Moving Toward Safer Pediatric Transport Care in EMS Insights from Dr. Nick Cochran-Caggiano's Research on Pediatric Transport and Resuscitation By Bram Duffee, PhD, EMT-P Transporting children in ambulances presents unique challenges that EMS providers face every day. Issues like the correct use of safety equipment, performance of life-saving procedures like CPR, and the absence of universal standards can make pediatric care in emergency settings more difficult than necessary. Dr. Nick Cochran-Caggiano, an emergency physician and researcher, has taken a deep look into these challenges through two pivotal studies that every EMS worker should know about. Both studies were discussed on the latest podcast episode of “EMS Research with Professor Bram.” The Unsafe Reality of Pediatric Transport in Ambulances One of Dr. Cochran-Caggiano's studies, published in Pediatric Emergency Care (2023), examined how children are secured during ambulance transport. The study reviewed over 3,000 cases by observing video footage of ambulances arriving at a pediatric emergency department. The findings reveal a troubling reality: Just 53.5% of children were transported using the correct safety device for their weight. A staggering 77.1% of transport restraints were not used properly, putting children at significant risk. Commercially made pediatric restraints were found to be the best option, yet these were still improperly used half the time. For many patients, ambulance cots were the default method of transport, but this was only the correct choice in 18.2% of cases. Dr. Cochran-Caggiano shared his thoughts on this alarming data during a recent interview, emphasizing that the absence of consistent safety standards puts children at unnecessary risk. "Having some sort of ability to transport children safely is a must," he said. He also pointed out the pitfalls of the current patchwork approach to pediatric safety in EMS. "There's no appropriate way to secure [a child's car seat] to an ambulance stretcher. You can make a good faith effort, but that's really all it is." Why This Matters Improper restraint practices don't just violate safety protocols—they create scenarios where otherwise preventable injuries become inevitable. Reflecting on the need for systemic change, Dr. Cochran-Caggiano pushed for a proactive approach, stating, "Let's make a difference before

The song received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who applauded its overall production and Cher's vocal performance, with some considering it to be a highlight of the album. It also reached the top 10 of the record charts in Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The accompanying music video for "If I Could Turn Back Time", directed by Marty Callner, was shot on board of the battleship USS Missouri and portrays Cher performing for the ship's crew, wearing a leather thong that revealed her tattooed buttocks and straddling a cannon. Military personnel condemned the video, while some family groups protested against its broadcast, because they deemed it offensive for the Navy and controversial. Following these protests, MTV was forced to air the video after the 9pm watershed."If I Could Turn Back Time" has been performed on seven of Cher's concert tours, most recently on the Here We Go Again Tour in 2018–2020, and at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Dell Technologies and Ericsson have announced a strategic partnership to combine their deep industry expertise with telecom software, solutions and support to guide communications service providers (CSPs) through their radio access network (RAN) cloud transformation journeys. CSPs are looking to network cloud and operations transformation to achieve improved economics and agility while maintaining network reliability. According to a new MeriTalk study released today, sponsored by Dell Technologies, nine in 10 CSPs say network transformation is critical to their organization's survival. However, 96 per cent of CSPs surveyed say their network transformation vision is lagging due to a variety of factors, including limited time and budget, as well as reliability and security concerns, ultimately holding them back from giving their customers a modern network. Dell and Ericsson's partnership aims to address these concerns by working alongside CSPs to develop simple and reliable Open RAN-based network cloud transformation strategies, using Dell and Ericsson integrated solutions and support. "Communications service providers have a crucial window of opportunity to lay the foundation for network cloud transformation and drive business growth," says Dennis Hoffman, senior vice president and general manager of Telecom Systems Business, Dell Technologies. "Our collaboration with Ericsson, combined with our decades of digital transformation expertise, will provide network operators the full plan and technologies they need to accelerate their network and operation transformations to positively impact the trajectory of their businesses." "Working closer with Dell Technologies will help further develop cloud-native programmable