And (after an eternity)…we're back! Join us today as we take a closer look at the fascinating (and perhaps a bit messy) history of period garments. Not breeches and corsets à la Bridgerton period dress, but the development of things like menstrual belts, vaginal packs, early tampons, and the rise of reusable options like the mooncup and period pants/panties. We'll explore where these products came front, the cultural forces and taboos that shaped them, and how they've evolved in relation to changing societal attitudes toward menstruation. It's sure to be a bloody brilliant ride!If you have any requests, questions, or simply feel like saying hello (we're friendly and Mr. B, our Executive Paw-ducer, is a purr-fect angel), drop us a line at historyunhemmedpodcast@gmail.com.You can also find us on social media:Instagram: @history_unhemmedFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/people/History-Unhemmed/100084597553601/We are also on Patreon at: Patreon.com/historyunhemmedTHANK YOU!RESOURCES:Alliance for Period Supplies. Menstrual products are coming to some Pennsylvania schools thanks to Governor Shapiro's million-dollar program. Dr. Khalid Mumin Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education says it's important to create conditions where students can learn without having barriers to the basic needs that may be acquired.  “First and foremost, the governor and the first lady advocated for this funding because they believe that all Pennsylvanians, especially our kids, deserve real opportunity and freedoms to be able to chart their course for success, “said Dr. Khalid Mumin. Pennsylvania Department of Health, Dr. Debra Bogen, says this is a win-win across the commonwealth, and she's glad to see this program move forward. “There's no bell that goes off that says I'm going to have my period today. So, it's really important that we have the flexibility in schools to respond to the needs of children when they when they need them. So, this is such a smart and easy, important, not easy, but it's an important program, right? We provide all kinds of things for our children to ensure they're ready for their school day. And this is just another important need that is met for children where, you know, you can't always have everything you need, always at your fingertips. And so, this is making sure the schools have those needs met, “said Dr. Bogen. Montgomery County Commissioner Jamila Winder says period poverty affects so many people. Now there are period products located in all county buildings within Montgomery County. “Like as I mentioned earlier, they're we believe, based on the 2022 census data, that there are over 13,000 females that are living below the poverty line and age 12 to 44 of menstruating age. And so, you know, the poverty challenges aren't just affecting our children. Right. And so, this is you know, people come to our county built buildings to do a lot of business, you know, vie for a marriage license. You might have to go to court for something, taking a walk in one of our parks or playing at one of the playgrounds. So it just really but the continuity of addressing period products, this is a great example from, you know, your schools to where people are doing business, you know, for every day, everyday life, “said Winder.          Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode of Sustainably LB is a solo episode and I will be discussing my latest article for Remake – Are Companies Greenwashing Us Into Buying Toxic Products?Over the past few years there has been an increase in consumers asking: “What is in the products I am purchasing and using? What do these vague labels actually mean? And are these marketing claims actually legitimate?” The rise in this consumer concern? The access to improved chemical testing and the increase in the finding of PFAS or ‘forever chemicals' in many of our everyday-use products such as baby products, food containers, furniture and even our undergarments, specifically period products. No matter which products are used (tampons, pads, cups or underwear) all period products are used near or in highly absorptive and sensitive parts of our bodies. Recently a report surfaced that accused the underwear brand Thinx of having PFAS in the lining of its sustainable and organic period products. Read, right next to that delicate area. However, while the idea of forever chemicals and plastics making their way into our intimates is disturbing, this lawsuit against Thinx isn't about the potential harm of the products, but rather, it's focused on Thinx's misleading advertising.Show Notes:Greenwashing is misleading advertising that claims products are sustainable and safe when they are unfoundedBe leary of certifications and paid independent testing claimsEPA has identified over 12,000 types of PFAS It's mostly men who profit off of lax chemical safety standards, and it's women who sufferThere is a long history of chemicals being used in menstruation productsThere is little Federal regulation around products containing PFAS and toxic chemicals, especially when it comes to menstrual productsHandles:Instagram: Sustainably_LBLinks:Remake Article  – Are Companies Greenwashing Us Into Buying Toxic Products?New York State Menstrual Product Labeling LawCalifornia Law Regulating PFAS in Consumer ProductsEPA – PFAS ExplainedThinx LawsuitTo Dye For: How Toxic Fashion Is Making Us Sick – and How We Can Fight BackMusic:Ian AeilloCreative:Lauren BatesLogo:Meadow Hearn

As thoughtful consumers, we try to make the best decisions for ourselves and our families. And the bottom line is that we shouldn't have to twice about the possibility that the everyday products we use, from the cookware in our homes to our cosmetics, could pose any level of danger to our health and wellbeing. We should be able to have confidence in the brands that make these products, as well as in the role of the powers that be — specifically the FDA — in ensuring their safety. However, there are unfortunate realities behind many of these everyday goods; PFAS, better known as "forever chemicals,” being one of them. In today's episode of On Health, I address the threat of PFAS to our wellbeing as women, and to our children as I talk about the recent controversy that was brought to light from behind the shadows of some very misleading marketing by Thinx, a popular period underwear company. I dive into the long-term impact these chemicals can have on our health, the toxicity of labels like "organic" and "natural" in products that clearly contain PFAS, what products to be aware of, how to limit your exposure, and the importance of advocating for real, systemic change to keep ourselves, our families, and future generations as safe and healthy as possible. Join me as I discuss: The definition and history of PFAS and why they are classified as "forever chemicals" Where menstrual products fall under the FDA's regulatory category and what this ultimately means for their safety How much PFAS exposure we are getting from menstrual products and the health risks associated with this Tips and best practices to reduce exposure to PFAS when it comes to both menstrual products and everyday living Why the issue of these chemicals present in our products requires systemic change and what needs to be done moving forward Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in to your body, yourself, and this podcast!
