It wasn't always like this. Just decades ago, working people had power to leverage governments, ensuring our politicians weren't just capitulating to markets — they were also working to keep people happy who had the power to shut the economy down. Then our unions disappeared. Since then, the markets and states have worked in tandem to secure power and wealth, stripping everyday people from their communities, a sense of purpose, and their source of power: collectivism. Part of how they've done this, argues political economist Grace Blakeley, is create the illusion of markets and states being at odds with one another, of existing separately rather than being both sides of the same coin. She joins me to explain how we came to think of the economy as an abstract entity, why politicians throw working people under the bus the minute they come to power, and how people can organise to resist the erosion of their lives and livelihoods by reinvigorating local economies. To learn more, you can read Grace's most recent book, Vulture Capitalism. You can also read her regular analyses on Substack, and support her latest venture, the What Can We Do newsletter which platforms British communities who are organising pockets of resistance against neoliberal capitalism. Half a year ago, the Labour Party swept into power with a huge parliamentary majority and Kier Starmer celebrated by saying that the country could “get its future back”. Today, Labour are dogged by low approval ratings, having upset everyone from environmentalists to pensioners, farmers to small-business owners. And just last week Reform overtook both the Conservatives and Labour in a poll of voting intentions - suggesting the public are already looking for an alternative. So, why has the public seemingly turned on the Labour Party? Should they be threatened by the rise of Reform? And how can the progressive movement push this government to create the world we want? EP 357 - As COP 29 draws to a close in sunny, oil rich Azerbaijan we revisit our spirited conversation with political economist Grace Blakeley. We talk about Green New Deals and why we need to restore faith in democracy above all else.Grace makes a compelling point that dealing with Climate Change shouldn't be put on the shoulders of individuals but those of institutions and businesses, as only they can affect the systemic changes required. We discuss how investing money in fixing problems now will pay for itself in the long run (it worked after WWII after all) and how community wealth building offers a credible alternative to the idea of “stakeholder capitalism”.Spoiler alert - Grace is not a fan of stakeholder capitalism.Chapters:00:00 BWB with Grace Blakeley02:10 Meet Grace02:44 Climate Change and the Green New Deal06:25 Economic Inequality and Political Disconnect16:33 Taxation and Wealth Distribution24:31 Community Wealth Building: The Preston Model25:59 Stakeholder Capitalism: Myth or Reality?31:35 Introduction to the Grace's Career31:54 Writing and Media Appearances32:17 Grace's New Book: Vulture Capitalism32:55 Career Journey and Early Experiences34:03 Long-Term Goals and Challenges of Writing36:03 Grace's Upcoming Projects37:13 Biggest Mistakes and Lessons Learned38:23 Passions Outside of Work40:28 Advice and Reflections45:53 Quickfire Round - Get To Know Grace52:05 Wrap Upbusinesswithoutbullshit.meWatch us on YouTubeFollow us:InstagramTikTokLinkedinTwitterIf you'd like to be on the show, get in contact - mail@businesswithoutbullshit.meBWB is powered by Oury Clark

If you've ever found yourself feeling skeptical about capitalism (or the idea that its current iteration is the best and only economic system worthy of our attention), this episode is for you. Happy Monday! Sam speaks with Grace Blakeley, English economics & politics commentator, staff writer at Tribune, to discuss her recent book Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom. First, Sam runs through updates on the final 14 days before the US presidential election, Israel's ongoing assault on Palestine and potential pivot to Iran, environmental disaster in Cuba, Elon Musk's failures and fraud in his work alongside the Trump campaign, National Association of Letter Carriers' labor news, Tesla's regulatory problems, and the US economy, before diving a little deeper into the insanity of Elon Musk launching contrasting ad campaigns in Michigan attempting to stoke anti-Semitic and Islamophobic fears in Muslim and Jewish communities. Grace Blakeley then joins, first working to unpack the commonly accepted dichotomy between capitalism and a centrally-planned (socialist) economy, with the