networks that bring new ideas and practices to the telecom market," says Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks at Ericsson. "Building upon years of collaboration, this strategic partnership will strengthen our cloudification efforts as we gear up to launch Open RAN-based commercial solutions. The cloud-native network will enable frequent updates and the rollout of new features using continuous deployment. It will ease the adoption of Cloud RAN technologies and prepare both companies' portfolios for new markets." Through the new agreement, Dell and Ericsson will: Collaborate to develop tailored network cloud transformation plans and advise CSPs on network architectures and operating models while also reducing the risks associated with deploying on open, multi-vendor environments. Dell and Ericsson plan to co-create solutions that drive energy efficiencies and innovate on Cloud RAN infrastructure operations. Commercially introduce Ericsson Cloud RAN software on Dell PowerEdge servers. The solution will offer continuous integration testing and lifecycle management to speed deployment and de-risk day-2 operations around updates and upgrades, with Dell as a solution partner. Co-develop services that simplify the entire deployment process from factory validation to installation and ongoing operational management, backed by Dell and Ericsson's joint support for any integrated solution. "To accelerate cloud-based open networks, the telecom industry needs vendors to come together to develop solutions that deliver more growth opportunities with minimal risk," says Chris Sambar, Head of Network, AT&T. "We look forward to the continued innovation and collaboration as we continue our Open RAN journey." In 2023, Ericsson and Dell Technologies began a collaboration to develop Cloud RAN solutions, leveraging Ericsson Cloud RAN software and RAN equipment paired with Dell Technologies infrastructure, with the common goal of broadening the ecosystem and bringing more flexibility to customers. Ericsson is participating in the Network X Americas event in Irving, Texas, with keynote speeches by Dr Sibel Tombaz, Head of Product Line Cloud and Purpose-built 5G RAN and Paul Challoner, CTO at Global Cu...

In 1945 confidence in British aviation was sky-high. Yet decades later, the industry had not lived up to its potential. What happened? The years that followed the war saw the Brabazon Committee issued flawed proposals for civil aviation planning. Enforced cancellations restricted the advancement of military aircraft, compounded later on by Defence Minister Duncan Sandys abandoning aircraft to fixate solely on missiles. Commercially, Britain's small and neglected domestic market hindered the development of civilian airliners. In the production of notorious aircraft, the inauspicious Comet came from de Havilland's attempts to gain an edge over its American competitors. The iconic Harrier jump jet and an indigenous crop of helicopters were squandered, while unrealistic performance requirements brought about the cancellation of TSR2. Peter Reese explores how repeated financial crises, a lack of rigour and fatal self-satisfaction led British aviation to miss vital opportunities across this turbulent period in Britain's skies. Peter Reese wrote this lecture for the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust in 2023. fWotD Episode 2532: Telopea speciosissima Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 10 April 2024 is Telopea speciosissima.Telopea speciosissima, commonly known as the New South Wales waratah or simply waratah, is a large shrub in the plant family Proteaceae. It is endemic to New South Wales in Australia and is the floral emblem of that state. No subspecies are recognised, but the closely related Telopea aspera was only recently classified as a separate species. T. speciosissima is a shrub to 3 or 4 m (9.8 or 13.1 ft) high and 2 m (6.6 ft) wide, with dark green leaves. Its several stems arise from a pronounced woody base known as a lignotuber. The species is well renowned for its striking large red springtime inflorescences (flowerheads), each including hundreds of individual flowers. These are visited by the eastern pygmy possum (Cercartetus nanus), birds such as honeyeaters (Meliphagidae), and various insects. The floral emblem for its home state of New South Wales, Telopea speciosissima has featured prominently in art, architecture, and advertising, particularly since Australian federation. Commercially grown in several countries as a cut flower, it is also cultivated in home gardens, requiring good drainage yet adequate moisture, but is vulnerable to various fungal diseases and pests. A number of cultivars with various shades of red, pink and even white flowers are available. Horticulturists have also developed hybrids with T. oreades and T. mongaensis which are more tolerant of cold, shade, and heavier soils. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Wednesday, 10 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Telopea speciosissima on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joey Standard.

