Commercially sold tampons and feminine hygiene products are horrible for both your body and for the environment, leeching tons of harmful toxins and contributing greatly to plastic waste. This “small” issue affects half of the planet, and all of us indirectly, so it's about time we started to have an open conversation about topics that were stupidly previously taboo. My guest this week is Celia Pool, founder of multi-award winning sustainable period product company DAME. Celia tells us how DAME measures success against its sustainability efforts, standing out as a carbon-negative business in an industry that emits the same carbon as 3 million cars driving for a year. I ask Celia if she feels the pressure or desire to join feminist conversations as a brand and how DAME navigates the complexities and contradictions within. We talk about DAME’s infamous tampon string advert that adorned London buses last year and why it’s crucial to destigmatise periods for girls. And lastly, we talk about impact businesses as a whole, why it’s paramount to Celia to prove that DAME can be impact-driven and operate as a for-profit business, and how consumer demand really does need to ramp up to ensure deep-rooted and effective action against climate change. Should it be taboo to talk about a $6 billion industry that is responsible for greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to driving three million cars for a year? Of course not! But unfortunately, the artificial sensitivities around the topic of this month's episode - feminine hygiene products - have hindered widespread discussion of the significant environmental and social issues associated with these products. Join us as we investigate the many sustainability issues they affect, from environmental footprints and social acceptance to female genital health, access and equity, and many more. In addition to speaking with the co-founders of DAME, a startup disrupting the historically single-use tampon market, Jay and Scott are joined by two very special guests to help discuss this topic more organically - their girlfriends Anna and Shannon. Enjoy! ------ Sustainability Defined is the podcast that defines sustainability, one concept (and bad joke) at a time. Hosted by Jay Siegel and Scott Breen. Each episode focuses on a single topic that helps push sustainability forward. We explain each topic with the help of an experienced pro, place it within our organizational tree, and help our listeners define what exactly sustainability is, episode by episode. We have divided our organizational tree into the following seven sectors: Energy Cities Natural Environment Transportation Business Policy Social Each episode is categorized under one of our sectors and visually depicted within our organizational tree. The more episodes we complete, the more the tree will visually define what exactly sustainability means. www.sustainabilitydefined.com

We interview Celia Pool and Alec Mills, the co-founders of Dame, a sustainable tampon brand who are completely reshaping how we approach tampons. Billions of plastic tampon applicators get thrown away each year and cannot be recycled, an environmental issue that has largely been ignored - until now. Dame have created the first reusable tampon applicator, which is medical grade with self-sanitising technology, easy to use and 100% keepable, and also sell organic tampons. We interview the founders on how they built an eco brand, the key to a successful kickstarter campaign and how they landed Waitrose as a retail account. We also discuss our recent challenges around launching our BYBI CBD Booster. We’ve faced stumbling blocks with Facebook as well as other advertising platforms and payment gateway. Whilst 100% legal, the legislation around CBD is still unclear. We talk through the issues we’re facing! Finally, hiring is something that takes up a lot of our time as founders!