dystopia of socialism juxtaposed by liberalism's vision of free-market democracy, before wading into the problems and inaccuracies of this binary, namely the fact that liberalism's defining qualities (free-markets and democracy) don't apply to the existing capitalist societies of today (particularly the largest imperial powers like the US and UK), where wealth and political power are becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer elites, translating into what is essentially centrally-planned oligarchy. Blakeley steps back to walk through the evolution of capitalism to this point, tackling neoliberals' work to publically redefine a libertarian “free market” as a return to natural systems, while elites privately saw it as an explicit vision to protect corporate power amid rising social movements, establishing clear economic norms against anything that could threaten privatization, the free movement of capital, and low tax rates, while creating international institutions (backed by the West) to dole out punishment for any revolutionary states that sought to challenge them abroad, before touching on the contrasting work of a Keynesian vision – backed by the working class – that pushed the idea of a protective state and well-regulated markets, and exploring the major success this ideology had in bolstering the US labor movement of the mid-20th Century. Next, Grace walks Sam through the eventual success of neoliberal theory with the regimes of Pinochet, Thatcher, and Reagan in the late 1970s and early '80s, and their overwhelming work to crush and fragment the working class and social power that had bolstered the social and economic progress of the century to that point, setting the stage for the solidification of the oligarchies we see today. After briefly touching on the value of a return to a more Keynesian vision for economies, and the central importance of revitalizing working-class power, Berkeley wraps up the interview by exploring a few other visions for strong, democratic, and worker-led economies. And in the Fun Half: Sam unpacks Trump's most recent insult to workers (and whether that will even translate past the absurdity of it), and Elon Musk's ongoing fraudulent and stochastic canvassing work for the Trump campaign. Obama walks through Trump's extensive effort to undermine the US' capacity to respond to pandemics, and Jim Breuer does… something… but it's definitely racist. The MR Team also talks with John from TBurg about Ohio's Issue 1, Matt from Tennessee about the moral monstrosity that is Richie Torres, and Noah from Nashville on Harris and the Left, plus, your calls and IMs! They say money can't buy happiness, but it can buy power, freedom, and security. The one per cent – who control nearly half of the world's wealth – understand this better than anyone. In capitalist democracies, corporations spend billions on political donations and lobbying to influence economic policies in line with their own interests. The trillions spent by governments in propping up the banks following the 2008 financial crash – and the bailing out of the largest corporations through the Covid Corporate Financing Facility – speak volumes: the state and the economy are not separate entities. The goal of the state is clear: “Steady the ship and maintain course.” Corporations don't just pose a threat to our economic freedoms, but the future of the natural world. Just a handful of firms are responsible for over seventy per cent of carbon emissions, and despite public pressure, corporate action on the climate crisis has been largely ineffective. We shouldn't be surprised; after all, industry holds the power, and turkeys don't vote for Christmas. We discuss what “freedom” means, and how people can democratize institutions and take back control. Common sense tells us that free-market economies maximise freedom and that planned economies, typically found under socialist governments, curtail it. But what if this is completely the wrong way around? On this episode of Downstream, Aaron is joined by economist and author Grace Blakeley to discuss Henry Ford, Boeing and the nature of democracy. Grace Blakeley takes aim at capitalism in her latest book Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts and the Death of Freedom. In the book, Blakeley asserts that rather than failing, capitalism is working exactly as intended - allowing corporate and political elites to advance their own interests at the expense of the rest of us. Susie is joined by Grace to discuss how instead of feeling powerless, there is a new path we can take to democratise the economy for a better future for all.
