faced throughout the campaign on his attitudes to homosexuality. Two years earlier, days after becoming leader, a tweet appeared on the @timfarron Twitter account that he claimed was a malicious hack, raising concerns about a process called chemical leaching having adverse affects on the sexuality of fish and frogs. In this exclusive, and no doubt highly fictionalised, radio play - free of charge for the masses - Reel Politik chart the course of Farron's pre-leadership career, stripping away inconvenient facts to find the underlying "ecstatic truth" behind the man, the life, and the life's work. Whilst we reiterate much of the play has little or no basis in reality -indeed, the story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this production are fictitious. No identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings, and products is intended or should be inferred - underlying it is an historical account of British liberal politics in the last three decades, and how it sank into its present malaise. Written and produced by Tom Foster & Jack Frayne-Reid. Starring Tom Foster as Tim Farron, with Jack Frayne-Reid, alongside Laura Jolyon Tidd and Yair Rice, as all supporting characters. Songs by Jack Frayne-Reid, with additional music by Tom Foster & Dominic Menham. Executive producer tom disso. Written and recorded throughout 2017-18. When the British people voted to “take back control” and leave the EU, you have to wonder if they were doing so looking forward to passing references to technocratic policy detail filtered through a Westminster melodrama, a sort of Tory Battle Royale played out by Jacob Rees-Mogg, Boris Johnson and Anna Soubry, with people's opinions wielded as a weapon to shut down debate. But here we are. As Brexit shudders on, We spoke to Dr Marina Prentoulis, from Another Europe Is Possible, about the politics, the press and the possibilities. "rp" (stylised in lowercase letters), sometimes subtitled "Our First Episode In What Feels Like Forever", is the 61st episode of the British podcast Reel Politik, released on June 4, 2018, by Reel Politik. The episode features RP founders Tom Foster & Jack Frayne-Reid and uncredited appearances by Laura Jolyon Tidd as Margaret Thatcher and Anna Soubry. Frayne-Reid produced the episode in its entirety, in a very meglomaniacal fashion. (*stops mimicking "ye" Wikipedia page*) "rp" deals with the spiteful idiocy of Eddie Marsan, and asks who is the biggest Tory in the UK film industry, besides Marsan himself? We serenade you with the legend of Cajun guitarist Rusty Kershaw, who contributed to Neil Young's timeless On The Beach album. We look at the #FBPE movement - the biggest bunch of crank wankers on the whole of Twitter and possibly in the entire world - and analyse the Tories' paid troll army and the remarkable propaganda accomplishment that is "centrist-dad.com". We discuss unpopular opinions, serial Wikipedia editors/journalists, and the pitfalls of "both sidesism", before, finally, Tom raises the dreaded spectre of a second EU referendum. #FBPE #WATON #ABTV #PeoplesVote #ACGrayling4PM

It's been nearly a year since I {William} was in sunny Thailand and posting podcast shows. When I was out there Anna's PA Sean contacted me (thanks to Paddy Ashdown) that Anna would be happy to have a conversation with me, To this day (which isn't saying that much I know)it was probably the most excited I have been to obtain an interview. Anna is one of the very last hopes that The Tories have. Of course we can't discount Dominic Grieve and Ken Clarke but of course she's fabulous. In this interview she calls out Theresa May for leaving behind so many of the Remain voters and the wretched tone she set at her first party conference. It's really worth a listen. I think it's worth noting that Theresa and Co have been dishing out this Brexit Bollocks for a rather substantive amount of time and still they are unable to persuade the likes of Anna, Dominic and Ken who are very much small L Tory members of Parliament that really do love their party. Enjoy and of course if you can share the episode it really does mean a lot to the overall Limehouse Podcast project, I really mean that! @limehousepod thelimehousepodcast@gmail.com

Douglas Carswell, Patrick Minford, Anna Soubry and Alexander Stubb did battle over this all-important decision, and star BBC World News presenter Zeinab Badawi was in the chair. So-called ‘hard Brexiters’ like Douglas Carswell are adamant that Britain must regain its status as a sovereign nation with full control of its borders, laws, money and trade. Anything less would be a betrayal of the majority who voted Leave in the referendum last June. If that means severe restrictions on Britain’s access to the single market, so be it. We don’t have to heed the warnings of the doom-mongerers: Britain is the world’s fifth largest economy and other countries, whether in or out of the EU, are going to want to do business with us. What’s more, Europe is beginning to look like a ticking time bomb. The eurozone is in crisis and Britain’s relatively healthy growth and unemployment figures show what a wise move it was not to sign up to the euro in 2002. And now things are looking decidedly scary, with Angela Merkel’s rashly generous immigration policies fuelling voter discontent across the continent, and populist parties on the rise in every member state. The response from EU leaders such as Jean-Claude Juncker to this disgruntlement? Ever closer integration, the very thing that the voters are rejecting. If the EU implodes, we’ll be grateful to have put ourselves at a safe distance. This is rubbish, according to those who think the Leave vote was a mistake. If we have to go through with Brexit, then the UK should do everything it can to salvage our current relationship with our EU partners – and that means keeping access to the single market. Withdrawing from it would do untold damage to British jobs and prosperity, especially in our car industry and financial services. Countries such as Norway show that it is perfectly possible to be inside the single market but outside the EU, even if there is a price to pay in terms of membership dues and some compromise over freedom of movement from the member states. And let’s not kid ourselves that keeping out foreign workers will provide more jobs for British citizens. Our economy depends heavily on migrant workers, and if we don’t bring them in from outside we risk exporting many of our manufacturing jobs to foreign countries with cheaper labour. This is the case that Anna Soubry and Alexander Stubb will be making. As Britain redefines its place in the world, major decisions will have to be made on what our priority should be – controlling our borders with Europe or keeping our markets open to it.