Former corporate lobbyist/political adviser Jonathan Shepherd is tentatively "proud to be called a bit of a horticulturist".But horticulturist he very much is. The National Plant Collection holder is a veteran of Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in 2022 and 2023 where he won silver gilt for his Cosmos collection display (he also has a hollyhock national collection). In 2024, he makes his exhibiting debut at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.So with all the work of growing and nurturing some 3,000 Cosmos to select 100 in peak condition in May 2024, what's in it for him?"Commercially it's a ridiculous decision because doing flower shows, it costs a fair amount of money. He is conscious, if a tad sceptical about the need to address sustainability as a grower. He grows in peat-free compost, favours terracotta pots over plastic ones, but he tries not to "over-egg what I do".But in the run-up to Chelsea, his plant collections are recovering from a severe flooding event which will provide a dramatic narrative backdrop to his exhibit at Chelsea. He narrates the events of 20 October 2023 in the wake of storm Babette:"By 4.30 in the morning we heard the upstairs toilet start bubbling, which I think was a sign that all the drains had been overloaded. And we literally packed the car and kind of evacuated...filling the car with my precious seeds for the National Plant Collection.""I think that part of the flower show is actually focusing on flooding and resilience this year...well what better story to say that a grower that's been flooded out can come back, can come to Chelsea and show award-winning flowers?"The experience chimes with his interest in water conservation; his two plant collections survive solely on the 20,000 litres of the rainwater he stores over winter. It's a far cry from his former life when Jonathan was, he jokes, "one of those nasty lobbyists that people imagine" working for clients such as Royal Mail, Boots and the Woodland Trust - "essentially working in the political arena to either guard against threats that come from Government because all legislation has unintended consequences, or indeed spotting opportunities".He says he is actually proud of some of the work lobbyists do, "keeping Government in check and ensuring that perhaps some decisions that they take, that can be quite ludicrous and ridiculous because they haven't got all the information, perhaps get amended or changed or influenced".He contemplates what horticulture should be lobbying for: "If I was the industry, I'd be gearing up for the next election...what are you going to be wanting from whoever forms the next Government? What are your five asks?" He asks for "certainty" on peat and a more joined-up approach.Despite the recent attention lavished on the industry during the Lords Horticulture Enquiry and subsequent report, the work is not over, he says."There has to be a realisation...that once you've had a big piece of work, right, we're there, we're done...but politics doesn't work like that.."It's following through on that and ensuring that you don't let Government off the hook.As for the future, as his "hobby" takes an ever greater hold of him, Jonathan is contemplating possibilities, maybe even a third national plant collection. In this episode, Pete talks with Dixie Grace, a former planning engineer turned entrepreneur who has "brought back" the boiled peanut (a long time classic Southern snack) to the Northeast, an area where they're notoriously difficult to find . . . but not anymore! Raised by a single parent, she comes from a family of entrepreneurs, with her grandmother owning beauty salons and her mother being involved in various business ventures. Dixie shares her journey of creating artisanal boiled peanuts and the surprising customer reactions she encountered, leading to a remarkable 97% conversion rate. We explore her decision-making process in scaling her business and the innovative approach she's taking to bring her product to a wider market. Dixie's energy and enthusiasm are contagious! Pete offers up some advice to help her get her product into health clubs and commercializing it. Grace also talks about the myriad of health benefits, historical significance, and surprising international popularity of boiled peanuts. On 'going viral,' she states, "When I got such a reaction with people stopping their cars to come get boiled peanuts it was either, one they had a nostalgic attraction to it because they had them in Brazil or Thailand or down south . . . and it's beautiful to see because you see them remembering something that feels good to them, or you witness somebody discovering something brand new that tastes so good and then they buy it! I have a 97% conversion rate." Some key moments: Craveable boiled peanuts, a 400-year-old "secret." African slaves brought peanuts to America. Secretly developed and sourced premium ingredients creatively. High protein, fiber, and energy packed product. Commercially viable product, confirmed by higher authority. Seek advice, pivot, and stay on course. A few key takeaways: 1. Nostalgia and discovery play a significant role in consumer behavior, as demonstrated by Grace's high conversion rate of 97% when selling boiled peanuts. 