Englishness has been hijacked by the right. The flag of St. George's Cross is proudly waved at far-right rallies. Conservative politicians insult the Left as being anti-English. And our history has been weaponised by cheerleaders for Brexit, exceptionalism and imperial nostalgia. That's the argument of Caroline Lucas, who came to the Intelligence Squared stage in April 2024 to offer us a radically new way of viewing England and Englishness. Lucas has long been at the forefront of progressive politics in the UK, having twice led the Green Party. Discussing her new book, Another England: How to Reclaim Our National Story with political commentator Grace Blakeley, Lucas explores how to redefine nationalism by centering the English people's history of radical inclusivity, deep-rooted commitment to the natural world and long struggle to win rights for all. These often overlooked stories place the Chartists, the Diggers and the Suffragettes alongside Nelson and Churchill, and draw on a rich literary history to explore our shared challenges of identity and equality today. This week's guest is one of those who understands the nuts and bolts - the iniquities - of the current system - and has ideas of how we can shape something better from the hot mess of corruption and greed in which we're mired. Grace Blakeley is a staff writer at Tribune Magazine and author of several books, including 'Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts and the Death of Freedom' in which she peels back the layers of our economic system, exposing the stark realities hidden beneath the veneer of 'free markets' and 'democratic' institutions.Grace's journey from the New Statesman to the frontlines of political commentary has equipped her with a unique vantage point to critique the fusion of state and corporate power, illuminating the dark corners of corporate greed and government complicity. With a narrative as gripping as a thriller, she exposes the corruption that led to tragedies like the Boeing 737 MAX crashes and the grim theatre of financial crises. In our conversation, Grace challenges the notion that some are born to rule while others to be ruled, advocating for a new democratic settlement that truly empowers people. She shares inspiring examples from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Cooperation Jackson, highlighting communities that are redefining resilience and self-governance. Her call to action is clear: it's time to question, to demand, and to actively participate in shaping a future that is just, equitable, and truly democratic. As we navigate the most critical moment in human history, Grace's insights are not a roadmap toward a world where the many, not the few, hold the power. For anyone feeling the weight of our current system's failures, this episode is a clarion call to join hands, make your voice heard, and be part of the collective effort to weave a future we can all be proud of.For those ready to dive into the mechanics of Grace's analysis and to explore the potential of a society reimagined, visit her website for links to her other books and to upcoming events. Grace's Bio: Grace Blakeley is a staff writer at Tribune magazine, author, and a prominent voice in economic and political commentary. Vulture Capitalism Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom By Grace Blakeley https://amzn.to/3TxZcV2 Longlisted for the 2024 Women's Prize for Nonfiction A Next Big Idea Book Club Must-Read for March 2024 In the vein of The Shock Doctrine and Evil Geniuses, this timely manifesto from an acclaimed journalist illustrates how corporate and political power brokers have used planned capitalism to advance their own interests at the expense of the rest of us—and how we can take back our economy for all. It's easy to look at the state of the world around us and feel hopeless. We live in an era marked by war, climate crisis, political polarization, and acute inequality—and yet many of us feel powerless to do anything about these profound issues. We've been assured that unfettered capitalism is necessary to ensure our freedom and prosperity, even as we see its corrosive effects proliferating daily. Why, in our age of unchecked corporate power, are most of us living paycheck to paycheck? When the economy falters, why do governments bail out corporations and shareholders but leave everyday people in the dust? Now, economic and political journalist and progressive star on the rise Grace Blakeley exposes the corrupt system that is failing all around us, pulling back the curtain on the free market mythology we have been sold, and showing how, as corporate interests have taken hold, governments have historically been shifting away from competition and democracy and towards monopoly and oligarchy. Tracing over a century of neoliberal planning and backdoor bailouts, Blakeley takes us on a deeply reported tour of the corporate crimes, political maneuvering, and economic manipulation that elites have used to enshrine a global system of “vulture capitalism”—planned capitalist economies that benefit corporations and the uber-wealthy at the expense of the rest of us—at every level, from states to empires. Blakeley exposes the cracks already emerging within capitalism, lighting a path forward for how we can democratize our economy, not just our politics, to ensure true freedom for all.About the author Grace Blakeley, one of the fiercest anti-capitalist advocates of her generation, is an author, journalist, and commentator. She graduated from the University of Oxford with a first-class honors degree in philosophy, economics, and politics. Her writing has appeared in Tribune and the New Statesman, and she regularly appears in the media - from BBC Question Time to MTV News. She is the author of Stolen, The Corona Crash, and Vulture Capitalism, and edited Futures of Socialism.