2. Creating a unique and innovative product, such as Dixie Grace's artisanal boiled peanuts with a New York twist, can open up new markets and customer segments, even for traditional items. 3. Seeking out expert guidance and diverse perspectives is essential for scaling a business, as illustrated by Grace's decision to work with the Cornell Food Innovation Center and explore product development programs at Rutgers and Cornell. 4. Prioritizing quality and sustainability, such as offering eco-friendly packaging and targeting on-the-go consumers seeking protein, can differentiate a product in the market and attract health-conscious consumers. 5. Transitioning from a different career background to entrepreneurship requires confidence, adaptability, and a willingness to take calculated risks. Click here to download transcript. Drive with Dr. Peter Attia Key Takeaways Three mainsystems where magnesium matters the most: (1) bone health; (2) nerve transmission; (3) glucose control & insulin metabolism“The extent to which magnesium can help in a given area, whether it be bone health…or with respect to metabolism, is largely a function of magnesium deficiency. In other words, the more deficient you are in magnesium, the more you will be helped by supplementing magnesium.” – Dr. Peter AttiaWays to measure magnesium: Commercially available plasma tests from the lab (least recommended method)Urinary test collection – the less magnesium in the urine, the more likely you are to be deficient because it means the kidneys are holding on to magnesiumLoad the patient with magnesium and measure urinary excretion (likely done only in cases of suspected renal failure)Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgView the Show Notes Page for This Episode Become a Member to Receive Exclusive Content Sign Up to Receive Peter's Weekly Newsletter In this “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) episode, Peter tackles essential questions about magnesium, beginning with the important roles it plays in the body and why maintaining proper levels is crucial. The art world has long been a canvas for innovation and disruption, and with the advent of artificial intelligence, the medium is undergoing a transformation unlike any before. I sat down with Ahmed Elgammal, founder of Playform and creator of AICAN, to delve into the state of Generative AI in art-making. This topic straddles technology, creativity, and ethics. Playform's recent 500-participant survey provides a unique vantage point to analyze how AI is shaping artistic practice. AI is increasingly integrated into the artist's studio, from aiding in idea generation to refining final pieces. But as Ahmed and I discussed, this brings forth questions about the artist's identity and the art's originality. Does AI-enabled creation dilute or enhance human ingenuity? Ethically, the use of AI in art isn't without its complexities. Issues like copyright infringement loom large, especially as artists use AI tools trained on existing works. Ahmed highlights the importance of using one's own images for training the AI to avoid legal complications. And while the technology is dazzling, it's not without operational challenges, such as the difficulty in controlling outcomes and seamlessly incorporating these tools into traditional workflows. Commercially, AI's place in art is still a subject of debate and even skepticism among artists and critics alike. Can a machine-generated image hold the same artistic value as a human creation? Or is it simply a tool that assists in the creative process? Ahmed and I touched on these differing viewpoints, highlighting that the role of AI in art might best be described as that of an enabler rather than a creator. The conversation also ventured into the synergy of AI with other emerging technologies in the art world, stressing that the focus should not be on AI creating art, but rather on how it can enhance human artistic expression and experimentation. In essence, our talk illuminated the expansive yet intricate role that AI is beginning to play in the world of art. It's a narrative of collaboration and tension, innovation and apprehension, but above all, it's a story still being written. We encourage you to explore Playform's website to see for yourself how AI can be a game-changer in the creative process.
